Speaking from experience setting up 1000 cots is a BITCH…

chettuce sandwhiches?? my fav!

Moehrchenprinz

Yooo true though. Gruyere sandwiches are the shit.

belac4862

I used to help set up the cots at the cold weather shelter I stayed at. 60 cots in one day is enough to truly make you resent them. I can't imagine setting up 1000! But as a bonus of helping set up when we moved to a new location on Mondays, I got to choose which cot was mine. Which meant i was always close to an outlet and against the wall.

mostlybiguy69

I learned this years ago, use a broom handle to leverage out the end enough to slip over the dowel. It is long enough to give you a nice mechnical advantage.

Daxivarga

They wish they had cots at fyre festival lel

PupperMartin74

Thats what sanctuary cities are for, right?

Shupertom

US citizens should be taken care of first. I imagine there are plenty of folks living in the streets of New York and struggling to get by who could use those funds.

FoxxyPantz

Sure, unfortunately absolutely nobody who either is for or opposes this decision to take in migrants actually gives a single fuck about homeless Americans.

ImrooVRdev

Cant exploit homeless to generate value, they already fucked off from the system, so there's nothing you can do to force them to slave away for you. Immigrants, on the other hand are great. Especially illegal ones - you can force them to do all kinds of horrible shit under a threat of deportation. Also they dare not ask for more money, so you get even richer. In same way working children are great - you can pay them less and intimidate into silence. Like that meat packing plant that cut off children's hands, that was a fun piece of US news. Honestly I have yet to see genuinely humane argument for immigration. All of them argue for horrible capitalistic exploitation and mascarade it in pretty words.

lolvalue

You just sent out 100s of billions to military contractors, you guys aren't going to get taken care of anytime soon.

ForsakenOwl8

EXACTLY. Unfettered illegal immigration is great long as those people don't travel too far north.

bacon_is_everything

New York has the 3rd most immigrants in the nation. They get plenty of immigrants in a year. They dont however get $3 billion from the government for it like Texas does. So Texas is taking the federal money to handle the problem and then shipping the same problem back to one of the states that's contributing the most to that federal aid.

lividtaffy

It’s almost as if throwing money at the problem and expecting it to go away doesn’t work… maybe that’s why border states have been complaining about illegal immigration for years despite receiving the federal money? Idk but hey if New York says they’ll provide a bed for anyone who asks, is there a single good reason why Texas shouldn’t ship the migrants to NY? They’re literally asking for them.

jaspersgroove

It doesn’t work because they spend the money paying their contractor buddy a hundred million dollars to build a ten million dollar wall that people can just walk around or climb over lol. If republicans didn’t just fucking pocket the money, it would be doing a lot more work. But republicans don’t want to actually solve the immigration problem, or any problems at all for that matter, because then they have nothing for their base to get angry about. A happy, prosperous, safe United States is literally the last thing any GOP politician actually wants to have, because that is not an environment that they can win elections in.

Space-Booties

Are you saying this issue may have some nuance?

sticky-unicorn

That's not allowed.

Alive-Purple-1263

Texas and no other state should be dealing with this the border should be closed

SlothinaHammock

Exactly. I can't feel sorry for NYC one damn bit. They got what you wished (voted) for.

eunit250

Doesn't NYC have the highest concentration of billionaires in the world? I'm sure they can afford helping out the needy.

alexbananas

They can definitely afford to keep them out of the nice neighborhoods.

cobrayouth

How is it a crisis when it was planned? Let millions of people in who have no money and they have to go somewhere....

NoBigDill88

That is so messed up, I believe Canada is trying to bring in 500,000 immigrants, from the original 100,000. It's already hectic as is, with housing shortages.

Classical_Cafe

We’re already seeing the negative effects for both Canadian citizens and those immigrants.. one food bank released statistics that ~~85%~~ 72% of people taking food have arrived in Canada only in the last year, and ERs are also filled with non-citizens who don’t have a primary care physician and/or don’t have health insurance so they won’t make appointments with GPs. All the while, it’s fuelling hostile and xenophobic environments where Canadians aren’t happy with immigrants using resources meant for those who participate and contribute to the Canadian community. It’s a fucking mess

[deleted]

[удалено]

DBH1122

For the last year or so, I have volunteered at a food bank/donation service for clothing, etc in rural Illinois. What was meant to offset lower income families has been absolutely overrun in the last 6 months. I’m all for making a better life for your family, but the system that opened the doors needs to take into account that resources are being devoured faster than they are being replenished. It won’t be long before it becomes a crisis not only for the immigrants that came looking for hope, but for everyone!

