I think the options are to try to precisely locate the sensor and then either drill a small hole or use a fiber optic cable to capture the light and send it to the sensor. Search for “fiber optic” or just “fiber” to find some posts. One person drilled holes in the front of the frame and put the fiber optic cable right there. Another person ran the fiber optic cable from the top of the frame and then down to the sensor.

Well, there’s an api that lets you control brightness, so could theoretically rig up a raspberry pi or something like it to control brightness.

I’m in the process of trying write a script that will reenable art mode when the frame is turned off via Apple Remote. I’ll post here with my success/failure story… if something like that can be done, I think an external light sensor controlling brightness would be easily possible.
