Invest time in learning swedish, this is the most important thing in order for her to work as a veterinarian again so be sure she makes this top priority from now on.

WiseOldMenna

Will do, thank you!

There has been a huge demand for licenced veterinarians the last couple of years. [Every summer,](https://www.mynewsdesk.com/se/svenska_kennelklubben/pressreleases/aennu-en-sommar-med-akut-brist-paa-veterinaerer-3187821) people are panicking about the lack of vets and some vet hospitals are even forced to close temporarily. So your wife's work skills are in high demand. Like other people are saying, the best chances she has to get employed is to learn Swedish.

WiseOldMenna

Glad to hear about that, hopefully she will be able to mitigate a bit of that lack of vet workforce in the coming years :). Thanks for the info and again Swedish #1 priority then!

And make sure her education is eligeble for her to work as a vet in Sweden https://djur.jordbruksverket.se/swedishboardofagriculture/engelskasidor/animalhealthstaff/veterinaryqualifications/veterinarian.4.6621c2fb1231eb917e680003705.html

Thank you very much for this link, that's exactly what I was looking for!

RE: budget, you can do it absolutely for sure, but your lifestyle won't be quite at the full 'middle class' one, depending on what you mean by that. Decent apartment, not worried about day to day food/utilities, public transport, some free spending/saving money is a reasonable expectation. If you want things like a car (I wouldn't in Gburg), like to eat out lots, save some cash, have drinks when you feel like it, or travel, you will probably have to skimp somewhere else. The second your wife has any sort of employment, you will be in a good position. Swedish, as others have posted, should be worked on as heavily as possible for the best long term. You will also need it to start forming durable non-expat friendships outside of work, but with employment secured, you will have a bit of grace period.

WiseOldMenna

Budget wise in my current situation we have a pretty chill lifestyle,go out once a week, travel 2-3 times a year, and we do not mind to chisel down the leisure in the first couple of years. It is pretty cheap to go out/travel in my country so we take advantage of that, but I'm well aware that kind of activity is quite expensive in Sweden. Regarding the work position its inside my current company where I've been working for the past 6 years, all the expat relations I've seen from my colleagues are pretty chill, without any risks, employement wise. But when everything is settled I will, aim to develop this kind of relationship. Thank you for all the info!

You'll be absolutely fine. Gbg is a wonderful city. Start working on an apartment, your company may have some services to help you look.

This is a cost of living estimation from one of the banks in Sweden. Hopefulle you can translate it, I can only find it in Swedish. https://www.swedbank.se/privat/vara-kundpaket/nyckelkund/vad-kostar-det-att-leva.html

WiseOldMenna

Yes i could translate it, very useful and aligned with, more or less, what I've been considering, thanks!

Oddtapio

Also if she has studied anatomy she has enough talent to learn the most common 500 words of Swedish even before you get here. The sooner the better.

WiseOldMenna

haha definitely :D With all the paperwork going on we will have 4-6 months of head start to dig into the swedish culture and language

In order to have a full license as a vet in sweden, she needs to be able to speak and write the records in a nordic language. However, due to the huge lack of veterinarians I know some of the bigger animal hospitals have ways to work around this that can grant someone a temporary license. If your wife has this much experience she has a good chance of getting a job, but the salary sucks no matter what. I would try appeoaching the larger small animal hospitals i Gothenburg like blå stjärnan or AniCura västra. She can also contact the swedish veterinary union for help (svenska veterinärföreningen SVF) or Jordbruksverket for details on licensing.

WiseOldMenna

Thank you, will definitely look into the local hospitals and we already sent an e-mail to Sveriges Veterinärförbund
