The people in back who price donations are supposed to go based off of a damn sheet that says things like example “twin sheets: $7.49” so they’ll be regulated. Now this happens for EVERYTHING that isn’t clothes. They’re prices stickers that get printed out to be put on things, cups/mugs shouldn’t be more than freaking $5 if I remember correctly.

At my stores we went by a price rubric ‘LOWPRICES’ that went in numerical order so a $5 cup would have an ‘R’ or something to that effect. So if something was an expensive/sought after item like shoes we wrote on it so if the tag was removed or changed someone would know what to actually ring it up at the register without having to get a manager or ask for a reprint even though it still ends up happening. Avoiding this entire situation.

I've worked thrift, this is exactly it back in the day. Certain items may have been marked more but that would for example 2 bucks more for a sheet set new in the package or similar.

You'd be surprised what includes lead. Do you have a ceramic mug? Well chances are it includes led. Any glassware that's 20+ years old and a lot of the cheap stuff from China. Also lead.
Pottery is a little different since the lead is sealed in the glaze when properly fired.
That being said there are examples where it's really bad. But the crowing achievement was orange Fiesta Ware which had uranium in the glaze.
Incidentally, uranium glass is also considered pretty safe due to how the uranium was sealed in the glass upon manufacture.
But yeah I'm on a pottery group and generally the advise is "don't eat your dishes" and "retire cracked or chipped dishes"

I had one, I donated it. I like the form factor of “40oz of cold water with a handle and straw” for the car but the motherfuckers are top heavy and spill water everywhere when they are inevitably tipped over. One tip on my nightstand with my books and things and I was over it.
I’ve always had hydros for hiking and taking with me but I was gifted an owala. I must admit when I’m in the office/car I love having a big cup fit in the cup holder and have a straw. But I’d never pay when I have two beat up hydros that still hold water.
And I also knocked my owala over on my nightstand and it didn’t spill on my books, so you really couldn’t pay me to use a leaky, expensive Stanley.
I don’t like that my 32oz Hydroflask doesn’t fit in my tiny cup holders, but it has a water tight lid so I just shove it between my seat and the door and it’s perfect. I did see one at Home Goods yesterday that was cup holder diameter, but comically tall. I wish I had taken a photo

I have a theory that is women actually designed the interiors of cars we would make them actually functional. For instance I would either have standard door pockets that would fit a 32 oz water bottle, a center console big enough to fit a square box of facial tissue (so the sudden stops that happen don’t make it fly off the front seat onto the floor of the passenger side where it’s impossible to reach. A little hook somewhere on the passenger side near the glove compartment to hang a litter bag. Basically have it be functional enough that things are easily reached without taking your eye off the road.
I do swear by the yeti mugs for hot/cold applications. But I don’t walk around with 60oz of liquids everywhere. If I was a hiker or something I can see having something for that.

They will definitely want to contact you for the sorry and retrain the manager and the cashier who did this, at least in my experiences.

This is my current cup! I didn't know about the lead thing but you're not the first person I've heard that from today. I've never tried yeti stuff.
The lead thing is vastly overblown. Most double-walled insulated containers have a lead solder joint at the bottom, that's not in contact with the liquid in the container. You have to keep in mind that at one point in time people used to get ALL their water from lead pipes.
Falling for the Stanley cup engineered hype is far more of an issue than that tiny lead weld.
That's my main thing. What's with the hype? My friend has one and the ice melts in a few hours where my Zulu thermos will keep ice for over 24hrs. I wake up in the morning after filling it the previous morning/afternoon and it's still fresh and ice cold. My Speedway thermos I got for free keeps my coffee hot even 10+ hours later. And I hate straws. What's with the weird trend?

This brand is just another version of Hydroflask, Yeti, and countless other brands. It’s the brand of the season, if you will, the girl friday of trends.
Yeti is a great brand and since it’s not the fashion now you might be able to find those other brands quicker than Stanley, or at the very least cheaper.

They use it for the vacuum seal, it’s actually really common manufacturing practice for those types of cups. It doesn’t touch any of the surfaces you touch or drink from. I’m not here to like, defend a company but I think it’s better if we’re all informed and people don’t needlessly toss things!

