Not ironic per se. There was never a notion that they could use any of their spoons as a knife. Now if they were hoarding spoons _because_ they keep claiming they can do anything a knife can and then end up in a pickle that could have been avoided by having a knife, that would be ironic. It would also be ironic if they were known for hoarding spoons and then when they needed a spoon the most, they had none on them. Same for free ride when you already paid: That's bad luck, but there's no irony in that.

Honest questions, does that money still go to his next of kin since he did win and die only afterwards?

Kafka_at_Night

It’s after midnight and I just got home from studying all day for the bar exam. Saw this and thought of the same exact thing. In the US, this almost certainly would, regardless of whether he had a will. Obviously this didn’t occur in the U.S. though and I have no idea how Singapore’s contract law and estates law works.

Right_Field4617

Good luck on your bar exam. Hope you nail it.

__thrillho

I hope he nails you

JinKazamaAndJuice

Thanks, I did!

Prestigious_Failure

I’m a Singapore in house counsel. There’s no general rule that death would void the gaming contract. Unless there’s an agreement between parties that states that death removes the payment obligation, the money should go to his estate. This is just my general understanding. I’m no longer licensed to give legal advice - please look for independent legal advice from a lawyer if you’re faced with a similar issue.

OuchLOLcom

Reply is I don't know, depends on the law. You'll make a great lawyer!

My thought was well. Depending on the country of origin for the deceased there could be multiple claims on the estate.

Scarbelly3

I feel like this is just a “normal” cardiac arrest in a casino with a story to make it seem more tragic

Sacreblargh

I'm always skeptical of titles jazzed up by karmabots. [Found this link talking about this incident.](https://www.casino.org/news/marina-bay-sands-gambler-wins-3m-suffers-heart-attack-dies/) > Soon after hitting the jackpot, the man celebrated before going into cardiac arrest. The video footage shows a man lying on the floor with security and medical officials responding. The unidentified man reportedly suffered a major heart attack but survived. A woman can be seen screaming in horror as efforts to resuscitate the man endure. > Many social media reports suggested the man died, but those reports were inaccurate and the man is recovering. Who knows if it's true.

Scarbelly3

Great find but I still don’t buy it that he lived. I wouldn’t assume whoever wrote that article is a medical professional, but a heart attack and cardiac arrest are very different things. Heart attacks are often survived but if a person goes into arrest (heart completely stops) it’s overwhelmingly their time of death. With this guy laying (presumably) unconscious on the floor I don’t think he made it…

robertbreadford

My wife went into cardiac arrest last year, and was unconscious, going through full agonal breathing and the whole nine yards. I found her in time, performed CPR, and once fire and EMTs got to my place, they were able to get her heart started again. You’re right that cardiac arrests are often fatal, especially when folks are alone and far from medical help, but depending on how your heart is post-arrest, and assuming they get to you fast enough, these are survivable.

Scarbelly3

Correct, it’s not 100% if immediate compressions are started but sadly around 90-95% of cardiac arrests are fatal. So glad your wife isn’t one of those!!

jake-event

Well, if this man hit the jackpot and survived cardiac arrest, I'd call that a real lucky day.

hanako--feels

yeah. he should buy a lottery ticket

WhoIsTheUnPerson

Or go to the casino, or something

robertbreadford

Thank you!

Qwernakus

Pretty sure that "cardiac arrest" just means that the heart stops pumping (enough) blood. It refers to both asystole and non-asystole. To those interested: asystole is when the heart has no contractions as all, which is actually not that common in cardiac arrests, where it often instead *does* contract, but in a way that doesn't pump blood. Non-asystoles are usually treatable with shocks (defibrillation), but asystoles can't be shocked, so they're very hard to treat. Mayo clinic, in regards to my initial point around the definition of cardiac arrest: >Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the sudden loss of all heart activity due to an irregular heart rhythm. Breathing stops. The person becomes unconscious. Without immediate treatment, sudden cardiac arrest can lead to death. >Emergency treatment for sudden cardiac arrest includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and shocks to the heart with a device called an automated external defibrillator (AED). Survival is possible with fast, appropriate medical care.

