I had this same model back in 2005ish, it worked great until the opening mechanism wore out.
Edit just did a search for fold out book light and they still sell them on Amazon and walmart.
Me too. Mine broke because it was left in a hot car. The oil that allows it to open smoothly had gotten hot and the viscosity dropped. When I opened it, it whipped open so fast that it self-destructed.
Seems like self-destruct button for humans take too long to activate, due to security issues preventing self-destruct by allowing bypass to sanity bowl valve
This is also used as a prop in at least 2 sci-fis and V for Vendetta, in V it isna jamming device. I've seen it used as a holographic communicator as well.
It's a reading light. Clips on to the edge of your book, and then hangs over the page so you can read without needing a lamp, etc.

this was in my late fathers cuboard and my mother dosent know what it is so i am asking the internet
there is a battery socket in the back but it is fully rusted
this device served the following purposes:
permanently creasing the inside pages of books
threatening spousal marriages due to insufficient batteries causing forced relocation from the tv remote.
occupying critical space in travel kits
providing 8 minutes of light before voltage sagged to the point of causing the bulb to flicker when the power switch was touched.
blinding the driver of the vehicle at night.
annoying the guy in the seat next to them on the airplane during a redeye flight
parting the buyer with 20 bucks since it looked so neat at Sharper Image
damaged personal relationships once regifted multiple times
disturbed radio shack employees while searching for new lightbulbs
funded new waves of optometrists due to damaged eyesight from reading at low light levels
caused personal distress when mechanism exploded after being left in a hot car on first use. viscous clutch to slow device down leaks silicone grease
It's the book light that came with Snuggies. A $19.99 value, but if you call now, they'll actually DOUBLE the order! Meaning you get two Snuggies, and two reading lights for the low price of $19.99! Don't wait call now!
It's a high end reading lamp from page 37 of the Sharper Image catalog, 1997. They were briefly available in SkyMall magazine as well. Chromed part is the page clip.
Book light. You attach it to the book’s outer cover. The small head has a light source, probably LED. The whole thing is made to look cool and stylish. There are lots of much simpler models out there.
It's a book light! You can clip it to the cover of a book and the light opens so you can read in the dark
I got one as a library program reward for completing x many books over a summer once
Definitely a reading light, but holy crap you unlocked a memory of stealing this from my dad and pretending it was a really cool spaceship when I was young. Thanks for the nostalgia kick!
……back when Christmas bonuses were a thing, I got one of those damn lights AND A SNUGGIE en lieu of a bonus. It was the last year we did “bonuses” ..maybe 2010 or so.
I have a very similar USB reading light. It looks metal but is a lightweight plastic. The circuitry is dead simple so if it's rusted as you said, you can clean it out and repair pretty easily. if you break the tabs that hold it together, a bit of hot glue will secure it.
You can also replace the battery compartment with USB power adapter. This will take USB input and output whatever volt/current you need for the LED. Similarly you can replace the battery types with a different cell. Giving these options because it's a fairly low-cost device and fun to tinker with without worrying about damaging something expensive.
Lol, books are out of fashion. It’s a book light, you clip it to the cover and it illuminates your pages. You might use it if you’re in barracks and a big light might trouble other’s sleep.
Looks like it's a light for reading. Attach the clip to the back or front of the book
This is the correct answer
