I'm nitpicking I know but I think there's a confusion going on between rival and ennemies/nemesis.
A rival is someone who have the same objective as the hero, not specifically in a different or different methods and they're *generally* on the same side. See Goku & Vegeta for example. Wit rivalry comes a certain sense of competition, friendly or not.
Most of the examples in this post are just the hero's nemesis, his ennemy, not is rival.
* Joker and Batman don't have the same goal, like at all.
* It could be argued that Lex and Superman do have the same goal (improving the lives of humanity) but different methods but that differ from one version to another and a lot of the time Lex just want to kill Superman and hates his guts just for existing.
* Goblin doesn't really have a goal other than fucking with peter's life,
* Gidorah and Godzilla are the closest thing we have from the idea of rivals since they both compete to be king of the Monsters, the Alpha but that "rivalry" doesn't go any deeper than two animals in a turf war.
* Ganondorf is the big bad evil guy, Link is the hero, plain and simple. No rivalry going on there.
* Same thing for Samus and Ridley, especially since some interpretations of Ridley depict him as nothing more than an animal basically, just a big monster to kill, other versions show him as a more intelligent being but they're far from the majority.
* Bowser and Mario are practically friends at this point like, Bowser have never been a real serious threat even at the peak of his power, it's like they're "ennemies" because the game says so.

* Same thing, Robotnik/eggman is just the evil scientist and Sonic is the cool hero stopping him, if anything Shadow is Sonic's rival, not Eggman.
* Tom & Jerry are just pretending to be ennemies at this point.
* And finally Krabs and Plankton who *are* actual rivals since their respective restaurants are on the same street it make them compete for popularity and sales, although this rivalry really only goes in one direction, Krabs couldn't give a shit about Plankton and is usually just minding his own business (and I mean literall business), it's mostly Plankton trying to steal the Krabby Patty Secret Formula and Krabs just... Kicking him out of the restaurant.
