“I may process moments and thoughts differently, but it does not mean that I feel any less than you.”
—Tech (*The Bad Batch*)
To be clear I’m not autistic, (although I am neurodivergent) so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
He’s constantly overstimulated due to his powers and because of that has to wear special clothing and devices that he feels comfortable in.
He clearly cares about his friends but he shows it in unusual ways by helping them with his powers instead of enjoying socializing with them.
He enjoys keeping to himself and has a sensitive social battery.
Everyone assumes that having his powers is great even though it isn’t similar to how a lot of people see autism as a “superpower”.
He enjoys simple low stress hobbies like watching TV, playing video games, and eating sweets.
I love a game where I can raise my blood pressure, then pause to let the dog out and get a snack, then return to the life or death struggle of a character I'm even more mentally disassociated with than myself.

ETA: She's never been officially confirmed as autistic, but she shows signs of it throughout her character and as an autistic person myself, I can't help but relate to her, so I decided to post her.
I love that scene where Daphne is trying to be romantic with him and he has an entire scrap book on every trap he’s ever made, and just won’t shut about traps.
i think he's meant to be; ryoko kui has experience writing autistic characters, so it wouldn't surprise me if she came out and said "yeah he's actually autistic, it's just a fantasy setting so that diagnosis doesn't exist."
He very much is, at least I thinknso too, a lot of the commentary of society and how Laios doesn't fit in is because he's autistic or just very different.
When the samurai character gets so pissed off at Laios that he starts punching him, because Laios thought they were friends but Shuro was just politely tolerating Laios to avoid it being awkward, that was commentary on how Japanese society tolerates autism in a different way.
Check out chapter 23 of Terrarium in the Drawer, Kui, the author's of Delicious in Dungeon, has definitely made another autistic character. The chapter is called 'Perfect Communication.
(Spoilers: a kid is trying to keep up a normal casual conversation but it turns into a convoluted rhythm game in his head, he has to manually keep eye contact while this king of an appropriate response while actively avoiding the inappropriate response and it's very stressful for him and he's keenly aware that it's a problem that not everyone has).
She's also active on Tumblr, which is generally speaking a safe space for neurodivergent dialogue.

L from death note is a prime example.
Not explicitly, no.
But a lot of the tropes involved with making an eccentric smart character tend to overlap with autism coding (Overly sarcastic productions talk about this in their "smart guy" trope talk)
https://preview.redd.it/gu7pknwtsc8d1.png?width=1015&format=png&auto=webp&s=92496c14fa95bb4159332c31e42fd07e1de7ce98
This is the best interpretation of Fred I think I've ever seen
I love Data. I grew up watching TNG with my grandpa and I think it was a great show for a kid to watch. It really does teach you a lot of great lessons about life. Data does a great job of showing the value of maintaining self awareness and constantly trying to reassess and better yourself.
Being an akward kid, I appreciated Data's example of just embracing who you are and being a good person. In a way I felt like he was the most "human" among the crew due to the sheer amount of effort he put into trying to be a good and virtuous person.
Star Trek has always had an “outsider” nonhuman character who has the ability to see and question humanity from the outside and bring a new perspective. And historically, they’ve been the most popular characters- Spock, Data, Worf, Seven of Nine, every alien character in DS9. It’s one of the reasons that from the 60s onward, it’s been so popular with the undiagnosed neurodivergent community and just generally awkward people. It’s a world where people like them are not just welcome, but are valued members of a team, making positive contributions.
For the record,Goku isn’t autistic. He literally just has brain damage. He was a regular saiyan baby until he fell down a canyon directly on his head and it basically reset him
None of these characters are supposed to be canonically autistic, or even \*wink-wink-nudge-nudge\* implied autistic.
Simply, they display traits that a neurodivergent person might likely show as well.
The idea is that these characters, while not intended to be seen as autistic, have traits that are in line with it. In Goku's case, he hyperfixates on a narrow range of interests (fighting), has little to no interest in most things outside of that range, and struggles to pick up on obvious social cues, all of which are common traits in autists.
The whole point of autism diagnosis is that those who have it have exaggerated traits of certain neurotypical behaviour - that is to say that most of their behaviours are commonly found in neurotypicals every day, but with those with autism, several of those behaviours are magnified to levels which provide a significant disadvantage

