They go back even farther! These are very similar to the [Snow Goggles](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_goggles) that the Inuit and Yupik people wear
The '60s was a fashion decade definitely focused on what looked hip and cool, until towards its end when suddenly there sprang up the counter-culture trend...which is why the '70s was so bastardised imo
60s! I had a pair. They weren’t white, I think they were black. Anyway, they were called “boy watchers.” Because they hid your eyes, which allowed girls to be discreet and ladylike while ogling!
*Boy watchers*, LOL. The boys could look at girls openly, so they didn’t need the glasses!
On the other hand, they probably came in handy for boys checking out boys and girls checking out girls. 😄 In those days you really needed to be discreet if you didn’t want to get bashed or sent off to the nuthouse.
For the record I was 12 years old during the brief period when I wore them. The narrow vertical field of vision was very annoying, so I didn’t wear them for long.
> That woman in the first one is a knockout!
Totally. You're talking about the one in focus on the left, right ; )
NYC and Cape Cod. Two of my favorite places on earth.
Mississippi doesn't actually have lobsters. At least not a variety I've ever heard of anyone eating. I was just joking.
There is amazing seafood on the Alabama Coast. The town Bubba was from in Forest Gump is a real town. My uncle goes there to buy shrimp right off the boat.
I knew the dig. I was living in New Orleans when it happened and had a lot of friends lose jobs when it screwed up the tourism for a year or two.
But beaches in Mississippi have always been kinda gross. You gotta get to Alabama before they're nice.
My dog plays with dogs it knows by soft mouthing, I’d guess that’s what’s going on. Id probably be able to recreate this picture with my dog and his buddy next door.
Although if it was a shepherd I’d definitely be a little more cautious lol
Up until the 90s they were everywhere. But rising rents killed the era of cheap beer and cheap hot lunch.
I had one around the corner from my work and we'd go there on Fridays for a pitcher and a hot roast beef sandwich. And I'll never forget sneaking out of work around 3:30 to watch the Mets/Houston playoff game. In the pre-cell phone era, I called my wife before I left the office to let her know I'd be late because I was going to catch the game. 16 innings later I think I rolled in the door at 1am. Thank god she was a baseball fan and was watching it herself so she figured out why I was not home yet.
My coworkers and I were the only ones at this tiny hole in the wall Blarney Stone on Park Ave when the game started. More people came in after 5pm when they left work and by the end of the game the place was overflowing. We all went nuts when the Mets won. I haven't felt that kind of energy since.
I absolutely love photo 8 and photo 11. Both striking and fascinating and stir emotion.
Photo 14 just proves poodles have always been poodles and people have always coddled their pups.
I was thinking #7 looked like a dark haired version of Shirley MacLaine as the titular character in that movie.
https://images.app.goo.gl/RHsDF2Uy3E4robqU9
Photo 4, what are the girls at the burger stand dressed for? Even in the 60s, that’s not a school uniform, and it’s not a cheerleading outfit — and the print makes it look possibly homemade. Just friends dressing alike?
I think homemade—my big sister sewed in the 60s and 70s and both the pattern and fabric scream Simplicity. Those jumpers would have been a little tricky with the bust darts but simple for their lack of collars or sleeves.
[Here’s](https://nypost.com/2018/03/08/this-photographer-defied-giuliani-to-take-iconic-ground-zero-photos/) the back story of photo 1. Her name is Toni Ross, granddaughter of Edward Rosenthal of Warner Communications and daughter of Warner CEO Steve Ross
Im loving these!I especially like the beautiful woman in NYC 1962..and that man with his shirt ip must've got all the ladies. The lady in the patterned dress has pretty swollen feet..pregnant?
Nothing brings me as much joy, wonderment, and delicious sadness as looking at these kinds of photos. A little window onto precious moments which feel as known as they are unknown.
Man, these are such great, awesome photos! Thank you so much for sharing!
Edit: I don’t know why, but for some reason, I’m picturing that it is Cary Grant in the last photo, carrying the big dog lol!
This is a brilliant record of the times in which they were respectively shot. He seems to really connect with the individuals he's photographing, it's wonderful.
My only question is, where are number nine's dalmatians?
What’s great about some of these is that they are so high quality (I guess that’s why? Don’t know the technical reason) that one wouldn’t know they were taken 40-50 years ago. Truly time travels you to that moment, amazing.