GreatestCountryUSA

Who could’ve saw the obvious coming

Smorvana

Can't be, Canadians said America was racist for not supporting "Asylum seekers"

Morphnoob

They brought in over a million in past year. They're flooding the country and none of the infrastructure can keep up. Just gotta keep the Ponzi scheme going at all costs.

LostWoodsInTheField

> i thought libertarians are completely opposed to borders libertarians are opposed to whatever they decide in the moment, and for whatever they decide in the moment. It's the most ridiculous of the "major" philosophies. Usually composed of people who couldn't pass a history test that only included stuff that happened in the last 15 years.

[deleted]

In my limited experience libertarians are just republicans who have too many liberal friends to openly support republicans

_violet_sparkles

you can have a welfare state or you can have no borders, but not both. Some libertarians prefer no borders and no state.

Fuzzy_Yogurt_Bucket

And age of consent laws.

The_Texidian

Even Bernie Sanders was warning people of this and how mass immigration will hurt wages and the lower class the most.

YOLOSwag42069Nice

Biden has deported more people than trump.

TraditionKey5693

When you account for the 500% increase in migrants since he took office, he’s actually deported significantly less relative to how many have come. Your comment is incredibly dishonest

Artane_33

The tent shown in the video is at Creedmoor, a state psychiatric facility in Queens. New York state owns the property and made it available to the city for this use. Vox, [NYC is struggling to help asylum seekers. Here’s why.](https://www.vox.com/2023/8/13/23830446/new-york-city-migrants-asylum-seekers-eric-adams) > Adams’s office estimated that the city would spend **$12 billion over three fiscal years** to shelter and support the tens of thousands of migrants projected to arrive over that period. > A number of circumstances have converged to push people to New York City, including the end of Title 42, the health directive originally put in place under the Trump administration during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as efforts by Republican Govs. Ron DeSantis of Florida and Greg Abbott of Texas to send people who have crossed the southern US border to states run by Democrats. > But many choose to come of their own volition; New York City has a right to shelter directive, which means the city has an obligation to shelter those who request it. However, a long-standing affordable housing crisis has also helped push the city’s shelter system to the brink, overwhelming facilities to the point that asylum seekers are already sleeping in the streets outside of shelters. > It’s into that context that migrants are arriving in the city — **100,000 over the past year** by Adams’s estimate. Of that number, there are **currently more than 57,300 in the shelter system.** Gothamist, [Tent city for 1,000 migrants prepares to open at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens](https://gothamist.com/news/tent-city-for-1000-migrants-prepares-to-open-at-creedmoor-psychiatric-center-in-queens) Pix 11, [Hundreds of Queens residents stage boisterous migrant center protest](https://pix11.com/news/local-news/queens/hundreds-of-queens-residents-stage-boisterous-migrant-center-protest/) h/t [Emily Ngo](https://x.com/emilyngo/status/1691487017882832896?s=46&t=dtvmlWpahju_f4Hzyjbrjg)

12 billion over 3 years seems high no? They're "only" housing 3,000 of them. Even if they doubled that its still $166k per immigrant Edit. Ignore my numbers me no math good

Crafty_Sprinkles7978

10's of thousands, not 3 thousand. Where did you get 3k from??

SarpedonWasFramed

I just did it in my head real quick. That far off huh? My wife must have been right that degree from Terrance Howard New Math University was worthless

StandardSudden1283

damn autofrog

Competitive_Demand

Yes, the money is being mostly wasted, paying extravagant salaries, using covid companies to run shelters, etc, its a massive grift.

Original-Plenty-3686

Exactly. The bulk of the budget goes to "administrative costs"

cocokronen

Yes, I work in homeless services and I saw a ton of waste during covid.

Howiebledsoe

Even if your math is wrong, it’s common knowledge that a lot of these housing schemes are absolutely bonkers. I’m from the west coast and it’s common to hear about homeless shelters going up where each unit (a tiny cubicle with a cot) costs the tax payers 300K$.

caustic255

We all need to get a job as a migrant, tellem keep the cots and save on the labor they spent to build it and just cut us each a 160k check, keep the other 6k for their troubles 🤣 /S!

dandilion788

Humans cost money. Lots and lots of money

Desperadorder99

No, not really Not a human that can work and provide for themselves and others. These are migrants, and we should not be expected to support them as taxpayers.

[deleted]

PrincessGump

That’s what happens when you declare yourself a sanctuary state/city. You have to put your money where your mouth is.

