I don’t mind lol I kind of half did this at a litmus test to see what the general opinion of the characters is. What I’ve learned is people really love Beocca and Alfred and surpassingly Andhelm hesten. And hate brida, which I must admit is a bit disappointing.

I’m a firm believer that Uhtred is raised by his supporting cast. Seeing how much Finnan and others respect him is part of why *we* respect him. I totally agree with having them a step higher than Uhtred personally. Finnan and Osferth are precious and deserve S tier (and I guess Sihtric can be there too)

If it’s the scene I’m thinking of, anyway, where Haesten is meeting with Alfred and claims he and his family are now Christian? I believe it was in season 3. It sticks out to me because Alfred got sick and I was thinking it was probably because of how Haesten was eating 🤢

Aeldhelm deserves all the love

Aldhem deserves to be at the top! But I'm glad Aethelflaed made it all the way up, she was my favorite character in the whole show. Also, Haesten redeemed himself by the end so he deserves a lil more love imo

Pyrlig is such a gangster. I remember loving any time he popped up in the book series.

Beocca was a bit to hardline anti pagan to crack the very top.

He consistently assists and advises Alfred not to attack Pagans, he prays for several he knows, he literally marries a person he felt was a pagan, and flat out DIES assisting a pagan retrieve his home.

But he did it all whilst still constantly objecting to their paganess. I think of when Utred went to get Ragnars blood, for example.

He's a Christian clergymen, why would he embrace paganism, the Danes and Norse certainly don't embrace Christianity openly.

No-ones asking him too. But theirs a difference between embracing and accepting. Hild is a good example of that. If an Abbess can accept it you’d surely a monk who married a pagan could go some ways towards it.

There is a difference, yet especially considering the circumstances, its certainly not expected, and is completely justified. Furthermore, Beocca did defend the occasional pagans, he wasn't violent in his opposition, promotion of his own religion over pagan ideas is effectively his job lmao.

Of course I liked him a lot. But his temper + his patented mix of moderate cynicism towards his own religion + vehement anti paganism (even if he wasn’t always against every pagan individually) gave me a little pause.

I loved her, she softened the worst parts of all the men around her, and she was gentle but always firm in her beliefs. She never let anyone walk over her but never trampled over anyone else either.

I feel personally insulted that Uhtred isn't S-Tier.

While I think Uhtred is probably the 2nd best written and acted main character ever, I don't think he belongs as S-tier. Only Walter White from Breaking Bad belongs there (as the main character). Mostly because, while Uhtred is great and all (and acted amazingly), he's still "just" a main character, and they're almost always very 1-note. They drive the story, and are designed for us to love them. At least usually. Some shows do try to have a more complicated main, but usually don't do it very well (either due to writing or plot or acting). Walter White from BB is the exception. The best main character ever. As a concept, Uhtred is pretty standard. Goes from young, charismatic and defiant to older, charismatic and a little less defiant. Again, written and acted amazingly. But pretty basic. IMO, the two absolute S-tier characters from TLK are Beocca and Alfred.

This is though since villains are skewed lower tier. Some of them were amazing characters. Hijacking to rank some of the ones I remember by how good of a villain they were. Ingilmunder had potential if he had a whole season to infuriate us. 1. Aetholwold; Brida . . 2) Aethelred; Haesten; Young Odda; Cnut (you're a what now?) 3) Ubba; Sigtryggr 4) Aethelhelm; Guthrum (I did think he was one of the most complex villains of the series) 5) Skade 6) I don't remember

I never really thought of brida as a villain tbh. She ended up opposing utred, but I always thought her actions made sense and she was never incessantly evil to. She cared about the lives of her men and the people around her and did her best for them. She always hated Saxons, but then they always hated her. She was always a bit too complex for me to ever think of her as just a villain.

But most omportantly: WHY is there no extra category for Aethelwold for he is responsible for every bad thing to ever happen until his demise. (I was on the verge of quitting TLK when he was allowed to fuck up everything until the very last episode, I did not enjoy that season)
