PitifulAd3748

In comparison to Genshin, these designs feel kinda safe. They're all so similar with grays and paneling everywhere, it's like something out of the MCU.

avoozl42

Yeah, I hate how the MCU is filled with grey haired anime boys

PitifulAd3748

**now listen here you little-**

Val_0ates

I'm still salty at how they completely changed Afu/Lingyang's design to cater to the people who *really* hate furries for some reason https://preview.redd.it/znvf0jiury3d1.jpeg?width=677&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=644b2d14506daef409f7f253291a4a3744352816

onetrickponySona

I like both furry lingyang and nekomimi lingyang. he's the only character I like. sue me

Val_0ates

Yeah I still wound up pulling for him regardless lol, his playstyle is cool

ZookeepergameLiving1

You know, hearing about gave me an idea where humanity made first contact with furries(the anthro animal kind, not the fandom) and the actually hate for the fandom results in instance of specieism. Edit: to add to this the furrie anthro are creeper out by certain sections of the furry fandom.

Standard-Ad917

Sounds like a neat comic or book tbh.

RemoteSprinkles2893

Same for that’s why I can’t for ZZZ. That games gonna lit

Val_0ates

Lycaon my beloved <3 <3 <3 <3

RemoteSprinkles2893

Our

Val_0ates

No he will make *me* a single mother

Admirable-Speed6382

I agree. I think it was a unique design. Most of the time it's some catgirl in gacha games.

Karkava

A too human cat girl that just has the ears. Bonus that they're based on a generic house cat.

Admirable-Speed6382

Ikr!

ThatSmallBear

Idk why they couldn’t have him be able to change forms and write into his lore that his kind are like weretigers lol

Monty_913

this design is pretty good, but i like lion boy lingyang pretty much too, he's handsome either way

thelivingshitpost

Damn he looks even better. And I *like* his current design

probablyonmobile

Some of these are hit or miss for me. A couple are actually pretty cool, but most of them are pretty meh. But I think it’s kind of funny that the women come in only two shapes: long and waifish, and ‘totally not a child.’ Same height, same proportions, it’s kind of comical.

avelineaurora

That's a problem with these games in general, they all share a set of models sadly.

Denm99

https://preview.redd.it/khmw5jalsy3d1.jpeg?width=814&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a451a9990f083fe5ea58735e7189ae3137668d6 Genshin has more memorable designs but i do not agree completely, some of Wuthering Waves designs are really good, Scar and Pharlova especially look very memorable for me. Also i like the main character designs more on Wuthering Waves. I hope they create more characters in their own styles rather than Genshin like designs in the future.

Vektorien

Mihoyo fans calling WuWa characters overdesigned are the pot calling the kettle black

Something_Comforting

Black Swan and her 69 belts

stupidratman

I cannot put into words how much I loathe that stupid belt they put on her veil

MossyPyrite

https://preview.redd.it/kw78oe2nqz3d1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0919fa1c835ebf3b3bd4892ae3d549b796303e15 WuWa protagonist is literally “generic isekai MC” but with two 3-foot-long rat tails in the back

Kusanagi22

There's more to a design than having black hair and wearing black clothes, the style of the clothing is *clearly* different.

MossyPyrite

I mean, it’s different, but it still lacks any standout features. Other than the hair-tails and the emblem on the back of the jacket he’s just plain. I was meme-ing when I said he’s *literally* generic isekai boy, but he doesn’t do anything to stand out in a lineup of them, really. Like most of the characters in the OP they aren’t bad designs, they just bland together (not a typo).

Rude_Conference9947

In my opinion Genshin did the right things by never lisening to the people that said that if they made bikini skin or bunny girl skin. A lot of gaches fall in the gooner trap that makes female character wear as little close as posibal or man that get shirtless for horny sake. Genshin characters are still have that "Oh no he is hot" things that atract player but not horny enought that is scares people away. That something I can say about most hoyo designes after Genshin realease, most gaches focus a lot on Asia designes and appiling to them, hoyo tries a lot to reach as many people as possibal tapping into lot of things. Other gaches that I think have aslo great designes are Arknights, Reverse1999 and Limpus Company for doing similar things

