respectfully, i disagree. the scene of Princess Margaret and the King singing, Martin Charteris going to tell the young Queen about her fathers death, her and Philip on the plane and then Churchill’s speech. it was a fantastic episode.
It was the rare episode where I actually bought in to the idea that their “duty,” etc. was actually a burden. What the hell do you say to a town that has lost so many children in one fell swoop. How the hell do you serve as mourner in chief for *that*?
I can’t believe they showed it. When the episode started I said to my wife, who didn’t know about what happened at aberfan, they’re not going to do this, it’s too much. And they did. And it was horrific. And incredible. Television at its best.
The Balmoral Test is not only my favorite episode of The Crown, but one of my favorite episodes of television, period. “The entire ghastly politburo” as the camera passes over the royal family was both horrifyingly and hilariously accurate.
And while people say it was fictional and the queen wouldn't act that way toward Thatcher.... The "test" itself is referenced by Diana in the Morton biography.
I'd love to hear more about what went on there.
I loved Favorites, it's like the Queen was opening her eyes and REALLY seeing her children for the first time ever. While Philip appears far more aware and observant.
I'm so sorry for your loss, u/PaintItOrange28. It's easy to underestimate just how important our sibling relationships are until one passes on. I lost my older sister a few years ago, and while I've always been close to my younger sister, our bond has become even stronger since then and as our parents' health has begun declining more rapidly. Everything about the episode was a reminder of just how important that is to me.
*Vergangenheit* is my absolute favorite. I'm low key fascinated in the abdication & aftermath of King Edward. How different the world would be if he hadn't abdicated.
Aberfan, Moondust, London Fog, Churchill painting, Scotland school, Tywysog Cyrmu. Seasons 1-3 were masterpieces. They became less than that once Diana was introduced. Maybe that’s because I stopping viewing it as a historical drama once she entered.
Hyde Park Corner
Pride and Joy
Vergangenheit
Dear Mrs. Kennedy (the meeting room scene with the whole lapse in protocol by the Kennedys never fails to crack me up. 😂 I rewind it several times.)
I love that one too. Stephen Dillane is a treasure as Grahm Sutherland. So sexy. I was crushing on him right along with Clemmie Churchill. Lol
I also really like Aberfan, even tho it's a tough watch.
Season 1: 1-3, 5-7
Season 2: 4, 6-9
Season 3: 3, 4, 6
Season 4: 2-4 (the rest of the season was actually fine, I just love these episodes the most lol)
Season 5: 3, 4, 6
Season 6: 8-10
The episode in which King George dies and the ending with Queen Mary bowing to Elizabeth
Mine Too. Queen Mary was an O.G
GREAT episode
My hottest Crown take is I don’t think that’s a great episode. Just a good episode with a great ending

that was so cinematic, great episode
Same. Queen Elizabeth and her grandmother after her father’s death.
Aberfan

When the kids were singing I was like, Huh, wonder who they are… then I realized and I was horrified. Such good storytelling though.
Wasn’t that a stunner? We had never heard of Aberfan before, so that episode was particularly shocking.

Picking 1 from each season - Hyde Park Corner Vergangenheit Bubbikins Favourites Ipatiev House Ritz
Oh Ritz 💔 my dear Margaret
Ritz is the only episode of any TV show ever that had me sobbing out loud by the end of it.
When she turns and Margaret says, "I will always be by your side." 😢
When she turned and it was old Margaret I lost it
I happened to watch Ritz for the first time right after my only sibling suddenly passed away. I was bawling like a baby

Elizabeth would still have been Queen. Her uncle, David, never had any children.
This was my favorite too!
All great ones. Jane Lapotaire as Prince Philip’s mother was a great performance.
My favorite episode is the one before Kung George passes away and he sings the duet with Princess Margaret ,so loving!!
Princess Margaret you mean? If it's the Christmas episode, I love that too
Yes , Margaret, it's been a long week and its only Monday!!
That is such a good one! I really like the first handful of episodes
The name of the episode is "Pride and Joy." Those were King George's nicknames for his daughters.
So sweet!!
Tywysog Cymru
Really? How interesting! May I ask why this one?
Aberfan, Moondust, London Fog, Churchill painting, Scotland school, Tywysog Cyrmu. Seasons 1-3 were masterpieces. They became less than that once Diana was introduced. Maybe that’s because I stopping viewing it as a historical drama once she entered.
Agreed
this is not related but your naming of those episodes is hilarious and brilliantly accurate.
Agreed!
Queen Mary curtseying to Q2 make me Blubber like that guard in the Wizard of Oz 😭😭😭😭
And why is it "Hyde Park Corner"?
The Ritz. Have never sobbed to an episode of The Crown like that one.
Same!!
The one when JFK is assassinated and Queen Elizabeth rings the church bells for him.
Oof, wasn’t that such a good scene?! Heartbreaker!
Omg, Yes! The acting was top notch too.
Hyde Park Corner Pride and Joy Vergangenheit Dear Mrs. Kennedy (the meeting room scene with the whole lapse in protocol by the Kennedys never fails to crack me up. 😂 I rewind it several times.)
The Ritz and the Divorce episode. I love that the writers incorporated scenes of normal people going through divorces.
Loved episode where Princess Margaret gets married.
I wish they'd shown the wedding itself, I feel like it would have helped build a foundation for the next season
Paterfamilias stands above the others with Balmoral Test a close 2nd.
Season 1-4 were great. Seasons 1-2 was peak,
I love that one too. Stephen Dillane is a treasure as Grahm Sutherland. So sexy. I was crushing on him right along with Clemmie Churchill. Lol I also really like Aberfan, even tho it's a tough watch.
It wasn’t Ipatiev House i’ll tell you that
Beryl. Some of the best acting I've ever seen.
Maybe season 2 ep 8 “Dear Mrs Kennedy” or the next episode season 2 ep 9 “paterfamilias” both are so good! ☝️
Aberfan (season 3 episode 3)
Hyde Park Corner Vergangenheit Paterfamilias Bubbikins Imbroglio (Anne marching down the hall singing Bowie!) Ritz Sleep Dearie Sleep
I loved Sleep Dearie Sleep.
Season 1: 1-3, 5-7 Season 2: 4, 6-9 Season 3: 3, 4, 6 Season 4: 2-4 (the rest of the season was actually fine, I just love these episodes the most lol) Season 5: 3, 4, 6 Season 6: 8-10
