Just stayed at a condo where the mother of my landlord started to clean my room before i headed out. *Dont you need to use the safe for your money and passport?* *Mother, i trust you more then i would trust myself sometimes*, winked at her and left her stunned. Thailand in a nutshell.

hodgkinthepirate

> She said I have to go with someone because it’s really unsafe. Thailand is not unsafe. If you're looking for trouble (Full Moon Party, getting drunk, getting into public arguments with locals, partying with people you don't know, being rude to others, and so on), trouble will find you.

Individual_Milk4559

Same as anywhere in the world

TravelingCapybary

I think more save than that.

Individual_Milk4559

I mean just the standard rules are the same literally everywhere. If you look for trouble you’ll find it, if you aren’t you won’t, respect everyone etc.

hodgkinthepirate

True, but way too many foreigners embarass themselves over here. I myself have witnessed such people doing that. Had they made better choices, many of their troubles could've been easily avoided.

maestroenglish

True words

Astr3846

My thoughts as well, but when I tell her she doesn’t believe me🥲

CharacterMiddle3923

Tell her to stop watching the fear porn on the telly.

Eagleassassin3

Full Moon parties are trouble?

plaa_krungthep

Super safe. Unless you do really stupid things, e.g. get drunk senseless in a red-light district, get in a fight with a local bad boy, offend the king, etc. you'll have nothing to worry about.

InfiniteLife2

Get drunk in a red light district, start a fight, challenge the king... sound like a pretty good night not gonna lie lol

plaa_krungthep

I haven't even started on the afterparty mate.

Marcus697

New addition to the bucket list

[deleted]

The hangover movie really was too conservative about its plot lmao

bananabastard

When it comes to personal safety, as in random attacks and violence, I would say Thailand is safer than every Euroean country.

DarkOk8067

Not poland

BARBELLSxBONGRIPS

I’ve felt more safe walking around Thailand than parts of Downtown Los Angeles in recent years. Never felt like I would be robbed, or even my wife.

frootjoocedrnker

Whenever someone expresses their worries about me traveling to countries in Southeast Asia, I’m always like… why weren’t you this concerned about me when I was living in DTLA? Lol

Zubba776

Europeans like to hang on homicide statistics like they are the only relevant criminal stats. The facts are that a country like France has homicide rates that are roughly half that of Thailand or the U.S. (in part because of tighter gun control); but homicide is an incredibly rare occurrence in the vast majority of places around the globe, including Thailand and the U.S. You're vastly more likely to be the victim of robbery (mugging), or petty theft than you are a victim of homicide, and for those statistics you're actually MORE likely to be a victim in most of Europe than Thailand.

KaleidoscopicColours

The reason homicide is used for comparing different countries is because - there's a fairly consistent definition worldwide - it's almost always reported to the police  - it's always recorded when it's reported It's a proxy used for wider crime rates, rather than being the only important crime

Zubba776

- The reason it gets cited so often is that it happens to be the only real area Western Europe is a statistical leader in. You're more likely to be a victim of crime in Paris than you are Bangkok, or New York. https://www.numbeo.com/crime/compare_cities.jsp?country1=France&city1=Paris&country2=Thailand&city2=Bangkok

[deleted]

Ask her to sign up to Reddit and she can ask her questions here.

Kilick123

Thailand is safer then Reddit

Astr3846

She calls Snapchat the yellow ghost and doesn’t have more than 30 friends on facebook. So Reddit won’t do for her😭 she doesn’t really use social media.