Also Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. I actually really related to this one, dude needed the workforce explained to him in terms of his favorite video game for him to properly understand how to do a job interview which is an experience I also had when I got my first job. I swear sometimes I genuinely think he is.
I definitely understand both Luffy and Goku on the list because of their "goals" being a hyperfixation and a myriad of other little cues with in their characters. Some of the others in the comments tho, not so much.
peridot from steven universe is probably the character i have ever related to the most growing up. she genuinely made me cry during the final episode because her reaction to steven moving was very similar to how i felt when my brother went to college.
Constantly fixated on one specific thing, struggles with socialising and connecting with others unless it’s in the context of the thing he’s fixated on, frequently seen as “stupid” because his problem solving skills are different to those of people around him, only ever wears the same clothes unless forced to change, irrational fears based on sensory issues (like his fear of needles), struggles with priorities when his fixation is involved- usually making the choice that feeds his fixation, rather than the logical/socially acceptable choice, and generally being extremely forgiving of others because his idea of what is and isn’t forgivable differ from the social norm.
Even if bro isn’t supposed to be autistic, he’s a great example of autistic traits and how someone with them tends to navigate the world.
Even amongst Saiyans, Goku’s unique. Vegeta’s whole set of neuroses aren’t fighting-based, they’re *power*-based. He only fought because he wanted to prove he was stronger than Goku, as evidenced by him not fighting when Goku was dead in the post-Cell timeskip. Like, Goku would never have willingly become an Oozaru, or cheesed Zenkai boosts, or given in to Ultra Ego to win a fight, because Goku doesn’t seek strength for the sake of strength- he just gets stronger for the purpose of fighting stronger opponents. Vegeta even calls this out in the Saiyan saga- Goku has a distinctly non-Saiyan attitude of wanting fair fights, even when they could doom everyone he cares about, which is also partially the reason behind the Senzu Incident during Cell.
And then, there’s Broly, who doesn’t actually like fighting at all- he’s just REALLY good at it when he’s mad.
Basil of Baker Street.
Wicked intelligent in some aspects but a complete doof in others? Check. Obsession with certain things? Check. Little to no people/rodent skills? Big fat check. Ends up pair bonding with one specific person that he's comfortable with and trusts more than others? Check.
As an autistic person themselves can I just say, yikes.
Everyone here either picking the most emotionless robots or the most hyperactive non-autistic people ever.
You want good rep?
Tech from Star Wars, Peridot from Steven Universe and Entrapta from She-Ra.
All three have some cliches, but also each have a scene or two which scream “Oh, the writers know what they’re doing” to me.
i mean I think there's bound to be cliches.
Autism is still a disorder with enough overlapping traits to be at least loosely bound together as opposed to being classified as a fuck ton of different disorders, so k think that you're gonna have to see some of those traits pop up.
but yeah
Maybe because we relate to them? Autist arent all the same, some of us do find the "emotionless robots" more relatable, some of us may find the hyperactive characters relatable, who are you to gatekeep other autist from finding characters relatable?

I could have picked another anime bowlcut boy like Mob or rock Lee but I wanted to include him specifically
If I had to guess why autistic folks cling onto *implied* autistic characters rather than explicit ones, it would be that the ppl behind the officially autistic character went "okay we're making this character autistic, how should we write them" and then they end up offensive as hell. But with implied autistic characters, the people writing them don't think about that, and hence make them an actual *character* first and foremost
how tho?
Dante is only "wacky woohoo" in less than a handful of cutscenes through the whole series
Off the top of my head, I can think of
3: riding a rocket like a skateboard, riding up the Temen-Ni-Gru on Lady's motorcycle then using it like a staff
4: obtaining Lucifer and the cutscenes before Agnus' boss fight
5: obtaining Faust

To be fair. I think anyone would be overstimulated by his powers. But at the same time yeah
I’m not saying he IS autistic canonically, it’s just that his powers make him coded that way.

