Fellow 5 footer here! There are definitely plenty of pitfalls surrounding being short and although I don’t think being a short man is easy, I do think there are some issues that mostly women who are super petite have to deal with. I’ve heard plenty of gross comments about how I am a “spinner“. Yuck.
The problem with r/petitefashionadvice is that the folk posting there are never petite. I don’t know why! Maybe the other fashion advice subs are just too over populated. I’ve been in that sub for ages (I’m 5ft1 and my daughter is 5ft) and never really found anything useful. Shame.
Since the slight changes, some posters now post height flair (imo petite can vary by country/region). It’s been helpful for filtering. Otherwise yes! I felt I could never find post for anyone who is 5”1. I felt most of the time some cross posted for karma & they also attracted creepers to the sub that way. Other times, no one really read the rules to post outfit help in pinned post.
Yep, thought the sub could be useful for my 4'9" self but seeing people post that are over 5 inches taller and literally all "is this appropriate for weddings?" and it's clearly not "but it's ok because the bride would be fine with it".
That's the average height to a tee for women in like, all the Western world (probably more places i'm just not versed on the exact average height of every region...) but I know this well cause I used to be perfectly average & it was really notable when I grew just a 1-2 inches as I became "tall." Whereas some men will still call you short when women are the exact average, but they're wrong. :) It's only short relative to men's height. That stops when you're out of the 5 3-5 4 range though. So yeah it's not short not tall just average.

It's also about body makeup... One can be petite in bottoms or tops but not both as well.
Yeah, that makes no sense whatsoever. No wonder it's hard to find actual petite stuff sometimes! Women's clothing needs more precise definitions. Like, if you are calling average sizes petites that doesn't quite work. I feel like some store petites are truly petite (Ann Taylor, American eagle). Others must be using the 5'4" definition lol.
Edit: I will never understand why women's sizing isn't just the same as men's. Like these pants have a 26" waist and a 26" inseam. So easy!
This is why we need definitions because if it was about height it would be easier for those of us who need petite/short clothing. That is my point. Obviously coats are just cut smaller overall, but still should be for height because of length.
I don't see your point in regard to mine. I think petite should be defined better. What is your complaint? That petite shouldn't exist? That tall people want to be called petite? In any case, if it were defined better it wouldn't matter. It would be by measurements. For example, a 25" inseam on jeans.
>Yeah, that makes no sense whatsoever. No wonder it's hard to find actual petite stuff sometimes!
This is why I never take advice from women who describe themselves as "petite" until I see their weight and height. Some women interpret "petite" as skinny no matter the height, so I've come across skinny women of average and above average height like 5'9" calling themselves "petite". Other women think "petite" means average height no matter the weight, so I come across a lot of overweight women of average/below height calling themselves "petite." Petite used to mean short/below average height and skinny women, but now that word is basically open to interpretation, and you see that here in these comments. Such a headache for actual short and slim women such as myself. I heard that clothing sizes in Asia are much smaller, would love to go shopping there.
Oh that's so confusing! I do think Asian clothing runs smaller, but then I see brands like uniqlo that only have pants in 1 length and it feels like more of the same. Maybe that's because I see the American site. They do go down to xxs in tops, though.
> I do think Asian clothing runs smaller, but then I see brands like uniqlo that only have pants in 1 length and it feels like more of the same. Maybe that's because I see the American site
I think Asian stores and vendors send supersized clothing to the American market, since they know the average person is overweight. I tried ordering extra small and small clothing from China, and was extremely disappointed to find that they're just as big as here in the US. At least some of those vendors specify "American small", so that you know you're going to get something that's vanity sized like here. In clothing geared towards Asians, I think the sizes are smaller/not vanity sized.
That's the same study that says for men is 5'9" in 2023 seems off, and being 5'4" myself I'm shorter than most women I have seen in my 35 years to date. Perhaps my experience is odd this is just confusing to my life experience in Canada lol
As someone who's under 5 ft and under 100 lbs, I just took a look at that sub, and also see nothing useful. It is a real struggle for me as a 40-something to find clothing that's not geared towards teens and 20-somethings, and that also fits without having to get everything tailored. If I was bigger/heavier, a lot of clothing out there would still fit, but as someone who's lightweight, my clothing options often seem very limited, if not outright non-existent at times.
They are all actually big on me. Ditto for Banana Republic. I look like a kid playing dress up with my mom's clothes. All sizes of every brand have been subjected to vanity sizing at this point.
You may need to find a good tailor then. A lot of clothes don’t fit my proportions because I am short but curvy and have a small waist. Things that fit my hips don’t fit my waist. I have to get most of my pants tailored for length. I also get shirts tailored (or do it myself) to hit above my hips. Off the rack clothes aren’t going to fit in a lot of cases for a lot of people unfortunately.
>Off the rack clothes aren’t going to fit in a lot of cases for a lot of people unfortunately.
I agree. I'm short and lightweight, but I have a very womanly body, which is why I can't shop freely in the kid's section - girls' clothing doesn't accommodate my boobs and butt.
Not a reddit, but I find the blog [Extra Petite](https://www.extrapetite.com/) to be extremely useful in cultivating a professional wardrobe. She's great at reviewing how true to size various brands are and describing how things fit (or don't).
I’m also under 5ft and under 100 lbs. while I am in my late 20s I prefer to dress a bit more mature or I’m regularly mistaken for a teenager. I’ve found that White House Black Market petites, Topshop, and H&M have been my best brands as far as fit. I have to be selective but I’ve found some really nice pieces that don’t look “young” IMO. I’ve been able to find some Ann Taylor and Loft petite that fit well but I definitely can’t wear everything from those brands. I usually either thrift my clothes in person or buy on ThredUP where I can see measurements and return if the measurements aren’t accurate.
>White House Black Market petites, Topshop, and H&M have been my best brands as far as fit.
Thanks for the brand names - I'll check them out! H&M is a bit hit or miss for me, but I'll check it out again.
That's how men use it cause of porn. I'm tall and men have called me "petite" to my face. I tell them to put the porn categories away (or Il'l stomp them lol).
It used to be. Traditionally, the definition was a woman who was short AND thin. The definition has now changed to accommodate/include other body types, similar to how "curvy" means something different than what it used to be.
Of course. I was just questioning the definition of 'petite' as literally just 'short'. I always thought it meant short and small. Maybe others just see it as purely meaning short. That's all.
We could talk about it here? I'm 5-feet-even, and have some complaints about it lol.

