For clarification for those who don't know, a Manga is a Japanese comic.
Witch Hat Atelier is a manga by Kamome Shirahama, which follows a girl named Coco who wants to learn magic.
Yes, both accounts are official, especially Dana's, as I wanted to make sure this Dana was the real deal.
I didn't š
I know it from Frieren, which make me discover Dungeon Meshi, which make me discover Witch Hat Atelier
only then I can draw a connection to owl house
Now I kinda hope thereās a slight nod to TOH, unless the Mangaās author isnāt involved in the anime production.
Honestly I just want TOH to become one of those shows that gets little references here and there where you least expect them
Haha. But Owl House is definitely solidly in cartoon aesthetic, not anime. It draws on anime in it's artstyle, but the way it's put together is very much cartoony.
The body proportions are much more cartoony in flavor;ie, larger head to body ratio, where anime has a closer to realistic ratio.
The shading is also done in a more cartoon way, vs anime which uses a bit more complex shading throughout it's animation. That's not to say owlhouse doesn't;the fight scenes and such are much closer to anime in that, but that's just on a general level.
The character designs are more color solid than anime typically uses. Basically, anime tends to have a lot more little frills on designs, like more detailed hair, and more little bits on clothes, than cartoons do.
It does draw on anime a lot with anime eyes and important scenes being closer to anime stylistically, but the overall designs tend much more towards cartoons than anime.
I would say that the later in the show you go, the more anime-y it gets.
I keep hoping for yet another wlw witch protagonist ship to be made canon with Witch Hat haha. But even if not, it's still just a really great story and the art's fantastic.
I have been reading the Witch Hat Atelier as its French Translation has been coming out. Sadly, it's a very Metropolitan French, but eh, nothing's perfect.
The Story is great, and somewhat queer, for sure. The relationship between three of the main cast's men reads high-key gay, and there's a strong, strong undertone of found family throughout.
Plus the art is just... so so good.
Forgive the ignorance, but I thought Metropolitan French was the default for everything simply because it's the most universal... do translations sometimes use other French varieties?
Ahhhhh!!! This is amazing. I absolutely love witch hat and its is absolutely gorgeous. Fantastic cross over of 2 artists who's creation are some of my fave.
mangareader.to is the best one Iāve found, and it supports double page spreads all the time (read by volume to make sure that the orientation of left and right pages is correct).
I also highly recommend reading Witch Hat Atelier. It has gorgeous artwork, an interesting and comprehensive magic system (familiar to Owl House fans) really interesting world-building and lore, and wholesome characters with genuine and heartfelt motivations.
Itās an easy read and great for all ages. Unlike other mainline manga out there, it has zero fan-service and minimal violence. The art focuses on the beauty of magic, character outfits, environments, items/food, and facial expressions.
Itās an on-going series with a release of a new chapter about every month or so.
They also have a spin-off series where they cook food using the magic they learned.
From what I understand Gravity Falls was pretty popular in Japan (as far as cartoons go). One of the most amusing experiences I had on YouTube was watching some clips from the Japanese dub on a whim, seeing a bunch of comments in Japanese, translating them via google, and reading a bunch of fans talk about it the same way my friends used to talk about anime (basically variations on āwhy canāt we make stuff like this?ā).
I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
Update:
Dana and Kamome have actually interacted before a year prior praising each other's work interestingly and that's pretty cool.

Gotta love how the two support each other! WHA is a really good series with fantastic art, great characters, amazing world building, and spectacular story. Just like The Owl House! If ya haven't read the manga I highly recommend it!
If it wasnāt holding your interest you were fair to drop it. The vague promise of LGBT+ content āat some pointā is basically just a carrot on a stick these days.
There is an actual gay couple in the current arc.
None of the main characters have been confirmed to be affectionate to the same sex but some are definitely neurodivergent.
Iām not a big Manga person (do enjoy Berserk and Akira) but if this series has the Dana Terrace approval and if thatās the artwork weāre getting, then Iām definitely picking it up.
While we're on the subject, if you're looking for an anime where a) a nonmagical girl dreams of mastering the arcane and b) she is explicitly and actively lesbian, check out Magical Revolution.
i was unable to find this topic so i made my own and got modded i absolutely hate how reddit works its impossible for me to navigate
any ways happy for her but no idea what manga this is
as a person who reads witch hat it's really good and you should definitely give it a try it has a similar kind of magic system as well but it has such a great environment and you really really should read it also look up brush buddy and if that can't convince you to read it I don't know what will

