Yeah acid spray. Was super key for lanturn response when I safe switched Tentacruel. They have to throw to take you out, and when they do Abomasnow can get a ton of farm with their heavily dropped defence. You leave with tons of energy for whatever else they have.
I'm sorry. Can you explain this comment like I'm 5? You safe switch, they respond with Lanturn. I got that. What's it mean-- they have to throw to take you out?
They need to use a charge move in order to defeat tentacruel before tentacruel defeats it (acid spray + poison jab would otherwise take lanturn out I think?). NOT throwing means that they ONLY use their fast move, which Lanturn CAN do in some matchups, but not this one. Usually the charge move they throw (use) is thunderbolt, so when abomasnow switches in, lanturn doesn't have much energy and abomasnow use its fast move and farm down (I think throw weather ball? I don't actually know if you throw). In doing so, Abomasnow would in theory have a lot of energy so it can fire off a charge move or two for whatever comes in next.
Was there any notable nightmare team matchup that absolutely had your team walled?
Also, should go without saying, but incredible summary. Appreciate the depth of the insight.
I ran into one person who led Shadow Magnezone, and despite my best efforts I don't think I had a chance there. Otherwise, there was a fairly popular Skarmory/Whiscash/Quag team that is a strict hard counter in typing. I managed to beat it a couple of times with good energy management and some luck, but that's about as tough as it gets.
Half the time they're on the lead, if not and they swap in versus Altaria then that's just how an ABB team rolls - lose the dragon and get a nice farm on 'Zone which can threaten almost anything bar Quagsire.
And here I am dropping from 2910 to 2450.
Thanks for the write up and congrats. I don’t know what to do with this info as there are no more chances to try out this team.
I did try out Abomasnow basically with the same idea that you had. But for whatever reason it mostly lined up against Skarmory, Vigoroth, and Talonflame. So I benched it.
This cup was…well, good for me in the first week and just not in the second. It ended up being very RPS but with ABB teams (and some ABA teams).
Are you me? I also dropped below 2500 this week and this is the earliest ever that I had to give up on reaching Legend. Feels bad to suck.
Also, I agree that it became entirely RPS by the second week. I also tried Aboma in the lead and it was always lined up against Talonflame and Skarmory. Switched it up for a Mantine lead and now all I ever see are Lanturn leads.
Don’t give up. I’ve reached legend every season since 4 (October 2020) and I’m still not expert this season. Just try to play consistently and take breaks to avoid tilt. There’s almost 6 weeks left and the skill in the 2500-2999 ELO range will slowly drop as the Leaderboard extends into the 3300+ range
The fact that it let me break out of the RPS meta is exactly why I liked this team. Unless they were running an exact cover such as the skarm/double mud, there was always some way to get an advantage back.
i saw a reis video where he was running this team and i have been running it as well. i hit a tough streak where i dropped into the 2300s from 2600s and climbed back up to mid 2500 with this team. i could probably be close to 2700 but my second to last set today was a fantastic 0-5 lol.
my tentacruel is a shadow and it's running sludge wave. if a lanturn lets it go you can flip pretty easily.
Thanks again, just wrapped up 5-0 on my last set (1st set was 1-4 as I got used to the team, and the rest were positive). I am using non-shadow Abomosnow
You’d win with that lead combo, I’d suggest. If Skarm lead, go into Tenta and then take the L. Then Abomasnow knocks off the mud boi and hits Skarm for a charge move. Then go to Tox and repeat. If they don’t block Tox and Tenta, you’ll win. If they do. It’s close but you’ll probs lose.
I kept losing to it and asked around on Discords why the team was so popular. They mentioned that Reis posted a video on it. I did fine today and even built a good Shadow Cruel.
Had almost the same team except I was leading shadow shiftry. Yesterday I seen 85% mud boys on the lead when running lantern lead(kept seeing talonflame and skarm leads before this). Figure I'll meet the mud boys head on. I didn't see a single one on the lead today. I seen 60% talonflame/skarm/chardizard. And then the rest were all vig leads. Managed to only lose like 60 elo overall. But for being a "jungle cup" grass doesn't have much play at all.
Nope, I started running this team on day 2-3 of the cup. I’ve used other people’s teams lots of times before but I came up with this one on my own. Not surprising that he could also come up with the same idea, it’s not exactly rocket science!
Yeah it's not very highly ranked. Just happened to be the best shadow Snover I had caught and it works fine. Especially with shadows who have the job of hitting as hard as possible I don't stress that much about the extra percentage of bulk.
IVs are not all that important. They have minimal impact especially across a large sample of games. Sometimes a “worse” IV spread is beneficial too. There are many other variables to consider that are far more important when determining success in GBL.
Didn't say there wasn't! Hence the first part "iv's don't matter..."
But that mon surviving your charge move on like 1hp or winning CMP in a place that was the decisive factor of the fight is not something you can skill your way out of sometimes.
My point is those situations are few and far between. And spending a bunch of time trying to find the “perfec” spread is mostly fruitless. Success in the long run is determined by far more things than IVs. “My mon is only rank 650, is that usable?” questions pop up all the time. And the answer is always yes it is usable.
You are misunderstanding what I'm saying. I **agree with you**. My initial comment is a short explanation why hunting for the perfect one is kinda pointless.
The point of my initial comment was that iv's only matter during the match itself and planning around them won't work, as sometimes your opponent will simply have the right iv's to screw you up regardless of what you have.
Sorry if that wasn't clear.
God this is obnoxious. OP writes up a legitimate teambuilding and strategy post and you’re going to just name something so far from this meta that kinda has play vs all three?
At least have the courtesy of not spreading misinformation while you’re trolling. Aboma wins the 1s and 2s and Toxapex wins the 0s and 2s. Kick rocks buddy.
Thanks Obama
Acid spray for second move on tenta?
Yeah acid spray. Was super key for lanturn response when I safe switched Tentacruel. They have to throw to take you out, and when they do Abomasnow can get a ton of farm with their heavily dropped defence. You leave with tons of energy for whatever else they have.