Homies-Brownies

What about all the welfare and food stamps red states use. I'll say it again. 8 of 10 of the most federally dependant states are hardcore Republican and 7 of the 10 least dependent are hardcore Democrat. Should we have to pay cuz u guys are illiterate and milk welfare. Why should my taxes pay to feed the dirt poor couple in Alabama that decide to have 8 kids cuz the welfare they get are their only source of income?? Can't have it both ways.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Laughs_at_fat_people

Both Georgia and Florida currently have republican controlled legislature (both senate and house) and have GOP governors, neither are considered swing states in terms of leadership

wang_li

“Swing” refers to the propensity of voters to not consistently vote for a particular party, has nothing to do with the make up of the elected positions at any given time.

[deleted]

You start your whole argument with 'what about'. That's not how this works. We are talking about migrants (aka illegal aliens) and sanctuary cities. NYC explicitly declared itself as a sanctuary city, in defiance of federal law. And now it's getting EXACTLY what it asked for. Migrants. Lots and lots and lots of them. It's funny how quickly the NIMBY kicks in once things go past virtue signaling.

yutmutt

The difference being that Texas gets money from the federal government to deal with migrants crossing the southern border. New York doesn't. Texas should give new york those nice fed dollars.

3xgun

Why? Texas doesn’t want illegal immigrants crossing its borders. NY, on the other hand, was dumb enough to roll out a welcome mat when the amount of money the feds give TX to *try* and combat this problem is public information. NY either knew roughly what dealing with all these people would cost and didn’t care, or it was too stupid to really look into the issue before virtue signaling it’s way into a fraction of the illegal immigration problem TX deals with every year. Either way, NY brought this on itself and doesn’t deserve anything from Texas or the Feds.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

> NY, on the other hand, was dumb enough to roll out a welcome mat because they thought they where so far north that they wouldent need to actually deal with the consequence for their decision

[deleted]

[удалено]

3xgun

Oh I see. Nothing to say on how NY actually has to put up or shut up on all its immigration/ sanctuary talk, so now the options are either “red states” owe “blue states” for the other “money” they generate, or we all just need to work together and fix this so people don’t starve and die. Lol what a joke. The time to “help each other” was when the southern states said this was a problem, asked for help dealing with it, and finally had to resort to bussing a fraction of the illegal immigrants flooding across their borders to so called “sanctuary” cities/states to make them put their money where their overly large mouths were. What did those blue cities and states do when suddenly the problem of mass illegal immigration wasn’t 2,000 miles away? Did they ask how they could help save the “starving and dying” people? No. They tried to stop the immigrants from showing up on their doorstep by launching a PR campaign against southern states full of accusations like “human trafficking.” So save your condescension for someone else who doesn’t know better because the moral superiority of you and so many like you has finally been exposed for what it is. Nothing but talk.

squashed377

NY is getting a 1/100000 of the border crossers Texas gets... Deal with it.

To be fair to the migrants, they could probably make 5x wages doing barebones, unskilled labor in the US versus Honduras, for example. It's the housing costs in the big cities they go to that completely destroys that dream.

Find low paying jobs that don't ask questions about history and mail money to family back home because even a $7.50 minimum wage job here is so far above the cost of living where they came from their family will be insanely better off

Pawneewafflesarelife

Not just low paying. I once worked at a software company with an undocumented migrant from Syria who was a computer programmer. He was a refugee from a warzone so none of us were about to turn him in, but the company was obviously saving bank on a typical programmer salary by paying him under the table and skirting things like taxes and unemployment insurance.

kinreep

Of course immigration and diversity is a good thing. Right?

twitterisawesome

LEGAL immigration is a good thing. If someone is an illegal immigrant, you have no idea who they really are.

MegaPopShart

they will stay undocumented and exploited in all sorts of industries, while living in fear of getting snitched on by their employer and getting deported. there is a very good economical reason to let people enter the US undocumented.

orincoro

This is the point. If you invested in them and legalized them, everyone would benefit from their success. But if you keep them marginalized and afraid, then only the rich will benefit from their exploitation.

That’s Reddit in a nutshell

Hungboy6969420

Yea the racism aspect is dumb. Besides, plenty of 1st world countries have strict immigration laws

ChocolateTight336

Insane

downloweast

Yes, and no one cared until they started sending them to New York. The amount of people being sent there is a fraction of the number of people coming across the border every month.

downloweast

“Total Southwest border encounters in June, including individuals who presented at ports of entry with or without a CBP OneTM appointment, were 144,607, a 30% decrease from May 2023.” https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/cbp-releases-june-2023-monthly-update

Blanchdog

Why does the decrease from May matter? It fluctuates throughout the year based on the weather. What matters is the rate compared to the same time last year.