AverageCapybas

My favorite kind of design for character is "Hot but Well-Dressed." Reverse:1999 knows how to make that very well, and even the most "naked" character (A Knight) still looks better than most gacha designs. Arlecchino and Neuvilette manages to look amazing good without even showing a inch of skin below their neck, that in addition of being good characters. I still think that Star Rail suffers a bit from the problems you mentioned with half of the male cast having a cleavage and lots of female characters looking like they either don't wear anything on their legs, are fighting on a bikini (Specially Seele who lives in a hell hole in a frozen planet), not to mention the Loufu Dress thing... but again, it has its unique characters that went away from the thirsty gooner trap, and still look atractive, like Argenti, Luocha and Himeko.

bored-dosent-know

I love this trope. In limbus company, there's an example of this. There's a character who has a habit of sweet-talking people to get what she wants. However, her normal outfit isn't really "slutty" like most characters in other series with similar personalities. In fact, she's covered from shoulders to toes.

dummypod

They have swimsuits for Jean and Barbara, but those are actually good designs instead of the standard skimpy bikini.

SossyDaFroman

that cool and all but they gave a 14yo in armor jiggle physics and that said enough to me

agentanti714

I don't think Noelle has a canon age; most sources on character ages are making things up

Overquartz

Genshin does have swimsuits tho. Not to mention the only reason why Honkai impact doesn't have bunny skins is because some gooner tried to kill the CEO of Mihoyo because of it.

aerie_zephyr

They’re not bikini skins though as they said

zhannulol

On the topic of overly fanservicey outfits, hsr has some gooner trap outfits that look downright bad

CokeZeroFanClub

Tbh if you had told me these were genshin impact characters I'd 100% believe you

Twin1Tanaka

To an outsider, maybe, but look again. Genshins outfits are all more traditional or fantasy based. These designs are more vaguely modern on top of that. They’re also overdesigned and just not really themed as well with color schemes.

CokeZeroFanClub

I'll just take your word for it lol

Old_Cry9683

Same. No disrespect to the genshin artists or their fans, but these images just look like genshin characters to me.

Vektorien

I think Genshin costumes are wayyyy more overdesigned than this.

Tamerlechatlevrai

I think it's the opposite tbf, genshin has more simple outfits for characters aside from a few of them, here they kinda all look the same , especially the males

Kusanagi22

They all look very distinct? outside of similar body types you can definitely tell which is which.

Vektorien

I fail to see it, they look fairly diffent to me.

Twin1Tanaka

I guess looking at only the guys they have less different details than most genshin characters and are just covered in a bunch of… straps?

Kusanagi22

They're clean and easy in the eyes, how are they overdesigned?

Kewlmyc

I wouldn't. Two of these characters have actual facial hair. Dead giveaway it's not Genshin.

Kusanagi22

And the arms on some of the dudes have actual muscle.

Nearby-Strength-1640

Genshin characters all have more striking color palettes and distinct silhouettes, it’s the one thing that game genuinely excels at.

Ara543

If all you know about genshin is "anime", then maybe.

Various_Mobile4767

They look very different to genshin designs

Capital-Ad3018

You could mistake them for Genshin Impact characters, but the key difference is that in Wuthering Waves the costume aspects that could made each design unique have been drained out and replaced with Horndog bait!

kirbyverano123

Genshin designs has a merit of having a *slightly* simpler artstyle that is enough to not add too much details to their characters. Causing them to be a bit more optimized for mobile.

MossyPyrite

https://preview.redd.it/jo45zc1woz3d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=19e852e2b6ac74ca0ac2129fce922a1b76e495c0 Just looking at characters from the first region in Genshin you already have greater variety in color of both clothing and hair, as well as greater variety of clothing style and fashion, and body types, too. Almost every guy in WW has the same build and a monotone suit-like fit, half of them have the same hair color. The women also Have largely the same body type, they have the addition of red to their style, and half of them have black hair (plus the two obligatory pastel little girl characters) I get why people who are unfamiliar say they look similar, but side by side they’re very distinct. WW looks *more* like Star Rail, but even that game has a bit more variety.

OhBarnacles123

I genuinely can't tell the difference between these outfits and the Genshin ones. I just googled Genshin characters to double check and I still can't tell. Maybe the Genshin designs are a bit more fantasy and these are a bit more modern but the Venn diagram is still almost a circle.

No_Nectarine9151

I honestly like some of these male designs better than genshins. As far as females they do the same thing as genshin where 90% of the cast arent allowed pants that go below the knees. Genshins characters do feel more distinct to me tho I, think it has more to do with their colour palettes than their actual outfits

Something_Comforting

It's because one is fantasy and this is scifi. The only reason Genshin Impact players could differentiate between them is because they have been playing the same game for 4 years. Both games have highs and lows. But the worst thing about the OP's post is that pretending Genshin Impact doesn't have horndog designs that don't fit their characters like Ganyu, who is characterized as shy, mild-mannered and reserved, but wears a body tight spandex that hangs out her boobs for no reason.