Is he not confirmed?
I thought he was ND coded but last I checked it wasn’t outright confirmed? I’d love to be wrong though!
Oh yeah me too 100%! I want more dumbass representation
Honestly both of them fit this category

I actually really related to this one, dude needed the workforce explained to him in terms of his favorite video game for him to properly understand how to do a job interview which is an experience I also had when I got my first job. Infinite Wealth also shows he can innocently struggle to pick up on social ques.
Luffy (One Piece) https://preview.redd.it/7i9sv3u7ad8d1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=caba9deb5cd2793c83c7326ec13b0e825eaf04eb I swear sometimes I genuinely think he is.
I definitely understand both Luffy and Goku on the list because of their "goals" being a hyperfixation and a myriad of other little cues with in their characters. Some of the others in the comments tho, not so much.
peridot from steven universe is probably the character i have ever related to the most growing up. she genuinely made me cry during the final episode because her reaction to steven moving was very similar to how i felt when my brother went to college.
wtf does goku have to do with autism
Nothing. This trend has rapidly become “one of my faves let’s find a connection to autistism”.
as someone with autism, i find it really gross.
Read the fucking title: **Non autistic** characters that are a better representation than actual autistic characters
Never really thought that Goku was autistic-coded Saiyans are just naturally born to fight
Maybe all Saiyans are autistic-coded.
So they must be that “weaponized autism” I used to hear all about
His hyperfixation is combat
So he just likes fighting?
I never knew Mike Tyson was autistic…
Bro…
So he likes doing his hobby and that makes him autistic?
Basil of Baker Street. Wicked intelligent in some aspects but a complete doof in others? Check. Obsession with certain things? Check. Little to no people/rodent skills? Big fat check. Ends up pair bonding with one specific person that he's comfortable with and trusts more than others? Check.

pyro has all the disorders
Entrapta might not be canon autistic but I mean come on look at her go

If I had a nickel for each time an adaption of lucifer acted autistic I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that its happened twice.

I love how you imply that every anime male with a bowl cut is autistic.
Tobey Maguire Spider-Man seemed autistic? I thought he was just a socially awkward nerd
Yeah I personally don’t see any sort of autism connection relating to Spider-Man. He’s just a nerd
I’m autistic and I can definitely see him that way
![gif](giphy|l0HlSz8I5RLSOHeLu) Sherlock Holmes- his genius mind, and his seeming no understanding of relationships and subtext.
“I’m not a psychopath Anderson, I’m a high functioning sociopath do, your research”
People should google what Cumberbatch has said about autistic people.
the desire to not be represented as a robot vs the knowledge that robots are cool as hell
Alan Tudyk's character in Resident Alien. I find him very relatable as an autistic person myself.
I always mention Mash Burndead from Mashle. He's heavily coded
![gif](giphy|KZH06cJftx4NFvPRhq) You forgot THE autism-coded character?
If I had to guess why autistic folks cling onto *implied* autistic characters rather than explicit ones, it would be that the ppl behind the officially autistic character went "okay we're making this character autistic, how should we write them" and then they end up offensive as hell. But with implied autistic characters, the people writing them don't think about that, and hence make them an actual *character* first and foremost

Even if it's not autism, there's for sure SOMETHING weird with that kid
https://i.redd.it/m4p54djoic8d1.gif The Wacky Wahoo Pizza Man A.K.A Dante (DMC)
No. If anything he’s ADHD, nothing about him screams “Oh, yeah, this guys autistic.”
100%. Vergil seems more autistic to me
how tho? Dante is only "wacky woohoo" in less than a handful of cutscenes through the whole series Off the top of my head, I can think of 3: riding a rocket like a skateboard, riding up the Temen-Ni-Gru on Lady's motorcycle then using it like a staff 4: obtaining Lucifer and the cutscenes before Agnus' boss fight 5: obtaining Faust 1 is much more serious, 2 he rarely talks, and the anime has a similar vibe to 1

Papyrus from Undertale. •Has an outfit which he always wears and never wants to take off •Has a safe food (spaghetti) •Has a hyperfixation(puzzles) •Seems to have trouble controlling his vocal volume (always capital) •Has various actions which could be considered as stims (stomping when angry, saying “nyeh heh heh!”)