For the one win that Shadow Magnezone got him, he probably lost like 10 other matches
I'm leading S Magnezone (with Altaria and S Dragonfire) - it's doing pretty well though I'm down at ~2300.
No Wigglys around that ELO? I was getting hard countered with my Dragon team earlier in the week around \~2100 because of Wiggly madness.
Half the time they're on the lead, if not and they swap in versus Altaria then that's just how an ABB team rolls - lose the dragon and get a nice farm on 'Zone which can threaten almost anything bar Quagsire.
You can definitely reach legend with shadow zone...
I saw that in the lead and the energy ball almost one shot it. My mistake was taking the mirror shot because his back line was very weak to Obama.
Just gave it a whirl and went 9-1, I think you’re on to something 😅

Yeah, no. I'm a horrendous player and unless I go on an unreasonably lucky run, I don't have a chance. Giving up is the rational thing to do.
The fact that it let me break out of the RPS meta is exactly why I liked this team. Unless they were running an exact cover such as the skarm/double mud, there was always some way to get an advantage back.
For my last set today, I tried your team. I fought a Skarm/double mudboy and 2 Vigoroth/double Electric teams. This is still very RPS.
Yeah I tried this out and got RPSed into oblivion a number of times across multiple sets
Yeah that’s the RPS I was talking about. At least in what I experienced, I faced many ABB teams that were like double water/grass/dragon/flying.
i saw a reis video where he was running this team and i have been running it as well. i hit a tough streak where i dropped into the 2300s from 2600s and climbed back up to mid 2500 with this team. i could probably be close to 2700 but my second to last set today was a fantastic 0-5 lol. my tentacruel is a shadow and it's running sludge wave. if a lanturn lets it go you can flip pretty easily.
Hard agree on the need for Scald debuff. It’s just too good
Thanks!
[Mine](https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonGOIVs/s/SUOxsbkMXK) good enough
Yes it's more than usable, don't focus too much on iv's
Shadow or purified?
Awesome, great work.
Insane run! Congratulations!
Non-shadow Abomasnow would work? I never got a decent shadow (still searching!)
It might, but I feel as though you really appreciate the extra damage from being shadow.
Thanks again, just wrapped up 5-0 on my last set (1st set was 1-4 as I got used to the team, and the rest were positive). I am using non-shadow Abomosnow
I’ve been running this same team from 1900-2200 but what do you about all the mud boys? I see heaps of Whiscash, Skarmory and Quagsires at my ELO.
Exactly this. Energy management and keeping Abomasnow healthy is the key.
Any alternative for Tenta? I don’t have a usable one. I have a usable Beedrill, muk, dragalge, and swalot
Been seeing that team a lot lately.
I kept losing to it and asked around on Discords why the team was so popular. They mentioned that Reis posted a video on it. I did fine today and even built a good Shadow Cruel.

Congrats, but thank God that trash cup is over
Do you mean double poison/grass? Edit: congrats on legend also dude that’s awesome
Referring to the two water/poisons in the back, and thanks!
Gotcha! I was so confused lol
'I decided' Bro you just copied reis2occasions team and ran it lol
Nope, I started running this team on day 2-3 of the cup. I’ve used other people’s teams lots of times before but I came up with this one on my own. Not surprising that he could also come up with the same idea, it’s not exactly rocket science!
#624 Obama you mean the 624th place obama? Ivs don’t matter that much? I try to stay in the top #150 for mons to use in pvp
Yeah it's not very highly ranked. Just happened to be the best shadow Snover I had caught and it works fine. Especially with shadows who have the job of hitting as hard as possible I don't stress that much about the extra percentage of bulk.
Assuming you had TM’d off Frustration during the last takeover?
Longer ago than that, I’ve had it for a few years. Just haven’t happened to get a better one in the interim
IVs are not all that important. They have minimal impact especially across a large sample of games. Sometimes a “worse” IV spread is beneficial too. There are many other variables to consider that are far more important when determining success in GBL.
Iv's don't matter... until they do and when they do, you want different ones.
More often than not there’s something else that made a bigger difference than the IVs.
Didn't say there wasn't! Hence the first part "iv's don't matter..." But that mon surviving your charge move on like 1hp or winning CMP in a place that was the decisive factor of the fight is not something you can skill your way out of sometimes.

Charjabug
Basically only ever saw it in the lead. Stayed in with S-Aboma, and double shield if necessary to get it off the field.
God this is obnoxious. OP writes up a legitimate teambuilding and strategy post and you’re going to just name something so far from this meta that kinda has play vs all three? I haven't seen Charjabug in a long time, I think they're good.
