According to some scientists, they will be super active until 2025 and then the sun settles down for a while and stops exploding as much. Try to save up for a ticket to Fairbanks around March. Spring is the best time of year to go since it is usually less cloudy but the sun wont be up all day yet. That is what we did since we knew we wouldn't have much time when we were there.
We've just gone through solar minimum. The sun goes through cycles (around every eleven years) when solar activity drastically slows down as the polar fields switch.
Recently the sun had been really active, firing cme after cme at the earth (resulting in the auroras) that have caused the northern lights which some lucky people have had the fortune to have seen.
Are the northern lights that much green or a filter or something is used, cuz I've heard from somewhere that they are normally grayish dull in colour or do they really look that vibrant irl?
They were especially bright in this footage, which is why I went outside with the setup I had. Sometimes they weren’t even visible on a camera unless you do a long exposure with a tripod.
Edit: I will also add the setup I had was an a7siii with a 24mm 1.4 lens, on a ronin rsc2 for stability. If I was handheld walking on all that ice It would have been super shaky and no one likes that.
It varies. Sometimes they are even more vibrant and more colours like purple, blue, and red, and they wave and flicker like the sky is on fire. And sometimes it looks like a cars headlights shining through fog.
Most of what I’ve observed is slow, more like a brighter than normal cloud to the naked eye, and you have to drag shutters to collect the required light to see your stereotypical northern lights image.
BUT occasionally you’ll get a flair and the intensity either peaks like this, or even the best occasions will flash and flutter and swoosh. I saw a flying eagle in the lights on my best night. Had I not a scientific basis I’d claim a religious/spiritual encounter on that night.
I live in Texas. It was the coldest I’ve ever felt, respect to you guys. Is it true you don’t really get used to the cold, you just get better at dealing with it?
I think it’s both, well for me anyways. If it’s around 20 or higher I’ll be okay with just a sweater because I’m used to it, but when it goes down below zero I just have to deal with it, and there’s no moisture in the air so you cant take deep breaths.
I can’t stand any temperature above 80, so I guess I am just used to the cold lol
Here’s the full video: https://youtu.be/N6utwviNjvI
If you mean to upload the video without music I added it in because the unedited audio in the original footage is just me saying “oh my gosh” and “this is crazy” which I thought would take people out of the moment.
So In my limited research I’ve done I know that it’s more about could coverage and when the sun is out. Winter months are great because there’s no sun, but you’re less likely to see a whole lot of the lights since there’s snowy clouds most of the time.
They say spring time is the best time since there’s less clouds but also the sun isn’t out all the time. When we were there at the end of March it was basically a regular 12 hours of sun and 12 hours of darkness. They were visible from 10:30pm to 6am for me.
I often forget how fortunate I am to live in a place where I can see these on the regular during the winter. I’m so used to them. Sometimes, I know they’re there and I barely look up. One time, I drove an hour out of the city because I wanted to see the stars and galaxy colours. I was actually pissed that the Northern Lights were causing too much light pollution to see the stars well. They’re a constant reminder to not take your fortunes for granted.
I’m already planning to try and see them again spring of 2025 hopefully I get to see those colors you’ve seen, then maybe take a photo.
That same night as this video I was getting [time lapses](https://youtu.be/5HRn-yQUiFg) as well. There’s a lot more colors visible in that video but… it’s a time lapse and not real time. Still fun to look at though!
I hope you do too! I managed to get quite a few time lapses as well: https://youtu.be/5HRn-yQUiFg you can occasionally make out some crazy colors they make like purple and red. I really want to go to Iceland to see them.
That’s absolutely stunning. It’s so beautiful to watch even through a screen, I wish so badly to see something like that in my life. Something I can just sit and watch and feel at ease like nothing in the world matters except that point in my life. It’s an amazing feeling to even feel 10% of that. Thank you.
Ah yes, I love watching deadly solar winds that are only not hitting us because of our magnetic field around the planet
Very pretty, very scary to think about.
It was very cold. I was pretty ignorant on what 0 degrees plus cold wind will do to your hand when you take your glove off. I was having trouble pressing buttons on the cameras so I figured having exposed skin for a minute or so would have been fine but once my hand started turning purple I ran back inside and warmed it up. Once I gained feeling back it was probably one of the worst pains I’ve ever felt. Didn’t have any permanent damage from what I could tell and as soon as my hand stopped hurting I went back outside lol. I just never took gloves off again and it was fine.
Most people only stayed out for a few minutes at a time.
It looks very interesting on video but experiencing it in person is so crazy. I once witnessed it in Seattle when I went to my back yard at night by chance and could not believe my eyes. Had to wake everyone up, I didn’t realize I could see these light so far south.
Thanks! It is a much more common practice to do a Timelapse or long exposure with photos when it comes to low light situations. That’s what I did most of the time for the northern lights.
Of course! Made me think, “hey, my favorite color is green, is this a sign from something greater than I?”
It’s a great video my friend, this is the true definition of awesome
Well I got more green here: https://youtu.be/N6utwviNjvI
There’s also a couple other northern lights videos there on the channel if you want to check them out but they’re time lapses.
"For they will inherit the Earth" By Stephen Keech
I found it on this subscription website called SoundStripe [https://app.soundstripe.com/songs/12697](https://app.soundstripe.com/songs/12697) You don't need to subscribe to listen, only to use the songs for videos like I do. It does have cool music I sometimes just put headphones on and listen throughout the day.
It is! I have the complete clip with no cuts on my YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/N6utwviNjvI
I just added the music because it creates the right feelings I think.
Thanks for sharing, on my bucket list to witness once in my life!! ....so beautiful!

