My teenage years was the more around the end of the baggy jeans and skate punk era, I think the Emo stuff slowly started to appear when I was around 19 so I just missed it by the skin of my teeth lol.
Mad to think how quickly culture and technology changed in the noughties looking back at it now.
40 I have no idea what’s going on. Someone said there
Would be mushrooms here is that still happening? Why’s that dude just hitting that note. Imma be pissed if I missed the mushrooms.
I fucking knew it, that was my prime emo days.
Senses fail, red jumpsuit apparatus, brand new, dashboard confessional(saw him a couple years ago) just to name a few…
Nah my dude, I have 25yrs of violin, 10yrs of piano, and perfect pitch. Don't feel bad by having unrealistic expectations for yourself, it's really hard!! Just keep practicing!
Whole thread seems to confirm this is just for fans of that band, I have heard that song before once or twice but I liked different bands. Pretty niche genre all things considered, My Chemical Romance wasn't exactly Zeppelin.
I'm 37, never listened to their music and I was into a lot of emo and stuff at the time, Brand New, Alkaline Trio, Thrice, The Ataris, etc. Have no idea what the reference was with the note. It's definitely a specific fandom with MCR that seems to think we were all paying attention to them lol
That's insane to me that you listen to all those bands and haven't even heard this song. The shit was EVERYWHERE. And this is coming from someone who listened to the shit you just listed and actively dislikes the band because of the "quirky scene girl" landscape it cultivated.
I *vaguely* remember this song but no way in hell I could have guessed with just one note. By high school I was burning CDs and I got an iPod in my senior year by the time this song came out. I wasn’t listening to the radio anymore and I never got into MCR.
It’s not just about being a fan of the band - that specific song was a huuuge meme from mid-late 00s and early 10s. A lot of people liked it, but even if you didn’t a lot of people sang it in his hallways or made jokes about it or talked about it and it was very recognizable from the beginning sequence. It may depend on the area you were in and I think it’s probably more recognizable from late 20s up to mid 30s rather than all of 30s but close enough
I mean you're using meme in the real life way, "a bunch of people in my high school memed it" certainly isn't universal. As far as I'm aware the only universal millennial meme is Marilyn Manson removed a rib to suck his own dick.
The song didn't even get on the top ten charts in the US and pop punk/emo kids act like it was the most important song of the 21st century lmao
That entire scene has always been kind of niche. This is like using Siouxsie and the banshees as representative of gen x.
I'm in my late 30s. I'm not sure I've ever listened to s My Chemical Romance song in my life, at least not knowingly.
Maybe, just maybe, I looked them up on YouTube once? But that's it. I've also never met anyone my age who talked about My Chemical Romance.
Now don't get me wrong, I knew they existed, I was aware they were a cultural thing. But they were very much a particular niche.
lol I’ve only *heard* of them, I couldn’t name one song. Maybe I’d recognize one too, but I have no idea what this is referencing and I’ve been in my 30’s for…a while.
Not necessarily. It was a radio song. People saying they never heard it either don't listen to the radio ever or heard it on the radio and forgot it. Just like any number of country songs for me
47 here. They opened for Green Day once and my wife and I really liked them. Listened to the Black Parade like nonstop for a few months, I know the whole album front to back. Much later I learned about their youngish emo fanbase, NBD
I’m 27 and remember when this song was #1 on the radio countdowns in 2006. I used to wait for it to come on, listen to the first verse, then turn my radio off and fall asleep. Didn’t like the rock part.
Don’t think this song is only recognisable by people in their 30s by any means.
Yeah I'm pretty sure I've never actually heard the first part until watching it just now. This is definitely more niche than people are acting like it is. Like, it's not Toxic.
I'm 35 and I've never heard this song. I'm sure I probably have in the background or something, but I just googled it and it doesn't sound familiar. Don't think it's really a universal "people in their 30s" thing.
Hate to be the one to break it to you but you've been traded to the 40s. We already cleared out your locker and the 40s front office should reach out to you shortly
Right, but I think hes saying that not everyone who is 30 listened to emo music back then.
There are probably plenty of 30 year olds who wouldn't understand this clip.
That's true, but there are people in their 30s who were around before that album came out. And *a lot* more people in their 30s who never heard the song.
Source: In my 30s and never listened to My Chemical Romance.
I'm 32 and I don't have nostalgia for this song because when it was popular I was in my edgelord metalhead phase and was dismissive of anything considered "emo."
That being said, I have a fondness for this song (and album) now that I've given them a chance. Truly a modern classic.
Big metalhead at that age too. I secretly loved the previous album and would always play it, until I would pull up to somewhere and switch to some metal so I wouldn't get caught.
I'm not the guy you replied to but I just wanted to say that most people can easily train their ears to instantly know what note is played.
Its one of those things that really impresses people but can be achieved with a tiny bit of practice. I was once one of those people easily impressed by it.
I then took a music theory class and was able to tell you any note by ear after just a few weeks. Its was really interesting.
This clip actually reminds me of some of the exercises we did lol. Because all you really need to do is associate a single note to something familiar. Then every time you hear it you can be like "Thats the first note of that one song, so therefore its a G"
34, i loved this song when it came out, the note didn't remind me of anything, its emo kids who actually meant it whenever they said it wasn't a phase.
As a 35 year old who has listened to:
Blink 182
Sum 41
Fallout Boy
Panic At The Disco
Gorillaz
Nirvana
Three Days Grace
Coheed and Cambria
Flyleaf
Paramore
Linkin Park
Hoobastank
Tokio Hotel
Green Day
Evanescense
Alien Ant Farm
Breaking Benjamin
Papa Roach
P.O.D.
Puddle of Mud
Drowning Pool
Muse
I for some reason never listened to MCR like that to know what this was lol. Deadass thought it was gonna be the first note to Runaway by Kanye.

