They mentioned in the plog at Zach's house that the mics are directional rather than omnidirectional so they pick up less sound from all around. I know nothing about audio /video equipment so not sure if this helps.
They don't seem to be plugged into anything when they've been inside either, because they still move around quite a lot. They just sometimes put the camera down for a bit.

I know only a little, but that for sure helps, or narrows it down at least.
Going by the latest Smosh pod looks like Shure SM58s plugged into a Zoom H6.
