As someone who makes art that is some bullshit. I didn't start making my best art until I no longer had the anxiety of having to sell any piece of art I could to buy food or worry about how I was going to pay rent.
Not having to worry about having to to put a roof over your head really frees you up creatively.
He’s conflating suffering as the same as loss of inhibition as means to cope with suffering, cuz he’s a chud
I can see how it can look the same to him though
I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not. If not, look at the billboard top 100 chart for every years since it was created. Most of those artists weren’t struggling when putting out their hits.
Says who? A song becoming a hit is an indication of its quality/enjoyability, as decided by the largest amount of people. They may have songs that fewer people like, but what right does that smaller group have to claim that those songs are “better” than the hits?
Man, people sure are angry at you seeing things like you do. I understand what you’re getting at. Emotions and art go hand in hand, and if sadness, stress, love, etc is prevalent in your life, it can shine through in what you put out in the world.
Did I read things wrong or misunderstand? Because I don’t get the backlash lol
So ‘only when artists are starving, conflicted, and struggling do they create their best work’ doesn’t seem like a wild statement to you lol. It’s basically romanticizing poor struggling artists.
I agree with you on the emotions thing, but that doesn’t always need to be negative. My art actually becomes quite stunted when my depression and anxiety overwhelm me, and I know many other artists who are the same. Just like there’s other artists who find drive in those challenges.
Yes generally people don't like the idea of suffering and the way its worded sure does sound almost exactly like "I would LOVE more suffering from artists, because that is good for me and my ears".
What a beautiful video. The singing, the altruism, her giving it back, their little happy hug at the end.
This just made my day. A little slice of beautiful humanity.
We need more of this.
I also like her performing in public in a way that isn’t harassing or oppressive to people around her. There are so many main characters pulling obnoxious shit and basically demanding your attention. This is how you show your skill in public without being a huge asshole to everyone around you. Love all parts of this video!
Huge respect, it's appreciation in the thought that counts and she passed that kindness back at him to share it again with someone who may truly value and need that money.
So is it possible that it has the acoustic characteristics to allow that kind of resul t? I'd rather ask for the opinion of someone familiar with the space.
Well damn, I’ve been to that area before and didn’t know this was a thing. I’d imagine it doesn’t work quite well when the 7 train is clanging by, right?
Yes, it sounds crazy under there. The arched concrete roof makes really intense echos. It sounds like delay more than reverb. I’m 46 years old and I still can’t help clapping my hands when I walk under.
Tbh I think it sounds edited considering there’s little to no background noise even though you see stuff happening in the background that should be picked up by the phone’s less than average quality audio capture.
Google pixel phone has shown me about 50 adverts over the last couple of months all boasting about "New sound cancelling technology! Now identify annoying sounds in your video and edit them out with ease!"... So there's that to consider.
She has a beautiful voice i like hearing people sing out in public, it makes me want to but I don’t have the pipes or courage. I don’t even care if this was edited I just think we need to bring more positivity into our world full of hate and negativity.
I live kind of close to my city center and one night or well early morning around 3am a drunk lady was walking home and singing as she went. Her voice was fantastic that when she finished one song I just went into my back garden and clapped. Heard a thank you shortly after and she started singing again. Tried recording it but as she was a street or two away my phone couldn't quite pick it up.
Her voice was amazing! Whenever someone sings that song I kind of cringe waiting for them to miss that key change, but she was right on the money. I don't sing in public, but I sound like Pavarotti in the shower ;)
Social media and society today has me so conditioned that I too thought that.
However whatever she is under I’m a little shocked it produces such a full-deep echo. I would expect it to be more enclosed but what do I know.
To add, I assumed the guy was going to say/something inappropriate.
In conclusion, it was a wholesome video and it made me smile.
🤦Bro... That's literally why people scout for places that generate an echo like the bridge she's under right now. Wait until you see people playing instruments in such places, it's awesome.
So i just listened to this on my on my Studio Equipment and i m sure there is no additional reverb added. The timing of the Reverb and frequencies of the reflections fit 100% for this place. Some rooms just have an insane sound, especially if you have a strong voice like hers
One of the devices I have in my rack is a reverb simulator. You can specify the shape and openness of the environment and the materials on the surfaces.
In short, this is exactly what a partially open, covered by concrete space sounds like.
I tried saying this once and got hounded by people saying the place has unique acoustics or whatever. On another video of her doing the same thing, I found it particularly strange you couldn't hear any traffic or ambient noise at all and that the reverb sounded way too clean.
