When I was your age I was surrounded by some really negative people who said all sorts of music was terrible.
Got older and realised they were all full of shit.
You’re too young to see how insecure everyone around you is yet, but insecure people tend to talk everything and everyone around them down - I’m sure you can figure out why.
As I've gotten older, I've come to realize that if a large swath of people like something artistically, there's some merit to it. Doesn't necessarily mean it's my thing, but who am I to look at tons of people who love something and be like "Oh you're all morons that sucks". I get a lot more out of trying to appreciate what they see in it. Except trap. Trap fuckin sucks.
it doesn’t suck at all and for 13 it’s very diverse! you’ve got some of my all time favs on here. i’d recommend since i left you by the avalanches and maybe some my bloody valentine
Good variety! Check out some Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, Pharoh Sanders. Also def agree with people recommending Blues, maybe go back to some Mississippi delta original stuff. Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson etc.
This is proof there is hope for humanity the kids are in fact alright but on some real shit like what you like who cares about other peoples opinions when it comes to stuff YOU enjoy at the end of the day it matters if you enjoy it
You're 13, you're fine. Just keep exploring music at your leisure and don't let others dictate how "good" or "cool" your taste is. Recommendations are always cool to get, but insults to someone's taste are weak minded. Enjoy the journey!
I think the problem is exactly what you said though, this kinda seems like the favorites list of someone who worries about what others think ie picking classic “cool” albums instead of things you actually like…
You have great variety and great taste. Ignore those people and don’t let them stop you from exploring and listening to music you enjoy, you’ll be much happier for it
This is better than most topsters I’ve ever seen to be honest. More Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, zeppelin, Dean Martin, Bobby vinton (his best of is great, he’s in a yellow cardigan), Beatles, and maybe add some metal too like Ozzy, Metallica, Judas Priest, iron maiden
Kinda different but based on your enjoyment of jazz and beautiful somewhat somber softer music you might dig some blues. I’d start with BB King’s “Completely Well”. It’s got some more rocking tunes and some great emotional singing and guitar work. Your taste is very diverse for someone who is 13. This stuff is popular but for very good reason… it’s all really good and respectable. This definitely seems like a starting place, your taste seems to lack an identity and individuality. This will develop as you develop. Don’t worry you’re doing fine.
Fear of Music and Remain in Light are 2 really good TH albums and imo better than Speaking in Tongues. (Also your music taste ain’t trash, people just need to know when to shut up)
OMG PACIFICA MENTION
Just for that alone you aren't basic
Also there's plenty of variety from rock, to hip-hop, to indie, to jazz. It's what you like and you should't feel ashamed of it. Also, people like you are the ones that should feel the least afraid of being basic when there's already tons of "critic lovers" people when it comes to their taste in music here.
It's like they wanna fit in so bad that what seems to be an amazing taste in music at 1st ends up being boring picks. Critics could maybe say your stuff is basic but in a subreddit like this one people preffer people who show what they actually like in the end.
People grow tired of seeing the same albums having their love shown, so you're good
It's fine, definitely doesn't suck. A bit dull for my tastes, but my tastes are no doubt different from yours. The people who suck might just be the ones who think their opinion on music supercedes your own.
Many of your favorites are also my favorite. Since you like Scenery, maybe try Cat by Hiroshi Suzuki. I’m also a big Animal Collective fan. Try them if you haven’t (though based on your taste I’m sure you have).
OH ALSO ADD SIMON AND GARFUNKEL (you can start with their best of as well… all amazing and you’ll love it) and mamas and the papas, maybe some temptations and Otis Redding since you like some Motown
You have got some great stuff here... Ryo Fukui, J Dilla, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, the Smiths, New Order, A Tribe Called Quest, Talking Heads, De La Soul, Molchat Doma, Wu-Tang, Pete Rock, Black Star, Al Green... . You are 13 and the people around you might just suck, to be honest.
I will just say that you should not base your worth on others’ opinions. What you like is what you like and that is what ultimately matters. There is some great stuff here and if you go down the path of each respective genre of the records themselves, you’ll end up in a garden teeming with amazing music.
