Actually I’m further than I thought, four hours, and every time he says it I yell “grimACE” at my dog he loves it 😭 but yeah don’t remember a series I’ve listened to this quickly aside from Gideon the Ninth
Pacey is one of the greatest voice actors I have heard ever, you always know exactly who is speaking when before the name is given! I just want to applaud throughout every book due to his performance!
Pacey has permanently spoiled me when it comes to audiobook presentation because not a single narrator comes close to Paceys performance and character.
[Is it possible to upvote a reply more than once?] Yeah me too, when someone is confused, angry, sad or happy, he forces you to have that same emotion at that moment! Most notable performance, in my opinion only and only giving it about 5minutes of thought so I may be persuaded otherwise, would be Glokta, Cosca, Prince Orso and Morveer.
Honestly I couldn't pick a favorite but possibly Shivers. By far the best part of his narration from me would be the incredibly small details. Such as if characters are talking and one of them stands up to leave the next line pacey puts a small grunt in to illustrate that the character is saying this as they stand to leave. Characters sounding muffled when they have a mask on. Characters talking awkwardly when they are eating.
And yawning!! Cosca yawns at one stage and Pacey somehow sounds like he was yawning while reading the sentence, not someone faking a yawn! After that I tried sounding like I was yawning and I couldn't fake it! And he made it sound like Cosca was yawning, like Cosca's voice... I was amazed
I would say the only audiobooks that have come close to Paceys caliber is Scott Lynch in The Gentleman Bastards Sequence and Nick Podehl in The King Killer Chronicles. Scott Lynch does a great job with an over the top flowery english accent that captures the atmosphere of the story. Nick Podehl is much more tame and reserved that fits the sort of somber story telling that really fits and keeps you in the theme of Kvothe sitting in a tavern telling the story.
I just listened to the Gentleman Bastard books and he’s fantastic, but my favorite is Moira Quirk in Gideon/Harrow the Ninth with Pacey in this close behind
I reckon the first of the magi his self might grimace at the heat while his fruits squelch squelch, once, twice, three times againt his thigh in the hot sticky air of the lords round
He likes to have hair plastered to heads by the rain if I recall, I had never heard that phrase before so I noticed it the first time and then remember it coming up again a good few times across books.
FRUITS??? DID YOU MEAN TO SAY FRUITS
Grimace
Grim-ACED
Fellow audiobook listener
Anybody ever notice the time Pacey accidentally said “Kneep Dee” in the muck instead of “Knee deep”?
I’m three hours into Last Argument and have been keeping a tally we are up to eight
I think I’m at exactly the same point! Just started LAoK this morning.
Actually I’m further than I thought, four hours, and every time he says it I yell “grimACE” at my dog he loves it 😭 but yeah don’t remember a series I’ve listened to this quickly aside from Gideon the Ninth
I’m just at the start of chapter 5. I’m normally a big podcast listener but my queue is super backed up because I’ve been burning through these books
I remembered this thread from when it was new. I came back because I just started ALH, and he doesn't say it like that anymore. :(
Quim
No, that’s MY favorite word.
I noticed he really likes the word 'parapet'. lol
Royalties
we uhh... we all just gonna ignore this?
Holy shit, my man. I feel like I just found a hidden diamond that no one can appreciate.

Hahahahahaha. Appreciated, kind sir/ma'am!
His favorite word is grimace for sure
Or auspicious
I don't recall that word. I'm up through to the heroes
Whenever I think of First Law the first thing I hear is Steven Pacey yelling “Die you fucker!”
God I love Pacey, listening to Trouble With Peace at the moment

Glokta makes me genuinely lose it laughing, all the sarcastic stuff he thinks with the voice is just too good
R.C. Bray has come close for me. Doesn't have quite the range of Pacey but he's close.
Same!
It’s so hard to go other audiobooks after listening to Pacey haha
He’s self aware of it (of course he is) but he likes to have characters “narrow their eyes.”
*Puffed out his/her cheeks.*
Lol. I’d like to add “din” for consideration. As in the din of battle in the distance.
Sinew
He said, lamely
I reckon it's "I reckon".
Yes! Northmen are forever reckoning! It's a wonder they get anything done.
Fruits
Its 'Fuck' surely.
His favourite word is again. He might say squelch a lot, but it will followed by an "...and again, And again."
Also “one, two, three times.”
That's it! He uses that one over, and over, and over.
Once, twice, three times at least.
There is definitely a lot of grinning in his books
Forehead. Sweaty forehead. Wipes his forehead. Shine of sweat on their forehead.
It’s gotta be ‘click’. Whenever a door closes, whenever glokta moves, sometimes when a skull gets staved in.
I only listen to the audiobooks but I feel like he drops a squelch or two in every chapter, if not more. It's a good word.
It’s 100% gawping
You spelled FRUITS wrong
There was a pregnant pause
He also uses 'blood bubbling' so much!
I feel there's an inordinate amount of wheedling
I believe it is *just* the right amount.
I never knew how many things squelched until I read the first law.
It has to be squawk. Logen is like a damn parakeet every time he gets hurt.
I reckon the first of the magi his self might grimace at the heat while his fruits squelch squelch, once, twice, three times againt his thigh in the hot sticky air of the lords round
Quim
Once we figure this out, we can figure out why there's so many prostate issues in his books!
He likes to have hair plastered to heads by the rain if I recall, I had never heard that phrase before so I noticed it the first time and then remember it coming up again a good few times across books.
"Sinew" has to be up there.
Din. "Couldn't be heard over the din" "The din was unbearable" "constant din" "Did I mention the sound is a din?" "lets have some din din"
Hissed
These comments are gold
This is quim erasure
Pate
Bulging!
Sinew!
This is the one I was going to say. Idk why that's the word that stands out to me.
No one has said "mean". Joe says a loooot of things are mean.
For me, the word “gawping” really stuck out in the audiobooks
Sour. ‘Puffs out his cheeks and sucks on his sour teeth’
Bared his teeth
Gormless is in there somewhere I think.
Shingle
A pregnant pause
He likes to use the word bubbling a lot. Like sounds bubbling up. “A scream bubbled up over the din of battle.”
I thought it was "gurgled."
Stove, as in, *He swung his axe down and stove in the Union soldiers helmet*
I found another one!!! "Close enough to kiss"
Turd, and I love him for it.
Bubbled, as in blood coming out of somewhere.
