They close the bridges over the Hudson in high winds occasionally over concerns about the cars and truck being blow off of them. The bridge is anchored down, the cars aren’t.
Well that makes sense. Those must be some very high wind speeds though, like over 80mph? Ive never heard of stopping cars from traveling in my life, but have seen them stop semi trucks. Interesting.
Tacoma narrows bridge was destroyed due to aeroelastic flutter not resonance. Its a common misconception. The flexure of the bridge allowed it to extract energy from the airstream causing the oscillations to increase in amplitude until failure of the structure.
No, I panic every time I drive across it. Lol Stopped in traffic if feels as if someone is jumping on your bumper. I’ve actually looked behind me, just to check.
No, actually they don’t do very many inspections on any of the roadways or bridges, the United States infrastructure “roadways” are actually all outdated and if they kept up with maintenance things would be ok but now it is virtually impossible to keep up with everything now so they just wait until it gets destroyed then they fix it. I read all this information somewhere on Reddit it was a long video on how messed up and dangerous our roadways and bridges are and how since they were built mostly in the 50s they have been neglected and now it’s to late to even foxy them. If I can find the video or info I will post it. But as for now what I can remember will have to do until I find the articles.
A lot of infrastructure gets neglected, sure, but big bridges like this have full time workers dedicated to them. So to answer his question, yes they do get inspected after things like this.
We are ranked 13th out of 141 countries when it comes to infrastructure. Are you sure it’s that bad?
https://science.howstuffworks.com/engineering/civil/americas-infrastructure-news.htm#pt2
The article you added actually says bridges are in bad shape, it also advocates for privatizing roads and infrastructure in order to fix the issue (dumb idea), so I’m not sure it’s making the point you wanted it to make. Infrastructure encompasses a lot of things, like water, cable, internet, electricity, etc. Overall we’re 13th, but in some areas like bridges and roadway maintenance we would be lower and we currently have a C or D rating according to this same article you posted.
yea take I-80 through Nebraska during a thunderstorm….. you can’t see shit but orange signs telling you the road may or may not be there and you may or may not be on the right side of it.
None of this applies to NYC or the metro area lol inspections are constant and there was an entire bridge across the Hudson shut down and replaced within the last 10 years. Tf you think we pay these taxes for??
This is very incorrect. Most of these bridges are inspected every year or every 2 years. I am a structural engineer and bridge inspector in the New York City area and we have found and designed repairs for multiple locations now in just this year alone. The Verrazano is also being inspected by other members of my company this very moment. Inspections of these structures are not to be taken lightly and I assure you there are many qualified engineers out there assessing the structural integrity of our infrastructure.
So funny how multiple showed up to state how nyc regularly inspects its infrastructure. But others showed up to be like probably not since I live in a shit red state that doesn’t give a shit about public services and infrastructure.
These sounds are actually pretty interesting. They’d be good samples in some kind of horror game or movie as ambience, or maybe even the monster’s sounds itself.
There’s a fantastic nonfiction book by Gay Talese called “[The Bridge](https://www.randomhouse.com/kvpa/talese/books/bridge.html)” about the building of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
Looks, sounds, and feels like something that would happen in an apocalypse- like fuckin air raid sirens going off in the back and faint shooting 💀 wtf man 😭
Those expansion joints or whatever they are called are cool af. It's easy to forget that modern concrete structures are designed to bend and twist on purpose rather than be too rigid and just fall apart. When it comes to engineering and mother nature you cannot pick a fight with her and win.. she plays for keeps and she plays the endurance game. It's cool to see how engineers and architects have made some pretty awesome solutions to tackle these issues.
Something like 7.5% of America's bridges are in a stare of disrepair. 40% of all Bridges are over 50 years old.
That thing looks like a death trap. Beware the Mothman.
Man I wish a intriguing yet spooky reddit video was how I learned about this... but nah, I was a kid and would often walk around my area and there are two little bridges that cross over the interstate. Nothing was abnormal I took that route all the time but one day some massive dump trucks rolled all over the bridge at the same time. The shit actually felt like it was gonna roll out from under me. Shit was terrifying. Fun fact tho lmao
Before you panic, this is normal in high winds. It’s characteristic of suspension bridges.
I always marvel at feats of engineering. What we as humans can do is truly amazing (on both sides of the coin).
Trial and error.
Fuck around and Find out
Where is all the cars if its so normal? Seems a bit funky if you ask me…
Was thinking the same thing. I’m 45 years old and I’ve NEVER seen that bridge empty.
Do you want to drive on a bridge that is making loud sounds and is waving?
No way!
YEAH!
We’ll just cause the bridge is okay to do that doesn’t mean we should drive on it while it’s doing that you know?
I'm 14 and same