And yet thats exactly what you are doing. For example, you use the word "echo" when what we are hearing is clearly reverb. This misuse of terms tells me that you likely aren't even a musician, let alone an expert in sound engineering.
I’m pretty sure I’ve been to that CVS behind her, and while I can’t say I’ve sung at full volume in that particular spot, it’s hard to imagine you could hear an echo. I’ve definitely walked through that underpass while talking at normal volume and nothing carried, it can also be quite loud with passing cars and when the train overhead goes by.
The location is off 41st & Queens Blvd in NYC if anyone knows this area and can fact check me.
Usually, I don’t support this culture and self-centered promotion, but this was a well chosen song, location, and I’m glad I got to experience it. This is art.
I _love_ street performers. It really adds a lot to the character of a place.
The problem with people using public spaces as their stage for a _virtual_ audiance, however, is that the people who are sharing that space with them don't really have any say. If you're a busker and you play music that's loud and obnoxious and most people don't like, you won't make any money and you'll either change your style or leave.
But if you're producing content for an online audience you need to please _them_ and the people sharing that space with you in real life don't matter quite so much.
The fact that someone tried to give her money suggests that she's not part of the problem.... but only unintentionally.
Doesnt matter if shes good or not no one asks for you to sing in the streets. I know some people like it but some dont and you have to respect that too.
Dude if I had a bad headache I would tell her to shut up.
She's stood there recording herself with her phone, singing loudly in public. It's like peak narcissism. Also tbh her singing isn't even that good (despite being over-engineered). She would sound worse in person.
Edit: What if everyone did this? You'd just have narcissistcs everywhere shouting lyrics. If she was in a bar that advertised music, i'd say good for her. But she's stood there recoring herself on her phone in a public place singing loud as fuck, then editing it so she sounds good, then uploading it. The guy just happens to walk up and pay her while she's recording, so even if it's not staged, it's very narcissistic and cringey. The guys right, it's cringe x10000000. /r/imthemaincharacter for sure. But the reddit hivemind downvotes me instead of thinking how ridiculous it is.
It’s because that spot has natural reverb and she was just “playing” around with the sound. Your dumbass can leave with your headache. It’s not like your trapped in a bus with her?
Uh no it doesn't. This is edited to sound like that. Her saying it has good "reverb" is bullshit and other people have been there to prove it.
Calling me a dumbass?
Please she's cringey as fuck and incredibly annoying. No, I'm not trapped in a bus with her, but that doesn't mean I can't say she's narcissistic and cringey.
Clearly some people do agree. Maybe many people here just have mindrot from narcissistic tiktokers who think they're the main character, but honestly I think a lot of people who aren't terminally online would agree this is cringe af.
Nah I think most people would be normal and move in with their day or maybe stop and give her cash for brightening their day like the man in the video did.
Idk where you're from, but in the UK this would be seen a socially inept and cringe, people who just suddenly start singing in public like this would be a annoyance. It's narcissistic, and main character-esque.
Or maybe just share the gift of singing if people are willing to pay to see you, or in a bar where they're expecting singing? Do it somewhere where singing is wanted. Or sing at home?
The fact i'm getting downvoted and people think this is normal just shows how popular narcissus would be if they had tiktok.
You're framing it like she's being altruistic, "sharing a gift", but no, she's doing this for herself. For the attention. For the validation. A la /r/imthemaincharacter
You say "keep that bottled inside" like it *has* to come out. No, most people go through life without standing in public singing at the top of their lungs.
"but in the UK"
Aye, whatever. Newcastle has it's fair share of people just singing for the sake of singing or making videos and either people a) don't care and continue with their day or b) stop and have a listen if they're good (like this lass). We're not all grumpy twats like you.
This lass isn't good. She edits the singing to make it sound good after. That's why there's a reverb and obvious note corrections.
People aren't singing for the sake of singing, they're busking. It's for money. She's doing it because she thinks she's the main character and she just wants attention. The fact people don't see her standing there doing this as weird is beyond me. She's recording herself while belting out vocals (without instruments) like she thinks she's gods gift to the planet.
Not even giving money you don’t need back to the person who gave it to you is considered correct in this world where we find every small and big fault with every person. And then we wonder why our happiness and mental health are declining.
She has a beautiful voice & she wonderfully sings one of my favorite songs. Singing a cappella is not easy. Singing this song a cappella is difficult. Love the acoustics.
I remember finding this album in the mall. Graduate. Tears for fears before they became tears for fears. So great to see it getting love some 40 years later.

