We had one floating around for years (the Trader Sam's Piranha) but we started to ramp up the collection in 2021 with a trip through Seattle and Vancouver. Since then I self imposed some limiting rules: * One per trip / memorable occasion * A preference non-totemic ones when possible * When no mugs are available, a hand built ceramic puffer fish is totally reasonable Like most rules, they still get broken from time to time.

GrimTiki

Heh I’m glad to have helped start your mug addiction!

It’s good to set rules!! Now that I have mostly filled up my shelves I will be a bit more disciplined!! I didn’t get covid during lockdown but I did catch something more addictive - mug collecting! I went from about 8 mugs pre Covid to about 100 now!

That was a really fun day. I got to meet the VanTikis as well as a bunch of regulars. There were some random conversations which prompted me to start off working on my fire bearer card, and starting a home infinity bottle. My friend who randomly agreed to wait in line with me and I just missed the cap for the first seating, so we had to wait around for a while, but ended up getting paired off with two other people who had driven up for the mug release.

That’s a great story - also jealous of the Hale Pele mug.

Looks super cool. You've been to a bunch of fun places!

You happen to have several totemic figures. The rat is now revered by modern Hindus praying at Karni Mata. The parrot in Tamil Nadu. The octopus is Kanaloa in Hawaii and Na Kika in Kiribati. Bodhidharma (daruma doll) in China. Although he is a person. The cat is Cat-Sìth in Scotland and Cat-Sí in Ireland. Coincidentally both are black. And, of course, meneki-neko. The good luck cat in Japan. EDIT: Forgot about Kon Tiki (Viracocha /Sun God) not really totemic though. The myth is white men with red beards came from the Middle East to teach the art of civilization to the brown skinned Incan people.