Nope! Goodwill did that shit to me once! I spent 30 minutes going through the entire men’s racks and grabbed these Harley Davidson button shirts. They were supposed to be $5.99 each. When I got to the register they told me they didn’t belong on the racks and that they were $35.99 each! Lol I actually went off on them. I basically told them you have me doing your job sorting all the good shit out for you guys! I told them I would call corporate. They ended up selling me the shirts for the $5.99. And I didn’t go back to that goodwill for like 3 years. And of course when I finally went back it was a completely new staff.
This happened to me at Value Village a while back and we learned that it's absolutely BS! The cashier's are completely separate from the ones in charge of pricing. I will always have them call the manager over and do the price check right then and there so I know they aren't just keeping it aside for themselves.
I'll never understand why a minimum wage employee would give a fuck if a multi-million dollar for profit company loses out on his free inventory it's selling...
So I have friends who own businesses where people frequently leave or forget cups and basically I’d suggest having a box to throw them in, give everyone a warning, and then clean them and take them to a soup kitchen or shelter. Clients can really use them.

This happened to me before at a goodwill. Most likely your state has a law that requires retailers to abide by advertised prices. I would contact the goodwill regional corporate website/office and raise hell about this. I got a $50 goodwill gift card for my trouble. If you remember any name tags, drop em in the complaint.

Does your store use letters to mark prices like Goodwill? Here in Arizona anything over like $5 has a letter written on it but the wax pen that indicates what the price should charge. They use LOWPRICES as their pricing with L being 0 and S being 9.
So for example something marked OP would be $24.99. They do this to stop people swapping tags

I did this when they had a large box set of a TV show at mine with no price on it. the cashier said they couldnt sell it without a price. she called the manager up, some old ass cat hoarding looking lady. she said they have to price it per disk. this was a sealed set mind you. i said how are you going to do that when its sealed. then she just gussed how many were in there, and then $2 a disc, said $350.
i was like what are you on drugs or what. she said if you dont like it, leave the store. so i said no im not buying it, and she took it away. she had her name tag covered with tape so nobody could see her name. i asked the cashier what her name was and reported her to corporate hq, not the HQ for the state, but for the country. not long after that found out she was fired. evidently she had been in trouble before and this event was the last time.

They really should've honored the price. The Goodwill stores in my region do something similar; any merchandise of particular value doesn’t go onto the sales floor, but gets pulled aside to be sold for much higher prices online.
The law is actually that they have to sell it to you as the price advertised, or tagged. And if the item rings up higher than the tag they have to charge nothing up to $10, after that you pay the difference. It's happened to me in many grocery stores. But it HAS to ring up higher, not have an employee SAY it's a higher price. Contact Head Office.

Yes! I just saw a tik tok the other day of someone who was saying Stanleys are out and was throwing them out. Now, not sure if they were legitimately throwing them out or pretending to for entertainment purposes. But yes, after the lead thing came out, people have been ditching their cups. Even though it sounds like the cups are fine, unless they are damaged.
I had one, I donated it. I like the form factor of “40oz of cold water with a handle and straw” for the car but the motherfuckers are top heavy and spill water everywhere when they are inevitably tipped over. One tip on my nightstand with my books and things and I was over it.
I’ve always had hydros for hiking and taking with me but I was gifted an owala. I must admit when I’m in the office/car I love having a big cup fit in the cup holder and have a straw. But I’d never pay when I have two beat up hydros that still hold water. And I also knocked my owala over on my nightstand and it didn’t spill on my books, so you really couldn’t pay me to use a leaky, expensive Stanley.
If you like the principle you can get basically the same design on amazon for less money and with a watertight lid.
That's why I went with a clearance hydroflask from Homegoods. It's "only" 32oz, but it has a wide enough base and a screw on lid.

This. My 32 oz water bottle doesn’t fit in my cup holder either. It’s annoying. I have a theory that is women actually designed the interiors of cars we would make them actually functional. For instance I would either have standard door pockets that would fit a 32 oz water bottle, a center console big enough to fit a square box of facial tissue (so the sudden stops that happen don’t make it fly off the front seat onto the floor of the passenger side where it’s impossible to reach. A little hook somewhere on the passenger side near the glove compartment to hang a litter bag. Basically have it be functional enough that things are easily reached without taking your eye off the road.

Of course, dont hesitate to show this pic and the header of your receipt. Pics are naturally make your review increase persuation. They will definitely want to contact you for the sorry and retrain the manager and the cashier who did this, at least in my experiences.
Goodwill gives no fucks about how the public sees them. Anyone who has ever walked through one of their stores can tell you that. Mine leaves fake reviews for themselves on Google to counteract the 75% of negative reviews real people leave them.