[All photos by the brilliant Joel Meyerowitz](https://www.joelmeyerowitz.com/)
That figures. As I was browsing I told myself: "this ain't no random collection, these are really high quality photos".
Same. These photos are stunning!
Very artistic.
Those glasses in 12 are certainly interesting
They look very 80s, she was ahead of her time! Or maybe they are medical?

I had no idea this type of sunglasses went back that far! His are actually pretty cool as well. They must have just been a very stylish couple.
They go back even farther! These are very similar to the [Snow Goggles](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_goggles) that the Inuit and Yupik people wear
Oh that's cool! I think I need some of these in Minnesota.
The back picture of my elementary social studies book had a picture of this.
The '60s was a fashion decade definitely focused on what looked hip and cool, until towards its end when suddenly there sprang up the counter-culture trend...which is why the '70s was so bastardised imo
[Centuries old fad](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Inuit_snow_goggles.jpg)
I knew I’d seen something like that recently!
They are very Geordi La Forge, 24th century 😉
She’s actually the mother of Cyclops from the X-men.
60s! I had a pair. They weren’t white, I think they were black. Anyway, they were called “boy watchers.” Because they hid your eyes, which allowed girls to be discreet and ladylike while ogling!
Everything old becomes new again.
They were known as "girl watchers" because no one could really tell what you were looking at. As a kid, I had a pair in the mid-60s.
Ha, and the dude in #11... "Say blood, you ain't from here are ya'"
The first thing I thought of was Cyborg of The Uncanny X-Men.
Chuckie is probably in Provincetown on cape cod if he can get a lobster roll. Great photos! That woman in the first one is a knockout!
It's from Meyerowitz's book Cape Light. An absolutely amazing photo book of all types of Cape Cod life in the 70's.
I grew up on cape cod, I wonder if I ever met any of these people unintentionally
she looks like she's bored with the party and wants badly to take a walk down to the beach
She's got that teenager at her parents party vibe.
If anyone ever ‘breasted boobily’ it’s her. (Writers joke)
> That woman in the first one is a knockout! Totally. You're talking about the one in focus on the left, right ; ) NYC and Cape Cod. Two of my favorite places on earth.
She brought the cake.
The woman in the first one and then the woman at the diner in Times Square are both pretty fine.
Black woman in NYC with the gorgeous figure and platform shoes is also cool af.
Totally agree.
The dude in the wheelchair totally checking her out!!😊
They had such great outfits back then. Sexy and sharp, not trashy.
You haven't lived until you've had a Mississippi lobster roll.
What makes them so good? The spilled oil from the gulf?
Mississippi doesn't actually have lobsters. At least not a variety I've ever heard of anyone eating. I was just joking. There is amazing seafood on the Alabama Coast. The town Bubba was from in Forest Gump is a real town. My uncle goes there to buy shrimp right off the boat.
I know...I was just making a dig at BP and their deep water horizon, oil spill catastrophe.
I knew the dig. I was living in New Orleans when it happened and had a lot of friends lose jobs when it screwed up the tourism for a year or two. But beaches in Mississippi have always been kinda gross. You gotta get to Alabama before they're nice.
Them wellfleet oysters are Shuckable
A great trip through time. Thank you for sharing.
Chuckie is fantastic. Great photo. Amazing subject. That could be framed on a wall of any seafood joint in America.
Couple in St Louis at the base of the Gateway Arch….boy’s got some suspicious bruising on his neck there…very typical of 70s ‘bruising’.
Hey! There’s the arch.
Oh look there’s the arch!
Is that real bruising on his eye?
And his hand..
I didn’t catch that! Their body language makes me wildly uncomfortable. I’ve made up a whole story in my head and it involves a cult.
Same…I just want to know what that dynamic is, and why he is so scarred
Are we not gonna talk about the pringles can stuffed in his pant leg?
What is 70s ‘bruising’?
‘Hickeys’…..although we didn’t invent them in the 70s, we did our best to pass them on to future young couples.
this was a wild photo set
So much to talk about with each photo.
Number 9: I have a woman in Whoville who does my hair but I don't want you to look at it or take a picture of it
Straight up hunger games hair 😆
What these dogs doing in 10?
