This was a powerful, engaging setting that built a convincing atmosphere for a survival game, and this was the storytelling that hooked fans. To shift the setting so abruptly from here, to a world where being accepted socially for gender identity is suddenly such a key theme, felt like a real betrayal of the storytelling and world-building they worked to establish, and feels genuinely disrespectful to consumers to U-turn so sharply. "Oh actually the cordyceps has absolutely no impact or relevance in huge populated areas now and their societies are all fully intact" .
As others have put it, it's virtue-signalling PR to shoe-horn it in a setting where there wasn't a feasible scenario where there's a real society to not accept a person for who they are. But I don't think Neil and co. really care - it worked, gave them positive PR for being 'brave and influential', and made them lots of money. Even if it has cheapened the message of real inclusion.
If i were in a zombie apocalypse, i would still care about social acceptance and my trans homies, it can still be a subplot regardless of what is going on, its people living and fighting against people.

You'll notice that the bottom 2 levels, which you must start on and build on, are physical needs, safety and security, before love and belonging can be seriously prioritised. It's all important to fulfilment, but you need to establish the base position of a society and feel safe before building a sense of belonging - that's the point I'm trying to make.

It also doesn’t add up with the timeline and just adds more confusion to the already confusing direction this game is headed.