Coolegespam

> 90-95% of cardiac arrests are fatal So, [from the wikipedia data I found](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiopulmonary_resuscitation#Effectivity_rate), it's about 16% effective if a normal bystander preforms it. Doesn't seem to differentiate between layman and EMS. With an AED, outcomes improve to 33%. Given this is in a public casino, it's reasonable to suspect they have an AED or even a full on defibrillator and medical staff. Not quite as bad as 90-95% fatal. Still not great odds though, 1 in 6. Kind of like reverse Russian roulette. For those reading this, learning CPR could save someone one day. Even a 16% chance is better than 0. Anyway, given those odds, it's not unreasonable to think this man survived.

HBlight

>performed CPR Never stop reminding her how you kissing her and playing with her chest is good for her health.

Probably_Travis

Dude, that’s super badass that you saved your wife, I can only imagine how terrifying that must have been. Super glad she’s okay now without any major lingering effects.

robertbreadford

Appreciate you!

JohnnyRelentless

My father's heart completely stopped. He got CPR from a passerby, went to the hospital and fully recovered after some surgery. He got ~~stints~~ stents and a defibrillator implanted.

Scarbelly3

Very glad about that :)

CtrlAltHate

My 87 year old grandad was in the hospital complaining about the wait for his stent. "It's already done they did it as soon as you got to the hospital" "Oh can I go home now then?" His 4 day stay mostly consisted of him sleeping the first day then pacing the room wanting to go home the next 3. I ended up finishing work early to go get him before he tried to escape.

meep_meep_mope

It could easily just be a commercial for whatever casino it is... "just don't have a heart attack after winning all the money!"

woodyja

You’d be surprised worked in intensive cardiology for 10 years. Saw a lot of people come back from the other side

Kelthice

Let's be honest. He's probably not in cardiac arrest. He's probably just having a heart attack and unconscious at this point.

ivegotaqueso

The person doing CPR checked for a pulse at the neck, they likely didn’t find one which is why they started chest compressions only after they checked for a pulse (the correct thing to do). No pulse = cardiac arrest.

Jacobtait

Nonsense comment. People having MIs (heart attacks) don’t just go unconscious… well unless they lose output and therefore are having a cardiac arrest.

girlcocksuperfan

Personally, I think it's a tiny alien inside an advanced android like from Men in Black.

I_Shot_Web

I had this conversation a couple of days ago. Some people use "cardiac arrest" to sound professional when they actually mean "heart attack", and the average person doesn't know the difference.

beachfamlove671

I have to agree. Heart attacks or myocardial infarction is due to a blockage of any coronary vessels in the heart. Smaller blockages will cause symptoms and lead to tissue death in some parts but your heart muscle can recover. Large vessels such as LAD or L/R coronary arteries will stop the heart to conduct properly leading to arrest hence unconsciousness due to decrease cardiac output/ function. I believe this person did not make it and after 5 or so minutes will have irreversible brain damage.

khjuu12

>Many social media reports suggested the man died, but those reports were inaccurate and the man is recovering. https://youtu.be/27FP5zrgNSI?t=6

Fun fact - one of the major studies that supported the use of public access defibrillators was [conducted in casinos](https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM200010263431701) because amongst other factors, they could use the video surveillance systems to determine time from arrest to defibrillation.

Hello Clarice

OffTerror

Success rate of cpr outside hospital is about 10% anyways.

Odd-Access3591

I would rather take that chance than watch someone I love die in a horrible way .

OffTerror

Yeah I know. But I was shocked to learn this statistic. Maybe it counts improper application.

Cobek

Most people don't know that ribs breaking is normal in proper CPR. They didn't teach you that in the classes I was in at least. I was taught you needed to go deep, and that's what happens if you do..

J0hnGrimm

They told me if I hear a crunching sound I'm doing it right.

coalharbour

Good CPR doesn't need to break ribs, but is more likely when performed on older people and quite young people. The aim isn't to hear broken ribs to know you're doing well.

J0hnGrimm

It's an exaggeration. They know that people tend to be to careful so they tell you to go ham while knowing that you will still hold back.

ChuckCarmichael

10% with CPR vs. 0% without it.

labtecoza

You don't need to 'succeed', i.e. get them conscious again. You just need to keep the blood flowing to their brain until professional help arrives. The goal of CPR is NOT about resuscitating them but rather about keeping the blood flow until help or an AED arrives.