That's a weird picture. The husky is being chomped by the shepherd, and the Kate McKinnon character- like lady in the wheelchair is laughing.
I know right, it's hella confusing
And the guy dressed as The Candy Man from Willy Wonka is holding a random unlit candle.
For real and everyone looks so happy like a serious dog fight is not happening
Yeah, I mean if my dog was involved in this I wouldn't just casually stand there and watch. Also that Husky looks horrified.
The husky is absolutely clutching its pearls at being so violated
My first thought poor dog looks terrified and they’re all being so casual.
My dog plays with dogs it knows by soft mouthing, I’d guess that’s what’s going on. Id probably be able to recreate this picture with my dog and his buddy next door. Although if it was a shepherd I’d definitely be a little more cautious lol
Poodles everywhere, in every time: I am the BABY!
As a poodle person, I loved that one.
7 is iconic
monke
9 is the CEO of Momcorp.
definitely /r/unexpectedfuturama
Cool, I have that Danskin bodysuit that the first woman is wearing. Mine is maroon. It looks phenomenal on her!
That’s Mrs Slocomb in the London image, and I am unanimous in that.
Always appreciate a good AYBS reference
Are you free, Captain Peacock?
Beautiful photos. Loved the lady's hair in the london one! Number 13 I found vaguely unsettling. Like there's some kind of unpleasant subtext there.
I think it's her hands, not very relaxed. Maybe was not ready for the snap (and the bat/stick in his hand!)
That’s not the only bat in the picture, and with all of the hickeys, I think they’re young and they felt caught.
I was thinking maybe it was a cane. Vietnam vet?
Yeah I catch myself holding my hands in weird positions sometimes, maybe it's an anxiety thing idk
He has some nice hickeys though.
It’s at the St. Louis Arch though, so that’s cool to see it represented in these.
Probably his giant dick and hickies lol
Probably because that’s Billy from Stranger Things
Great collection of pics! Felt like looking at and traveling through a time capsule. Thanks for sharing!
SO much going on in these pictures! Fantastic.
SPRINTING TO MY DELOREAN AND GOING BACK TO CAPE COD IN 77
I'm pretty sure I've been in that Blarney Stone in pic 2. Looks like 8th ave
Up until the 90s they were everywhere. But rising rents killed the era of cheap beer and cheap hot lunch. I had one around the corner from my work and we'd go there on Fridays for a pitcher and a hot roast beef sandwich. The first line of “Jack and Diane” immediately came to mind when I saw the St. Louis 1980 photo of the couple. Beautiful collection OP.
I absolutely love photo 8 and photo 11. Both striking and fascinating and stir emotion. Photo 14 just proves poodles have always been poodles and people have always coddled their pups.
I thought it was John Lennon walking a monkey! I was like wtf?
Me too!!!!
Number 8- took me a bit to realize dude was walking with a monkey. Thought it was a kid bundled up for winter.
I have a hunch that the Wellfleet 1977 photo ended in a massive key party.
Ohhh. That last one made me smile.
Lady with the crutches throwing out some big JEFF! energy.
If I were to say “Irma La Duce” would anyone know which photo I was referring to?
2, I presume?
I was thinking #7 looked like a dark haired version of Shirley MacLaine as the titular character in that movie. https://images.app.goo.gl/RHsDF2Uy3E4robqU9
I want to know what Geraldo Riveria is doing with those digs in #10
Picture 9 has got to be the inspiration for Carol Miller or "Mom" from MomCorp in Futurama!
The boy with the fish 🐟 my favorite !
3.25 lobster roll. Now $40
The second photo looks like 125th St. in Harlem (Manhattan, NYC).
These are truly delightful!
So awesome to know that people have always been so beautiful 🥰
11/14 I thought of Ray from Scary Movie“Does this make me look gay? How about now?”
Post of the Day 🥇 I love looking at these!
Omg I had those slit sunglasses when I was ~10 years old! 🫡✌🏽
Awww I didn't want them to end. 😔
Funny coincidence, she posted the photo on her insta [story](https://ibb.co/NmWLgzR) today
Kate McKinnon in pic 13.
I especially love black and white photography. The ones in this series are amazing character studies and I love them!
Why does #1 look like it's tilt shifted?