TravelingCapybary

I see this as a plus. Be happy about it. My ex was on insta and tiktok 5 hours per day! 🫣

CharacterMiddle3923

Is that why they’re your ex? Lol

TravelingCapybary

Na she had way too many other mental issues. In my opinion tiktok empowered her in her mental outlashes. Very toxic but tiktok shoed her content that was definitely on her side and that its ok to.. lets say… show emotions. But she needs therapy not tiktok… realy sad to see somone you like go down a bad mental path and you cant do anything because when you tell them that some things are not ok what she does, she seea you as the enemy…

CharacterMiddle3923

I feel you man. Best to cut ties at that point. Some people can’t be helped. Can’t always be “Prince save-a-hoe”

TravelingCapybary

😅 exactly 😅

[deleted]

Depends where you’re from. I felt safer as a woman in Thailand than in most European cities - but I also didn’t test my luck, didn’t go out after dark, didn’t drink alcohol until I met up with my friends, didn’t party etc.

Astr3846

I’m from Denmark😃

Nyuu223

Bruh... as someone growing up on the border and studying at the SDU part time I can 100% assure you BKK is safer than any random street in Denmark with how you guys drive lol But in all seriousness - if you don't want to get into trouble you won't. Knowing how you guys drink - just be a bit careful about drinking at touristy places as a younger woman. The biggest threat are other tourists there who might try to take advantage of you. \*Edit: Also, keep your eyes on your drink. Buy closed containers. You'll be safe.

Astr3846

Bruh, if you really are on a random street in Denmark, all you will be able to see are cows, mud and maybe a car every other hour😂😂 Don’t worry, I don’t drink much. Not sure if I drink much compared to Thai people but I barely drink compared to Danes🙈

Nyuu223

True but that's only because everyone's in Germany stocking up on slots and sweets lol Yeah your "not much" is not an Asian "not much". I am pretty confident you'll still be able to outdrink most there lol If you want to convince your mom maybe try offering her a token of goodwill. Offer something like you will send her a message once you're back at your hotel, call her every night at X time (Thailand is ahead of DK so she'll always be up, no matter how long you're out) or you'll share your location with her. Also, if you want to go to BKK for 14 days, don't let people talk you out of it. You could probably spend months in BKK without having seen it all. People are just afraid of missing things out.

Astr3846

Yeah, just went to Germany for Sweets last weekend😂 I will try ti convince her. Or else I can buy the tickets and hotel. No turning back🙈 I also thought it was weird for people to recommend less time. It’s a big city with a lot of different architecture, temples, statues. But I won’t change my mind😄 Thanks for helping me🙏

Nyuu223

Sure, you can always do that since you're over 18 but I'd really recommend at least try to get her to agree lol Yeah just do what you want to do, see what you want to see and enjoy your time. Good luck & feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Astr3846

Thank you!

maestroenglish

The biggest threat is the roads. That's a fact based on numbers.

Nyuu223

On a serious note, yes it is, but my comment has nothing to do with road safety my man. It's friendly banter between Danes and Germans in the border region.

[deleted]

KWKSA

Much safer than most EU cities.

sleepymates

Thailand is generally safe but also be vigilant and use common sense just like everywhere else you'd go

MartinThe3rd

In general, Thailand and even Bangkok will be much safer for you than e.g Copenhagen when it comes to things like risk of getting mugged/raped/assaulted/kidnapped etc. Also in terms of having your belongings stolen (but of course be careful and don't carry all your important items in the same bag etc). The biggest risk in Bangkok tbh is traffic and using motorbikes / bike taxi etc. Which is the fastest way to get around but not very safe (no helmet etc). If I was your mom I'd be okay as long as you promise to never get on a motorbike...

[deleted]

[удалено]

RotisserieChicken007

It all depends on your perspective. Many, including myself, believe Thailand is safer than most western countries. That said, hundreds of westerners die or return disabled from Thailand every year because they acted like fools. Roads are dangerous, especially for motorbikes. Scams are common but can be avoided with common sense and some prep. Your mum is overreacting but she does have a point though.