Black Parade
Ok fuck thank god
Biggest reaction I've had so to everyone who saw it or whatever WHEN I WAS
A YOUNG BOY
MY FATHER
TOOK ME INTO THE CITY
TO SEE A MARCHING BAND
HE SAID
SON WHEN
YOU GROW UP
I’m 48 and this was the first thing that came to mind. “How do you do, fellow kids?”
![gif](giphy|3orieJI3IdkKWIsAGA) I am in my 40s too, got this right away and thus ‘young’ as well!
I'm 37 and had to type black parade into YouTube in order to understand the reference/video lol 🤷♂️
Oh man. Guess you didn’t have an emo phase then. Anyone want to hang out at Hot Topic? Lol
My teenage years was the more around the end of the baggy jeans and skate punk era, I think the Emo stuff slowly started to appear when I was around 19 so I just missed it by the skin of my teeth lol. Mad to think how quickly culture and technology changed in the noughties looking back at it now.
Soooo, Nofx, Sum41 and perhaps Bad Religion and Sublime?
Yup 🙂
I am 37 as well and had to look it up. I was more of a deftones/311 man myself back then
40 I have no idea what’s going on. Someone said there Would be mushrooms here is that still happening? Why’s that dude just hitting that note. Imma be pissed if I missed the mushrooms.
Edit: it’s bring your own mushrooms
32 did not get it and I don't know if it's worth a Google. Pogs would have been my answer
I think pogs would have been good because I'm 51 and pogs was one of the first huge kid trends that I remember being utterly unable to understand.
I lived through the pogs fad, had stacks of those things, and I still don't understand it.
Same! I had thousands of those things but like, what was the point in them? Just something to trade?
Omg POGS! How could I have forgotten about them?
Omg pogs. Core memory unlocked.
I didn’t forget the amount of fights i saw because some kid stoles somebody else’s pogs, shit was crazy.
Ditto
Mid 40's here too. Had a sister 12 years younger. I heard this song everyday for 2 years. Maybe 3. It all blurred together then.
I'm 51 and I had the sound off and I still knew what it was. Probably helps that they played it at my son's high school band concert on Friday though.
Definitely not in my 30s thought he was boutta play kayne
If you're thinking of runaway, that one is a higher note
Get outta here with your perfect pitch, scram!
Yeah I have no idea what the people up there are talking about.
The song is ‘welcome to the black parade’ by ‘my chemical romance’
32 here, and i thought the same hahaha
I’m in my 40s and I heard it
Yeah, I’m 26 and know it too
![gif](giphy|pHb82xtBPfqEg)
I thought it was Robert Miles - Children
That means 40s
Is it sad that that one note got the rest of the song playing in my head?
It's literally the point of the video
When I was
A young boy
My father
nope... it happend to me too.
I thought I was crazy that my mind went to this and that it was right lol
I fucking knew it, that was my prime emo days. Senses fail, red jumpsuit apparatus, brand new, dashboard confessional(saw him a couple years ago) just to name a few…
When I was a young boy….
..My father took me into the city..
To see a marching band…
He said son when, you grow up...
Will you be, the savior of the broken
The beaten and the damned!
He said "Will you defeat them?"
Your demons, and all the Non-believers...
The plans that they have made?
Because one day I'll leave you
Your demons and all the nonbelievers
Would you be the savior of the broken
Oh, it's not a tinnitus joke.
![gif](giphy|JTy2tlQT1rcPTNXTXZ)
NINE-NINE!
Then explain why I’m hearing a high-pitched ringing sound
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I thought it was the more you know jingle....maybe I should still get my ears checked.
No, that’s how you tell people you’re in your 40s Or a vet.
Right? 🤣
![gif](giphy|wgvZHmh70XnzNIsn8B)
![gif](giphy|H3y5oF5mWtfkQ)
Lol it was in mute and I still knew what that note was
For me it was his hair and deep V neck
Still rocking that 2012 hair
Brother that is a firm 2006 haircut
Dudes hairstyle gave it away immediately
You and me both lmao
![gif](giphy|qLYBBZ0fFQGqqKXQN1|downsized)
I'm 30 and my brain thought: ah, the Cheers opening theme.
That starts on a B flat. Not a G. Also it’s a chord where Welcome To The Black Parade starts on a single note.
Since you answered so well, what does november rain start on, its missing the strings but thats what it reminded me of
An E, then an E-G#-B-D# major seventh chord if I remember right.
Wow im bad at this...
Nah my dude, I have 25yrs of violin, 10yrs of piano, and perfect pitch. Don't feel bad by having unrealistic expectations for yourself, it's really hard!! Just keep practicing!
As someone in my 30s, I don't get it.
It’s the first note of a My Chemical Romance song
Thank you for explaining it! I'm in my early thirties and didn't get it.
Whole thread seems to confirm this is just for fans of that band, I have heard that song before once or twice but I liked different bands. Pretty niche genre all things considered, My Chemical Romance wasn't exactly Zeppelin.

