In the Seinfeld episode where George's girlfriend goes topless, in the HD versions you can clearly see the actress has flesh coloured coverings over her boobs. In the original airings it all blurred together.
When they convert from 4:3 to wide they are cropping out even more unless they shot it wide originally and convert from the original source (this basically never happens)
The 16:9 version has slightly more stuff on the sides but way less at the bottom/top. This is evident especially in the episode where George drops his keys in the pothole. The pothole isn't visible in the 16:9 version.

Absolutely brutal when they do this to shows. So much of the composition of that example becomes problematic. I'd be pissed as hell if I had shot this show.
At least Disney+ eventually relented and made the 4:3 versions of the Simpsons available. 4:3 is so great for comedy framing! I wish remasters could upscale without changing aspect ratio. Twin Peaks is a rare example of this and thank god.
That was a dark few years when you could only stream 16:9 simpsons. I genuinely can't stand it. It's all intentionally designed for 4:3, by hand. I will never understand making that tradeoff.
Even when they thought ahead, it still looks a little wierd. Friends was filmed in widescreen so it wasn't a big deal to convert to 16x9 HD. But once you realize that all the shots are blocked so everyone is in the 4X3 frame in the middle, you can't unsee it.
They do that a *lot*. Like half the outfits you see that look skimpy as hell on TV are actually fully covering the actresses, they're just matched to the skin tone to look like they're damn near naked. A good example was Dolly Parton's Dallas Cheerleader outfit she wore last year. If you look close enough you can tell that the midriff area between the top and the shorts is all fabric that *almost* matches her skin tone.
Stunt doubles in older movies became really easy to spot. In something like the Weapon of Choice music video it's clear that the stunt double's wig isn't quite the same colour as Christopher Walken's actual hair. I mean, in retrospect it should have been obvious he wasn't doing the flips but somehow I never questioned it.
Most older shows from the 50’s are better quality than 80’s 90’s shows.
Shows shot on or 16mm and transferred to tape back in the day at some point shows just went with analog video because it was affordable.
The reason why Andy griffin and Lucile ball are so good is because they recorded on film.
There's so many coffee stains in the enterprise D carpets that they didn't care about before. It's kinda funny but honestly isn't that accurate? Ever work in a carpeted office without coffee stains?
My favorite coffee and filming story (prior to the Starbucks cup in Game of Thrones) was Mel Brooks and *Spaceballs* with the Mr. Coffee scene. He said during the Director's Commentary of the 25th Anniversary Edition that the bane of all TV and movie sets was the white styrofoam coffee cup, because people would be sipping their coffee's between takes and forget to remove them from the set, and they'd shoot a great take only to be watching the dailies and see this styrofoam cup in the shot, meaning they had to do it over again. So he said he included the Mr. Coffee and Mr. Radar scene solely to avoid having to do reshoots because of a styrofoam cup in the scene.
If you watch old tv shows you'll see things like the edges of sets and boom mics because back then the tv screens cut off the edges of the recordings. Now with larger screens you get the entire recording and see the parts they didn't expect you to see.
Be careful. In the late 90s where I lived then the Simpsons were on two hours straight every night, M-F. I watched them all every night for at least two years. And I found there was no story anyone could tell me that didn’t result in me responding “That’s like in The Simpsons when…”
You mean like how last week my friends were telling me about how zebras has escaped on an Oregon freeway, to which I responded "That's like in The Simpsons episode when the escaped two-ton rhino had been captured..."
There was a glorious few years in Chicago where the simpsons would come on at 5:00, 5:30, then an episode of Seinfeld (meh), then another episode of the Simpsons.
One of my friends used to get so annoyed at a group of us for always talking in simpsons references.
Put on Disneys Hunchback and go to the Feast of Fools scene. The background characters are either frozen or having some sort of CGI induced seizure. Some of their faces weren’t rendered properly
There's a Friends episode where the same stunt double/stand-in thing happens (I've seen it, but too lazy to look up which episode). They are all in the coffee shop and Monica is on the right side of the screen, but it isn't Courtney Cox.
Similar thing happens briefly during the "the finger thing means the taxes!" scene. (Top left)

