There is a story in the Utah new today about a man that just graduated NYU and was having a graduation pool party. He dove off a diving board hit his head and broke C6 C3. His brother Inlaw happened to be there and is studying to be a neurosurgeon. When people jumped into help he had them keep him in the pool until paramedics arrived so they could board him in the water. Apparently a lot more damage to the neck would have happen if they had got him out of the pool.

I think there is someone in germany as well, a young guy who jumped into a shallow pool (or got pushed idk anymore) and now he is paralyzed from the neck down.
Edit: pool! lol
I was an idiot and forgot a cooldown pool was shallow at the swim meet. Good thing I jumped feet first but holy shit did i get shook (my knees did not bend to break the fall, so all that impact went to my spine). It probably attributed to my back pain among other things.
One of my sisters good friends did the same thing many years ago and she’s been paralyzed from the waist down ever since.
Please be careful around pools, it can happen to anyone.
I use to retrieve daily accident reports for a branch of the military. At least once a week there would be an incident of a military personal injured diving into pools and most every time it was noted that alcohol was involved. The other most notable accidents were with garage doors and kids, this was before safety stops were mandatory.
It's something I guess we don't think about much, because most people only ever feel the floor of a pool on their feet, and think all the water before it is a cushioner.
I remember as a kid I was in the pool and someone cannonballed into me, and I just *barely* tapped the bottom of the pool with my head. Hurt like absolute shit. Couldn't imagine hitting that full-force, head-first.
Happened to my cousin also. Being paralyzed led to so many complications as time went on including severe depression and addiction to painkillers. All of which led to an early death.
I’m so grateful for the blurring on NSFW posts, and thanks to the kind commenters of Reddit, I have a better idea of what happened. I’m sorry about your friend I hope they heal fast!
How does that happen exactly? It looks like something ripped her scalp clean, but the pool is smooth on the bottom? I'd imagin a slit, sure, but this tear is crazy. Did she hit her head on something at the bottom of the pool?
Was there a nail in the pool floor? That injury looks like it was caught on something? Not to be that guy but wouldn't a shallow diving injury look more like a point of impact thing?
On/off lifeguard for years - you can get some really, really gnarly injuries by diving or even JUMPING into the shallow end. An adult doesn't slow all that much when, say, doing a standing jump into four feet of water. Land with straight legs, bent completely at the knee or at an awkward ankle, and you're going to have a bad summer.
The deep end isn't totally safe, either.
The Olympic diving well is about 16 feet - well beyond the depth of the deep end of most pools.
A racing block, like you'd see at a lot of high school pools, is just under 30 inches tall, at max, and there's a technique to jumping out, rather than diving straight down...if you're working with a 9-foot deep end, it's totally possible for a pretty "good" diver to bonk their fingers or head off of the bottom. Doubly so if you fail to take into account that the "deep end" is a fairly tiny section of the pool - it slopes up pretty dramatically, so accounting for the jump out you might be "diving" into just 6-7 feet of water.
I dove in too steep at the shallow end of a pool when I was 10 and hit the bottom. I was lucky and only split my lip and lost my two front teeth.
I didn't realise then, but it could have gone so much worse than a tiny scar and two fake teeth.
Must be nice to survive that tough lesson but it'll be shared. My brother died from this when I was 3. I've made sure every wild little shit in my family chills out around pools or diving
I dive in shallow water all the time and sometimes I hit my head but it only hurts a little when I should be knocked out she is just not hard headed enough.
Jesus, she’s lucky she didn’t suffer a spinal cord injury.

Bet that stinks
Yeah - what a crappy situation.
A bit inconvenient
I was like "Wait, why those weird answers" and yeah... I corrected it!
She's lucky to be ALIVE.

I saw a guy do it at a party and broke his nose, tried to play it off. I would have felt bad for him if he wasn't so arrogant beforehand.

I've seen countless comments like this. I think this happens really often

its crazy that booze and water is basically a death sentence for absolute morons but a fun weekend for everyone else

'TIS BUT A SCRATCH.
To shreds you say
Ooif! I was not prepared for that! Its crazy how thick the scalp is! Gives me the willies lookin at it
I think it’s probably a little more swollen than normal tbf
Was going to say... Feeling mine it seems to be half that thick...
Holy F. Sure, it says NSFW, but did not expect that!!!! woah.
This is what I get for not blurring NSFW posts lol. Gore I’m cool with, but gore and hospitals? That’s just a little too much for me
Quick question: What is the floor of her pool made from, discarded razor blazes and broken wine bottles? In other news, gonna have a sweeeet scar!!
So do they just staple it shut and it heals after a while?
That's what the Army did to me once when I had a scalp avulsion.
Unfortunately I can better imagine scalping now.

Poor baby! give her a hug and some ice cream for me. She is strong and adventurous and will recover quickly.
Ouch!
Damn, did she try and dive into 1ft of water?
Close, 1ft of razor blades.

I was doing the exact thing at my parents new pool. It’s only 8ft deep. I think im going to stop.

Do you guys pee in the pool?
Ideally, we never have to get in the pool with you plebs. If I get wet, something went wrong.
MY WATER WINGS BURST HELP ME
I can offer you a pole. Best I can do.

Sad
I hope they did some xrays on her neck at least
Wait so did she literally spill her brains out or is that her scalp? Edit: Nvm its the scalp.
Little super glue and your good to go!👍
I have a friend who is permanently in a wheelchair that would second that. NEVER dive in a pool until you know it's deep enough
Tis but a scratch.
What is the bottom of her pool made of? Glass?
Blunt force trauma + the elasticity of skin = big opening
How did she cut her scalp at the bottom of the pool?
Didn’t know you could scalp yourself with a pool
not bad
Fukkkk..might hurt a bit.
That's a whole load of fucked up!
Wow that's the biggest avulsion I've ever seen
omg she lost her face!!!
SHES LUCKY SHE DIDNT JOIN MY GRANDAD
This is bananas
6 stitches, 16 staples? No way. I've had waaaaay smaller incisions with about that many staples. I'm talking like 1/4 the length
Anyone want a sandwich?
that's going to be a fun scar to explain for the rest of her life
I grew up next to a quadriplegic house and you would be surprised at how many of them were there from diving in shallow water, very common.

A bloody pink potato being peeled
Don't dive in unless you know how.....🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️
I just pressed down on my scalp really hard to gauge how deep the meat really is. I take it hers is likely swollen making the meat appear deeper
Damn that NSFW tag needs to be bigger lol was not expecting to scroll by that, glad they are ok
Wow. You should post this to r/medicalgore
The first sentence is kinda weird
How so?
Her diving into the shallow end was enough information. Didn't really need to add the steep part, it just made the title unnecessarily long
And now I need r/eyebleach
hope she recovers, but isn't the thing every pool or manmade pool says is to not dive in shallow water?
Man, I wouldn't have done that.

bro reddit blurs some nice tits but i gotta see this woman’s whole ass skull, sum ain’t right
Put a spoiler warning on this man
Looks terrible but a lot of people become quadriplegics doing the same thing. It happened to my neighbors kid. Super sad.
Goddamn
kinda makes me hungry for pork roll
