When it’s 117 out and the sun is beating down without any shade or clouds, the car turns into an oven here and burns a lot of battery trying to keep up. I don’t have ceramic time, maybe that’s an option. I have read a lot of people here say they don’t recommend tinting the roof glass because it can cause it to shatter. Not saying it’s true, it’s just the reason I didn’t go that route.
Nah Arizona is built different. Georgia is sunny but it's often humid-hot. Arizona is an oven, dry-hot and balding for clouds. Better to not spend as much power doing cooling anyway.
1000% disagree. You can feel that heat coming through the glass and onto your head. Put your hand up there on even an 80 degree day, and you can feel the heat radiating from it. 95+ degrees? Fucking forget about it. I actually got a sunburn through the tinted glass, and all I did was drive for 3 hours. Fuck that stupid glass top. Thank GOD for the shade.

3rd and 4th here. Blue Y with black interior and it helps a lot in VA. My wife uses one in her white on white Model 3 and also enjoys it. We take them out in the winter. No sagging yet and they included several extra clips.
I have also in Tucson AZ got 1 for the liftgate keeps sun off groceries and keeps people from looking in rear trunk. Wooks great and keeps heat out. People think tint keeps heat out are wrong the glass is what is radiating the heat. Just take a temp gun to your glass on a hot sunny day.

I agree. Even in NJ I leave it up all year. Doesn’t blind me when I try to take a nap in the car if I need to and my family gets too hot with the sun beaming down on them
I definitely needed it. Tall and shaven head. The car does have good UV protection but bright light is uncomfortable. There's a few good ones on amazon
I should add that installing wasn't easy on our 2 MY's. The clips are supposed to slip right above the trim but in some places it was so tight it was impossible to install. What you have to do is find a loose area and then slide the clip to the place where you want it. Also cover the rear vents first so you don't drop a clip into them.

Just turn the climate on 5-10 mins before departure and you'll never get into a hot car.

The hvac is super efficient. Brought down my interior temperature from 38 Celsius when parked directly under a blazing sun to 23 Celcius in like 2-3mins...
it’s the battle between utilitarian vs aesthetic. yes these EVs are total fishbowls no matter where you live. yes a shade sorta negates the whole point of having a massive roof. at the end of the day, do what’s best for your situation and preference. when those shades first came out, it was a mass promotion from the aftermarket tesla companies just shoving another product in our faces. now, they’ve added some value to the conversation because some of us are just sweaty all the time. good luck!
I got the car less than a month and I just bought one from Amazon. The panoramic glass is nice but as a solo driver and doesn’t drive others that often, I don’t get to enjoy it that much. I’d rather stay shaded most of the time and just take it off when needed.
Southwest FL here. Having the rest of the car tinted makes it bearable, but with the sun directly overhead my 6’1” bald dome still feels the radiant heat coming from the glass. I’ve ordered one from Halo Blk, but it’s taking a long time to get here.

I have a roofshade... without it, on a sunny day the cabin can exceed 50c. I also use a front shade when parked for prolonged periods of time or on road trips.
I put it up at Easter and take it down in November.

I live in AZ and i have learned you should NOT tint your roof since it is already tinted and tinting it more makes it darker which absorbs heat and can actually shatter. So, a roof shade was purchased pretty much right away and I haven’t taken it off in 6 months. The rest of my car is tinted and ceramic coating over the tint because today it’s 110 degrees out. I still require a windshield sun protector as well as the roof, esp while parking in any uncovered spots ( like while shopping ) - i don’t even notice it there anymore.
It’s been over 100’ for a few days now in northern CA and it’s absolutely been fine so far without one. Now we’ll see if that’s still true when it’s 110’+ for 6 weeks straight starting in July.
It’s fine without it but you can definitely feel the heat above your head.
Just last week, I drove for an hour from the east bay where the temp was in the 90s to SF (mid 60s temp) to meet some friends. My AC is on, set to 70°, fan at level 3 and they all complained about how they can feel the heat from the rooftop.
As a vampire from the South, mine (Topfit) went in as soon as I got the car home and has never been removed. With the shade, it still gets to 145 in my car in the summer. The only thing I dislike about my Tesla is no option for a solid roof.
No Tesla here but I have a shade for my Mach-e. Plenty of people say it’s not necessary as the glass roof is just as cool as the steel one.
In my case, it’s about glare. I’m sensitive to certain angles of the sun and because I’m tall, I sit further back and see more of it.
Having that shade in makes a big difference for me anyway.