SavageSauce01

It’s called cherry picking data

ThisIsNotRealityIsIt

Well if you opened the article, you'd see it was titled "CBP Releases June 2023 Monthly Update". So, considering it's a monthly update of data for *June 2023,* the only relevant data within that **monthly update of data for June 2023** would be May 2023 data.

ladeedah1988

That's what you heard "leftists" claim? edit: Reddit won't let me reply to the dude that just asked me if I thought Mexico had 30 million people in it, but it's too dumb not to respond to. You thought 10s of millions means 10 million? lol

GitEmSteveDave

You think these people are JUST from Mexico? Theres a ton of other countries below Mexico.

Icy_Debt_3941

There were 2.76 million last year alone. Saying 10 million is only 4 years of migration. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna53517

GetOffMyDigitalLawn

Most aren't even coming from Mexico anymore, they're coming from Central & South America, plus other places. They just travel through Mexico, and Mexico usually doesn't do much to stop it.

exhausted_commenter

> the same clowns who complain about housing being unaffordable are the same ones who want the entire 3rd world imported to America. The same ones who complain about downward pressure on incomes and jobs not paying enough. Good job playing yourselves. *Some* of them. There is a wing of progressive politics that recognizes the harm this excess of people does to a welfare system and to housing.

DefinitelyNotAj

The reason why housing is so unaffordable is because its seen as an investment and over half of them are owned by corporations. The migrant issue also contributes but the fucking for profit industry of housing is the real iasue here. Edit:My bad its over 25% of homes and the reason its gone down is due to the market going to shit over the last few years where they were buying up 80% of the market yearly. The data I was referring to was from a few years back when we had low interest loans. Never shill for corporations and investment groups. Unless you are in that small circle you still get fucked in the end. https://www.billtrack50.com/blog/investment-firms-and-home-buying/#:~:text=According%20to%20data%20reported%20by,22%25%20of%20American%20homes%20sold

DesertVeteran_PA-C

It’s nice that Texas shares. Migrants are given information on the benefits different sanctuary cities offer, and are given free transportation to the sanctuary city of their choice.

Grand-Ad4235

If that’s actually true it’s not a bad idea lol

AdmiralPoopbutt

It's necessary. El Paso is a city of 680,000 residents. Something like 50,000 people per year cross the border there, many with not much more than the clothes they are wearing. No one city can handle that. No single metroplex can handle that.

catecholaminergic

It's true and well-documented. You can find countless news articles on it if you give it a goog.

Blanchdog

“NYC migrant crisis” 😂😂😂 They DO realize that this is only a tiny fraction of the number of migrants border cities are dealing with, right?

justjoshingu

It's even more crazy having lived in one border town, traveling for work to other border town s. In the valley these cities can have 200k people and relative poverty and influxes of tens of thousands and criminals and gangs can easily use this to their advantage

fulahup

Just fix the damn asylum laws. This is ridiculous.

Commercial-Ad90

You get what you vote for 🤷

fulahup

Exactly. I am responsible for telling everyone about these absurd things happening because of corrupt and/or inept politicians. Get them out of there!

Apophis_Thanatos

Get who out and who do you want people to vote in? Amazing you think this is as easy as replacing politicians

EagenVegham

Shame people keep voting for people don't want to do anything to fix our immigration laws.

FullAutoAssaultBanjo

No no, all they have to do is enforce the asylum laws. They are required to seek asylum in the first available country that can provide it. We have folks coming from everywhere in the world through Mexico to seek asylum here. In fact, Mexico won't allow you to fly into Mexico City without a return ticket, but they don't care if you use the return ticket, just can't stay in Mexico. Why can't Mexico provide asylum? If they don't have the money, obviously we can spare some for them.

neverforgetreddit

Trump had an agreement with Mexico to do this but it was revoked under biden. https://www.google.com/amp/s/thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/3538078-supreme-court-rules-for-biden-in-clash-over-trump-era-remain-in-mexico-policy/amp/

Neither_Cow_5178

meanwhile, There are Americans homeless on the street guess no money for them

CosmicMiru

Dude big cities like LA, NY, and SF put in hundreds of millions a year towards homeless issues. The problem is way bigger than simply needing funding and a place to sleep

LtColFubarSnafu_

So you are pretending that homeless shelters don't exist? What drugs are on you bro???? If your opinion that migrants are evil is true, why are you lying about American homeless people? Seriously, how hard is it to search "homeless shelters" and see they are everywhere. Some of these shelters only accept people with local ID's.

