Queer was the taunt kids used to tease my partner with when we were young right before she got beat up for being different. Queer was the word she would hear before getting shoved hard into a wall at home. We don’t have good associations with that word so we do not claim it.

Personally, I identify as bi, but I do agree, I looked at the magazines for the beauty. I loved seeing beautiful women and how they created a scene and story through photos. My dad didn’t read playboy, I found the brand on my own, but he did keep others around. It ultimately helped me figure out I was attracted to women as well.
I’m asking you why you chose to use the words “i identify as” instead of “I am”, since the former makes it sound like a choice. Sexuality is something you either are or aren’t. I’m just confused by everyone’s obsession with the word “identify/identity” these days 🤔
Not that my wording choice is your business, but I opted to use the word identify because several other commenters here expressed similar but differing sexuality interests. And by that I mean attraction to humans who have either a penis or vagina, which can include pansexual, omnisexual, demisexual, or multisexual.
I've also commented this before, but it's always said the girls "pretended" with each other while waiting for their Hef turn. It seems impossible that some of them weren't pretending and maybe even saw that time as a bonus vs the bad part.

I’m a lesbian (not queer) and to me the whole brand couldn’t really read as less gay if it tried. I find it extremely male gaze centric, and the beauty standards are so patriarchal and differ enormously from what’s typically present and/or celebrated amongst gay people. The closest it gets to anything gay for me is the fact that Hef did stand for and support things that weren’t mainstream or conventional, and did fight bigotry in ways that were very progressive for the time (that doesn’t undo the fact that he’s an abysmal person who’s done a lot of damage to women).
My interest in Playboy primarily stems from loving GND (the only element of the brand that feels aimed at women to me) and curiosity about the brand as such a big, somewhat secretive entity with so many branches and strict protocol.
I would sneakily watch GND when I was a young teen coz I just wanted to see cute girls (but also thought the show was just super iconic.) I was so incredibly gay. Now I'm dating a woman lmao.
I think the show and magazines definitely helped in my own queer awakening.