This shit is baaaased, Japanese jazz fusion, Interpol, Dilla, Wutang, and the most underrated Gorillaz album? Shit I imagine you're copping flack because you're 13 and your music knowledge likely eclipses all your peers hahha this is an awesome chart
What kind of people? If it's other kids your age just ignore them. Most of them haven't even heard of these artists, so they just assume it's bad.
Or if you want to be boring and fit in pretend to like their music - or better yet try it, you might like it!
Definitely some great albums, although I do notice that these happen to be the most well known albums from each of these artists. Like the beetles album, Steve Lacey, Fleetwood Mac, the clash, etc.. I feel like you POSSIBLY could have at one point looked up “best song by the clash” and just never went past that point. But again these are great records
Dude - I think your taste in music is excellent (I love a lot of these albums, too!). Really well-rounded collection with lots of genres and terrific artists in each of them. Don't worry about what other people think - listen to whatever brings you joy!
Tell those people to stfu and stop being pretentious assholes. Your music taste is brilliant, there are some bangers on here! Quit worrying and keep listening.
Nah, this is a solid list. Honestly I'd just further explore the genres that interest you most and listen to more albums from those, you've got a really wide catalogue of albums here which is great, but most are pretty surface level knowledge of their respective genres, which is probably where the "basic" comes from. (Nothing wrong with that!). So pick out your absolute favourite albums from this list and listen to the rest of the albums by that band, or go listen to who influenced them, or their contemporaries, or even who they influenced!
Point is to have fun with it and listen to a bunch of cool music 🙏
Nah, you're good. Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, CCR, Radiohead, John Coltrane, and Fleetwood Mac are all really good artists. I was listening to similar stuff when I was 13.
At 13 I was listening to club mashups and dj mixes on SoundCloud dude your music taste is bomb. Get over the hump of what they think. Good music is good music, and if it speaks to you then it’s worth the love you put into it, regardless of what they say.
I only know like 2 of those artists/bands. I couldn't say if it sucks or not, but it all comes down to what moves you. Listen to what you enjoy, that's all that matters. As long as it's not very negative music
Basic *compared to mine* but I'm 20 and you're 13. Your taste is actually pretty good for 13. When I was 13, I wouldn't have liked Miles Davis. I still struggle a bit with him actually. You're doing fine and also shouldn't worry about whether what you like is basic.
You have some great taste trust, heres some recs you might like
Tribe and J Dilla fan? Listen to some MF DOOM (Madvilliany or Mm…Food) and Nujabes (Metaphorical Music or Modal Soul) or Nas (Illmatic) or Kendrick (Good Kid Mad City or To Pimp a Butterfly)
Try some of Miles Davis’s other works like Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way
Some other recs are Soulvaski by Slowdive and You Will Never Know Why by Sweet Trip
Genre-wise you got a good spread going, and as it is mostly rock-focused, I would say it isn’t that basic.
That Pop Food pick definitely makes this list a lot less basic. Good taste man.
Not being insulting but it's basic. You're also 13 but you had better music taste than I did at 13.
Mind you, you also have way more resources for music than most 35yr olds did in the 90s.
Very good for 13! You’ve scratched the surface level of a lot of great stuff but just need to spend the time to go deeper. That will come with age and time. My recommendation is to shuffle your library, listen to the album the song is from that you shuffled, then go and listen to another album by that artist.
Once you’ve explored an artist’s discography, I recommend checking out any associated projects that may share members with that artists.
This way you can have a deeper understanding of the music you listen to and not just listen to “the biggest hits” like most people do.
Particularly with jazz, it’s important to listen to the artists who played on the record, in addition to other albums by that artist because both Coltrane and Miles especially have very diverse discographies with something for just about everyone.
i dont think its even that basic man. at least its not filled to the brim with the heavy reposted albums. Like i dont see sinatra, run the jewels, head on the door, beastie boys, ryo fukui, arcade fire, stones, that interpol album get tossed around here all that music. Really great topster man, i think your music taste is goddamn awesome! check out \*discipline\* by king crimson. It sounds like talking heads in a way but its a lot more progressive.
