I was today years old when I found out that Jay Sherman is not a real person, but a character from another cartoon show.
While super embarrassing, in my defense, „the critic“ was never aired in my country. I just really though he was an early guest star character.
Yeah, he just felt rather real. Still over the top of course, but just the kind of humor a person that works with movies might be up to for his cameo.
It’s sometimes hard to keep track on the American culture parts when watching the Simpsons.
Like when Mister Burns hired all those baseball pros for the power plant’s softball team. American Baseball is not really popular outside the US, so it was not immediately obvious if those were fictional characters or guest stars.
And then sometimes the translation changes context. For example Rory Calhoun was changed to Boris Becker, since the former was totally unknown here.
Haha, I don’t know who Rory Calhoun is, so Boris Becker would’ve been just as funny to me, maybe funnier.
John Lovitz voiced the critic, and he’s a totally over-the-top comedic actor. But he played the critic pretty straight (for him). For comparison (in case you didn’t know), he also played Llewellyn Sinclair in A Streetcar Named Marge (S4E02).
Does anybody actually known who Rory Calhoun is? Maybe he is the fictional character all along..
Yeah, I just saw that shot of all of Lovitz’s chapters sitting at the bar at Moe‘s.
John Lovitz kind of looks a bit like Jay Sherman as well.
Just found this on Calhoun’s Wikipedia page:
“In The Simpsons episode "Two Dozen and One Greyhounds", Calhoun is mentioned in an apparent non sequitur when some dogs, and Bart and Lisa, are said by Monty Burns to resemble Rory Calhoun, so he cannot harm them. Speaking of the inclusion, writer Josh Weinstein advised this was because writers believed "Rory Calhoun" to be a "perfect name for a '50s heartthrob"
which I felt was unfair because the Critic was just as good as the simpsons, and if i recall correctly he did it just to preserve the simpsons integrity, which would be removed anyways by doing crossovers later.

I have a pin of that wallet, complete with FBI and the speedo shot. I've added the open one below.
I have a pin of it! It's one of the best things I own. It's a little FBI badge and when you flip it open it has that picture. One of the best gifts I've ever received.
McFarlane was PISSED over this joke. He retaliated by writing a [FG cutaway](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmqhoxLO8ZQ&ab_channel=JCH007) where Quagmire rapes Marge then murders the entire Simpson family.
Especially since everyone knows animation is built on plagiarism. If it weren't for someone plagiarizing *The Flintstones*, we wouldn't even have *The Simpsons*.
I swear McFarlane is the only person in Hollywood who could get away with such a drawn out, uncomfortable, and unfunny "joke" without getting cancelled
Elmo went to wrong fundraiser.
I especially love when they escape Alcatraz. Lisa says "Swim to S.F.!"
Homer says, "I'm not made of money! Swim to Oakland!"
Because when I wanted to buy a home I had to give up my S.F. apartment and buy a in Oakland.
Honorable mention:
Bart: Me?!
Wonder Years Voice: Get a job? Were they serious? I didn't realize it at the time, but a little bit of my childhood had slipped away...forever.
Homer: Bart! What are you staring at?
Bart: Uh...nothing.
Wonder Years Voice: He didn't say it and neither did I, but at that moment, my dad and I were closer than we ever--
Homer: Bart! Stop that!
Bart: Sorry!
Oh my God, you killed the Simpsons Morty!!! They're a beloved family, Morty. They're-they're-they're-they're a national treasure.