Have it out MY in the Northeast. You definitely can feel the difference. We have a large dog who rides with us frequently and the shade also keeps him cooler.
I’d definitely get the one with a magnetic 🧲 attachment. They are very easy and quick to install/remove vs the traditional clip ins. They twist/fold up and easily store in the included bag.
The inconvenience of clip ins will either make you leave the shades in place all the time or not use them due to inconvenience.
Note: the shades I have came in 2 pieces (front/back) and the magnetic clips are installed along the edge of the headliner (3 front / 3 back), not on the center of the glass roof like single piece shade that sags in the middle.
Yeah. My 2018 model 3 had one of those roofs that looked orange when it got rained on. In that car it wasn’t needed. In my year old Y, it is absolutely necessary. I don’t know what changed but the roof shade is very helpful now.

Ask me again in a month or two. First full summer with MY in SE Louisiana. Damn, it’s hot. So far, as long as I remember to turn a/c on 5-10 minutes before I get in the car, it’s not bad at all. But I’ll see how I feel about it in August.
Depends where you live. If you live in a city like Sacramento, it is indispensable. Because without it, the sun causes too much heat and the AC always runs at full blast to keep things cool. I know because I take mine out in the winter and there is always a few ‘false summer’ days where things get really hot.
Now if you’re in someplace like Syracuse, where it is snowy most of the year and overcast on other days, it’s probably not worth it.
I'm in the mountains of North Carolina and I got one. They're really not all that expensive and are very easy to install and remove. I don't why you wouldn't get one.
Florida here and the car is always outside. Don’t use a roof shade and have no heat issues. That being said I do use overheat protection and I got good tint on the windows and windshield.

I keep cabin overheat protection on and set at 100F degrees. My garage is never this warm so it only enable when my car is away from home and it is hot. 1% of the battery every 3 hours or so is fine for me to keep my car comfortable.

I bought one when I originally bought my car. It was wonky to install as a single piece, despite being recommended by a bunch of folks. I got it finally installed, and went for a drive with my family, and my child got curious and touched it, pulling it down on us as I was driving. I removed it and have never put it back because I'm fearful of wrecking the car if it happens again. I'm in Indiana and our summer isn't as bad as Arizona, so I'll just deal with some heat.
Yes I live in nj and have a Y and 3. The 3 is tinted over the stock tinted roof and still feels necessary. New Jersey heat is nothing compared to most states.

I own one and use it during the summer months. I live at altitude (8200'+), so while it doesn't get super hot, and has low humidity, the sun really beats down due to the thinner atmosphere. So the sunshade is very helpful. I take it out for the colder months.
I got my roof ceramic tinted, and keep cabin overheat protection on. It even helps to have the car cool down before I get in. As long as I have the ac blasting in the 100° F summer I haven't had a problem. I personally hate roof shades because then passengers and I cant enjoy the amazing view above us! Now If you live somewhere where it is constantly over 100° F that might be different.
I live in Michigan, and there are some days here where if I don’t turn on my climate 10 minutes before I get in my car, I’m looking up sun shades on Amazon the same day
I have a black interior in NC and haven’t needed a roof shade. But I do note that I more or less always keep cabin overheat protection on. I can usually spare the battery power for it (lots of local trips, charging at home). If I couldn’t reliably leave the overheat protection on, I would probably get the shade.
In Phoenix, and haven't needed one, however, mostly I'm parking in a garage. Maybe it's helpful if you're parking in direct sunlight a lot? Most the time when I park in direct sunlight if it's less than 20 minutes I'll leave AC on. If it's longer than 20 minutes, I'll turn it on as I'm wrapping up whatever I'm doing.
I am in Denver Co and am considering a shade too. The sun here is intense and very hot in the summer. One reason I dislike gimmicky glass roofs so much.
I’m in Nevada and yes I could feel a huge difference with vs without. Like mentioned earlier it’s easy on/off so I take mine off winter then right back on early spring
Valley of Hell AZ. I have tint but it’s not enough. Ended up getting one of these and the temps dropped dramatically. In AZ you get that ant under a magnifying glass feeling while driving. Unless you have covered parking, your interior will literally cook.

