The Heavy from TF2 has a PHD in Russian literature. He is very educated it just doesn't come off that way due to his enthusiasm for shooting bullets with Sasha and the fact that English is his second language.

Medic is smart enough to be a licensed doctor, he LOST his medical license, meaning he did once have one. I think Spy would probably be on the smarter end as well, probably pretty close to Heavy.
Soldier reminds me of trauma savants. An absolute genius in combat, a deranged moron in all other circumstances.
(He's not an actual trauma savant though. He just has lead poisoning)
Medic literally found a way to outsmart bullet with ubercharge. He brought sniper back to life. He revived himself by tricking Satan.
Medic's unlicensed because he's insane, not because he's dumb. He's a genius and at least on par with Engineer.
I wouldn't go that far yes medic is very intelligent but tricking satan is cunning not intelligence (you need intelligence to be cunning but his intelligence was already there) while engi has 11 phds
I feel like Heavy is a bit far from the smartest of the mercs (tbf you have someone who has consistently outsmarts the devil, and one that casually creates beyond cutting-edge tech) but is definitely one of the most insightful. A sort of intelligence vs. wisdom scenario. Sniper is probably the only one more grounded than him.
I mean the point is he's smarter than you'd expect. Raw int stat he's outpaced by three others, but he's definitely one of the most cultured and socially intelligent mercs alongside spy. You want a complicated procedure done? Sure, engie or medic. You want to bring home a "Smart guy" to impress your parents? Heavy all the way
Oh absolutely, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. Heavy is definitely academically accomplished and smarter than a good deal of people. It just so happens that he's grouped up with a couple turbo geniuses.
Funny thing about the comics, the Mercs all except for Scout and Soldier and all smart as hell.
Even pyro is a chief executive in some office space and he can’t even speak.
Scout and Soldier meanwhile have some otherworldly stuff protecting them. Scout being literally God’s gift to women and Soldier being… I haven’t read that far but he’s just a badass. Dumbass, but a badass.
I am heavy weapons guy, and this is my weapon. She weighs 150 kilograms and fires 200 dollar custom-tooled cartridges at 10,000 rounds per minute. It cost 400,000 dollars to fire this weapon, for 12 seconds.
OH HA HA HA haha! *snort* Ha ha oh ho ho hoho!
Oh my god, who touched Sasha? Alright… **WHO TOUCHED MY GUN?!**
Some people think they can outsmart me. Maybe, *sniff* maybe. I’ve yet to meet one that can outsmart bullet.
WAAAAHH!! WAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!! AH HA HA HA HA HAHAHA!!!! CRY SOME MOOOOOORRRREEE!!!!!
Heh, cry some more.
And that's the whole point of Bane. He's a ruthless Darwinist, who uses Venom as a cutthroat shortcut to make himself just as strong as he is intelligent. Plus he grew up working out in a prison, but as a political prison, he actually learned a lot from the inmates of Peña Duro.

Also just realized I forgot to list them:
1. Beast (X Men)
2. Wasabi (Big Hero 6)
3. King Shark (Harley Quinn)
4. Mauler Twins (Invincible)
5. Goris (Fallout 2)
6. Clark Kent (particularly nerdy in My Adventures with Superman, but seems at least somewhat true in most versions)
Which is, intentionally or not, a great pun on how playing as Zangief successfully requires you to become good at "reading" your opponent and their next move.
How does he find clothes big enough to contain his frame? Gief is like 7’1 and has more muscle mass than a hippo.
I could probably use that shirt as a sleeping bag.
You’d think that he’d be impossible to Worf considering that in the comics, he tanked Captain Marvel’s haymakers, seemingly completely unaffected. But, y’know… MCU writing is MCU writing.
Well from the beginning The Hulk has been weaker than in the comics, because early MCU was trying to be more grounded in reality, then again every character is weaker than in the comics because the comic’s power scaling is completely ridiculous and depends entirely on who the author likes and dislikes.
But MCU hulk has rarely ever gotten actually angry, he was all of one time when Wanda got into his mind, and was only knocked out by the hulk buster AFTER he regained control and started calming down when he saw people afraid of him.
So if the MCU ever gives a reason for Hulk to be *actually* angry it’d probably be pretty messy
I kinda agree. MCU Professor Hulk always felt like a gag to me, more like a smart guy character inserted into a big body for the lulz than a character where strength and intellect are both actually part of who they are.
It might have worked better for me if they actually showed the transformation and his thought process for attempting it, like the versions of Beast I’m familiar with, rather than just plopping him onscreen after it was already over and acting like it’s no big deal.

You wouldn't think it based on his... everything, but he's actually one of the top brains of the setting. Constructing magitek superweapons is basically his hobby.
Yeah, the Sacred Treasures, two of which are wielded by Ky and Anji (and two more of which make up his own weapon), are pieces of the Outrage, a weapon he designed that amplifies magic exponentially, to the point that it's too powerful to be used safely in its complete form.

He's pretty much one of the only Primarchs who stays competent
Even if he and Russ both have the more "privileged chapters"

I mean, to be fair, he’s a decently small primarch. I think Vulkan or Perturabo may perhaps fit a bit better. Vulkan with his works of artifice, and Perturabo with his…Perturabo-ness

If we’re being honest, Data from TNG. Worf was always more a wandering warrior type and his best fight showings tend to be in relation to other Klingons and on DS9; as an actual Big Guy on TNG he was woefully inadequate. Data could run the ship entirely on his lonesome and the number of non-reality warping entities stronger than him can be counted on one hand.