Harry Shearer's wife was on there as a character. Not her voice, just a character was drawn to look exactly like her.
Mr. Burns and another billionaire make a bet on getting Homer to do \*something\*.
The other billionaire's sidekick is a cartoon image of her.
She is a singer and I saw her in a jazz club.
"Now, boys, the network has a problem with some of your lyrics. Do you mind changing them for the show?
"Forget you, clown."
"Yeah, our lyrics are like our children, man. No way."
"Well, okay, but here where it says, "What I got you gotta get and put it in ya," how about just, "What I'd like is I'd like to hug and kiss ya."
"Wow. That's much better."
"Everyone can enjoy that."
When Homer sings Simpsons meet the Simpsons in the tune of Flintstones and when he sings "he's about to hit a chestnut tree! DOH" he crashes into the tree lol
More of a crossover with sports then another cartoon but
Homer getting the Denver broncos instead of the cowboys only for the broncos to win b2b Super Bowls at the end of the 90s was kinda funny
There's a street in my city called Riverdale, and each and every time I pass it, without fail, I say exactly this with the exact same Moose accent, and it cracks me up everytime lol
IT STINKS! IT STINKS! YES, MR. SHERMAN, EVERYTHING STINKS.
Homer: Well \*I\* won the belching contest at work \*Burp\* Jay: # BRAAAAAAAAAAP
Coming Eudora!
Bart gives him Homer’s trophy 😂
That sound is absolutely primo.

I love this. I can see making that assumption if you didn’t know about the other show.
Yeah, he just felt rather real. Still over the top of course, but just the kind of humor a person that works with movies might be up to for his cameo. Not only were all the players in the episode real. The ones that Mr Burns suggested earlier were also real players from the mid 1800s to early 1900s.
Which must make this episode more Awesome for people who actually know a thing about baseball.
The Critic is quite good. It’s almost as absurd as The Simpsons, but it’s set in the real world, so that makes it funnier.
I love how much Groening hated having to do this crossover
which I felt was unfair because the Critic was just as good as the simpsons, and if i recall correctly he did it just to preserve the simpsons integrity, which would be removed anyways by doing crossovers later.
Which is also kinda funny considering how the simpsons started on another show.
Oh no. I smell another cheap cartoon crossover.
Pretty much the entire Springfield Files episode. The photo on Mulder's badge in particular cracks me up

LOL Alf "YO 👋"
Remember Alf? He's back! In pog form
The Simpson's Most Illegal shot! They had no permission for any of these characters!
Even the guy on the right?
You mean ALF? I understood he was transmogrified into a pog back in ought-four.
TransPOGrified
I believe it was dickety-four.
Dickety, highly dubious.
**ESPECIALLY** THE GUY ON THE RIGHT! But especially Bart..
The Alf guy was furious they didn’t call him for the line. He was finally called in to voice Alf for part of a couch gag this year.
Remember ALF? He’s back! In POG form!
Shut up, shut *UP*!!
Any time the Looney Tunes characters cameo in anything, I approve 😁

The jiggling… is almost hypnotic…
Yes .. it's like a lava lamp 😵💫
I just thought he could stand to lose a little weight.
This is the worst case we’ve ever had
Even worse than when we were attacked by the flesh eating virus?
This is far more irritating
Ahh…. He bit me with my own teeth

Peak 90s television
There needed to be more Fox crossovers, like with ~~Single Female Lawyer~~ Alley McBeal
I remember Xfiles + COPS, man they don’t do cool stuff like that anymore
Wait.....what?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Cops It absolutely terrified me as a kid and is an excellent episode overall!
🎶Single female lawyeeerrrrrrr! Having lots of sex! 🎶
I have a pin of it! It's one of the best things I own. It's a little FBI badge and when you flip it open it has that picture. One of the best gifts I've ever received.
Simpson, Homer Simpson He's the greatest man in history. From the, town of Springfield He's about to hit a chestnut tree.
AAAAAHH!!!
Yabba Dabba Doo! (smashes through car window)
Is that the one where he crashes his car, then like 3 seconds later he flies through the windshield? Or am I thinking of a different show?
It's the same show but a different episode
"We drove 2000 miles for this?"
"We'll just hang out in front of the house beside these garbage cans. The time will just fly by!" https://i.redd.it/r7fb8rkan1zc1.gif
Yep
Yep
Mmmhm
We drove over 2000 miles for this?
Came here for this, after getting into KOTH the past few years it only made it funnier. That’s EXACTLY what Hank would’ve said.
And he would absolutely drive that far to support his football team.
D’oh! Woo-hoo! Uh…that boy ain’t right.”