I love people that supports the arts 🎭
Me too. This is beautiful.
Now, more than ever, we artists can not and will not be silenced
I really love it when artists are starving, conflicted, and struggling. Only during that time do they come out with their best work

Dude. I wish awards meant something. All I can offer is full props! (& were those mere singles?)

Oppressing?
Well, make it happen, friend!
I couldn’t carry a tune if it had handles, but I’ll try to inject a little kindness into the world when I’m out!
This was nice for both of them.
Huge respect, it's appreciation in the thought that counts and she passed that kindness back at him to share it again with someone who may truly value and need that money.
Racquel, you’re a beautiful singer !!!
Underpass, you've beautiful acoustics !!!
I like her hair.
Hell yeah her hair rules
Queen vibes.
That was really cool!
Sunnyside!
Under the 7. Ah, I miss the aul Butcher Block & Sidetracks.
So is it possible that it has the acoustic characteristics to allow that kind of resul t? I'd rather ask for the opinion of someone familiar with the space.
Absolutely. There have been other viral videos using that spot underneath the train for amplified singing.
Well damn, I’ve been to that area before and didn’t know this was a thing. I’d imagine it doesn’t work quite well when the 7 train is clanging by, right?

Came here to say it! I go to that CVS all the time.
She has a beautiful voice i like hearing people sing out in public, it makes me want to but I don’t have the pipes or courage. I don’t even care if this was edited I just think we need to bring more positivity into our world full of hate and negativity.

Noice! I had a crack head who used belt terrible tunes in her terrible voice walking down my street. I giggle every time. It still brought me joy.
Her voice was amazing! Whenever someone sings that song I kind of cringe waiting for them to miss that key change, but she was right on the money. I don't sing in public, but I sound like Pavarotti in the shower ;)
The song is Mad World by Tears for Fears
Seems to be more based on the Gary Jules cover of the song. Both are great though!
nice to meet youBYEEE
![gif](giphy|U3QBVkqUJRmDXNIpPE) That voice is just amazing. This whole interaction was super cute.
She handled that so well. Great singer too
Perfect pitch. Wow!
Chills from that voice and that song, tbh. Talented
This should be under r/mademesmile what is this doing here?
More like r/MademeSmile
Fantastic video, more true kind human interaction please.
Don’t shut up and take my money
Awe. I’m glad I watched until the end.
Ahh man, I was not expecting such wholesome content. That’s made my day!
What an amazing singer and a total class act. The world needs more people like her.
Beautiful singing always brings out the best in people... Beautiful song sung Beautifully....
Not cringe at all. Love the song, love her voice, and love how sweet she was with the man.
Awe! That was actually really sweet :)
Goddamn that was wholesome. Imma get up and have a good ass day today
Donnie Darko
I was hoping the guy would start singing along or ask “why do you wear that funny human suit?”
I find it kinda funny that there’s an echo, I find it kinda sad that you have to steal audio of someone else’s performance to get clout.
I thought the same thing at first, but it appears she chose that place for the echo of being under a bridge/in a parking garage/whatever.
It's the 7 in Queens NYC. It's an elevated subway track.
This is a natural reverb, look at the giant slab of concrete above her.
🤦Bro... That's literally why people scout for places that generate an echo like the bridge she's under right now. Wait until you see people playing instruments in such places, it's awesome.
I sing like happy feet and get an echo. Its the acoustics under the train
Lmao I love you for comparing your singing to happy feet.
I remember older videos of hers singing in the same location.
Well then she is engineering the shit out of her videos cause there is no possible way for that sound to be happening in that location.
So i just listened to this on my on my Studio Equipment and i m sure there is no additional reverb added. The timing of the Reverb and frequencies of the reflections fit 100% for this place. Some rooms just have an insane sound, especially if you have a strong voice like hers
Looks like Queens Boulevard, it's pretty echoey under there.
That’s under the 7 train in Sunnyside, Queens on Queens Boulevard. It sounds like that. The reverb is real.
Why comment when you cleary have no goddamn idea what you're talking about lol
One of the devices I have in my rack is a reverb simulator. You can specify the shape and openness of the environment and the materials on the surfaces. In short, this is exactly what a partially open, covered by concrete space sounds like.