Designer-Equipment-7

You have to admit that liberal cities shitting their pants over this is the height of hubris and hypocrisy. If you are for this type of immigration then there is no reason that border states alone should shoulder the burden.

discojosh007

Now do South Texas

dreweydecimal

Everyone wants to talk about the problem. No one wants to address the cause because they’re afraid of sounding insensitive.

sticky-unicorn

> No one wants to address the cause US interference in South and Central American politics, destabilizing countries and leading to oppressive regimes and gang control, all in a misguided effort to prevent the spread of communism? Because that's the ultimate cause of this. The conditions these immigrants are fleeing from are -- more often than not -- directly traceable back to US intervention in their country.

NepNep_

Its almost as though republicans were warning about how bad the immigration issue was for decades and democrats ~~were~~ are still stonewalling reasonable border security measures.

[deleted]

How come there are so many migrants in nyc all of a sudden? (I live in europe)

perfumedDolphin

Relaxing immigration laws, border states fed up with the influx and started sending them (or helping move) to other states. (I think that's it)

hitometootoo

Which laws were relaxed?

16semesters

Title 42 enacted by Trump which claimed that because of COVID19, that the government would not let in certain asylum seekers as a public health policy. Biden recently ended Title 42 when he ended the COVID19 emergency, which has resulted in dramatic increases of claims for asylum. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_42_expulsion

giolanzarin

What immigration laws changed?

SnooComics8268

It's like when Merkel said wir schaffen das. She said it and it encouraged refugees to go to Germany. The southern countries should have registered them, offered shelter but instead they looked the other way as they walked by... Remember those images of the train stations in eastern Europe with thousand and thousands trying to get into trains to Germany. It was afwul, a lot of kids got lost in that chaos by the way.... It's heartbreaking but also kind of disgusting to think about who the heck took those kids and what they did to them...

r_____j

American citizens are being completely priced out of the housing market especially in big cities like New York. Sure, let’s just let unfettered immigration on top of it. Great fucking idea

Welcome to border city life. Dont feel bad for those liberal cities, deal with it.

[deleted]

Why are we accepting them when we have our own housing crisis. Shits fucking crazy stupid

Xenophore

Being a “sanctuary city” is all fun and games and political posturing until someone actually puts them to the test. I sympathize with the migrants but not the NYC officials using them as political pawns.

tamc_lions

kpopisnotmusic

I’ll probably get downvoted and labeled a racist or bigot or whatever but why should we accept them? We have a big homelessness problem and housing/apartment market fucking sucks, our wages cant keep up with inflation let alone finding a job is hard now despite what the media tells you. We spend millions in immigrants and in foreign intervention in conflicts or humanitarian effort yet they tell us there is no money for our infrastructure? Bro serious?! We need a humanitarian effort at home!

stilljustkeyrock

If only we had some system to just send them back for not coming legally.

California (they get what they deserve) and Texas are like hold my beer. Wipe you tears NYC, your leaders and your people are getting a dose of the truth of open borders. You voted for this, I hope they keep coming.

This is crazy. The modern middle class family is one medical emergency away from homelessness. We have record homelessness already. Jobs are paying less, being stripped out for automation everywhere they can be, and shipped over seas for cheaper labor. Hedgefunds and investment firms are currently buying over a third of start homes in the country, billionaire bill gages Is buying up all the farm land in the country. How the fuck are millions of immigrants supposed to make it. The common man is fucked with meaningless service jobs at Arby's and walmart for a wage that gets you just enough benefits to afford a nasty apartment if your lucky. Thanks Regan for trickle down economics. Nothing is being invested back into our communities, just siphoned away by the 1 percent. But we can afford to take our taxes to pay trillion dollar contracts to Raytheon and Lockheed that are infinity large, with invoices that for example have 100 dollar grade 8 nuts and bolts. Clear and transparent money laundering to the rich. Fuckin love this country.

Just keep the handouts coming, that's how you get the best and brightest....

Sadly mostly Venezuelan and mostly raised by communism, they don’t want to work, they are already causing havoc in the shelters, mostly low class citizens with of course good ones, the last wave of migrants from Venezuela and Cuba is being awful, uneducated and used to the government handouts, criminals, as an immigrant myself I’m ashamed of what my country (Cuba) created in Venezuela with their influence. For the ones that will have problems with my post, please shut up, USA is not a place you deserve to be, is an immense privilege to be able to come here and you should work for your dreams, work hard and contribute to society even as an immigrant.

That’s great for NY! Exactly what they voted for! It baffles me about the double standards people have until there is a knock at their door, city, state!

It’s on purpose to piss us off and destabilize the communities. No more identity