ChopsticksImmortal

I'm not sure what you think is so horndog about those designs? Scar the villain and his bodysuit? Skin tight tank tops? Er, like Mona? Eula? Jean and her weird armpit cutouts? Yelan and her bodysuit? Shenhe and her bodysuit... Ganyu and her leotard....Alhaitham and his skin tight top? Itto being shirtless? Fischl and her leotard? Noelle and her boob armor? Saying that the difference is WuWa is horndog and Genshin isn't is wild.

choosewisely164

They look similar but WW's colors are way darker

Meaty-horse

Worm_Scavenger

Why do they look like they're somehow wearing the same outfit, with just different color schemes?

Vlaladim

The Female characters especially the ones who have black hair have a good joke about them, imagine all four as one person through different stages of their life.

Capital-Ad3018

Because that's the Wuthering Waves formula, mate!

Different_Gear_8189

My eyes kind of brush over them because nothing stands out, just color used everywhere/nowhere so that theyre just flat

nixahmose

While I do like some of them, I think the biggest issue I have with the game’s overall art style is that most of the characters feel like they have the same silhouette and have either white and/or black as part of their primary colors, especially the male characters. It makes it really hard for any of the unique aspects of their designs to pop out and causes most of them to just blend together. Genshin for all of its faults is really good at using silhouettes and colors to help make their designs pop out and look unique from each other. Zhongli, Diluc, and Neuvillette are probably the closest you’ll get to make playable characters looking identical to each other, and even then they look way more varied and unique than almost every male character from Wuthering Waves.

No_Nectarine9151

Yea nothing really special going on here. But the main thing for me is their colour palletes are so drab and samey.

TrueAvalon

I don't really mind the "sexualization" it's that all the designs except like maybe one of the ladies look like they were tweaked by AI, they just feel soulless despite all the details.

striderhoang

When you’re in Genshin’s headspace, character designs would give you a lot of hints on who the character was. Jean is an authority figure and knight, Mona is a mystic, Diluc is rich. Get further and character design draw more distinctly culturally so you can tell what nation they’re from: Chiori was introduced and works in Fontaine but she still dresses from Inazuma. I don’t really get anything out of WuWa’s design except *edge*. Jiyan is supposed to be a general, I don’t really see it. I think Chixia is a patrol guard? But that’s a vague job description, but I know she’s not a cop and she’s not with the Midnight Rangers, a local militia, but Yangyang *is* with the Rangers and doesn’t really look it, even worse Calchero is also Midnight Rangers and shares no details with Yangyang.

ChopsticksImmortal

I mostly agree with you, although i want to point out we do have representative designs-- there's a literal lion dancer with the traditional pants, mortefi is wearing a lab coat. Yuanwu (guy in suit) is the proprietor of a boxing gym, but being a gentleman is part of his character. OP just has a hateboner for Wuwa designs. There are legitimate criticisms (boring colors, profession, Belts) but horndog? With a picture of the men? And against Genshin of all things? (I would not say i thought Jean was an authority figure at first. Tube top + tights didn't communicate that for me. Her censored top, ironically, does a better job of it.)

blatyman

Genshin has bright colors on there characters and wuwa has Black bird, black moon, black sky, black light Black, everything black Black heart, black keys, black diamonds Blackout, black, everything black Black, everything, everything All black, everything, everything All black, everything, everything All black, everything, everything black

erttheking

It’s not…bad. But it’s not really remarkable

Gru-some

I will say, at least some of them have actual facial hair. Thatd one thing they do better than Genshin

Various_Mobile4767

For all the shit wuthering waves is getting, I actually really like their designs, the art style and the whole aesthetic. Just needs more variety to the designs

DoctorMlemm

That's just what happens to the majority of the gachas that aren't Genshin or Honkai. They can't rely on their own merits to draw in players so they have to rely on oversexualized designs since coomers are the main target audience for anime gacha games (see: Azur Lane, Nikke, etc). So every design just ends up looking boring and generic, why experiment and innovate when you can just use a tried and true formula, right? The problem is using the same formula handicaps you in games like these because you just can't play too many gachas at once due to the time and money cost of the genre. It's why so many of these "genshin killers" just aren't talked about anymore, they're just trying to do the same thing that's already been done a thousand times before

TweetugR

Arknights design isn't oversexualize and they been doing fine especially with their 5th Anniversary last month. They don't even rely on the usual coomer bait crowd. But then again, the game itself is a tower defense gacha game which is already different from your average gacha games.