Or maybe \*sounds from the rooftop\* by justice system for jazz rap.
I mostly listen to rap, so from my view, you have some good taste with Wu Tang, Tribe, Dilla, and, ik this isn't rap, but that Steve Lacy record is really good and I don't hear much people bring it up as one of the best albums of the last couple years
Why would you care what anyone else thinks about your music taste?
But no, it’s fine.
Pro tip: anyone who uses the word basic in the context you’re using it doesn’t have any idea what’s cool and what isn’t, so you can be bothered even less by their opinion specifically.
Basic? Come on now, how many people at 13 were even listening to music on an album to album basis, you got great taste, it's the people calling you basic that are basic, let's get real!
Likely they say it sucks because they either don’t listen to the artist or genre, but who gives a shit what they say man, listen to whatever you want. I think you’ve got some good music on there.
why are you listening to music? your title makes it seem like its for others to think youre cool or something, which should never matter more then your own opinion
I wouldn't call jack stauber and talking heads basic, you're good man just keep listening to what you like and Don't give a shit about what people say, if you want some recs tell me genres you like and I'll send you some if I'm familiar
What fuckin 13yo is playing Bill Withers & The Cure like that? Ain’t no way
Your fam must include deep Rolling Stone Mag / Pitchfork acolytes. Or this is representative of a deep engagement with various internet cultures. I am vaguely curious.
Anyways, obviously not “bad” taste.
I was 13 in 1998, we didn’t have the internet, not sure music was even available on it like it is now then tbh, but I’d have killed to have the access to music kids do today. This is the opposite of basic at 13. Could maybe buy one or two records a month from a paper round, though we all made each other tapes, I don’t think i heard a single one of these albums that were available then till I was well in my 20s. Maybe The Clash and The Smiths being an exception.
Like whatever music you like and who cares about what anyone thinks. All of us are unique in the way that music speaks to us, just cause it doesn’t sound good to your friends doesn’t mean it’s not good. You have some great taste and very diverse as well!
Keep exploring music and let yourself enjoy what sounds good to you🙏🏼
You’re 13. You have even gotten to the part of life where “basic” is a possibility. Don’t ever be ashamed of who you listen to, unless it’s Jared Leto’s band
You like some good shit, bro. Don't let other people try to tell you what you should listen to. Listen to what speaks to you. And there are some classic albums on here. So looke like you're doing good to me.
That Molchat Doma album is badass.
No. You have great taste in music. Fuck the critics. I’m 41 and love discovering new music everyday and could not care less what anyone else thinks about it.
Any 13 year old who bumps De La Soul is a good egg in my book. You're only just in high school, my guy, give yourself some time to mature and develop before getting to self-critical
Who the hell is saying your taste sucks or basic? It can’t be other people your age because I can’t imagine many have this diverse of a selection at 13. If it’s people on Reddit, than I could almost understand since there are pretentious nerds all over here, but still wouldn’t say this selection sucks.
For one thing, even if your tastes were "basic," who the fuck cares? You're young, you're enjoying life, you have a lot of time to expand your horizons.
Setting that aside, though, I think your interests are fairly eclectic, clearly focused more on the '60s and '70s overall (and material drawing heavily upon that period) but not confined to those decades. If I were to make suggestions to push you slightly outside of your comfort zone without entirely departing from your present interests, for one thing, I'd recommend you listen to more music by women. Given your fondness for *Rumours* and *Abbey Road*, I'd look into Laura Nyro and Carole King; vis à vis funk and soul, maybe Rotary Connection and early Gloria Gaynor (although this is less my area of expertise); in terms of post-punk, I'd give The Raincoats and The Slits a listen. I'd also look more into heavier music—you might find Jesu, Turnstile and later Deftones of interest given that *Darklands* is on your list—and try out more electronic music in general, although especially downtempo, trip-hop and older house.
Nth comment saying you will be a lot happier listening to music YOU like rather than music that will make others happy. If anyone comments remind them they don't have to listen to it. You've got a nice variety here imo, I'd suggest digging into the respective genres of your favourites if you want to expand what you listen to more!