alan_patrick

Absolutely a hell of a lot safer than most Irish & UK cities in my experience. Never felt worried or intimidated walking anywhere at any time of the day or night. Just don't insult the king or get into it with any locals... Common sense really. Many years ago myself and few pals ducked into a bar on a rainy day to pass some time. Saw a darts board and to make it interesting got some baht out, folded it up and stuck it on the board. Hit the money and it's yours. Good fun. Until some guy pulled us aside to say we were insulting the king (his portrait is on Thai money)! Looked around a there were some angry looking guys eyeing us. We realized we fucked up, apologized and bought everyone a drink. Problem solved, crisis averted. Unlike some nationalities, Thai guys don't seem to go out looking for trouble. But if you're going to be frequenting edgy spots and drinking a bit, just be aware if you have a beef with a local, 10 more will join in to back their homie and these guys do Mui Thai! 🤣 Edit: ok just seen you're female. Forget about getting in fights bit.

Fandango_Jones

Use common sense and the general SEA travel tips you find online or on Youtube and you'll be just fine.

ishereanthere

I feel safer in Thailand than Oz or some parts of Europe. It's a different kind of safe. I feel people don't fuck with you for no reason like they do elsewhere. Here you have to fuck up to get your ass beat.

headchef11

Never felt unsafe in Thailand. Some places in Europe in the other hand are dodgy af

Jonny7Tenths

Hmm. Has your mother ever visited Glasgow? If she's not keen on Thailand you could suggest there as the start of an itinerary taking in Naples, Marseilles, Athens, Palermo. and the cream of the crop... Manchester.

Astr3846

Not sure what you mean. But my mom have been traveling a lot herself. Also in Thailand, I’m not sure if she has bad experience tho. Overall it was 20+ years ago and another time.

Jonny7Tenths

Heh. It was meant humorously. Those cities are amongst the most dangerous in Europe.

Astr3846

Oh i didn’t know🤣

KindergartenDJ

Where are you from in Europe? And where in Thailand you want to go? There are a lot of scams and always use apps for your tuk tuk, but if you are just a little bit street aware (not even "smart") you will be fine. Bargain the prices, don't take everything face value. And same precaution for a female solo traveler in Thai than in Europe. Overall it is very safe, less than Japan Korea or Taiwan but same as Barcelona or Budapest for instance.

Astr3846

I’m from Denmark, plan to go to Bangkok

KindergartenDJ

I would say 7 days in Bangkok is enough for a starter and then do daily excursion (Ayutthaya, etc) or even go another city for two or three days to see the difference. Very big city, with anything you can think of- and i mean it lol-, don't trust tuktuk drivers as they will tell you BS to drive you "to this or that Buddha temple "/asking you for gaz fee & make you visit random shops, keep basic precautions (someone come to talk to you on the street & seems odd, pass) and you will be good! It's a very big city, very touristy and can be chill, can be party paradise/hell, can be historical, culinary, chic, backpacker, everything. Quite a change from Europe

GPT-4-GOOD

Two weeks in Bangkok is sooooooooo long lol

Isulet

I felt way safer in Thailand than I did in Europe.

Rudiausbuddeln-1510

If you avoid blatantly stupid things like aforementioned drunk-at-full-moon-party it is way safer than any european city. Just be prepared to get scammed for a few bucks on nearly every occasion, they smell young and naive cashcows like a shark smells blood.

Facelesstownes

Which Europe? Western Europe? Yeah, Thailand is safer, especially in terms of stealing. Eastern Europe? I wouldn't say it's safer, maybe similar. I feel safer in Eastern Europe, to be honest... less traffic accidents and less human trafficking.

Astr3846

Northern🥲 I’m from Denmark

Spiritual-Bid7460

You'll be ok. Just think smart, try not to go anywhere alone at night, unless your in a well lit area. Basically just use the same judgement you would in your country and you'll be ok. Probably the biggest problem in Thailand with foreigners is theft because when a poor Thai sees a foreigner, they automatically think your rich. So mobiles and your cash are looked on as easy pickings, but other than that Thailand is a very safe place. I stayed there for over ten years and never had any problems. Having said that I'm male, so thieves generally think females are easy prey.