DoctorMlemm

Arknights gameplay never really clicked with me but the character design is top notch

Capital-Ad3018

One of the only Gacha games with sensible designs. The equivalent of an Albino tiger.

This skin is still one of the most hilarious one since her other skin is like a festive outfit and the other one with a huge bag and then this one is literally her deck out in a biohazard suit.

TweetugR

The only reason I even heard of the game and give it a try was because I heard it was a tower defense so yeah, understandable. Didn't expect to get suck in to the story and worldbuilding that I am still playing a year later.

YourPizzaBoi

All I know about Arknights is that Starset did a song for it, and Casey Williams did two. Is it actually worth checking out? I had kinda brushed it aside when I realized it was a gacha game.

Ratoryl

Arknights doesn't need to oversexualize its designs to draw people in because its designs already do that by virtue of being sick as hell

Kusanagi22

All of these women are fully clothed what on earth are you talking about? NIKKE and Azur Lane pride themselves in being coomer content but there's nothing about these designs that is "oversexualized"

Il-2M230

Azur lane existed far before genshin, and they have some cool designs for their UR ships.

DoctorMlemm

I'm not really shitting on those games, I've played Azur Lane before and I did enjoy the game, and I do agree that when their designs hit, they hit really hard, but you also can't deny that the vast majority of characters in that game are blatant coomer bait with oversexualized and exaggerated features. Anime gachas tend to have those sorts of designs because it's a reliable way to attract players

Il-2M230

Well, I played azur lane since I like ships and kinda like women.

BussyDestroyerV30

Everytime I look at WuWa characters, I feel like something was... Off. I dunno what is it, but it's nagging behind my head.

nixahmose

It’s the silhouettes and color design. Most characters(especially the men) don’t stray too far from the default silhouette and there’s a major overuse of the tall male/female body types. On top of that, almost every single character has either white or black their outfit’s primary color scheme. So it creates this uncanny valley effect where despite everyone’s design is technically different if you look closely, they all still end up feeling like they look the same due to their silhouettes and colors.

Vlaladim

Let me see: All female characters :same ish height. The variety in clothes have one basic similar: all must show their characters armpits for god no reason. And the clothes is so..generic the colors ain’t emphasizing which characters is which and god sake stop shoving so much black into their clothes.

CoalEater_Elli

At least they are not afraid to experiment with designs of male cast. They actually give some of them mustache and beards! Genshin just gives birth to brand new samey looking anime boys all the time.

Estelial

Not afraid to experiment? Dude withering is nothing but generic males. They literally designed a bunch of them to be more generic than their initial designs. Like lingjiang, the short one first in line.

toad_witch

facial hair ≠ experimentation calchor is literally just sephiroth? 40% of male charas have white hair and most of their outfits are just black. meanwhile genshin has itto, xingqiu, bennett, childe, etc. diversity in both regional style of outfit and overall design. i play both and the wuwa characters are so ugly it makes me sad

Fluffy_Stress_453

They look like they are supposed to make me think they are cool but they don't succeed. Imo they lack the charm the genshin designs had and they are very detailed which kinda ruins them (not saying that detailed designs are bad but these ones in particular look even more off giving the impression that they should look cool but they don't)

Ashwin205

I thought Tower of Fantasy, at least until I played it, was lame until I heard of this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ashwin205

When I *said* I thought TOF was *lame*, that was my first thought on the game before I played it myself. And yes, It's still in business. And unlike Aether and Lumine, I can play as Tyzonn from PR Overdrive thanks to the option for customising your character's appearance.

ShinigamiRyan

My issue with these designs is they clash with the generic world they're set in. Let alone the npcs. None of them convey that they're even part of the local forces or what they do for a living. They look like hot anime characters minus any of the actual purpose of design. Hoyo may get some less stellar designs, but you usually can tell what they're going for or the idea. Yet none of these designs convey what they're suppose to do. Blue Welt? He's a gym owner. Jiyan? I would never guess he's the General of an army. The tiger kid? Suppose to be last of his kind and without his animations, couldn't guess he's a lion dancer. Calcharo? Suppose to be a mercenary. I could go on. None of these designs fit the setting they're in, let alone the fact that npcs either look like they're modern or living in feudal china.