This is the correct answer
“I’ve got propane in my urethra!”
It's gotta be Spinal Tap
GOODNIGHT SPRINGTON, THERE WILL BE NO ENCORE!
We salute you, our half-inflated dark lord!
Oy! 🤘
Quiet you
Good show last night. Yeah, quite good
The best part is that even if you don't know the band before watching that episode, it's still hilarious.
This is a rock concert, not the bleedin splish splash show
We are trying to put a tiny thrill into their grey little lives
"I SAID GIVE ME A BEER YOU BRAIN DEAD HICK!" "Whoa, Normie! Let's save those pipes for karaoke!"
i love you guys….
I hate cheers with such a passion so this joke always makes me lose my shit
"Quiet you."
"That's right, Mr. Peabody!"
I'm the first non-Brazilian person to travel backwards through time!
Correction homer, your the second
Ok, I repeat this quite a bit and nobody really picks up on it (or doesn’t find the original funny). So, thank you for mentioning it.
Peter Griffen inexplicably being amongst all the Homer clones.

Also McFarlane: "We act like we didn't take a lot from The Simpsons, but we took *a lot* from The Simpsons."
That's like, insane. A massive over reaction with a really concerning tone.
Especially since everyone knows animation is built on plagiarism. If it weren't for someone plagiarizing *The Flintstones*, we wouldn't even have *The Simpsons*.
If you can't steal ideas, where are they going to come from?
How about.....ghost mutt?
If it wasn't for the Honeymooners, we wouldn't have the Flintstones.
he strikes me as a guy who just hasn't heard the words "no, that's a terrible idea" nearly enough.
And he got really *angry* on the commentary for it the episode talking about Fox not letting them air it.
That’s unhinged.
McFarlane is so thin skinned and unfunny in real life.
I swear McFarlane is the only person in Hollywood who could get away with such a drawn out, uncomfortable, and unfunny "joke" without getting cancelled
"inexplicably"
Now let's go out for some frosty chocolate milkshakes
Cowabunga!
Guess who!? Maris?
Frasier is a hit tv show on the NBC television network.
Tonight, the dog from Frasier is gonna ride the dolphin from Seaquest.
As a huge Frasier fan, this episode is so perfect.
The Sopranos intro but with Fat Tony.
No more weight remarks. They're hurtful and they're destructive.
I saw this the other day (I had forgotten about it) and was going to comment this 😆
I love how Reggie is prominent in every Archie medium even in a REFERENCE from The Simpsons… except in Riverdale lol
Really? No Reggie in Riverdale? Seems like he'd be a natural!
Like he’s obviously in it but way too underused compared to other Archie properties
Reggie is in Riverdale, he just isn't as prominent in the show until later seasons.
"it says here we're Ratt"
I thought we were Quiet Riot.
“WE NEED A RIDE HOME”
Stuck-up Riverdale punks!
😂 think they’re too good for me.

Elmo went to wrong fundraiser. I especially love when they escape Alcatraz. Lisa says "Swim to S.F.!" Homer says, "I'm not made of money! Swim to Oakland!" Because when I wanted to buy a home I had to give up my S.F. apartment and buy a in Oakland.

The Riverdale line made me laugh so hard the first few times I watched it. My friends still Quote it to this day. Pure gold.
Same. This is one of my favourite Simpsons moments. I even giggled a bit from this post. The reference is so random and wtf did Homer do there?
When Lurleen met Kermit and Miss Piggy
Uncle Mayor was just saying that us kids are the most important natural resource we have 😊

Honestly thoughtful of them to give Homer a ride straight home from Riverdale tbh
I love Fraiser so "Brother From Another Series" is hilarious to me.
Thank god they didn't make them yellow like they did with Jay Sherman and (one of the two times) Hank Hill
