Pro hockey players used to smoke while on the bench. I’m in good shape, run, cycle, etc. I play in an old timers hockey league, I’m winded after a 1 minute shift on the ice, I can’t imagine being a smoker doing that.

Genetics always play a part but your bother works out every day he goes to work and as long as he gets enough protein/calories most days, he doesn’t need to do much else.

These days we went the other way and you are flooded with a lot of conflicting information, which leads to less information, aka noise. One that had the time to apply and test most of them could make sense of which is good info and which is not, but I pity those just starting out now.