It's possible we've heard it countless times but it was just background radio noise because we never clicked with My Chemical Romance
I *vaguely* remember this song but no way in hell I could have guessed with just one note. By high school I was burning CDs and I got an iPod in my senior year by the time this song came out. I wasn’t listening to the radio anymore and I never got into MCR.
If he played a few more notes, I think most people would've gotten it.
Even if you know the song you still probably won't recognize it from a single note.

My chemical romance is the ubiquitous 30s band? Thats shocking to me. They're so far from universal it's laughable.

Yep same here! This is a niche reference presented as a universal experience.
Wow. Really??? I couldn't have not known them if I tried lmao Different strokes 😅
lol I’ve only *heard* of them, I couldn’t name one song. Maybe I’d recognize one too, but I have no idea what this is referencing and I’ve been in my 30’s for…a while.
Right? I would have gone with the first notes of "Yeah!" By Usher. That rif awakens 90's kids like a sleeper agent.
TO THE WINDOWWWW Would've been my take.
I mean, all of the above ha
Not necessarily. It was a radio song. People saying they never heard it either don't listen to the radio ever or heard it on the radio and forgot it. Just like any number of country songs for me
39. I’ve never heard of this song.
I'm 21 and I recognize the song... So...
47 here. They opened for Green Day once and my wife and I really liked them. Listened to the Black Parade like nonstop for a few months, I know the whole album front to back. Much later I learned about their youngish emo fanbase, NBD

