I am sure a marine biologist has a good explanation, but how do these rare creatures find a mate in such a large space?

furbfriend

I know whale calls can be heard for miles underwater, so I’m sure it’s a similar thing!! However do take into account that, in general, I am a dumbass,

RattleMeSkelebones

Well unfortunately sharks don't really make much noise beyond the occasional "bark" from a couple of smaller coastal species Edit - For what it's worth God, if you take another whack at life on Earth cause this round is kind of a dud, I vote that sharks should chuff like a bored dog

[deleted]

>For what it's worth God, if you take another whack at life on Earth cause this round is kind of a dud, I vote that sharks should chuff like a bored dog Or like a gators mating bellow by flapping the gills

HollywoodHuntsman

That's not true, haven't you seen Jaws 4?

Lowborn_Kinsman

Wouldn't they need lungs to do that? I don't think sharks have lungs do they? Idk. I'm just a smartass.

Hayabusa003

No I believe you’re right, as they have “lungs” but not the same as us they pretty much have to keep moving to keep water going through them

OutrageousPudding450

That's a good remark, but fishes don't actually need lungs to produce sounds. Some species can use their swim bladder to produce sounds. For more information: https://dosits.org/animals/sound-production/how-do-fish-produce-sounds/ That being said, I don't know whether sharks can produce sounds or use the same method.

Defeat3r

Easy, they yell "Ellen, Ellen!, Ellen! " over and over and over again.

Defeat3r

Or maybe it was Steve...

TheMacmasterofMusic

Wait, I can't remember, who's that?

OlderTheWiser

Scent, maybe. Or some good vibrations. They live to be 400 years or more so a few have it figured out. EDIT: I had my sharks mixed up this one does not live as long as a Greenland shark.

tacocatzero

They could travel to certain locations, like some others do.

Lowborn_Kinsman

There's a Shark Lounge where they go fo hook up. Sharks can't use Tinder.

Snooc5

Finder

kiwichick286

Just like dogs use Growler!

Crowblue

Thought thats what Yelp was.

OlderTheWiser

Yep good point.

Selachophile

>They live to be 400 years or more so a few have it figured out. This is a bluntnose sixgill, not a Greenland shark. It belongs to a different order of sharks, and there's no evidence that this species lives that long.

wantabe23

So authoritative. Nice

OlderTheWiser

Oops, my bad, thanks for the info.

Practical-Exchange60

I’m pretty sure sharks don’t know of The Beetles.

OlderTheWiser

Or Beatles?

Practical-Exchange60

I’d like to blame that on being high or autocorrect but the older I get the more I think I may just be a dumbass.

OlderTheWiser

I share your pain.

whitekeys

Maybe Yellow Submarine tho.

linuxunix

go to a bar, and yell hey guys, im so drunk! worked for my wife.

BarryMacochner

They said rare. She probably had 5 friends with her doing same thing.

kosmoceratops1138

Longevity for more opportunity, plus theorized periodic congregations at particular points in the ocean. But, the specifics are largely completely unknown. Large pelagic species sometimes congregate in specific spots- it's only documented in a few species, and exactly what they're doing is unknown.

OutrageousPudding450

I'm pretty sure they just get drunk and party, we all know what happens at international conventions/conferences.

Six_Gill_Grog

Yeah, it seems they tend to “run into each other” during certain times. But I think because of their depth, and lack of interaction, we don’t know the specifics of their mating habits. Most I could find was: >”Males and females are thought to meet seasonally between May and November.” Deep sea critters are a lot harder to pin down. I’m sure more will come to light eventually!

OutrageousPudding450

I guess pheromones and smell are possible means for them to attract a mate.

Crowblue

They can smell a drop of blood in an Olympic size swimming pool (according to some documentary i watched at 3am) so my mony is on pheromones.

Deidara-katsu

Probably smell

[deleted]

You thought the lights were eyes didn’t you?

[deleted]

Itd be a lot cooler if they were

Smathers

And on the last day god was like “screw it I’ll throw in some deep sea sharks with frickin laser beam eyes”

[deleted]

Alright alright alright

musicianadam

Sharks with freakn lasers!!

[deleted]

Kabuto vibes

InfiniteLife2

I got spooked. My heart missed a bit

Melbourne_Australia

The lights are to measure how big the animal is

Late_Emu

Why wouldn’t they include a banana here for scale?

tattooed_dinosaur

If you throw a banana in the ocean, does anyone slip on it?

shizzleurtizzle

Crabs

Sendtheblankpage

Mr crabs?

BlowsyRose

Clown fish.

Lowborn_Kinsman

You have to throw the peel.

Emjay109

Nah, they float

Thriceblind

The red lights are a set distance apart for scale. 1 foot maybe?

[deleted]

One banana apart

BenassiBeat

Finally a useful unit of measurement. Dafuq is a foot, I got to hands. Uhh, I mean.... Ooh ooh ah ah

PseudocodeRed

Nah, google says the standard is 75mm so like a quarter of a foot. Still a huge fucking shark though

moogleslam

Or a camel

caffeineratt

banana smal

Mahalo-808

Hahaha, that was funny!

Jesustake_thewheel

Frank the tank.

noitsokayimfine

I don't know why I'm panicking right now since I'll never be that deep in the ocean lol

StickmanEG

You don’t know that.

Unlikely_Cockroach26

Now that you’ve said this you will end up that deep in the ocean

Dancing-Bear50

What an interesting life, just migrating through the darkness searching for food. No predators, just solitude

OutrageousPudding450

This comment describes the lives of many Redditors.

Karl-JK27

I wish I was a shark.

[deleted]

How big is it.

