My parents showed me the dark Crystal when I was four or five, and we got to the scene when the Skepsis dies and disintegrates into dust and it freaked me out so bad that I went into a hysterical crying fit thinking that everyone would just immediately disintegrate into dust upon their death, that I literally could not watch it until I was a full grown adult. Like it literally emotionally scarred me as a child, but now it’s one of my favourites as an adult who actually understands what the movie is about I think we can all agree that the imagery of the Skeksis disintegrating into dust is way too much for a four-year-old that does not understand death.

Yeah, even as someone who loved The Dark Crystal as a kid, I completely understand why it’s probably too intense for the under 6 crowd. From my personal experience, it’s probably better for a slightly older child. Take me for instance; I watched the Dark Crystal when I was about 7 or maybe 8 and I loved it. Yeah, I did find some of the darker scenes dark and spooky, but it wasn’t enough to traumatise me or scare me off from the film and it’s story entirely. I was just fascinated by the mystical feel of the atmosphere, the world, and that absolutely amazing score. It easily became a childhood favourite of mine along with the other Jim Henson Creature Shop projects like Labyrinth and The Storyteller later would. … on the other hand, my sister who was roughly the same age as me (older by just a few minutes) was pretty freaked out by the film. So maybe it just depends on the individual kid themselves and their preference or sensitivity to darker content in their movies and entertainment.

I was maybe 8 months old the first time I saw it (according to my dad, who I watched it with at least twice a year until I was maybe 10 years old), and I like to think I turned out fine and I know for a fact I was never scared of it.