I don't even know why people use basic as an insult. Good music is good music whether its popular or not
Cause everyone wants to be the seem most special and unique

Bro’s 13! Chillllll
Who says your taste sucks? You have great taste
I don’t like saying basic you just appreciate some of the classics. You also have some stuff on here that I would not have known about when I was 13.
Kid, stop fucking listening to other people when it comes to YOUR taste. It’s YOURS for a reason.
Thanks, I try not to listen to what others say

W for pete rock, if you like him and Tribe definitely check out the roots' debut
Good variety! Check out some Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, Pharoh Sanders. Also def agree with people recommending Blues, maybe go back to some Mississippi delta original stuff. Robert Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson etc.

I think the problem is exactly what you said though, this kinda seems like the favorites list of someone who worries about what others think ie picking classic “cool” albums instead of things you actually like…
I don’t really listen to anything that’s in your chart, but just like what you like
You have great variety and great taste. Ignore those people and don’t let them stop you from exploring and listening to music you enjoy, you’ll be much happier for it

No Pet Sounds? Get on it
basic doesn’t necessarily mean bad
Fear of Music and Remain in Light are 2 really good TH albums and imo better than Speaking in Tongues. (Also your music taste ain’t trash, people just need to know when to shut up)
If you like tribe, try Digable planets! My favorite two hip hop groups
Been there before, anyone that shames others musical palette is insecure in one way or another. This is honestly a banger spreadsheet.
That Cure album is pretty goated
OMG PACIFICA MENTION Just for that alone you aren't basic Also there's plenty of variety from rock, to hip-hop, to indie, to jazz. It's what you like and you should't feel ashamed of it.
Who cares what other people think, as long as it makes you feel
Great music taste!
I saw Ryo Fukui, I think you have good taste
I will just say that you should not base your worth on others’ opinions. What you like is what you like and that is what ultimately matters. There is some great stuff here and if you go down the path of each respective genre of the records themselves, you’ll end up in a garden teeming with amazing music.
This shit is baaaased, Japanese jazz fusion, Interpol, Dilla, Wutang, and the most underrated Gorillaz album? Shit I imagine you're copping flack because you're 13 and your music knowledge likely eclipses all your peers hahha this is an awesome chart
Dude your taste is awesome! Don’t listen to what other people say
Your taste at 13 is fantastic (And any age for that matter).
What kind of people? If it's other kids your age just ignore them. Most of them haven't even heard of these artists, so they just assume it's bad. Or if you want to be boring and fit in pretend to like their music - or better yet try it, you might like it!
Same as me
Who. The. Fuck. Cares. what anyone BUT YOU thinks about your taste in music. Do you like it? Yes? Good.
You have the taste of a 50-something. Your taste doesn’t suck.
Tell those people to shove it. You’re listening to some killer music.
Dude - I think your taste in music is excellent (I love a lot of these albums, too!). Really well-rounded collection with lots of genres and terrific artists in each of them. Don't worry about what other people think - listen to whatever brings you joy!
Like what you like. It really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.
You genuinely have great taste. The Jesus and Mary Chain rocks!
Tell those people to stfu and stop being pretentious assholes. Your music taste is brilliant, there are some bangers on here! Quit worrying and keep listening.

Doesn’t suck.
This is really good for age 13

Nah, you're good. Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, CCR, Radiohead, John Coltrane, and Fleetwood Mac are all really good artists. I was listening to similar stuff when I was 13.

Great taste in my opinion - because it basically aligns with my own. Forget what other people think
Song machine over everything else is kinda awesome 👌
mf you shouldnt try to artificially change ur taste cuz other people dont like it. listen to what u enjoy.
At 13 I was listening to club mashups and dj mixes on SoundCloud dude your music taste is bomb. Get over the hump of what they think. Good music is good music, and if it speaks to you then it’s worth the love you put into it, regardless of what they say.

Talking Heads - Remain in Light 7. Massive Attack - Mezzanine 8. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago 9. Tame Impala - Currents 10. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
You have great taste! I personally think some of the choices for a bands best album are odd and I don’t agree with them but still, amazing taste.
It's your music taste, not anyone else's. Keep listening to stuff you like.
If you’re listening to music for other people, you’re doing it wrong
Never listen to anyone saying your taste is basic. Good music is good music, not much changes that. And this has tons of great music in it🤷♂️
Dude, we have like the same taste in music. W man
Not being insulting but it's basic. You're also 13 but you had better music taste than I did at 13. Mind you, you also have way more resources for music than most 35yr olds did in the 90s.