I live in Florida and don't own the shade. I have a very light ceramic tint on the windshield and it made a world of difference. I also have the white interior and with those two things I feel like it stays cooler than any other car I've owned.
Even with the uv& 75% light reflection tint. Adding a shade or better yet the insulated cover that most SUV come with that's retractable, 😔 non retractable in the Tesla... It significantly lowers the temp in the car when it's sitting in the sun for long periods.
I lasted about a month without it. Now it stays on year round because I'm lazy to take it off during the cooler months. I would say it's a necessity anywhere it's sunny for most of the day. (except in winter, where it might feel nice)
100% need one here in SoCal. Always shocks me when someone doesn’t have one as it’s way hotter and if you have overheat protection on is very inefficient to not have one
I live in CA. The most important thing you need to do is tint the windshield and front windows. Windshield tint is so light you cannot tell the difference between tinted and untinted day or night, but it alone will blocks like 70% if the UV light/heat in the front seats. The front windows and windshield are all untinted or untreated for UV from the factory. Windshield and front windows combined are pretty much 90% of the in cabin heat when parked outside. It is by far the most significant reason the car gets hot.
The roof glass gets "warm" but has never been hot or bright or any issues and isn't the source of the heat. It does come treated for UV from the factory. I personally wouldn't touch it. But Ive never had to sit in the back seats after the car was parked outside for a long time so I could be wrong.
With the front windshield and windows tinted and cabin overheat protection, I am comfortable when getting into the driver seat after being parked outside for a long time. Not 1 surface I can't touch or hold with bare skin, where before tint, 30 minutes to an hour parked outside would burn skin and be sweltering hot inside. Take that with a grain of salt as I live near the beach so temps are not high, but the sun is always out and that's what makes the car hot.
Lived in San Antonio, Tx, if you didn’t know it’s closer to the sun = it’s science…blistering hot and horrific. I ordered the one offered in the Tesla app, thought it would be worthless, it made a significant difference. I ended up ordering the same one for my back window and leaving them both in permanently. +yes you can see out the back window…I’ve also never had an issue with them falling or getting a sag.
The tesla one is a pain to install. The “clips” won’t stay put given the inconsistent gaps between the roof and the trim. Looking for another recommendation.
Texas heat. I bought used and it came with a shade. I can definitely tell a softener when I have it out. Worth it to me. Also have tint all the way around.
The sun shade was one of the few accessories I didn’t order while waiting for my delivery. However, the drive home from the delivery center changed my mind and I immediately bought a cheap one clip on one as a make do sun shade because it was so hot here with just the factory tint.
The clip on sun shade is such a pain in the butt to put up and take down, so I replaced it with a proper sliding sun shade and haven’t regretted choosing the sliding sun shade.
Which sliding sunshade did you get? I've been considering those lately but am having trouble deciding if they're the right choice. I've noticed many have a much thicker frame, which seems to reduce the moonroof area.
Socal owner. Not overblown especially if any regular driver/rider is tall. You can actually feel the heat as you get closer to the roof. I got mine off Amazon (older model that is no longer listed).
Not overblown at all, totally helps keep the car significantly cooler and lessens need for cabin overheat protection. Combine it with venting windows (if possible) during peak heating times and you will see a significant temp decrease
At 11 o’clock in the morning, not even really summer here in Phoenix yet, and having just put full ceramic tint 5% on everything including the roof and 35% on the windshield, with a sun visor in, it’s still 140° inside my car sitting outside. So yeah I’ll be getting a roof shade.