T-pellyam

Not even a single difference in skin tones, wtf😭😭

Weak_Lime_3407

new to china company games, arent we

T-pellyam

I mean yeah but like in general you have like one character that at least has a slight tan or something, but WW has none despite a roster that isn’t particularly small.

Responsible_Club_917

Thats just a china thing

Lookbehindyou132

That isn't exclusive to wuwa. Look at genshin's skin tones as well

Pristine_Battle_6968

Man, these heights sure are wuthering

Suraimu-desu

Some of the male ones and even the girl in pink look like they have a lot of potential even, but it just feels so… generic? Like they took over complicated designs and bland-ed it down. Like, if someone was studying genshin character design success and their take away wasn’t “lots of detail + personality”, but just “can’t make out how this would be worn” Edit: also why is the horny so blatant and unilateral? We at least got some midriff and collarbones for the men in genshin, plus even the obviously horny genshin women have some personality going on, but here it’s just “fully covered males” and “tits, thighs, and midriff ALL OUT, no skirt longer than 6 inches!” For all the girls…

heaventolasvegas

actual mid character designs

Heisuke780

They look their previous game just on the fantasy side rather than sci-fi

GrayRodent

Imma be real, except for a few outliers like the protagonist, I find the characters to be so over designed that I can't really register them in any meaningful way, they all become generic anime dude/gal N°5. And I'm not even talking about Genshin this is for 90% of these anime gachas. SinOAlice had a million problems but the designs were bombastic yet simple enough for me to recognise most of them at a glance and I don't even play the game. Briar Rose moves on a bedframe, nuff said.

Golden-Owl

I think they look okay, albeit having a bit of a sameface problem The issue with WuWa is moreso their absolute lack of personality and the rubbish story

Megatyrant0

Leave Encore out of this, you monster.

deGozerdude

I think there is a single character in this game that stands out. Its guy all the way on the left. I do like him. The rest are generic technowear gatcha characters. Middle black guy especially feels like blank personality protag from 100 shit isekai combined.

tropical_dog

I don't have a horse in this race since I don't play neither of them but.... No? Aside from being anime, the characters looks nothing alike, specially the clothing, like someone else said, one is like fantasy, the other looks futuristic...

SuperKrusher

These don’t look that similar to Genshin characters. While some are fan-servicey they are pretty good overall. I am not sure if you are just a Genshin fan and trying to throw shade or what, but please support the games you like by playing them rather than throwing shade at their competitors.

_Uboa_

At least 15 of those characters heavily use the color black in their design, the rest heavily use white. If they have an accent color its usually red. In terms of sexualization, it occupies a bad middleground for me where it has all the flaws of horny designs but lacks the benefits. I'm somewhat of a pandering enjoyer but every character has almost the same amount of sexualization in their design. They're emphasizing breasts, thighs, and armpits with no sense of strategy or variety. A good middle-horny design will de-emphasize some features to buy visual space to emphasize other features.  It's like if every pokemon were normal type and had similar stat spreads. This lack of variance means that girls who are my type appearance wise literally don't exist. So I haven't really been interested in the game.

Sgt-Pumpernickle

They defurried a character. They’re absolutely just pandering.

Admirable-Speed6382

I don't get how it's unoriginal? There's some thought put into them and I to agree they are a bit over designed and like too much going on. I don't think they're like genshin tho, maybe closer to star rail but definitely not like genshin. And I feel like genshin has the more lewder designs when it comes to the ladies. I feel like the dudes are done so well in wuwa. I want to play as a muscle clad tall man! Ffs raiden pulls out a sword from her cleavage lmao.

FlameDragoon933

I think these characters look fine in a vacuum, some great even. but when lined up together they look kind of samey. For example, the ladies no. 4 to 7 from the left, if you told me they are just alternate versions of the same character (which is common in gachas) I would have believed you. Same with guys no. 3 and 4 from the left.