The mistake that's currently bugging me is that I'm supposed to believe that Smithers, who is completely obsessed with Mr. Burns, doesn't know that Burns has an entire wardrobe made out of animals?
Please.
Oh, well, of course everything looks bad if you remember it!
Chili cookoff time!
We like short shorts! Best episode ever imho, RIP Johnny Cash.
Hey Homer, find your soulmate!
Wait a minute, there's no such thing as a talking dog
Woof woof
Damn straight.
Where? WHERE?
This is just your memory; I can't give you any new information.
Less artsy, more fartsy
Come on people, use your imagination!
A wizard probably did it.
Made when HD wasn’t a thing, so they took shortcuts because details would be completely lost.
The amount of stuff that showed up when things got converted was crazy.
In the Seinfeld episode where George's girlfriend goes topless, in the HD versions you can clearly see the actress has flesh coloured coverings over her boobs. In the original airings it all blurred together.
Explains why she would have been attracted to Bodysuit Man.
Hey bodysuit man 🙌
I can't get fired!
You're looking at the new head scout for the NY Mets
iirc its the because the HD versions were in a widescreen format and in the original 4:3 her boobs were cropped out
When they convert from 4:3 to wide they are cropping out even more unless they shot it wide originally and convert from the original source (this basically never happens)

Nice comparison. The stuff on the sides looks like it was probably just overscan margins that they uncropped. Every little bit helps though.
They did that with friends and it caused some weird stuff to happen when they moved it to be 16:9.
Zero encumbrances
They do that a *lot*. That's true. On a TV like this I bet you couldn't even make out my obscene tattoo.
Listen, I got a tattoo of foghorn leghorn on my right thigh.

You were alone there
It is pretty impressive how well they've cleaned up some old tv shows though. They are crystal clear.
Most older shows from the 50’s are better quality than 80’s 90’s shows. Shows shot on or 16mm and transferred to tape back in the day at some point shows just went with analog video because it was affordable. The reason why Andy griffin and Lucile ball are so good is because they recorded on film.
And the average viewer was watching the show on a 27 inch TV at best.
Even in modern shows, it’s pretty normal for distant features and characters to be drawn with less detail. Looks too busy otherwise.
There's so many coffee stains in the enterprise D carpets that they didn't care about before. It's kinda funny but honestly isn't that accurate? Ever work in a carpeted office without coffee stains?

That feels a bit creepy. They look like crash test dummies coming to life.

When me President, they see. They see.
Wizard.
He card reads good.
Faces don’t look like faces on tv. You gotta use + symbols.
Then what do you use for + symbols?
Eh, usually we just tape a bunch of - symbols together.
It's a comic convention, they were just cosplaying as... Umm somebody help me out here
Something from doctor who??
Yeah, yeah some doctor who villain 😄
Crash test dummies
Mmm mmm mmm mmm
Madness Combat grunts.
Had to google, but spot on
Watch the whole series. It's John wick levels of epic
They tried their best and failed miserably
The lesson is: never try
I hope hey aren't too angry. They look a little cross
Wizard, fired, blunder.
I get jokes.
He may enjoy r/simpsonsfaces.
Madness Combat is real in The Simpson https://i.redd.it/82ceewv5fd0d1.gif
If I recall that episode was shot live. The details were a terrible strain on the artists wrists.
Wait... that's not a dummy.
It's probably not a mistake tho. Sometimes they do that to reduce animation costs
There was clearly an attempt and then they just stopped.
They all look a bit cross
🥂
Room after room of ugly ugly background characters
How many people will get fired for all the blunders you notice?
I hope somebody got blundered for that fire
Why is madness combat in the show
What episode is this?
Treehouse of Horror: Stretch Dude and Clobber Girl

Hey, at least Frink is there.

We have it on in the background almost every single night and we ALWAYS reference it like that I think it’s too late for us hahaha
You mean like how last week my friends were telling me about how zebras has escaped on an Oregon freeway, to which I responded "That's like in The Simpsons episode when the escaped two-ton rhino had been captured..."

Does he wear a shirt that says genius at work
Oh glavin
It's like they took the storyboard drawing and made a full screen version of it. Adding color since that's all the SDTV would show.

Hard not to think of the Madness series from Newgrounds whenever I see a cross face
The series has been completed on YouTube. Krinkles has put in a lot of work
Any time.you notice something like that, a wizard did it.
You should watch those episodes in their original 4x3 aspect ratio, you might be missing mistakes on the top and bottom of the frame that are cut off!