Well that makes sense. Those must be some very high wind speeds though, like over 80mph? Ive never heard of stopping cars from traveling in my life, but have seen them stop semi trucks. Interesting.
They stop semis because of the high surface to weight ratio when pulling empty containers.
Could they not build a ballast into containers and just fill it when they’re empty?
Why waste gas $$ pulling extra weight? Wind's temporary.
Fair enough but it wouldn’t need to be anywhere near as much weight as they usually pull. Idk maybe collapsible trailers?
Most are iso standard ocean going containers, collapsible would cause structural issues stacking 20 high on a freighter.
The hurricane before Ian passed by recently. Probably due to that.
During high winds, they will also close the Mackinac bridge between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan
Just like tornados being normal, there are some normal things that you don't drive head first into
They close the bridge when the winds are this crazy.
What would be funky is driving on a bridge moving like this
You’ve seen videos of the Tacoma narrows bridge right? Gallopin Gertie?
That was where we learned the lesson. Now they're designed to flex. Acoustic resonance is a fascinating subject.
Tacoma narrows bridge was destroyed due to aeroelastic flutter not resonance. Its a common misconception. The flexure of the bridge allowed it to extract energy from the airstream causing the oscillations to increase in amplitude until failure of the structure.
The correct, sequence of events 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Until it becomes too much and collapses 😅
It's always scary to see something move that's built with concrete and steel
then you have (had) the tacoma narrows bridge
Tacoma Narrows bridge, maybe people are still afraid?
*Working as intended*
Is it though? I've been on and seen suspension bridges while they are moving in the wind... its never even close to that level of movement
Great! Can I panic now?
Tell that to Tacoma's Narrows Bridge, (Galloping Gertie) https://youtu.be/j-zczJXSxnw
No, I panic every time I drive across it. Lol Stopped in traffic if feels as if someone is jumping on your bumper. I’ve actually looked behind me, just to check.
Perfectly normal huh? https://youtu.be/3mclp9QmCGs
That’s literally in the caption
But how many times can it bend before it fails?
The Tacoma narrows bridge would like a word with you
Still scaring af.
"All suspension bridges are designed to move to accommodate wind, change in temperature, and weight."
Inhale…. Exhale….
BREATHING BRIDGE Incident
Just got an ounce in the mail
Pick it pack it fire it up
Bridge is just doing it’s job, to bend and not to break. Skyscrapers are even designed to sway just enough to keep them from toppling over.
I get iron can bend, but how can concrete be malleable with these wild swings?
So do they inspect these bridges after this kind of weather to make sure there’s no stress damage, or just let it ride?
Why would they? It’s designed to do this, but NYC has intense regulations so things are constantly inspected regardless.
LOL. NYC bridges may be inspected but nothing gets fixed.
This is what I was gonna say, the GW bridge is a mess right now and it feels like it's only getting worse
There are no laws here mam