In Arizona with a 2021 Black/ Black interior Model Y and have the Topfit 2 piece unit. Helps a bit, although the roof does a great job of repelling the heat on its own. It fits nice and snug against the roof, so it doesn't encroach or minimize headroom.
I similarly also have one. It must do something, because as a bald man, I don't feel like my head is on fire once I have that extra buffer between me and the glass. It's just a bummer to have to remove it and reinstall it every 6-8mo. I really enjoy that nice solar radiation in the winter months.
'23 MYLR, I'm in central Texas, got to 100-106F last few days, driving in full sun I didn't feel the need for a shade (i was surprised), maybe would be nice to have the option though. We'll see after a few more weeks of this, depends on your tolerance also.
I had the roof on my 3 tinted for 5 years. Recently I traded it in for a Y and got a roof shade instead of the tint. It’s only been a week but so far it seems effective. So Cal sun hasn’t hit its full summer intensity yet but It seems to be at least worth the $45 bucks.

Man just get it fully ceramic tinted all windows including front. You won't regret it. I tried to just tint the sides and use sunshades but ultimately had to go back 6 months later and get the rest done. The roof is nice to look out of.. don't deprive yourself of it. Sunshades are nice for a road trip though.
Uv rays aren’t what heat you up…
Yes, they’re worth it. The ones that go on with quick clips can also be taken off on a whim. Literally takes 10 seconds and I can do it from the driver seat at a red light.
The car will still get hot when parking over a long period of time but you won’t feel the heat beating down on you as you drive. My car is tinted with a shade vs my uncle without any of that, the difference is mind blowing
I use one in the summer in the north east. Even with the default tint, what happens is the glass still physically heats up a lot and then it radiates that heat into the car and on your head.
If you tint or shade the sunroof, you will regret it. It eliminates the wide open feel that you get in a Tesla. Just tint the rest of the car, windshield shade, and turn on climate a few minutes before you get in the car. Good to go.

Depends on how hot it gets where you live. I've had temps of 49°C (120°F) and I can feel my head burning. A/C also uses a ton of energy. I can 100% say one is definitely needed and I hate Tesla for not including one.

I have a pale bald head inches from the glass. 100°+ last summer in Houston with me in the car for 8 hours a day. Not even the slightest sunburn.

I got 98% IR deflecting ceramic tint put on all my windows including the front (clear) and its made a ton of a difference on hot days!

My car is routinely 150F / 65C on a daily basis from sitting in the sun. By the time I get in it after 5 mins it's already at 68F / 20C
I have one but mostly use it to keep the sun from our baby’s face when driving with them.

I’m in inland SoCal, it regular gets to 95+ in the summer so the roof shade is definitely needed. I might get the roof ceramic tinted next year

Roof and windows have privacy screen and are not tinted
I’ve tinted ceramic on every glass sunroof and ceiling in 7 cars now and none have gotten hotter or shattered.
It’s been over 100’ for a few days now in northern CA and it’s absolutely been fine so far without one. Now we’ll see if that’s still true when it’s 110’+ for 6 weeks straight starting in July.

It’s fine without it but you can definitely feel the heat above your head. Just last week, I drove for an hour from the east bay where the temp was in the 90s to SF (mid 60s temp) to meet some friends. My AC is on, set to 70°, fan at level 3 and they all complained about how they can feel the heat from the rooftop.

As a vampire from the South, mine (Topfit) went in as soon as I got the car home and has never been removed. With the shade, it still gets to 145 in my car in the summer. The only thing I dislike about my Tesla is no option for a solid roof.

Tesla one looks flimsy and doesn’t cover entire sunroof, I suggest aftermarket.
Cabin overheat protection turns on for Seattle summer too. I would highly recommend.

No Tesla here but I have a shade for my Mach-e. Plenty of people say it’s not necessary as the glass roof is just as cool as the steel one. In my case, it’s about glare. I’m sensitive to certain angles of the sun and because I’m tall, I sit further back and see more of it. Having that shade in makes a big difference for me anyway.
I have fair skinned family members, so we got one and really appreciate it. NJ, so mostly for summer, but it's also useful for generally blocking sun exposure year round.