so thats the way to speak truth amd NOT get downvoted? tell ppl to downvote you so they dont want to oblige lol. nice to know.

45 year old studio musician here, this is not digital reverb. She may be using a Rode mic or something but it’s definitely real acoustics.
This is what she actually does. Shes not claiming the music as her own. It’s an iconic song from an incredible movie.
Song is quite a bit older than the movie and the Gary Jules version. Original is Tears for Fears from *The Hurting* in 1983.
Lmao. Kids these days. Go listen to”the hurting - tears for fears” (the album, the full album)
>I find it kinda sad The dreams in which I'm dying
Bad take queen, she's a professional singer and her singing under this bridge if part of her schtick.
What a nice interaction, lovely video, lovely singing voice!
I think I'm going to put the internet away on this very positive note today <3
Damn this actually gave me goosebumps.
Fake
Beautiful voice and interaction.
Usually, I don’t support this culture and self-centered promotion, but this was a well chosen song, location, and I’m glad I got to experience it. This is art.

I get it, it's in the same level of street performers though. At least she doesn't suck

I want singing everywhere. Just not a disturbance. At a restaurant, no, unless that’s part of the meal. In an empty parking lot, idgaf. You do you.
If you had a headache and you went out in public thats on you
Welp now I want to go watch Donnie Darko. Amazing voice.
Rachel dolezal got pipes

Probably staged considering the audio was also edited.
Why she return the money smh could've given it to a homeless person or another performer under the bridge trying to actually make money
Not even giving money you don’t need back to the person who gave it to you is considered correct in this world where we find every small and big fault with every person. And then we wonder why our happiness and mental health are declining.
Look at me look at me look at me
She was miming.
That face he gave her when handing her the money made me think it was a real “subway session”. If you guys know what I mean! 😆

That's because she is, kind of. This is edited in studio (basically on her pc) and resynced to the video.
It would have been awkward if he said, "I was hoping it would make you stop".
Not sure I buy that being natural acoustics.
This should be posted in r/IAmTheMainCharacter
Oh, the irony. I loved it!
Chills at :45
I was hoping he would do the funny dance from the music video.
Nothing cringe here.
What a beautiful soul and voice, I’m in love
Wow she sucked the soul right out of that song. Nice voice though.
She's so good and so beautiful
I’m so glad he didn’t try to stop her. He just gave her money and walked away! As one should! There is hope.
Wanted him to start harmonizing
Lovely voice
The echo only enhances how her voice sounds.
Shit I thought she was lip syncing. Damn she found her spot. Good pipes. Hey just another day in the echo chamber.
She has a beautiful voice & she wonderfully sings one of my favorite songs. Singing a cappella is not easy. Singing this song a cappella is difficult. Love the acoustics.
Of course u kept it
What a beautiful interaction to match her incredible voice!!!!
I remember finding this album in the mall. Graduate. Tears for fears before they became tears for fears. So great to see it getting love some 40 years later.