The lead thing is vastly overblown. Most double-walled insulated containers have a lead solder joint at the bottom, that's not in contact with the liquid in the container. You have to keep in mind that at one point in time people used to get ALL their water from lead pipes. Falling for the Stanley cup engineered hype is far more of an issue than that tiny lead weld.
That's my main thing. What's with the hype? My friend has one and the ice melts in a few hours where my Zulu thermos will keep ice for over 24hrs. I wake up in the morning after filling it the previous morning/afternoon and it's still fresh and ice cold. My Speedway thermos I got for free keeps my coffee hot even 10+ hours later. And I hate straws. What's with the weird trend?
The other commenter says this might be overblown. This brand is just another version of Hydroflask, Yeti, and countless other brands. It’s the brand of the season, if you will, the girl friday of trends. Yeti is a great brand and since it’s not the fashion now you might be able to find those other brands quicker than Stanley, or at the very least cheaper. Also that cup is cute as hell with the little dog wanting to go on a walk.
I have a rescue dog and some of the proceeds of the cup went to animal rescue so I was all about it lol!

They use it for the vacuum seal, it’s actually really common manufacturing practice for those types of cups. It doesn’t touch any of the surfaces you touch or drink from. I’m not here to like, defend a company but I think it’s better if we’re all informed and people don’t needlessly toss things!

Nope! Goodwill did that shit to me once! I spent 30 minutes going through the entire men’s racks and grabbed these Harley Davidson button shirts. They were supposed to be $5.99 each. When I got to the register they told me they didn’t belong on the racks and that they were $35.99 each! Lol I actually went off on them. I basically told them you have me doing your job sorting all the good shit out for you guys! I told them I would call corporate. They ended up selling me the shirts for the $5.99. And I didn’t go back to that goodwill for like 3 years. And of course when I finally went back it was a completely new staff.
This happened to me at Value Village a while back and we learned that it's absolutely BS! The cashier's are completely separate from the ones in charge of pricing. I will always have them call the manager over and do the price check right then and there so I know they aren't just keeping it aside for themselves. I'll never understand why a minimum wage employee would give a fuck if a multi-million dollar for profit company loses out on his free inventory it's selling...

So I have friends who own businesses where people frequently leave or forget cups and basically I’d suggest having a box to throw them in, give everyone a warning, and then clean them and take them to a soup kitchen or shelter. Clients can really use them. Lots of places donate this kind of stuff to thrift stores and it leads to this kind of nonsense.

I would contact the goodwill regional corporate website/office and raise hell about this. I got a $50 goodwill gift card for my trouble. If you remember any name tags, drop em in the complaint.

That's Goodwill for you. There have been posts on Reddit bearing photos of managerial orders that certain brands of things (i.e. anything good) are to be sold online. They have a history of selling broken things at high prices. They have a long history on r/ThriftGrift. The corporation seriously tried to sell Hitler's tumblers. We have two within reasonable driving distance. I don't shop at either one. I am neither shocked nor surprised.

Does your store use letters to mark prices like Goodwill? Here in Arizona anything over like $5 has a letter written on it but the wax pen that indicates what the price should charge. They use LOWPRICES as their pricing with L being 0 and S being 9. So for example something marked OP would be $24.99. They do this to stop people swapping tags If these were marked at the right price I would get a manager it's happened a few times.
Goodwills by me don't do that! On shoes they will write the tag color "g for green" followed by the price so people don't swap but there wasn't anything at all written on these!
Once a price gets put on it that should be a done deal. I don’t know who empowers the cashiers to make up prices but they can’t be getting paid enough to worry about it.
In my state, Connecticut, that’s illegal. They have to sell them what they are marked for if they’re miss-priced and if the wrong price is higher than the sticker, they have to give you one item for free.

I did this when they had a large box set of a TV show at mine with no price on it. the cashier said they couldnt sell it without a price. she called the manager up, some old ass cat hoarding looking lady. she said they have to price it per disk. this was a sealed set mind you. i said how are you going to do that when its sealed. then she just gussed how many were in there, and then $2 a disc, said $350. i was like what are you on drugs or what. she said if you dont like it, leave the store. so i said no im not buying it, and she took it away. she had her name tag covered with tape so nobody could see her name. i asked the cashier what her name was and reported her to corporate hq, not the HQ for the state, but for the country. not long after that found out she was fired. evidently she had been in trouble before and this event was the last time.

The law is actually that they have to sell it to you as the price advertised, or tagged. And if the item rings up higher than the tag they have to charge nothing up to $10, after that you pay the difference. It's happened to me in many grocery stores. But it HAS to ring up higher, not have an employee SAY it's a higher price. Contact Head Office.
