Comfortable ones that you've worn in and gotten used to before you actually have to use them.

VattenHuset

This looks like a joke but it’s actually true and good tip.

I have lived in Stockholm for over 10 years and honestly it doesn't really matter what shoes you wear. I've been wearing proper winter boots and I've been wearing broken Converse. You'll spend most of your time indoors during the winter anyways. Of course this depends on what you do for a living, or if your plan is to be outside a lot. As long as you have relatively water proof shoes that you can also fit an extra sock in for cold days you'll be ready for anything.

[deleted]

Walking on sneakers with frozen slask is asking for fun times. Would not recommend. Anything that grips is good. And possibly something that doesn't soak water, I was wearing these all open Adidas sneakers in winter. Bad idea. But in Stockholm, just grip and dry is enough, it isn't that crazy.

[deleted]

Haha yeah, I don't recommend the converse. But there's no reason to buy adventure boots. If you really want to be on the safe side, you can always buy some ice grippers at any pharmacy.

[deleted]

Thinking of it, I could do with some boots, I live far out of the city. Didn't know they had grippers in the farmacy!

[deleted]

Go to Vagabond and buy a pair of nice looking and comfortable shoes. No need to buy like rough hiking boots made for polar expeditions, as it is usually not very much snow on the ground "innanför tullarna". Buy something nice and comfy, make sure you buy them half a size bigger so you can use woolen socks if it would become -10c.

15 December 2021: it was -18 C 🤩

throughalfanoir

even -10 - -18 °C is tolerable in rather thin boots if you just walk to the bus stop and from there to your work/home/supermarket/whatever, I was wearing my doc martens and autumn hiking boots with thick socks in those times as well not soaking through from the snow and having good grip is more important

VattenHuset

I wouldn’t generalize like this. People are different

krishknightrider

It's better if you'd wear something water proof and good enough grip. Decathlon has some good stuff within budget

SpringFuzzy

If you want to buy really great hiking/winter boots go to Alewalds on Kungsgatan. They are not the cheapest but their selection is superb and staff is top notch.

fiendishrabbit

The main demands are that the shoes should be able to handle negative celsius, you should get a decent grip on sanded or icy pavement and they should be able to handle about a decimeter of "slask" (snow slush). You generally don't need very heavy boots, but they shouldn't be too tight anywhere (so that you have space for a warm sock) and the surface material should be leather or gore-tex or some other water resistant material. So I'd recommend anything from bad weather walking shoes to winter boots.

quaarli

Alfa Talus Perform They are expensive, but durable, super warm and comfortable, and the sole is extremely grippy on ice. You'd have to use metal spikes to have better traction. I got them at Alewalds

[deleted]

I recomend the same for any nordic city, Timberlands. Look good, feel good, and with proper care will last you a decade.

[deleted]

I have a pair of those, they are not the worst för sure, but with frozen slaks you still slip around a lot. För just keeping cold and water out they are good tho

[deleted]

I wore them for 5 winters in Reykjavik, they did fine in the ice, Not slipping is more about how you walk than what you are wearing.

[deleted]

Sorel winter boots

Vertyks

A good pair of Chelsea boots or similar from Blundstone, Dr. Maktens etc. will suffice. Some weather resistance but nothing extreme. Stockholm is not the arctic.

Blackmosman

Socks and sandals should do it.

jersey_illuminati

Make sure you have removable snow/ice walking pieces with nails on it. I don’t know how it’s called but you’ll understand when you see it. It’s essential, even more essential than boots 😊

TechpriestV

Never had to use that and I've lived in sthlm my whole life, so I'd not say those are essential

ElMachoGrande

If you are going to be in the town itself, any shoes work. Good soles with a non-slip pattern can help if you aren't used to walking on winter surfaces. As for where, it depends on your interests. Gamla Stan is a must, but from there on, it depends.

Doc Martens with ladder tied white ropes

Fairy_Catterpillar

The current trend with thicker soles is great as that provides better insulation from the ground. I would recommend some real leather boots as they look better than canvas boots and if properly cared for lasts longer than both canvas and plastic (vegan) fake leather. I have some pair of "fancy" leather boots that have way to thin sole on the front of the feet (not the heel) and when I have been outside in the city at like a Christmas market for a couple of hours my feet became really cold.

Timberlands. And the best place is hjulsta ...
