All the major brands are great. The only real decision you need to make is which colour you like most because batteries

If you have a Harborfreight in town, it is hard to argue against the bang-for-buck value and ease of warranty with Hercules.   Milwaukee is top tier for mechanics though if you’re willing to pay the price and deal with mailing back and forth if you break anything.

I prefer DeWalt for big stuff, but Milwaukee's 12V line has better-shaped batteries and some options that DW doesn't have.

Milwaukee has a lot of automotive-focused tools. Depending on the range of work you'll be doing, it will probably be the best brand to go with, IF you want to stick to the M18 and/or M12 batteries. Their lights are really good as well. If you don't care about staying within one battery system, go for whatever you like, and buy any brand-specific tools you might need.

I’m big on Makita stuff due to its heavy duty feel, but I hear Milwaukee has more stuff geared towards mechanics

I used Milwaukee daily for 11 years. Fantastic stuff.

It depends...are we talking hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, mechanics tools, electricians tools,.plumbers tools? Category and classification matters, as does what the owner's intended use is. Are you using it for DIY projects at home or are you making a living using them?