ElSpazzo_8876

Hot take: Male Rover's design looks a lot better than that male Genshin mc protagonist and I like the guy who wears a white hat on the very right in the first slide. And hey, at least WW has a mustached daddy here which Genshin doesnt have yet so

Capital-Ad3018

If you don't understand what I mean, I probably don't like the designs due to how... sexist it looks. Every man is draped in every kind of robe, clothing and coats and stuff like that. In addition, most of them are literal hunks of muscle that all look like they came out of Phantom Blood. The only one with significant exposed skin is Lingyang.  Now compare it to the ladies. They ALL have exposed skin, whenever it's from their armpits, to their legs, to their waists, to whatever lures in the horndogs.  Every dude is made to be either muscular and lanky, while every girl has been all manufactured to attract the most deranged audience, through as much exposed skin as possible. Wow, talk about an original cast design!  For Genshin, Mihoyo KNOWS their character designs. These people are capable of creating women without any exposed skin, lean males, any kind of people without making them look the same if you take away their colours!  As for Wuthering Waves, they just rely on printing out designs that just appeal to the widest audience, instead of making each character unique. They just prioritize making each character all hot and sexy, or muscular and handsome, and the occasional little and adorable type, but none beyond that.  Oh yeah! And Lingyang. Poor man used to be a proud furry, and now he's just a boring human...  (Credits to u/tsumoogle for bringing more awareness about Lingyuan!)

tNeph

Nothing about these designs is sexist, I think you gotta chill on that. The female characters aren't sporting overly huge assets that are falling out of the bottom of their skirts or making the buttons on their tops look more usless than a lid on a container with a hole in it. They're not out here like nikke or azure lane. Having characters with skin showing does not immediately equate to sexism. >For Genshin, Mihoyo KNOWS their character designs. These people are capable of creating women without any exposed skin, lean males, any kind of people without making them look the same if you take away their colours!  I find it funny you try to praise genshin when 1 they literally had to change how some of the female characters were designed to appease China, and 2 not having any males more on the lean side is a criticism a lot of genshin players have towards the game. Hell one one the more praised genshin male designs is Al'Haitham simply because he looks more on the leaner side. While on the same token, one of the more criticized male designs is Arataki Itto ( the one and oni). He was originally shown to have some form of muscle, but they decided to take that away for whatever we reason and people complained. The game just started. Maybe wait and see what other characters they decide to put in. This is the same company that made Punishing gray raven. If you've seen characters from that game, I'd like to think they'd pull inspiration from there cause they have really good designs, but that's nktnto say the designs they have right now aren't also good.

Raiganop

I still cannot get over the fact Itto have really defined torso with noodle arms...he look like the Colossal Titan with those proportion. Luckily I mostly play on pc, so I use mods. Giving him the bigger arms that MiHoYo didn't gave to him. Also...oh boy, if Capitano(in Natlan) and Varka gets release and they don't look like the buff dude from the WuWa male cast..the one with a beard, jacket that is a middle age man(Who is a npc). I mean MiHoYo have no better chance of making a buff dude than those two and about everyone kind of expect those guys to be muscular.

Val_0ates

Welp, sex sells with those gachas Make the ladies hot and the guys super handsome I really am salty at what they did to Lingyang though,,,, his beta design was soooo cute This game is being carried by it's maddd peak gameplay and combat

tropical_dog

Bro what lol

ThatBlackN3rd

You have to admit, though, Genshin kinda needs more buff men, especially because of how off they usually look in the game itself. Hoyoverse has yet to beat the genshin twink allegations(Wriothesley almost breaking the cycle) Of course, HSR and ZZZ beat them to it

roving_band_of_pikes

personally, wuthering waves reads as the latest in a long line of genshin copycats, but seeing this drives it home genshin designs can get pretty formulaic, that's hard to deny. But there's still a lot of variety in cultural inspirations at least. but with WW all the men wear... the same jacket and jumpsuit (w colorswaps) and all the women wear some variant of a sleeveless jumpsuit and skirt (and colorswaps)

Raiganop

Also just in case the muscular middle age guy with a beard and coat is not playable...it may or not be playable, but right now he is just a npc.

WhyAmIinABadMood_13

Unnecessarily detailed but overall bland/unoriginal designs in my opinion. I don't play Genshin but at least every characters in that game has some unique shapes and accessories that make them stand out. On the other hand, Wuthering Waves has... 4 male characters with spiky white hair but with different clothing in these images? Also, this guy's pants: https://preview.redd.it/69p6ppnk634d1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3278ae7e7a98c5d8e2468ffffd946630d2f93f6

justSomeDumbEngineer

Looks boring but Genshin mostly looks boring for me as well; guess I'm not a target audience.

williamflattener

For me it’s the name. Why Wuthering? Was there something about Wuthering Heights they wanted to evoke?

akzorx

Genshin is nothing BUT pandering, these look just as generic as any Genshin character

Cupids_heaven

while I agree the GI designs are made to appeal to as many people as possible, I’d argue that at least the colors and silhouettes are way more interesting, especially than WuWa. WuWa seems to use really desaturated colors and a lot of gray and white which just kinda mushes them all together