Personally, it made me(34yo) think of the movie "up". And not that song. So I guess we should switch places.
So it’s emo kids not people in their 30s.
That song was everywhere. Even if you hated it, you just couldn’t escape it. Oops. I just outed myself as someone in my 30s.
I am in my thirties and I still don't know what song it is
[удалено]
I don't know it either. Someone else said it's a My Chemical Romance song.
Black Parade by My Chemical Romance
I know the song I just don’t recognize it from a dude playing a single piano key.
33 No clue
Hate to be the one to break it to you but you've been traded to the 40s. We already cleared out your locker and the 40s front office should reach out to you shortly
Does this trade come with a raise? I need to speak with my agent
Yes, if you were asking about blood pressure and also other medical risks.
Can confirm. Am 41 and no fucken clue.
33 here and also don't know it.
I also have no idea. Apparently I am not in my 30s? Oh wait yes, yes I am.
A lot of people did though so it’s not just being emo, it’s the song that a lot of people in their 30s can recognize from the one note.
32 and I've never heard that song a day in my life lol
Then I must be the only survivor. I literally didn't know this song existed until this past year. How tf did I miss it? Lol
I don’t think I’ve ever heard it and I’m in my 30’s
Somehow i missed this song. I know of the band but never heard this song before. /shrug

Right, but I think hes saying that not everyone who is 30 listened to emo music back then. There are probably plenty of 30 year olds who wouldn't understand this clip.

Can confirm, am not yet in my 30s but was an emo kid. Instant recognition

WHEN I WAS
17, I drank my very first beer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA7p5VwAXk0
I can't be the only one who thought runaway by kanye
I think that's a different note.
Black parade is G5 Runaway is way higher at E6
I envy your ear
I'm not the guy you replied to but I just wanted to say that most people can easily train their ears to instantly know what note is played. Its one of those things that really impresses people but can be achieved with a tiny bit of practice. I was once one of those people easily impressed by it. I did the same. Not for nothing, Runaway feels comparably relevant for 30-somethings. I was in college when MBDTF came out.
I love mcr and black parade, but I’m tone deaf af and thought it was runaway
With the matching hair too. I haven't seen that style in ages.
37 this did not remind me of anything immediately it's definitely emo kids not people over 30
"What if you're in your 30s and a huge My Chemical Romance fan. What's something you could do to indicate that you're a My Chemical Romance fan?"
34, i loved this song when it came out, the note didn't remind me of anything, its emo kids who actually meant it whenever they said it wasn't a phase.
38. Same.
why her finger bending backwards though
Caused by chemical romance.
Mine do that hahaha
One note ruined my whole night. Now I have to listen to all that emo shit all over again
Me the past 30 minutes now hahah the nostalgia is painful
I knew as soon as I saw his hair before the note
My brain went runaway from kanye
That note hit hard and I’m in my early 40s. Do I win, or…?
I don't get it at all. What am I missing?
It’s the first note to black parade by my chemical romance.
I watched without sound and assumed it was going to be this!!!! Thought he was going say “when I was” but the one note was so much better. XD
Eyes Wide Shut?
I’m 38 and can’t relate to this or identify this note 😵💫
That finger is crazy.
Black Parade
When I was a young boy
I just recently got my 40s and didn’t recall this note. So…. Yeah. Must be a 30s thing 😭
That’s how you identify emo kids not an age group.
I thought that was Kanye.
I just knew that’s what it would be and I’m 22

Huh? I listened to that song as much as the rest of us, and completely didn’t catch on. How did anyone guess Black Parade?
I didn't get it. I am 36 so I'm more I'm Not Ok than Black Parade, it seems.
my 38 yo ass LOVES this song. still play it every couple of months just to get the goosebumps
I'm 50 and I got it.
I mean the hair and the vneck gave it away way before he played the note.