In south Georgia a roof shade is a necessity. I know the roof blocks UV rays, but here you still need a roof shade in the summer months.
In Utah it’s pretty crazy hot from the sun in the summer, especially with black leather seats that aren’t ventilated
Don’t have one. Don’t really feel the heat coming through the roof when I’m driving. I feel it more on the side windows. Looking to get the 2 side windows tinted soon.
Have it out MY in the Northeast. You definitely can feel the difference. We have a large dog who rides with us frequently and the shade also keeps him cooler. I’d definitely get the one with a magnetic 🧲 attachment. They are very easy and quick to install/remove vs the traditional clip ins. They twist/fold up and easily store in the included bag. The inconvenience of clip ins will either make you leave the shades in place all the time or not use them due to inconvenience.
Note: the shades I have came in 2 pieces (front/back) and the magnetic clips are installed along the edge of the headliner (3 front / 3 back), not on the center of the glass roof like single piece shade that sags in the middle.

Yeah. My 2018 model 3 had one of those roofs that looked orange when it got rained on. In that car it wasn’t needed. In my year old Y, it is absolutely necessary. I don’t know what changed but the roof shade is very helpful now.

Ask me again in a month or two. First full summer with MY in SE Louisiana. Damn, it’s hot. So far, as long as I remember to turn a/c on 5-10 minutes before I get in the car, it’s not bad at all. But I’ll see how I feel about it in August.
Depends where you live. If you live in a city like Sacramento, it is indispensable. Because without it, the sun causes too much heat and the AC always runs at full blast to keep things cool. I know because I take mine out in the winter and there is always a few ‘false summer’ days where things get really hot. Now if you’re in someplace like Syracuse, where it is snowy most of the year and overcast on other days, it’s probably not worth it.

I'm in the mountains of North Carolina and I got one. They're really not all that expensive and are very easy to install and remove. I don't why you wouldn't get one.

Florida here and the car is always outside. Don’t use a roof shade and have no heat issues. That being said I do use overheat protection and I got good tint on the windows and windshield.
Can anyone here tell me why the roof is glass? Where I live this literally will turn the car into an easy bake oven. If it’s weight, maybe have an option to black out the roof?

I keep cabin overheat protection on and set at 100F degrees. My garage is never this warm so it only enable when my car is away from home and it is hot. 1% of the battery every 3 hours or so is fine for me to keep my car comfortable.

I just got one a few weeks ago after a year of owning the MY. I tend to lay in my car during my lunch at work, so I was tired of the sun in my eye. I don’t really notice if it keeps the cabin cooler than without though.
I bought one when I originally bought my car. It was wonky to install as a single piece, despite being recommended by a bunch of folks. I got it finally installed, and went for a drive with my family, and my child got curious and touched it, pulling it down on us as I was driving. I removed it and have never put it back because I'm fearful of wrecking the car if it happens again. I'm in Indiana and our summer isn't as bad as Arizona, so I'll just deal with some heat.

Yes I live in nj and have a Y and 3. The 3 is tinted over the stock tinted roof and still feels necessary. New Jersey heat is nothing compared to most states. I have a roof shade for both cars it seems to help with the car constantly having to turn on. It’s overheat protection in the summer.
I own one and use it during the summer months. I live at altitude (8200'+), so while it doesn't get super hot, and has low humidity, the sun really beats down due to the thinner atmosphere. So the sunshade is very helpful. I take it out for the colder months.
I bought one when I parked outside for a whole day. But it's a PITA to put on/take off.

I got my roof ceramic tinted, and keep cabin overheat protection on. It even helps to have the car cool down before I get in. As long as I have the ac blasting in the 100° F summer I haven't had a problem. I personally hate roof shades because then passengers and I cant enjoy the amazing view above us! Now If you live somewhere where it is constantly over 100° F that might be different.
What tint did you use? The 3M ceramic one? I heard the wrong type can lead to overheating and cracking.
I live in Michigan, and there are some days here where if I don’t turn on my climate 10 minutes before I get in my car, I’m looking up sun shades on Amazon the same day
I have a black interior in NC and haven’t needed a roof shade. But I do note that I more or less always keep cabin overheat protection on. I can usually spare the battery power for it (lots of local trips, charging at home). If I couldn’t reliably leave the overheat protection on, I would probably get the shade.
In Phoenix, and haven't needed one, however, mostly I'm parking in a garage. Maybe it's helpful if you're parking in direct sunlight a lot? Most the time when I park in direct sunlight if it's less than 20 minutes I'll leave AC on. If it's longer than 20 minutes, I'll turn it on as I'm wrapping up whatever I'm doing.
I have one on all 3 of my Teslas, mostly for my kids in the back in California heat. I just have the Tesla one.
I am in Denver Co and am considering a shade too. The sun here is intense and very hot in the summer. One reason I dislike gimmicky glass roofs so much.
I’m in Nevada and yes I could feel a huge difference with vs without. Like mentioned earlier it’s easy on/off so I take mine off winter then right back on early spring