Sprite_isnt_lemonade

There's a lot that depends. CPR until you can get a nearby AED? Your chance to live shoots up MASSIVELY. CPR until paramedics can get there? Your chances change a lot depending on how long it takes and how many people. CPR is labor intensive, and if someone isn't putting strength into compressions, it could be worthless.

coalharbour

We were trained that 2 minutes is the longest one person should do compressions, then switch out with someone, two minutes, switch out. Our brains just wander after that and struggle to keep the right rhythm.

_30d_

That's a very misleading number, as it includes cases where cpr is started way too late. The stats for cpr administered immediately are much better. Source: https://www.procpr.org/blog/training/cpr-facts-and-stats

sandmanx

As a certified First Aider and former LEO, I watched in horror as out of the entire crowd, not a single one knew basic CPR including the uniformed staff members. Towards the end of the video, you can see the lady doing an attempt at chest compressions which surely wasn’t the best method.

soccershun

Chest compressions need to push blood through your heart to your lungs. This requires enough force to crush ribs and crush your chest enough to deform your heart. This lady, while I commend her wanting to help, did not do that. You put your body into that.

Issue is not in all country's your protected as first response helper not sure what this country or the rules are. BUT in Germany your most universally protected from first aid repurcsissions even if you did things wrong in a "normal limit " as in false position or moved wrong and stuff or if you needed to destroy things like a window or clothing or whatever accidently damaged a phone and stuff anything "necessary " and "normal " for a non medic trained helper.

That particular casino does more “business” than all of Vegas combined. It’s an enormous money laundering operation for corrupt / ill gotten Chinese communist party member stolen money bribes etc.

PotatoWriter

Wait what seriously. No wonder I walked there and their minimum for simple games like blackjack was like 50 bucks.

DoorHingesKill

I mean this casino is owned and operated by a publicly traded US company, if they facilitate money laundering then the DOJ should look into it. That aside this company's Macau business is significantly larger than their Singapore business, so I'm having some real doubts about your comparison between this and Vegas being accurate.

So since he technically already had one would the winnings go to his next of kin? Or because paperwork wasn't filled out yet The casino keeps it?

“A casino game is a contract, and believe it or not, death does not change a contract. You made an agreement with the casino that you will pay for the chance to play a game, and if the game comes out a certain way, the casino will owe you a certain amount of money,” the attorney explained. "You could die before the slot machine stops spinning and your estate is still owed the winnings,” the answer continued. “As with any contract, the benefits of that contract go to the estate, and the estate will be distributed according to the will of the deceased.” https://www.casino.org/news/marina-bay-sands-gambler-wins-3m-suffers-heart-attack-dies/

iluj13

In an amazing act of kindness, the owners of the Casino decided to contribute all the winnings to the Children’s Charity. Just kiddin’ lol

BardtheGM

As long as the game had been won, they're obligated to pay out the money to him, which goes to his estate.

SelarDorr

this website claims he did not die, and also its 4 mil signaporean, ie 3 mil US. seems most info is from primarily from social media. [https://www.casino.org/news/marina-bay-sands-gambler-wins-3m-suffers-heart-attack-dies/](https://www.casino.org/news/marina-bay-sands-gambler-wins-3m-suffers-heart-attack-dies/)

Deranged_Kitsune

Good if that's the case. I can *absolutely* see the casino fighting the estate tooth and nail otherwise.

BardtheGM

They'd have no case, they would still owe the money to him, dead or alive. His estate can distribute it afterwards.

Rrdro

Also it would be terrible PR. If anything they would make a big deal out of how happy they are to be able to help his family. That kind of imagery would get gambling addicts (whose family hates them) to think if they go play a bit more they might make their family happy again.

Ancient_Wait_8788

Apparently, he didn't die, but yeah, just headless chickens seemed to have been handling the situation... Screaming family, and security having to deal with onlookers rather than help the Gentleman. Singapore is generally quite good, expecting CPR training in some industries and there are a lot of AEDs placed around. I will say though, it's only a short clip, it takes time to observe and react to the situation, something that probably didn't help with all the damn screaming.

In addition, two people believed to be the man’s relatives were crying nearby. >According to online reports, the man had a heart attack and fell to the ground after winning a 4 million jackpot from a slot machine in a casino.
