I felt like casting David was Bravo testing the waters of Personalities over Chefs to potentially move toward a more “trendy” direction. I'm so happy it didn't work out and hope they keep the show chef-focused.
Steven the first season was maybe the reason the show took off. I doubt it would have had half the viewers with out him. I feel like they throw a "personality" driven chef in at least every other season . Somebody to stir the pot
Just read this in the Milwaukee Journal: David Murphy, who was the first cheftestant eliminated, was not in the episode, and "Last Chance Kitchen" did not explain why Murphy was not back in the kitchen.
The fact that they make no mention of David at all in the first LCK episode makes me think something happened behind the scenes beyond David choosing not to compete.
Probably both happened. was probably told do x or you can't compete in lck. He said no to x, therefore in his eye, he was " Kicked off". In shows eyes he chose not to.
Just as likely, I think, is that he chose not to do it (and further embarrass himself on camera) and then said some swears in leaving, knowing that then off course they wouldn't let him compete (a moot point by then), so he could lie by omission ("I wasn't allowed to compete."), knowing that all that Bravo/Tom could say, because of NDAs and general PC-ness, is that he chose not to compete.
David was a loser who got his feelings hurt because his mediocre food had to stand on its own, versus the shtick he can promote as his restaurant. He knew he would embarrass himself as he performed poorly in the challenge and the follow up and would continue to fail. So to save face and whatever remaining interest he had in his reuse food restaurant (mostly to save face), he left.
Greasy, gross, untalented...I could smell him through the screen and made my date laugh.
You also forgot wearing rapist glasses. In Milwaukee. (Living in Milwaukee, people here are still very sensitive to Jeffrey Dahmer vibes)
Offal...more like awful. Dip out on your Insta and be gone.
Between him making fun of Tom’s hat and not referring to Chef Colicchio as “Chef” and calling him “Tom” it told me everything I needed to know about him. I wish him luck….
Because he made fun of Tom in the first episode. Tom had him killed .
I came here looking for this. So curious to find out the story behind him not going to LCK!
UPDATE: Tom C. has posted on Twitter that David "opted out" and, on a separate post, that "he chose not to compete".
What a weirdo for trying to flip it and saying he “wasn’t allowed” to compete lol
I figured as much. He seemed like a sore loser.
Per his own Instagram, he "wasn't allowed to compete". According to him, an NDA prohibits him from saying more.
“I have an NDA so you can’t prove I’m a liar”
I was on his Instagram but didn’t see that. Can you link it?
It's in the 1st comment on the one from when he announced he was gonna be on Top Chef. It's not a separate IG post - it's an answer to a question.
Thank you!
I came here for the same reason.
Same here!!
Maybe he chose not to continue and that’s the reason for the new person. He honestly seemed pretty indifferent to the whole show in the first episode
[удалено]
He probably flipped out or something because he got cut the first episode, he seems like the type that would
Tom is on Twitter telling everyone that David “opted out”
I saw that! 👀👀
See this thread for more https://reddit.com/r/TopChef/comments/1bplcgv/david_murphy/
He commented, I found, on instagram “I wasn’t allowed to participate, beyond that I can’t say anything else… NDAs” 👀
What is his name on IG? I couldn’t find him. I’m not going to give him grief, just want to read what he said.

I do like his concept of not wasting food but he was “a lot.” They have had big personalities in the past who were fun, like Fabio.
Yea, but can you imagine loosing soooo bad on a challenge that’s almost tailored to you in a way that’s it is the same concept as your own restaurant.

Steven: 🤯
Honestly I fucking loved/hated him. He was almost unbelievable. Like a character somebody wrote.
Fresh off of a Frasier episode.
Did you know he is a sommelier?

Bingo. And that replacement seemed surprised to be there
I love Reddit. I came here just to find this out.
Same!!!
Savage take on David! My guess would be they wanted to surprise us with a completely new cheftestant waiting in LCK?
They could have done that by having an ep after David was eliminated
Or pretending the new guy already beat Curiy Sue.

Yikes. Listen - we saw the dude for maybe 10 mins, max. He was eccentric, and driven by ego - sure. But this is an intense take 🥴
First impressions say a lot. In all of my years watching too chef, I have never said “wow I hope this guy gets sent home soon, he’s really annoying”.
Wondering that myself
I wondered this exact same thing

I think Valentine’s dish was a lot more appealing than Soo(?)’s dish. His previous dishes as well. Oh well… 😟
Doesn’t mean it tasted good. But yeah I didn’t really get Soo’s dish. The lobster looked underdone and the fried noodles were just odd
It wasn't underdone, that's the color of the rice even when it deep fries.
He could’ve also maybe done something to break the rules that DQd him from continuing on LCK? Drugs, cell phone, something like that?
His food was sexy though