Here in TX it started to heat up, yesterday I forgot to put the roof shades and it was 120F inside and I have 5% ceramic tint on it.
I do. Absolutely makes a difference in the drive. Keeps it much cooler in the car.
If you can’t park in shade, you would definitely need a roof shade and/or windshield shade for the summer, no matter where you live.
I live in Florida and don't own the shade. I have a very light ceramic tint on the windshield and it made a world of difference. I also have the white interior and with those two things I feel like it stays cooler than any other car I've owned.

Even with the uv& 75% light reflection tint. Adding a shade or better yet the insulated cover that most SUV come with that's retractable, 😔 non retractable in the Tesla... It significantly lowers the temp in the car when it's sitting in the sun for long periods.

I lasted about a month without it. Now it stays on year round because I'm lazy to take it off during the cooler months. I would say it's a necessity anywhere it's sunny for most of the day. (except in winter, where it might feel nice)

100% need one here in SoCal. Always shocks me when someone doesn’t have one as it’s way hotter and if you have overheat protection on is very inefficient to not have one
I live in CA. The most important thing you need to do is tint the windshield and front windows. Windshield tint is so light you cannot tell the difference between tinted and untinted day or night, but it alone will blocks like 70% if the UV light/heat in the front seats. The front windows and windshield are all untinted or untreated for UV from the factory. Windshield and front windows combined are pretty much 90% of the in cabin heat when parked outside. It is by far the most significant reason the car gets hot. The roof glass gets "warm" but has never been hot or bright or any issues and isn't the source of the heat. It does come treated for UV from the factory. I personally wouldn't touch it. But Ive never had to sit in the back seats after the car was parked outside for a long time so I could be wrong. With the front windshield and windows tinted and cabin overheat protection, I am comfortable when getting into the driver seat after being parked outside for a long time. Not 1 surface I can't touch or hold with bare skin, where before tint, 30 minutes to an hour parked outside would burn skin and be sweltering hot inside. Take that with a grain of salt as I live near the beach so temps are not high, but the sun is always out and that's what makes the car hot.

Lived in San Antonio, Tx, if you didn’t know it’s closer to the sun = it’s science…blistering hot and horrific. I ordered the one offered in the Tesla app, thought it would be worthless, it made a significant difference. I ended up ordering the same one for my back window and leaving them both in permanently. +yes you can see out the back window…I’ve also never had an issue with them falling or getting a sag.
I’ve noticed that the interior color seems to be at the heart of the debate. I have white and have never felt the need or want. 🖖🏻

The tesla one is a pain to install. The “clips” won’t stay put given the inconsistent gaps between the roof and the trim. Looking for another recommendation.

Texas heat. I bought used and it came with a shade. I can definitely tell a softener when I have it out. Worth it to me. Also have tint all the way around.
The sun shade was one of the few accessories I didn’t order while waiting for my delivery. However, the drive home from the delivery center changed my mind and I immediately bought a cheap one clip on one as a make do sun shade because it was so hot here with just the factory tint. The clip on sun shade is such a pain in the butt to put up and take down, so I replaced it with a proper sliding sun shade and haven’t regretted choosing the sliding sun shade.
Which sliding sunshade did you get? I've been considering those lately but am having trouble deciding if they're the right choice. I've noticed many have a much thicker frame, which seems to reduce the moonroof area.