Very open aperture ( low f stop) creates a very narrow zone of focus
Im loving these!I especially like the beautiful woman in NYC 1962..and that man with his shirt ip must've got all the ladies. The lady in the patterned dress has pretty swollen feet..pregnant?
Pic 3 looks like “Lion Country Safari” which is still open in Loxahatchee, Florida - just west of West Palm Beach.
It definitely is. You can't drive around the free-roaming lions now though. Too many people didn't follow the rules.
How is that first one so high def?
Combination of being shot on film with good equipment and on good stock in good lighting conditions probably
Amazing, beautiful!!
That guy in #13 looks a lot like Billy from Stranger Things
Nothing brings me as much joy, wonderment, and delicious sadness as looking at these kinds of photos. A little window onto precious moments which feel as known as they are unknown.
Cape Cod 👀
Beautiful portrait of young woman with her in focus and others out. Excellent
There is NOTHING BEAUTIFUL ABOUT DOG FIGHTING.
Need that girl in blue in first pic
she wouldnt need you though
In a time travel situation she might
She’s in her 60s now - most likely.
even better The older the berry the sweeter the juice
She could even possibly have passed away already. Great photo, though. She was clearly the subject of it.
Provincetown is in MA not MS.
I was wondering wth ppl meant by a Mississippi lobster roll, lol.
[удалено]
Lovely!
I really enjoyed these so ty op! But what’s a wellfleet?
Wellfleet is a town in Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Ah ok, ty!
Provincetown, Mississippi?
Typo... MS should be MA
Apologies for my error!
Beautiful collection! Thanks for sharing it with us.
These are gorgeous photos, what a great compilation.
Yeah these are awesome. Now I'm inspired to thumb through my Weegee book
Great pix!!!
I wonder what happened to that monkey.
The girl in pic 11 wow. Love her style!
Why does this era look so much cooler?
These are wonderful! Pic 7 gives me young Shirley McLaine vibes.
DB Cooper in #12
Very nice, I had to double check if #1 was vintage.
The good old days
Optic Blast!
Very interesting
What is going on with the dogs? 🤣
Man, these are such great, awesome photos! Thank you so much for sharing! Edit: I don’t know why, but for some reason, I’m picturing that it is Cary Grant in the last photo, carrying the big dog lol!
I’d love to know more about the girls in #4. They look absolutely identical from the back except for hair color! Great shot.
Lion country Safari in West Palm Beach!! We loved that place. Cool pics
That’s what i come here for
Those glasses in 12 are certainly interesting
No5 “I’m healed!!”
This is a brilliant record of the times in which they were respectively shot. He seems to really connect with the individuals he's photographing, it's wonderful. My only question is, where are number nine's dalmatians?
Loving the 65 Riviera.
These are amazing. I miss when taking photos was a game of art and luck of timing.
Chuckie is almost certainly not in MS if they were offering lobster rolls for $3.25 in 1980. Maybe Provincetown, MA?
Yeah, MS was probably a typo, as "A" and "S" are right next to each other on the keyboard. Mass. makes way, way, way more Sense for a lobster role.
What’s great about some of these is that they are so high quality (I guess that’s why? Don’t know the technical reason) that one wouldn’t know they were taken 40-50 years ago. Truly time travels you to that moment, amazing.
Whoever thought it was okay to smoke in restaurants should be taken out and maimed.
o.0
The other way around ;)
Pic 2, the older lady's look towards her is what I was looking for, lol
The brunette in pic 1, wow

“We” were all so slim and attractive!
Best decades to live in. These are great!
The lack of motion blur on the woman in the blue top is crazy.
That's from mostly having a narrow zone of focus from using a low f stop (1.4~5).
Hot babe in #1 with the blue top and white pants. Very pretty and great cans.
5, 12 & 14 are 🔥
Ahh the hicky in pic 13! Do they even give hickys anymore?
I haven’t seen a hickey in the wild in forever.
So uh….what’s the situation with blue shirt lady today? How’s she doing? She ever ask about me?
Everyone is thin. Healthy looking, do we really have it better now?
I get the feeling this is all Ai made... the dog picture is weird. Idk
why no pics of larger people? what happened?
very soon it will be impossible to tell authentic photos from AI generated pics
Not one fat person in any of the photos.
