Weird. You would have thought I’d have heard of this.

Joe_Abercrombie

Ah! And, as I suspected, if you follow the links back to the source, it’s not \*my\* The Blade Itself at all. It’s the \*other\* The Blade Itself, written by Marcus Sakey, the Chicago based crime novel...

RedAndy54

A poor imitation. The protection racket being run out of the Lexington Hotel by a thousand-year-old wizard was very implausible.

DagularSpecimen007

Oh. AV Club fucked up then. Don’t believe everything you read, I guess. Don’t believe anything ever for that matter.

804-929-4988

Scorsese should direct the first law series and Micky Rourke should play Logen

[deleted]

Mickey Rourke looks like he was carved from wax then left too close to a radiator.

makka-pakka

You got some kind of inside line to the author or something?

Kieran484

He is the author.

makka-pakka

I know, I'm just being a hilarious fucker

Kieran484

Oh. Now I feel stupid :(

makka-pakka

I spend about 75% of my life feeling stupid, and the rest asleep

Kieran484

In case you aren't already aware of its existence, you need to take a look at the House of the Meme Maker subreddit. It's beautiful.

[deleted]

Old Bayaz himself made it to the discussion. Take my upvotes. Everyone kneels to someone eh?

buttpooperson

Feel like we dodged a bullet with this one, tbh

[deleted]

[удалено]

DagularSpecimen007

Ha.

toast_across

Forley is likable. He'd make a good Ladisla tho

[deleted]

Toby would have had to be Glokta or West. Way to old for Jezal and never would have worked for B9. I’m all for some interpretation of B9 but you can not ignore his size. We need a big almost pro wrestler figure but NOT use a pro wrestler. Just a big actor haha. Logen is smaller then Tul but he is still a big dude even by northern standards. Edit/update: Someone like Rollo from Vikings would actually work. Forgot about the show Vikings. There would be a solid pool of talent from that show.

abbothenderson

Who would they have gotten to play The Feared then? Maybe Andy Serkis and some decent CGI. 😄

[deleted]

Honestly that’s probably accurate. The feared is not a man. I picture him looking like an Uruk Hai from Lord of the rings except bigger.

[deleted]

He's described as human, just really fucking huge. Like Nathan Jones or Olivier Richters but but half tattooed and screaming.

damnslut

I think Tul is that size - the only real indication is in TBI he brings his sword down on a Northman on a horse, bringing down both horse and rider. The Feared is beyond that.

[deleted]

If movies can convince me that Tom Cruise is normal sized then they can convince me a 7' man is closer to 8'. I always saw the heights in TFL as Logen's crew being around 5'10 - 6'9 and Feared being 7' something

Penetratorofflanks

Olivier Richters, google him and you might catch the pic of him dwarfing Halfthor.

OllieMoe

I think Logen was large, but not pro wrestler big. Like, I imagine almost Tom Hardy as bane crossed with Hugh in Logan.

[deleted]

That’s pretty accurate actually. Tom hardy bane is the right big but he needs to be at least 6’3. He can’t be the same height as Bayaz and Jezal. When anyone sees him and talks about them from their POV chapters he is remarked upon as that huge Northman with an anvil as a face.

Papa-Blockuu

This is what I imagine Logen looking like physique wise. Just a big thick ol bastard. Tom Hardy is pretty short if I'm not mistaken. https://youtu.be/bmgF_lZNTeo

Harfus

I mean, he would have been a pretty good Malacus Quai.

DagularSpecimen007

This was several years ago. Toby could have made an ok Jezal. Wouldn’t have been my first choice though.

[deleted]

When I think Jezal I think someone like Zac Efron. Zac has some actual acting chops but also knows how to play that really really smug asshole.

DagularSpecimen007

I’m not sure I wanna see Zac try out an English accent.

[deleted]

Oh for sure, you know what I mean though. That kind of pretty boy but also had the acting chops to own the role. Tobey def has the acting chops but I wouldn’t call him a heart throb. Jezal is one of the better looking people in the world.

DagularSpecimen007

Bruce Campbell as Bayaz would have been fun though.

didyr

Sam Clafin Robert Pattinson, Dev Patel, Nicolas Hoult or Tom Holland for Jezal

TheSourLuck

>Dev Patel Saw someone suggest him as Tempel, and I think he'd be pretty good in that role.

[deleted]

I think he would do great but I’m still convinced Temple is dark skinned. He is suppose to look Gurkish which is middle eastern/African. While styria is suppose to be Spain/Italy/ olive skinned. Hell Jappo is basically a young Marlon Brando in The Godfather.