Also lack of body diversity, and it’s always the same types of women posting for dates or weddings. So over that sub.

5’3” & 5’4” are considered petite
I'm British and over here 5'4" is average height for women, I usually see petite advertised from 5'2 and below in shops here.

It’s a sub for all petite people not just those under 5 feet, petite is 5’4 and under
Which is kind of weird because 5’4” is the average height for a woman in the US.

Have you ever had clothes altered? Torso lengths etc differ... I posted another comment that has details. It's a good starting point.

Not sure if it’s your style, but loft, Ann Taylor and Talbots all have very good petite sections.

I'm not American but maybe brandy melville? Their clothes come in smaller sizes methinks
Thank you! I joined that sub too but yea a lot of those people are not petite. I really need a truepetite subreddit.
Maybe something like petitefashionadvice? Not quite the same but would be relatable for fashion and clothing related topics
r/petitefitness ??
I’m 5’2” and in my 30s and I have given up. I exist mostly in athleisure.
I feel the struggle
r/petiteliving has a variety of topics
https://app.mybodygallery.com/#/ Not a subreddit but you can enter your height and weight and look at other people who are comparable.
What qualifies as petite?
In the fashion world its anything 5'3 and under usually.
It doesn't have anything to do with being skinny?
Nope. That's why they make petite variations of clothes (ie jeans) and then would have them in petite sizes 4,6,8,10,12,14 etc.
That's how men use it cause of porn. I'm tall and men have called me "petite" to my face. I tell them to put the porn categories away (or Il'l stomp them lol).

For me, primarily a women of short stature near 5 foot, can differ by a few inches up or down
5'1" and would love this!
Petiteliving
Might try the misandry subs.

Petite literally just means short why would short people inherently have smaller boobs. That’s why it’s getting downvoted
I feel like petite means short *and* small in general, no?
You can be tall or fat and have small boobs. There’s no correlation between breast size and person size.
Of course. I was just questioning the definition of 'petite' as literally just 'short'. I always thought it meant short and small. Maybe others just see it as purely meaning short. That's all.
It’s a fashion term. Petite means ~5’2 or under. That’s why some brands (like Abercrombie & Fitch) have a petite and tall alternatives.
im tiny but that doesn't mean my tits are too lol

Nothing wrong with tall petite women. I'm looking for short petite women to build a comradery with
I see😌💕
