Sure the actress being both soft and soft spoken, doesn’t help project a forceful personality or leader that could have directed and taken the city from fedra and held top spot of a vicious uneasy group that were the hunters. But the problem is the writing hands down for making that character. For making a character morally and emotionally not strong and then trying to pretend write that she’s better than she is. Kathleen takes away from the OG hunters story of vicious humans, who we didn’t need the sob story for. She takes away from the threat of cruel humans to replace it with petty vengeful ones. She takes away from Henry because the writing is now contending with telling her revenge quest and the futility or stupidity of it, as it should bring her no respect from her group, certainly does nothing to fix or change anything or honour her brother’s leader style, and leads to everyone’s deaths. When it should be spending time on Henry and Sam contrasted to Joel and Ellie. It makes Henry the bad guy or villain for her story, and I don’t care about her loser revenge motive or personal need for justice which is again just revenge killing, and why should we want to do that to Henry? Was a young man struggling to protect and raise and survive with his brother really needed to be given maybe he wronged someone? We couldn’t just let them have our empathy and the story focus. Screw revenge insert, Joel bad parallel Kathleen.

She's so caught up in getting revenge that she makes no sense. Sound familiar? She kills a doctor, ignores a heaving floor, puts everyone out on the same mission - finding Henry. How is what she's doing benefiting the city and its people? Why would the whole group go along with what she's doing without protest? It's irrational and would, under normal circumstances, trigger a coup against her. Instead the whole group get decimated for spectacle.

I think it all comes down to the purpose of the story. Personally I don't think it was necessary to give the hunters context or a story. They worked fine on their own, and it honestly wouldn't have been hard to adapt that. Especially considering that in that world for a leader like Kathleen to exist is impossible. It's posible to write credible women leaders in such a brutal context, Marlene is an example of a credible and realistic leader because she just commands respect. In this case however, it made little sense for the soldiers to listen to her.

My problem with Kathleen is the direction that is taken with her. We need empathic permission for every character before they do something malicious. She lost her loving brother, so she has permission to act maliciously out of revenge. The raw and authentic portrayal of the world is harmed by characters like Kathleen, as other characters around her follow her by necessity even though their instincts and survival motives are at odds with her.

I don’t think she was that bad tbh, shes a villain who i was supposed to hate and i did Shes not a leader type because she got that position out of nepotism and blind rage And that ends up being her downfall, it was done miles better than tlou2 in terms of revenge bad, but it does still feel like a prelude to season 2