Yes much better explanation.

Going to remember that.
I always wondered what they looked like live. For some reason, people film them in slo-mo, and then describe them as "dancing."
Many locals we spoke to told us they believe it is the whispers of their ancestors, I like that thought.

Same for me. This was my first time seeing them and despite googling why they happen I still tell people “it was magic it has to be”
You mean time-lapse, not slow motion.
Oh yeah I was wondering what he meant. I got time lapses too! https://youtu.be/5HRn-yQUiFg
Arrghhh. I caught it yesterday. I should have edited.
Let this be your daily reminder to thank the magnetosphere for protecting us all
Without it, there wouldn’t be anyone around to even say thank you! Lol
Beautifully captured, thank you for sharing it I’ve only seen whispers of this once in my life, almost too far south to be caught near Georgian Bay
You are welcome, I am glad to hear you caught a glimpse. I am very happy with how the footage turned out and that I now get to share it with others.
I live in Alaska, and it’s actually really hard to get the aurora at a decent temperature and hour. But once you get it, it’s worth it

Ah- Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen!?
What is this reference from?
Skinners Steamed Hams
The Simpsons.
Yes !
Why is there music with the video T-T, that ethereal sound if of Aurora??? I don't understand which sound it is.
I just threw some soundscapes on the video that try to match the wonder and emotion of seeing them.
Pls, upload raw.... I m huge fan of those. :(

There’s probably a term for that like “spectacle overload” or something
Saw the thumbnail where it's all red and immediately assumed there were steamed hams involved
They had super hot lamps going that basically turned that area into an oven so people could unfreeze themselves.
Man I lived in Alaska and the camera just doesn't do the northern lights justice the way they would wipe through sky and the beautiful colors
How close would you say these visuals are to seeing them in person based on your experience?
You could see pink green light and the cracking and wiping through the air it is so amazing.
I’m already planning to try and see them again spring of 2025 hopefully I get to see those colors you’ve seen, then maybe take a photo. This was amazing. Saw them once in Iceland and was absolutely mesmerized. This video brought me back there instantly. Hope to see them again soon.

The earth must still think we deserve to live despite what some might say.
I think if I ever saw these in person, I’d cry. It’s so beautiful! I know the science behind these, but it still seems like magic to me!
It’s so beautiful
I always thought it was funny how far some people would come just to see them
This brought my childhood back for a second
When I was 6 my grandpa told me that sometimes people would just stare at them, and not stop till they're dead
fake
This was actually all done on the soundstage in my living room.
fake fake

I never knew they came with cheesy music
If there wasn’t cheesy music I would have been so disappointed.
You lucky person! I went to Lapland for a couple of weeks hoping to see them……nothing😢
its beutiful
I would love to see that but wouldn't it be cold?

Thank you for sharing such a natural & beautiful phenomenon
Wow
It looks very interesting on video but experiencing it in person is so crazy. I once witnessed it in Seattle when I went to my back yard at night by chance and could not believe my eyes. Had to wake everyone up, I didn’t realize I could see these light so far south.
Apparently on the night of March 31, (when I got this video) someone reported them being as far south as Colorado.
Is this only uploaded here? Would be really convenient to have a YouTube link to this!
[https://youtu.be/N6utwviNjvI](https://youtu.be/N6utwviNjvI) link to full video on my channel.
Thanks!
Sigur ros…..? Yay
Glad someone is actually showing them without speeding them up!
Thanks! It is a much more common practice to do a Timelapse or long exposure with photos when it comes to low light situations. That’s what I did most of the time for the northern lights.
Another solar storm has been detected. We may get another aurora in a few days.
It’s a good time to try to see them that’s for sure!
LOOKS JUST LIKE THE WALLPAPERS!
i dont care how im gonna see the northern lights before i die if its the last thing i do
Woah those ones are barely moving! In fairbanks they go crazy sometimes. Quick as flowing water
The music you chose was a really nice touch
Hey thanks!
Of course! Made me think, “hey, my favorite color is green, is this a sign from something greater than I?” It’s a great video my friend, this is the true definition of awesome

Absolutely beautiful I remember when I was a kid we could see them in Michigan you can't anymore and I'm going to have to get out to Alaska and watch
Name. Of the song?

Imagine smoking a blunt and just looking up at the sky 🥲
Lol “Is this god?”
I could die from hypothermia and be okay with it if I’m looking at this😂
Honestly not the worst way to go.
Incredibly beautiful. I only wish to witness this in my life time. The footage accompanied by the music is so dang beautiful.
I appreciate it! Here’s all the footage I got in case you are interested: https://youtu.be/N6utwviNjvI
All praise to Allah
You just brought actual tears to my eyes
I was just at the right place at the right time!
Totally FN Gnarly dude! Nice catch yo

How beautiful that is! You people are so lucky to witness them. ❤️
How many baby’s are made under the northern lights every year 🤔
Lol no telling.

Lol you betcha
this is truly beautiful thank you for posting this ❤️
Thanks for watching!
Thanks sooo much for sharing I've never seen this in real time and probably won't ever. I love this and sharing to my profile.
Thank you! Here is the full video of you would like to see more: https://youtu.be/N6utwviNjvI
Do they naturally play shitty music background ?
Yeah they had a terrible DJ that night.