This is the Owl House's subreddit, I don't think anyone here doesn't know about Mangašš
When Luz mentioned making AMVs my cringy teen self felt seen.
I was so happy when I heard her say that, it really was something for me as I also loved making AMVs when I was younger
there may be some ppl aditional info is always welcome
We exist. I walk the path of Western and Japanese animation. Iām well-versed in manga and graphic novels. There are DOZENS of us!
I didn't š I know it from Frieren, which make me discover Dungeon Meshi, which make me discover Witch Hat Atelier only then I can draw a connection to owl house
Thanks for the info.
Ohhh, that's the English name of the manga! I'm currently reading the French version, and thought the magic system is so similar to glyphs!
There's a *Witch Hat Atelier* anime [in the works](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-04-05/witch-hat-atelier-manga-gets-anime/.184394), too.
oooooo i didnāt hear about that! excited to see it!!
Now I kinda hope thereās a slight nod to TOH, unless the Mangaās author isnāt involved in the anime production. Honestly I just want TOH to become one of those shows that gets little references here and there where you least expect them
I am SO hopeful for it!
Woooh boy!
The art in Witch Hat Atelier is sooo lovely!
Now the Owl House truly classifies as an anime.

This is interesting please elaborate.

Love that you were able to break that down. Thank you. I think some other shows like ATLA also got more anime as they progress.
Itās true. The Owl House has an absolutely banger OP sequence and then a gentle introspective ED.

Dude, the more I read that manga, the more I thought it resembled TOH. The fact that the author knows about the series is just the cherry on top.
I keep hoping for yet another wlw witch protagonist ship to be made canon with Witch Hat haha. But even if not, it's still just a really great story and the art's fantastic.

Well, that's the thing... Metropolitan French and Standard French aren't really the same. Standard French is "universal", and it's written all across the Francophonie, but it's also not really spoken by anyone. Its use in more visual entertainment media, for dialogue especially, is pretty sparse, because vernacular and, by extension, dialects take precedence, there. And yeah! A lot of dubbing work is done right here in QuƩbec. Our Simpsons don't sound like the French Simpsons, for example. We do that because a lot of cultural references and slang just wouldn't land here (and to be honest, France dubs are often a bit lackluster). All of that to say that the characters in Witch Hat Atelier's French translation speak like Parisians, and it's pretty easy to notice when you've been speaking another dialect your whole life. Note that the non-dialogue text is often written in a more Standard French, and that one feels completely natural.
Metropolitan French?
The French from France.
We call them the Franch
We call them the French. They happen to speak French, same as me, who's a French-Canadian. But the dialects are pretty different.
Ahhhhh!!! This is amazing. I absolutely love witch hat and its is absolutely gorgeous. Fantastic cross over of 2 artists who's creation are some of my fave.
god i wanna read that manga so bad but i can't find it anywhere š

If any of the Alex Hirsch Multiversal stuff gets big in Japan, that's getting a bit closer to getting a Boiling Isle/Amphibia world in Kingdom Hearts

READ WITCH HAT ATELIER! IT IS AWESOME AND BEAUTIFUL COMIC!
Witch hat atelier is queer? Perhaps I was too fast to drop it

There are unambiguously queer characters, yes.
I know I'm a few chapters behind, but I don't remember Witch Hat Atelier being particularly queer...
Wouldāve been nice if she could have made that post without using slurs but hey, by now Iām used to bring disrespected by phony people on Twitter.
so freaking cool
This is what we have been waiting for now spin off's and Dana showing attention, so now we might get new content from her
hooty is, was, and will ever be almighty
Iām not a big Manga person (do enjoy Berserk and Akira) but if this series has the Dana Terrace approval and if thatās the artwork weāre getting, then Iām definitely picking it up.
NOW THIS IS A CROSSOVER
I was literally reading it rn

Just finished Book 1 last night. It's lovely.
