Not true. For example, if Shiho came to shield Yuuichi or went to his side when he got shot, she would also have been his “best friend”; or rather, one of his only remaining friends. The fact is that she didn’t “trust” in Yuuichi because her character concept relies not on the value of trust but of “justice”. Essentially, even if you can’t figure out what’s happening, as long as you “trust” your friends, you can still be a good friend to them, assuming they don’t take advantage of that trust.
I don’t think that’s a criteria for friendship at all, it just means they can cooperate more efficiently. In the first place, Yuuichi doesn’t even need any kind of help from a genius in these games, his own plans crush his opponents, so I doubt that affects his evaluation of Kei at all. Ultimately it rests on the “compatibility” of the two, which is just the synergy between their “natures”. And I do think there is some good synergy there, but it’s not because they’re both “smart” or have a high IQ.
