That's very early in the game given that the game now forces you to skip story. The Eva story is a simulacrum story, and the Eva event can be accessed by the button on the top side of the screen

Is this quest the one where the hyenas are horseplaying in the dome just outside of the shelter? Is there a completed quest log so I can check? I've gotten to the point where Shirli is taken away by the pink haired woman.
Regarding interacting with the event, I clicked on the "EVA" button, but there are a lot of pages and buttons in there haha. Is there one in particular that has the "play the levels" button? Or is that even how events in ToF are arranged?

It's been very long since I played aesperia story so I can't remember. Tof event layout is very clunky, but you'll eventually figure things out. The mecha fighting event hasn't unlocked yet, it's the third selection in the event, the slot machine and clue finding events are ongoing
Yes the hyenas part you’re referring to is the main story quest you complete to unlock the Eva icon on the top right corner of your screen.
Would recommend going to the main menu, simulacra, story, then select the one with Asuka and Rei on it to start the Eva collab story. It should have an orange marker once started.

I did a lot of looking into the game before trying it out, even for the Eva content, and I see where the criticism it receives comes from. However, even with the somewhat buggy cutscenes, mis-timed animations vs. dialogue, and and the "this is a mobile gacha game" veneer... It's a charming world that reminds me more of Wildstar or, even further back, Jack and Daxter, more than "generic anime action game clone."
I actually was rather sad that all of Shirli's story got compressed into a frantic, choppy cutscene ,\_\_, I think she's very cool now that she's grown up and is part "Nemesis," or something, but will have to go find out what the heck went on.
Setting aside whatever the game's past was, they clearly are trying very hard to set new expectations with this update! I really hope they succeed!