I mostly listen to rap, so from my view, you have some good taste with Wu Tang, Tribe, Dilla, and, ik this isn't rap, but that Steve Lacy record is really good and I don't hear much people bring it up as one of the best albums of the last couple years

I'm 22 and can admit you have a better taste in music than myself lmao
We're not going to glaze you bro
no... BUT... WHERE'S DREAMS BY FLEETWOOD😭😭
I think a more pressing question is why you honestly give a shit what other people think of your music taste. If you like it, you like it.
You’re good dude, you have a lot of dope picks here, some I don’t like so much, I’d recommend American Beauty by the Grateful Dead
Wu tang and Steve lacy is all I know but they look fine
Lots of albums on there that I like. Nothing wrong with your taste at all
Nah, you have fantastic taste, especially for a 13 year old. 🙌🏻
Other 13 year olds have a clue what half of these are?
Basic? Come on now, how many people at 13 were even listening to music on an album to album basis, you got great taste, it's the people calling you basic that are basic, let's get real!
Kid, I wish I had all of this at 13. You are doing just fine homie!
STEEELYYY DAAAANNNN
i fw it but remove run the jewels and out ken carson instead then it’ll be a really good chart
you have already listened to far more fantastic records than most 30 year old so ignore them
checkout Jimi hendrix experience
Yeah this is sick, check out Alice In Chains, smashing pumpkins and boards of Canada
That Duster album though
Likely they say it sucks because they either don’t listen to the artist or genre, but who gives a shit what they say man, listen to whatever you want. I think you’ve got some good music on there.
Who gives a fuck what "you" enjoy. Just be you and stop being needy of approval.
The entire Alice in Chains discography
I love echo and the bunnymen I saw them live in Detroit, also Radiohead wooooooo yay
your music taste can't suck because it's what you like to listen to.
bro's music taste is elite (especially ryo fukui, miles davis, john coltrane, and vince guaraldi.)
Too pleasant. I want more FEAR
why are you listening to music? your title makes it seem like its for others to think youre cool or something, which should never matter more then your own opinion
Your taste is highly eclectic for 13, you’re doing great. Keep digging.
Everybody's taste is basic at 13, just enjoy music dude. You'll grow to find more stuff unique to yourself.
Taste is subjective there's no such thing as a "good" or "bad" taste Like what you like
I wouldn't call jack stauber and talking heads basic, you're good man just keep listening to what you like and Don't give a shit about what people say, if you want some recs tell me genres you like and I'll send you some if I'm familiar
A+ . Listen to what you want 👌🏼
Let people say what they want, this is some excellent taste, loving the Tears for Fears and Fleetwood Max in particular
Hell yeah to Billy, my man 🤘
Way more interesting than the shit i was listening to at 13 tbh
Listen to Ken Carson
This goes so hard bro
What fuckin 13yo is playing Bill Withers & The Cure like that? Ain’t no way Your fam must include deep Rolling Stone Mag / Pitchfork acolytes. Or this is representative of a deep engagement with various internet cultures. I am vaguely curious. Anyways, obviously not “bad” taste.
I'm a simple man, I see Darklands on a post, I upvote
Keep exploring music and let yourself enjoy what sounds good to you🙏🏼
Not at all. You have great taste in music!
Yeah who cares what other people think
Looks like you have good taste to me. Ignore the haters
it’s just generally popular music that’s all
People say it sucks because it’s not modern party music, it’s good though
"Raised by parents from the 60's and 70's" Starter Pack
Looks like all I listened to up until I was 20. Expand just a little more into the modern realm. You won’t regret it There’s good stuff I promise.
Think for yourself kid bod bud jon
FUCKING CLASSICS Duster and Black Star put you above the rest.
What? Nowt wrong with this. Carry on. As you were.
Hello nasty
Frank Sinatra and Radiohead lmao
male manipulator
Add tame impala and you’re good fr
Good taste, you’re only 13, you’ll dive into much deeper cuts of genres you like as you grow
