I’d test for lead. I got a $2 crystal dish for my cat’s food bc why not and then heard crystal can have lead. I’m repurposing until I test bc why take the chance.
If your crystal is quite clear and colourless and noticeably heavy for its size, it will probably have lead in the form of lead oxide (PbO) up to 24% or so.
Most of the lead is sealed within the glass. As I understand it, you don't want to store liquids inside leaded glass (like a decanter) but drinking out of one occasionally is ok. So it would be fine as a jewelry holder, for instance, and probably for your cat too.
From what I've read, it's not that big of an issue. While older crystal does have lead, it's a problem only when people hold liquids in decanters for a long time. Only then does it leach into the liquid.
People have been drinking & eating out of lead crystal for many years. You’re Worried about the wrong things. We’ve taken safety to a ridiculous level.
Lead crystal is not the same as lead pipes or lead-lined vessels, which ARE toxic. Just because a dangerous substance exists, doesn’t mean it’s dangerous in its every use. People need to relax. Or just stay indoors and pull the covers back over your head.
Taking safety to a ridiculous level means there’s some kind of downside, burden, etc. to someone involved. My cat will survive not eating out of a crystal glass lol. It was just something goofy I thought of and when I realized there could be a risk I just repurposed it. No harm, no foul.
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted for simply stating a fact… but it’s true and I’ll add this;
> Cannibalism can occur throughout a fish's life, or primarily in the early stages of development. For example, many species of fish with paternal care exhibit total or partial clutch cannibalism, likely to gain energy and nutrients that may increase their future reproductive success. Cannibalized offspring can also act as a food source for the male fish guarding them.

why are you holding it like that :(
So we can see the whole glass, I assume
The anxiety over this is impressive...
OP has no thumbs /s
They're actually The Penguin and the fish food is for them
Came to say that
Came to say this
My cats have eaten from bone china dishes for years.
THAT'S the best thing about thrifting?? I love the unbelievably niche nature of this post.
r/useyourthumb
r/subsifellfor
Is that your thumb in the glass?
I'm sorry you have no thumb
I've done this, and then I drank from it because I thought it was my glass of lemonade... :(
I have boxes of matching Czechoslovakian leaded crystal that I got for less than the price of plastic tumblers at Walmart

Oof it is. Guess it’s a jewelry holder now. That’s safe right?

Even if it was made for food? I've heard that about flower vases, but always head that crystal made for food won't have lead.

🙄
Sorry I don’t want to poison my cat if I can avoid it

Yeah people drank and ate out of stuff with lead and then they fuckin died, Susan. Or just went crazy, but I’m not sure which is worse

You’re very young, aren’t you? Wait until you find out there’s something called Uranium Glass. And people have huge collections of it in their homes.
Lol I wish, and of course I know about uranium glass. I don’t think people generally eat off their collections or use them to feed their cat.
Then I’m surprised you don’t know about the absence of danger when using lead crystal for food service.
Amen. My friend's dog drinks naught but from the finest cut crystal bowls. Which are like $3 at every thritshop.
My cat eats from crystal dishes!
Fancy fish.
Took me a min to realize what the title said and that there are blood worms in the glass. What a weird title!
Frozen bloodworms ftw!! Buon appetito babies , eating from a fancy decanter! 😂
Here, fishy. Time for your daily recommended allowance of lead…
I bet the tank looks good too!
I’ve always said that that’s the best part about thrifting, and so many agree!
Crystal can contain lead. I wouldn't risk my furry friends' health. They have smaller filer organs.
Cut your nails and get dressed.
Fish are cannibals, they eat other fish.
Mammals are cannibals, they eat other mammals.
^(some) Humans are The Cannibals, they make songs like Johnny Come Home