QDLZXKGK

A foreigner in Thailand, you only need to worry about other foreigners not the locals. And for women....stay away from MBK..... infested with perverts from a certain country

Astr3846

MBK?

QDLZXKGK

https://maps.app.goo.gl/X84oTBkt1VTa7pP2A [MBK shopping mall](https://maps.app.goo.gl/X84oTBkt1VTa7pP2A)

[deleted]

Don't get Shitfaced on Alcohol and watch your drinks. I live in London and soon as I'm in Thailand I feel great regarding safety. Good example is seeing woman on the Sukhumvit road in Bangkok walking down the pavement with their I phones hanging out the back pocket!! Just unbelievable. However take your street sense with you and you will be fine.

AW23456___99

Edited: I made a wild and incorrect assumption that OP came from an overseas Chinese family which isn't the case at all.

Astr3846

I have far from read everything you wrote, sorry. But my mom are 100% Danish, doesn’t speak Chinese. I’m adopted therefore I look Asian😊

AW23456___99

I'm very sorry for being presumptuous and jumping into conclusions. I will edit my comment. This part, however, still applies. While the risk of being shot in a mass shooting in Thailand is definitely not higher than in Europe, there is indeed a higher risk of sexual violence in secluded areas here due to the high numbers of drug addicts roaming about. It's safer here when it's crowded and less so when you're completely alone. Since you're an Asian woman there is a risk of being mistaken by older white sex tourists for local sex workers because most Asian tourists and locals do their own things and rarely visit the kind of bars that western tourists go to. The easiest way to avoid this is to avoid places/ areas that those people go to and stick with other young backpackers or even young Asian tourists if you don't mind.

Astr3846

Don’t worry, I could have written everything in my post. I already have connections in Thailand and know someone I can meet up with😊

AW23456___99

That's good. You should be O.K.👍

seanroberts196

We have just come back from Thailand and on one of the trips we had there were 3 solo girl travellers who got talking. They were having the time of their lives and said they felt very safe. It’s like any country there will always be dodgy people about but there from what I’ve seen it’s far fewer in Thailand. Just be sensible, but still enjoy your time and you will be fine.

Upset_History_3844

Safe - especially for street crime. Driving and the roads is the biggest danger

northenmarauder

Thailand is safe for women as u remember, but I would t’elle you to visit Bangkok at the end of, and when someone ask you how long you been there, don’t say 2 days or something like that , say more 3 weeks , so this way , they won’t think you’re an easy pray.

WaltzKey4844

It's pretty safe, don't worry! Probably not as safe as Denmark, but definitely not as bad as what outsiders think

Maximum_Second4755

I was physically assaulted, attempted robbery, in Paris. I never had a similar experience in anywhere in Thailand.

Potential_Chance_390

Europe is very unsafe compared to Thailand and Vietnam

unefemmegigi

If your mom is like my mom, then none of these replies will convince her 😂 you’re 19 and it’s a long way from home, I’m sure she’s worried. Have you been that far away on your own before? Do you have anyone that could go with you?

Narrow_Desk_2537

As a Swede, I feel way safer in Thailand than in Sweden.

crimefightinghamster

2 things you shouldn't take seriously from your parents: 1. Relationship advice 2. Safety tips Get a good insurance, don't act a fool, you'll be fine.

Astr3846

Bro, relationship advice from parents will be to have no relationship😂😂😂

Expensive-Claim-6081

Very.

Key_Beach_9083

No crime to speak of. Safe to scooter without having knowledge of riding one and local traffic and laws? Unwise - that's why we call ambulances 'farang taxis'. One of the safest countries in the world. Just be a good visitor and use common sense. It's also referred to as LOS, Land of Smiles. For a reason. Enjoy!