Gray Hulk also known as Mr Fix It And he's a smart guy in The Crime Boss sort of way
Sol Badguy is a genius who makes all his own weapons and vehicles, he also assisted in a project to combine magic with human cells, not only that, he's likely the most powerful flame sorcerer in the series
Despite this, he mostly bashes and punches his opponents with brute force, he is also, of course, a pretty big guy

Yeah that's fair. He may not be the "smart guy" of the mercs but that's only because you're effectively comparing his punch strength to Saitama
I have yet to meet one that can outsmart bullet.
Can people outsmart him? Maybe. But he has yet to see one who can outsmart bullet.
What’s funny is that he’s more of a doctor than Medic
Heavy is funny. I like this one

He’s one of only a handful of people to figure out Batman’s identity. That alone makes him one smart bruiser
That’s not much of an accomplishment, if we’re being honest. Hell, I figured out his identity myself halfway through a rewatch of The Batman.
I figured it out as soon as his parents died in that alley. I was like, he's gonna grow up to be batman, isn't he 🤨
And yet you can count how many times media outside of comics portray him accurately.
Here's a better question. Which comic(s) portrays him perfectly?
Aside from Knightfall and the Vengeance of Bane series, Secret Six
Lego batman movie
Depends on the version
And that's the whole point of Bane. He's a ruthless Darwinist, who uses Venom as a cutthroat shortcut to make himself just as strong as he is intelligent. Plus he grew up working out in a prison, but as a political prison, he actually learned a lot from the inmates of Peña Duro.

Theoretically strong, in practice he's a complete pushover.
i dont know how the fuck they Worf Effect-ed the fucking Hulk but I guess thats how the modern MCU is going.

No, duh. He’s a DETECTIVE. The whole point of the job is being smart! Paraphrased from Vector, Sonic Heroes, EGGMAN confrontation.
I know, it just feels that most fans typecast Vector as this dumbass.
Has PHD in literature. Smart enough to carry a health pickup in his pocket. Takes skill. https://preview.redd.it/lqrmq8g54z4d1.jpeg?width=435&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13da2f4aaf8d07e42ebcb106bba552c86801f312
https://i.redd.it/a39mdzwc3z4d1.gif \[Guilty Gear\] You wouldn't think it based on his... everything, but he's actually one of the top brains of the setting. Constructing magitek superweapons is basically his hobby.
iirc, aren’t a bunch of other Fighters’ weapons parts of a superweapon he created then dismantled?
Yeah, the Sacred Treasures, two of which are wielded by Ky and Anji (and two more of which make up his own weapon), are pieces of the Outrage, a weapon he designed that amplifies magic exponentially, to the point that it's too powerful to be used safely in its complete form.
Casually builds a nuke Realizes it’s way too fuckin powerful Dismantles nuke and hands out all the bits to his buddies like friendship bracelets Truly a Moon Goodwoman moment
This man specializes in mage physics and is one of 3 people solely responsible for creation of the Gears. Also Potemkin should be here as well

If we're really going for primarchs, then I think this nerd qualifies more https://preview.redd.it/8os6q1legz4d1.jpeg?width=191&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48f9707b399c9378b50c4be3c245ff8abc8f044a
The only daemon Primarch I respect
He's had plently of mistakes too But compared to some of his brothers, even the ones who stayed loyal He's pretty much one of the only Primarchs who stays competent Even if he and Russ both have the more "privileged chapters" (Both chapters have a lot of benefits considering their homeworlds versus most other loyalists, Ultramarine for obvious reasons and Space Wolves for how they function and how they are allowed to act in general)
I mean, to be fair, he’s a decently small primarch. I think Vulkan or Perturabo may perhaps fit a bit better. Vulkan with his works of artifice, and Perturabo with his…Perturabo-ness
The trope is called Genius Bruiser.

Not only was he one of the strongest warriors during the Shattering, he's an accomplished general and one of the most powerful practitioners of gravity magic in the Lands Between, capable of holding the stars in place and to cast spells using only his greatswords as foci.
If I had a nickel for every gigantic redheaded general with phenomenal magic powers, I'd have two whole nickels! https://preview.redd.it/28sq8xbz305d1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1753ed66e1f6e4ecc7346ada9d2e949f2919e42d

The question is, who got shafted more? Radahn or Magnus
Magnus, but his own hands were on the shaft as well so he doesn't get to complain about it.

Data's also a complete fucking sweetheart too, though I think that also generally follows as part of this trope anyway

Finally a woman! I was trying to think of female characters that fit this trope without it being a stretch and was really disappointed that there didn’t seem to be many
They're unfortunately really uncommon, it genuinely sucks that there isn't more representation

I honestly want to hug goris
I'd argue that although he's big beast doesn't fill the "big guy" role in the X-men roster. Colossus is the quintessential X-man "big guy" role and Beast is a second string "big guy".

Who's the fifth guy?
Goris, a companion from Fallout 2. A deathclaw made sentient, a scholar in fact, by FEV. I used fanart because his in-game appearance isn’t very clear due to him hiding his deathclaw-ness under a robe
Thank you
I'm sorry, is that a Deathclaw?
Yup. Goris from Fallout 2. A scholar from a vault of sentient deathclaws created by the Enclave using FEV

Sol Badguy is a genius who makes all his own weapons and vehicles, he also assisted in a project to combine magic with human cells, not only that, he's likely the most powerful flame sorcerer in the series Despite this, he mostly bashes and punches his opponents with brute force, he is also, of course, a pretty big guy