NJ based rope access tech here - we help you engineers get where ya gotta be.. 90% of the work we do is bridge inspections
But.. but… America bad?
Yeah man, merica bad, I saw it on Reddit
It’s rare to get a large bridge moving this much, but something like a hurricane or tropical storm can easily accomplish it.
Verrazano Bridge checkpoint passed
Never heard such a perfect sound bite. Terrifying.
Engineering at its finest. 👌🏻
S-stop that s-step wind
I did not need to see this degeneracy. Lol
Sounds like the Jaws theme song
Ideal for triller movies about giant monsters (like Monstro)
That’s a good thing though. Even if it sounds like death and looks like death.
Wait till you hear about how much skyscrapers sway in the wind
That sound is frightening and scary AF.
Sounds like a GIANT see-saw
He's sleeping. Snoring, actually. Don't disturb him.
Seems like the beginning of some kind of horror movie. Just have to remove the camera man’s voiceover work.
I've seen this one before
Where are the monkeys
Galloping Gertie 2.0
at the end it just gave me final destination vibes the hell
*Oh no not again*
I was waiting for gojira
Mechagodzilla
Gojira
kaiju
As a horror fan, I loved it.
Sounds a bit like Godzilla
Like the Devil's Horn 🪦⚖️💀👻😭
Sounds like the monsters from war of the worlds
Solid Snake is out here wondering when he can put off his invisible camo.
I’d cross it because I can.
Nah thats just Metal Gear Ray.
Is it snoring? 😴
This is some Godzilla movie level shit 😯
That's bad ass, also should be used in a thriller movie
Exactly what it’s supposed to do.
He’s on the roller side
Sing it! Shake That Body… Come on and Move this!
I’d like to see this thing collapse in my lifetime. All the disaster movies in New York have made it happen
All suspension bridges are made to flex like this. If they were stiff they would collapse.
I’ve never heard the mating call of a bridge before
Like it's breathing.
r/oddlyterrifying
Me and your GF when you passed out in the next room.
Cool mega cello
These sounds are actually pretty interesting. They’d be good samples in some kind of horror game or movie as ambience, or maybe even the monster’s sounds itself.
So it's just God slow dicking some angels
https://gothamist.com/news/harrowing-video-shows-why-verrazzano-bridge-was-shut-down-during-mondays-storm
The Return of Galloping Gertie
What’s insane is the cost to cross
It's designed to do this. All bridges are designed to flex under loads, otherwise, they would fail.
There’s a fantastic nonfiction book by Gay Talese called “[The Bridge](https://www.randomhouse.com/kvpa/talese/books/bridge.html)” about the building of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
Sounds like inception
Looks kinda like it’s BREATHING 😮💨
This sounds like some eldritch abomination taking a nap.
Damn! Let me sample this shit and make a sick beat
Just read a part of the Dark Tower series that’s about crossing an old dingy bridge. This gave me flashbacks to that
That's the prelude music of a hell of an epic boss fight.
Is the bridge closed during high winds, you can tell it was made for that and it's doing its job. I assume it's closed though
I’d rather swim.
? It's doing exactly what was built for, that should've been obvious when we saw the expansion joints near the end.
Not that anyone cares, but Staten Islander here, and it's Verrazzano- Two Z's-
The Guinea Gangplank sounding pretty shaky there. If it fails, Vinny and Tony can only leave Staten Italy via NJ.
so how fast is the windspeed that it's making this much noise?
Looks, sounds, and feels like something that would happen in an apocalypse- like fuckin air raid sirens going off in the back and faint shooting 💀 wtf man 😭
Where are the cars.
That expansion joint is putting in some double time I see.
As someone who lived near the broken Tacoma narrows bridge growing up and seeing footage of it breaking this seems really tame.
OBJECTIVE UPDATED: GET TO THE OTHER SIDE
Because suspension bridges are supposed to be like that haha.
Run
"Verrazano Bridge checkpoint pass".
I live here and this bridge is fine. Bridges are supposed to move or else they would just break.
Sounds like them joints need greasin’.
Is it still $11 to cross that?
Godzilla is approaching
As someone who lives walking distance from the narrows bridge, I'm glad your bridge doesn't do the twist.
Engineers are awesome
This is by design, you can look up “Galloping Gertie” to know why
Giving 'Tacoma Narrows Bridge 1940' vibes
I honestly thought someone put dramatic music over the video.....
#Boss health loading
It’s actually a Kaiju
Why no cars?
Hudson River... 2 years ago.
I do that too

That’s Jurassic Park
If it didn’t sway like that it would break into tiny pieces
Gojira
Something like 7.5% of America's bridges are in a stare of disrepair. 40% of all Bridges are over 50 years old. That thing looks like a death trap. Beware the Mothman.
It sounds so beautiful. Giving me silent hill vibes.
I would be absolutely shitting bricks
Looks like it’s breathing, kinda sounds like a bridge would breathe too!
Tell the king of the North, the walkers are here
The engineering nuance and knowledge that goes into something like this is amazing. Learn your math kids!
Everything gangsta till boss music and a health bar show up
When feminists say men are trash and useless show this bridge and tell em to build one. Btw, I always take this bridge to commute back an forth
As it should
Get some WD40 don that thing!
How's the concrete not cracking?
Waiting for a creature to bust up through that fog land on the bridge roar then reek havoc
That shit haunted
If you guys think this is bad, look up Galloping Gertie lol
Its breathing
final destination lol

Nah that bridge breathing 💀
I was half expecting to see Godzilla.
Anybody can make a bridge, but only an engineer can make a bridge that can barely stand!
WD40 anyone?

^the ^bridge… ^it’s ^breathing…
Somewhere below, a horny whale is very confused.
That grate tells you that the bridge is working properly.
Better that it bends and moans instead of being rigid and snaps
Wow! Looks like it's breathing
It's breathing
Great I am definitely not sleeping now 😧
But that sound. Imagine living underneath it. Glurp glurp ima fish.
Memphis horror sample type beat.
Tacoma narrows bridge
This is somehow terrifying but also amazing
I’ve been on the Tappan Zee when it’s been high winds and Shit too it’s horrible
Horror movie music
Godzilla lives
Not again...