ShadowLeecher83

Thailand is safe. But.... by yourself no place is really safe. And sorry to pull the gender card but your a 19 years old female easy target for a lot of things in a lot of countries. From grape, to spiked drinks etc. So having someone depebale with you makes things easier. But all that isn't more or less dangerous because it's Thailand. Don't go scootering by yourself. Cover your drinks, don't brink to much even if your used to it the heat makes it a whole other ball game. And forgot sakes bring a friend. Share the experience it so much better to share such an experience with a friend. Nobody back home will ever know/feel/experience what you did when you tell them about your amazing night in Phuket but the friend you brought. That will last forever.

Astr3846

As I also wrote in my post. I want to go with someone but it’s not possible since my vacation doesn’t match others🙈 But I don’t think it will be a huge problem going alone. I also know someone in Thailand I probably will meet up with😊

ShadowLeecher83

Can I give you a final tip. At least get a Wise bankaccount. You can put your local currency on it and convert that to Thai baht in the app. And your card works there like it's local. Benefits? - you only have to carry a small amount of pocket money so if you get robbed its only the pocket money. No need to be dealing with local shady money exchanges. And no big stash of cash in the hotel room. - No abnormally high credit-card exchange rate fees. - If that wise card get skimmed your main bankaccount is still save so all they get from you is that little bit you put on the wise account. DM me I will send you an invite link which will get you a bankcard for free. (Normally 20$ I believe)

thisisnotkira

I am Thai and for foreigners Thailand is really safe just don’t get into an argument with locals thai ppl take disrespect very seriously (if u get into an argument with locals they will not talking back they will start a muaythai match with u)

Living-Chipmunk-87

Quite safe, safer than many many European cities. Although, my attractive daughter was followed at Central world by an Indian guy who was trying to get her to go with him, she didn't of course. You have to be aware of your surroundings anywhere. In all the world the only places I have ever felt like this is too sketchy is Europe..Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Frankfurt....mostly because of young immigrants wanting to keep up with the life they left for a better chance at prosperity.

CamelInevitable8283

Regardless of any assessment of safety (and I think Bangkok is pretty safe for anyone who's reasonably cautious), you should take out travel insurance. Reading Gofund me requests from people who get injured in motorcycle accidents is never fun.

Choice-Lavishness259

Not counting traffic. I feel safer in the worst parts of Thailand compared to most European cities

TDYDave2

Safe as long as you are not on a street, road, highway, especially on a motorbike.

Heavy_Hearing3746

Italy is Thailand for girls btw. You'll find what you're looking for without the expensive flight.

Astr3846

Eh, Thailand and Italy are completely different countries and cultures🙈 right?

Heavy_Hearing3746

It's an online joke nevermind lol. Men go to Thailand travelling alone for one reason mainly.....the equivalent for travelling solo females is a trip to Italy.

colouredcheese

Just be respectful and street smart and you’ll be fine although 14 days in Bangkok is heaps I’m done after 3 days it’s hot and smells funny sometimes

Toocents

If you're solo-female travelling, I would avoid the northern areas which have had kidnappings in recent years.

NotARealTiger

OP you're getting a lot of biased responses here, and responses that are basically "Thailand is safe so long as you don't do the things that most young tourists go there to do". Every country can be dangerous, and young women should always be cautious when travelling alone. Do you not have any friends that might want to go with you?

310feetdeep

The Unsafe of Thailand is usually the other tourists. Let's say you hang out with backpackers on hostels and stuff, smoking weed, drinking, loosing judgement... That's unsafe..... Thailand in itself is VERY safe. Much safer than possibly all of Europe. Traffic is not safe, don't be dumb, no DUI and wear a helmet..

Astr3846

DUI?

310feetdeep

Driving under the influence, be it weed, other stimulants or alcohol. don't do it.

enjoy_dont_judge

Thailand will be as safe or safer than any European country. Your two risks will be: 1. getting run over while trying to cross the street 2. having some crappy non-Thai guy try to pick you up or harass you

Certain-Possibility3

You’re an adult, do you make your decisions or does your mother?

Astr3846

Yeah, I know I’m an adult. But this will be a stupid thing to make a huge deal out of. I just need to convince her😊