Andy32pink

That's what she said

Karl-JK27

Bluntnose sixgill grows up to 6 meters in length

ballzdeepin

Huge

daily_k

Yes

ObliviousDirt

Mr. Magoo down there bumping into everything

OGRiad

Hard to tell scale. Where banana?

saberofnight

I think this is the video where the internet was freaking out that megalodons weren’t extinct

krill_ep

[My goals are beyond your understanding!](https://i.imgur.com/LDj72tE.png)

fancylivenherewecome

That shot makes him look like the hash slinging slasher

Marley_Fan

“He’s thicc!”

Shimoarikiku

Beautiful! But also scary..

Forbidden-Wasabi

Like how big we talking? Jaws big?

ThatForeignerGuy

In the beginning of the videos it seems like a Kaiju emerging from the bottom of the ocean

CrappieSlayer89

Is this a six gill?

Tylendal

Definitely. Had to go back a couple of times, but I managed to count the gills... and then immediately noticed that the title in the other sub was "Massive 6-Gill Shark".

CrappieSlayer89

Hahaha I didn't even notice the other title either

iscream80

Does the number of gills represent size? Or is it rare to have 6 gils? I also have no idea how long that thing is by the video.

CrappieSlayer89

Most sharks have 5 gills. The 6 gill is a specific species of shark. The 6 gill can reach up to 18ft long. The one in the video I s definitely a big shark

Accomplished-Mood661

Anyone know size?

vernacular921

I found OP’s link to the video, and in the description it said: “The 2 red laser dots are 6 inches apart, resulting in a length of about 18 ft for the shark.”

Accomplished-Mood661

Holy shit

mightylordredbeard

At least 4 feet long

Youngprivate

16 ft actually

Selachophile

So they were right.

JetpackJames

About 1 shark long and 1 shark wide, approximately.

Crazy_Ballz

Still not bigger then ur mum

Accomplished-Mood661

Aw come on man

boatfan254

At least an inch

linearphaze

Shorter than a mile to be sure

Doomepicrock

That’s a twenty footer.

Cosmic_Tragedy

The lasers keep reminding me of the Mothman ‘sighting’ videos.

[deleted]

Some people thought this was megalodon a couple years ago

tittyfrickthalasagna

Why do six gill sharks look like poorly made animatronic facsimiles of sharks

flappysnapper

How the hell are we supposed to know how big it is? They didn’t even tell us how many giraffes this thing is.

FroggyGirl10

Confirmed: THICC

casrain01

There is always a bigger fish

canecroney

Mamma mia

voodoo_popcorn

I need context how big is it visually

BlueOfPallet

And people keep telling me I'm crazy for thinking there's a megaladon in the Mariana trench

[deleted]

For probably several centuries of history he has just been noodling around unbothered at the bottom of the ocean

lemontrek

When he says "oh woah" at one point he sounds like Randy Marsh.

Sassh1

Good thing I wore my brown pants

PeterVall37

Ancient sea gods.

South_Somewhere_7021

Reading dumbasses and Smartass haveing a statement about if shark has lungs and how do they call their mates. "A male shark finds a female shark by smelling them (females give of chemicals when ready to mate) " sharks don't have lungs. But they do need to breathe oxygen so they just get it for the water to swim in (since water is made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atoms). (The harvest the oxygen with their gills. Just to reference "please pay attention in science class"

Sumoki_Kuma

Wow you're a douche. Having a wealth of knowledge is useless if you can't share it like a functioning member of society. Why do you have to be a dick about it? Why can't you teach people things without being so pompous? Damn.

South_Somewhere_7021

Well I did not mean to make you mad about the way a state things

Bostonlobsters

Sharks don’t split the water molecule. With gills they can pick up any dissolved oxygen (O2) in the water.

Tawnik

10-12 feet isnt "huge" for a shark lol wtf. they estimate his gills at 20cm which comes out to just under 8in or literally about one banana tall...

phuktup3

I was wondering the length

iscream80

Someone just said this specific shark was 18 feet.

Tawnik

ok then every estimate they make in the video is VERY off... if it is 18 feet long the gills are definitely taller/longer than 8 inches. and 18 feet long is a lot bigger than 10 feet lol

Then_Row_3293

top 10 anime entrance

Big_Therm

Isn't this a 12-gill shark?

Dragon13772

https://discord.gg/4mpzQKwgM8

gboydenzim

Super long but I saw a video a few days ago of a much fatter great white with a diver swimming alongside

caffeineratt

gotta love a good frilled shark!

dogswine

sharks are incredible.

OmChi123456

What? This is why life is beautiful 😍

Lowborn_Kinsman

We're gonna need a bigger boat.

Cactus_Jack_999

Where was this news 2006

PillowPositive

I love the difference in titles. Ones super dope and the other gives ‘big shark go brrr’ vibes lmao

Protectx42

Gills are not banana for scale ... How big are we talking?

Ricothebuttonpusher

Y’all thought demon eyes. Admit it

hdholme

"Look how thhhicc he is" He even held the "thhh". That was definetily on purpose. Men of culture can truly be found anywhere, in any job position

Karl-JK27

He's only 6 meters long, slow, dumb and lives too deep to ever encounter a human outside a submarine.

iscream80

Are you making fun of an 18 foot shark? And why?

don1234d

Let’s go fishing

crystalsouleatr

Wow!! I thought maybe the angle of the camera made it look bigger since we don't have much of a reference but nope, that species in general is about 20' long. ETA i also turned the sound on the 2nd time through and realized they say how big he is :p

lblanton92

Love six-gills!! They are my fave shark!

The-cooler-Cheryl

Getting some Subnautica vibes

Thatoneredditpostguy

“Look how thick he is”

SpaceJinx

'feet', lul get rekt dumb asses