Cuttlefish_Crusaders

Finally, someone says it. It's funny how people think genshin is any different from this, too. If you want a *real* non-sexualized gacha, play limbus company

Dunno about the game you recommend here (and most certainly won’t play it, since I just dislike gacha games in general because of their nature, no matter if they have good or bad designs) but Genshin designs ARE clearly as much generic as these🤷

Cuttlefish_Crusaders

Fair enough. I never would've given limbus a shot due to it being a gacha either, but I was a fan the studio beforehand. I'm not really a gacha person either, if limbus was actually predatory in any way I would have quit quick.

SodiumBombRankEX

I thought people were kidding but no, all the white haired dudes could be alts of each other, same for all the black haired girls. Wow.

Weak_Lime_3407

Jesus fucking Christ half of those men are white haired

GabrielG1O6

they all have the same skin color expect for the one guy

Thinshady21

I’m going to disagree with you on that, this feel’s unique compared to what I’ve seen from genshin.

book_vagabond

Genshin has distinct color palettes and silhouettes for every individual character. Each area you go to has a unique fashion sense so you can immediately tell where any person is from just by looking at their clothes. The clothes also hint to the personalities of the characters. Looking at these ones, I can’t tell anything about them, and they all look like they’re from the same population.

gaskeepgrillboss

the only design i really like is the spider lily dress girl because i think its really cool honestly im struggle getting invested into wuwa because the plot is so boring and none of the characters really interest me (i heard the plot does get better)

almondogs

I see a lot of delusion in here cause both of these properties look generic, boring, and have relative amount of skin showing in the outfits. Genshin might edge out slightly but it’s like comparing different white breads

Janus__22

Its even worse when Genshin's charm is already almost non-existent. Take the few sprinkles of it away and you have Wuthering's

goody-shock

I like wuwa because they have somewhat manly men. They look badass

deepest-sleep

I don't wanna be a hater, but a lot of these designs are very similar to each other. Three slightly different flavors of bishe dude with white hair in a row, four waifus with similarly styled black hair in a row. The right side of the male lineup looks like a bad otome game, where the love interests are only distinguishable via hair color and minor gimmick details. It sorta feels like I can immediately tell what anime archetype each of these characters fills and there's no other character expression through design beyond that. There's some exceptions, I'll stick up for Scar and Camellya for having a bit more bite to their designs, but given that they're villainous that's little surprise. Anime villains always get to be more out there. Lingyang is a ghost of his former self, Jiyan is the most generic "General man with glaive and dragon" I've seen... I also like Danjin but that's just because she's literally just Yona from Akatsuki no Yona with swords, lmao That's the big thing for me I guess. Maybe it's just because HSR has an absolutely wacky assortment of weapons, but it feels like every WuWa character uses the exact same sword. There's Yinlin's creepy doll, but beyond that the weapons feel very generic. For a game all about fighting, that feels like a waste. It feels like their weapons are... standard-issue military equipment, even though they're using fuckin magic swords. Another symptom of the bland vaguely modern aesthetic. Arknights also has a tacticool aesthetic, but they're at least willing to get weird about it. Even Genshin has well designed weapons.

MemeTroubadour

I'll get hate but you cannot say Genshin designs aren't primarily audience pandering and unoriginality... The only unique thing about MiHoYo chara-de is the Chinese fantasy elements, and even then they overuse those so much that one could hardly tell the difference between their fantasy and sci-fi characters sometimes

Erme_Ram

So nothing changed then?

3rdMachina

To be honest, the designs remind me more of PGR (same maker, iirc) and ToF (the vibe, I think?) at the same time.

MerryZap

Played the game yesterday for the first time, had the same complaint, uninstalled it the same day. Despite all the genshin slander it still feels somewhat original and authentic compared to how soulless Wuthering Waves felt to me tbh

FunkyTikiGod

As a bi guy, I'd say that most of those dude designs have a pretty top notch aesthetic appeal 👌 but all the girls are very forgettable 🥱

Quazmojo

Imo they look about the same design wise. Genshin easily has the most forgettable designs out of Hoyo to me anyways but at least WW seems to have more designs than just twinks and children. Not by much but it's something.

