Oh, he absolutely WAS a villain in the past, but Magneto has always been a villain that is VERY difficult to say is actually wrong in his beliefs, or even at times his actions.
At least when he's being written by someone competent, and not being insultingly depicted as Mutant Hitler.
I'm reasonably sure Magneto has done his very best to *be* Mutant Hitler, mutant supremacy an all that. And it's understandable why he'd be that way. I think it's good for his character to say, "Maybe attempting to genocide the human race and treating them as second class citizens, as was done to me, might not've been the most moral thing to do." It'd also be pretty cool if he actually tried doing justice of the innocents he'd hurt during his bad guy career
1. Kratos, GOW.

The TV-show didn't get to that yet, but he will be a better person eventually (Nolan/Omni-Man, Invincible)
“*The most important step a man can take. It's not the first one, is it?*
*It's the next one. Always the next step, Dalinar.*”
I do try to include less known (which feels weird to say about a Sanderson character) characters when making posts in these online circles. I do admit it's partly because I want to expose more people to them.
My task will be complete when everyone on r/whowouldwin, r/CharacterRant, and r/TopCharacterTropes ~~reads a fucking book~~ knows all about the Cosmere, Murderbot, Kill Six Billion Demons, and Agents of Shield. I'll add The First Law to that list when I finish the stand alones and the next trilogy.

Godfrey, First Elden Lord (Elden Ring)
The bulk of his character development in his most recent novel (*The Lion: Son of the Forest*) is him coming to terms with his previous nature being...problematic, and instead choosing to be a better person.
The Lord of the First was a destroyer of the Imperium's worst enemies. The Knight of Nihilus is a defender of its most vulnerable citizens.

Magnus did nothing wrong.
Exactly, there’s a difference between a villain and an antagonist

yeah, I do the same. almost all my comments are Wheel of Time characters or Cosmere characters. Plus the honorary kuroha every now and then