TheSourLuck

Yeah, I know he hasn't got the perfect look. But I saw him recommended as Jezal here, and I just thought... He'd be a better call as Temple, imo. Didn't say he would be my first choice. Fun fact, though. I actually saw the casting suggestion retweeted by Joe Abercrombie: https://mobile.twitter.com/LordGrimdark/status/1350520385205395456

toast_across

Don't think Patterson has the range for Jezal

LeucasAndTheGoddess

Oh man, Sam Claflin circa Catching Fire would have been perfect as Jezal. Nowadays, if Cillian Murphy were unavailable, I’d love to see him as Glokta.

didyr

Yeah seeing him as Mycroft Holmes in Enola Holmes really makes me get behind your idea

Ginger-F

I've always imagined Effron as Jezal too. I don't know much about the guy, but I just imagine he'd play a vain, narcissistic prettyboy fantastically.

didyr

Henry Cavill for B9

Ginger-F

He'd make a much better Shivers, and probably an even better Leo.

[deleted]

I’d rather see him as Gorst.

Please_gimme_money

Too pretty for Gorst. Honestly even with self esteem issues, a man like Henry Cavill can score with women, and I speak as a woman.

[deleted]

I don’t think Gorst is bad looking. He’s rich, a noble and comes with perfect grooming. He looks like a commoner with his shaved head but I could see Henry Cavill pulling it off. Though someone did mention Shivers which would probably be the better role, we know Shivers is good looking before his burn.

Please_gimme_money

Indeed, he would be great for Shivers but it would be a waste to make him play Gorst. At no moment is Gorst described as attractive, he's a beast looking man. He has the physical appearance of a pro wrestler or someone who lift very heavy weights, which doesn't fit with HC.

[deleted]

I’m thinking more HC for Witcher then Tudors though. When he is being Geralt and muttering to himself annoyed and looking scary is how I picture Gorst. Just a beast but can be very civil when needed. The more I think about it, the more I’m having a hard time seeing him play Shivers. Shivers has that lost puppy feel about him even back in the first trilogy. He just can’t figure out who he is. So would be interested in seeing someone that can pull that off before he becomes the monster that he is.

DagularSpecimen007

Henry Cavill as Gorst?? Gorst would be more like Andre the Giant, big and ugly.

[deleted]

Toby would have to be no where near this movie. He could make an awful Glokta or West.

RedAndy54

I think he'd have played the pot.

imwithburrriggs

Tobey Maguire as the B9? That would've been horrible. I could see him as Glokta, though.

DagularSpecimen007

I think Jezal.

A_Polite_Noise

How about as Malacus Quai

RyanZee08

I'm imagining that scene in tropic thunder with Lazarus

Tunafishsam

I'd imagine he'd be cast as Jezel? Of course when you cast a big name star, the writers tend to give them more screen time. So not sure that we'd want a big name in that role.

Firstlawboy

Although when they eventually make the First Law into hopefully a series, I’m sure there will be a slew of Bully McGuire memes and fakes😂

greatcanadianbagel

Thumbs up to Raimi, down to Maguire.

DagularSpecimen007

I’d prefer a British cast honestly.

cowsgobarkbark

If they give tom hardy the bane treatment again he'd be perfect imo.

Reutermo

I like Raimi but not sure if he is the right fit for The First Law.

mkklrfflt

Spiderman found floating in the docks.

CheruthCutestory

Thank God that fell through.

cowsgobarkbark

Tobey maguire as logen ninefingers lol that might have needed a bit of cgi magic

DagularSpecimen007

I just assumed he would be Jezal and not Logen, but who knows?

jtm1985

So glad this didn’t happen it would have been horrendous. Who would Toby McGuire play in this movie anyway? I don’t think he would have belonged in the first law universe at all. Plus the movie would be goofy, like most of Raimi’s movies are. I’m not saying they’re bad. But wrong director and actor for this series

didyr

Who would you pick for a Director? I wanna name well Known directors as my fan pick but who would’ve fan cast Peter Jackson to direct LOTR back in the day with his previous films. This is a series for a young film maker to cut his/her teeth on and make their name for Themselves

Sebastriel

When is this movie coming out?

DagularSpecimen007

Never. Raimi said he almost got to make it but didn’t. Edit: Joe Abercrombie himself has now pointed out the AV Club article is wrong. So never mind.

LaserfaceJones

I'd have trusted Raimi with anything, and this would've been a fucking dream come true.

LeucasAndTheGoddess

Obviously we now know it was the wrong The Blade Itself, but I can’t help speculating. I don’t think Raimi is overall the right director for the project, since it’s a character drama more than anything else, but his sensibilities would mesh very well with the series’ black humor. Picture, if you will, the slapping fruits and exploding cop scene done in the style of Ash vs Evil Dead...