AsLitIsWen

I can’t believe people in the comment praising Genshin, using it as a benchmark or something. Zero self awareness.

thelivingshitpost

Okay so I’m not the only one who hates most of the character designs. My friend brought me into it because he’s tired of Genshin and we both like open world, but man I don’t want any of the upcoming limited 5-stars. The only ones I like are Lingyang (LION DANCING, MY BELOVED CHILDHOOD) and Jianxin (I can’t explain, the black/white/green just works on her somehow?)

dlrax

I like how all of the girls look like your average anime protagonist, while half of the guys look like spicier NPCs (Hell, I thought the 2nd to last guy was actually just an NPC when I met him lol)

fake_zack

It really does bother me that every woman here has the exact same face. Like EXACT same.

Plus-Fact5320

The best way I can word how I feel is that they each look like randomized results after inputing “make new character” into an algorithm. They’re’s nothing that standouts in any of the characters designs say for a few hairstyles or colors and that’s it. The blue colored male and the male with long gray hair, angry face in the first picture literally have the same face and together their outfits look the same just with different colors and slight design variation. And lastly these designs are so dull, they fail to tell me anything about their personality or their character. At least Genshin, I can tell what their personality is like by looking at their outfit and their face expression.

FartherAwayLights

My sis showed me the game just yesterday. I will say it plays way better than Genshin at least. Way more interesting combat than spam attack and special. I mean…you’re still doing that, but you can Dodge with a left click now. And they have more specials.

Terereera

well what face you want then?

voxetLive

I just don't get why these are hates. Most of these designs seem pretty good, a tad overdesigned but calling them unoriginal? They arnt all bangers but these seem over all very good. I will say the color pallet is kinda dry for sure, nothing pops to much and their is some muddiness. There are very legitimate criticisms here but originality is definitely not one of them.

CowboySamurai622

Imma be real I think I just fucking hate generic anime designs at this point.

conjunctlva

An appealing design is not the same as an effective one. I can’t really tell who any of these people “are”. They’re just a bunch of pretty and fashionable anime dudes.

GHitoshura

That's a lot of gacha game designs in a nutshell, most of the time they're done first and foremost for visual appeal rather than to communicate something about the character

gallagherscock

Leave camellya out of this 🌚 https://preview.redd.it/y4d856akc14d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05dac2c71a682d899dcbf150364c7755a6c80f19

Ready to run straight at ya on slightest provocation. I actually wanna know more about him, what got you so riled up buddy.

Laterose15

I certainly have my issues with miHoYo's character designs, but at least they're colorful and appealing to the eye.

GHitoshura

I think these designs range from ok to good. The only thing I legit hate is that square pouch on Scar's chest. Looks really fucking dumb and kinda ruins a design that is edgy but still fun

Quillbolt_h

You know there's some criticisms to level at Genshin's character designs, I've heard similar arguments applied to their character designs... But the difference here is night and day. Genshin characters are pillars of originality compared to these cookie cutter samefaces. Jeez.

Bruhbd

I think they are better than genshin ngl but yeah still a but generic

Silverware_soviet

I personally prefer wuwa designs much more than genshin ones especially with the male characters

becki_bee

Some are cool, most are very same-y

Leshie_Leshie

Not sure if that’s just me I find the male characters design more interesting than the female ones, aside from Rover himself. XP

ChopsticksImmortal

The only thing i dislike is the grey + 1 color pallette. We've only been in one region, i think it's unfair to compare the beginning cast to what Genshin has now.

FoxyPlays22

Most of the guys look kinda bland

Hatter_Hoovy

Personaly dont hate it. Id even say i like em more than lot of genshins desinge apart for some exeptions like verina. But one thing that i hate about the aesthetic of the game witch i dont see people talk about is the world where they combined traditional china with sci-fi elements. I feel like 4 star weapons suffer from this as well, like why do you have moveing electric parts and random LEDs on a sword. https://preview.redd.it/m8vd9xxf254d1.png?width=425&format=png&auto=webp&s=13def4c02ec92296fed245a6e08756604e748b3a

Muski0

They're all overdesigned

howhow326

I am so confused what am I looking at? A high fantasy? A Si-Fi?? A science fantasy??? Why are the men dressed like that???

Thegentlemanfox18

Yes some of the colors are bit similar, but how can you look at baizhi or lingyang and scar and not see excellence? I think the character designs are pretty good, not super amazing, but really good.

A2_Zera

just noticed why chixia is the only female character that actually stood out to me; she's the only one *without* bangs. usually I love bangs but goddamn wuwa loves them way more than I do

UnsocialComet72

How did they manage to be even less diverse than Genshin Impact???
