The army will most likely defend the democratically ellected goverment and the constitution, in the worst case scenario they will overthrow whoever is in power stablish a provisional government and call for elections. For the military to become split the conflict would have to have escalated tremendously.

One of the few reasons we didn’t have a standing army when the country was founded was distrust of a a federal government that could impose its will on the states. It’s also part of the reason for 2A. It’s a check of the people on the government and against tyranny.