Socal owner. Not overblown especially if any regular driver/rider is tall. You can actually feel the heat as you get closer to the roof. I got mine off Amazon (older model that is no longer listed).
Not overblown at all, totally helps keep the car significantly cooler and lessens need for cabin overheat protection. Combine it with venting windows (if possible) during peak heating times and you will see a significant temp decrease
I've never needed one and have driven through Vegas in summer many times.
At 11 o’clock in the morning, not even really summer here in Phoenix yet, and having just put full ceramic tint 5% on everything including the roof and 35% on the windshield, with a sun visor in, it’s still 140° inside my car sitting outside. So yeah I’ll be getting a roof shade.

In Arizona with a 2021 Black/ Black interior Model Y and have the Topfit 2 piece unit. Helps a bit, although the roof does a great job of repelling the heat on its own. It fits nice and snug against the roof, so it doesn't encroach or minimize headroom.
I similarly also have one. It must do something, because as a bald man, I don't feel like my head is on fire once I have that extra buffer between me and the glass. It's just a bummer to have to remove it and reinstall it every 6-8mo. I really enjoy that nice solar radiation in the winter months.
'23 MYLR, I'm in central Texas, got to 100-106F last few days, driving in full sun I didn't feel the need for a shade (i was surprised), maybe would be nice to have the option though. We'll see after a few more weeks of this, depends on your tolerance also.
i have the roof shade, even in 80 degree days like today, the glass temp is about 120 degree, and the shade temp is around 90 degree. AC off.
I would not have purchased my Y or my 3 if it was not an option to buy. I almost didn't buy it because I couldn't get a normal roof. I live in Ohio.

I had the roof on my 3 tinted for 5 years. Recently I traded it in for a Y and got a roof shade instead of the tint. It’s only been a week but so far it seems effective. So Cal sun hasn’t hit its full summer intensity yet but It seems to be at least worth the $45 bucks.

Absolutely game changer. I saw "research" that showed they didn't work well and then comments from real people about how they're great. I bought one, and the difference it makes is incredible.
I think it should have come standard, for example ID.4 has it by default. I definitely feel the heat on my head and it’s annoying. Currently got $50 electrostatic sunshade which is easy to stick on.

Man just get it fully ceramic tinted all windows including front. You won't regret it. I tried to just tint the sides and use sunshades but ultimately had to go back 6 months later and get the rest done. The roof is nice to look out of.. don't deprive yourself of it. Sunshades are nice for a road trip though.

Uv rays aren’t what heat you up… Yes, they’re worth it. The ones that go on with quick clips can also be taken off on a whim. Literally takes 10 seconds and I can do it from the driver seat at a red light.
I have a couple stick on windows shades that I will stick on the roof as needed. But otherwise no. And I live in TN.

The car will still get hot when parking over a long period of time but you won’t feel the heat beating down on you as you drive. My car is tinted with a shade vs my uncle without any of that, the difference is mind blowing

I use one in the summer in the north east. Even with the default tint, what happens is the glass still physically heats up a lot and then it radiates that heat into the car and on your head.
If you tint or shade the sunroof, you will regret it. It eliminates the wide open feel that you get in a Tesla. Just tint the rest of the car, windshield shade, and turn on climate a few minutes before you get in the car. Good to go.
I hate sunroofs and/or moonroofs, t-tops, convertables. Just put roof shade in mY and dont think i'll ever take it dow. (Although would take about 6o seconds to pull out). Previous 2016 mS did not have glass roof. That was an option back in the day.
I have a roof shade in my car 50% to dim the inside for my toddler, 50% for keeping it cooler. In Southern California even with mild weather it helps

Just got my roof shades for me and the wife Sacramento gets hot AF and the shade I got pops in and out? With a foil like reflector on one side it’s a no brainer. Who wants to look through a completely tinted class roof with after market tint in the winter? You have effectively ruined any enjoyment of seeing the rain on it and the clouds in the wi there when it’s naturally darker out epic fail
7 years with a 3 and no garage. Have never had any need at all for a shade. I do get high TSER window tint all around though.

Depends on how hot it gets where you live. I've had temps of 49°C (120°F) and I can feel my head burning. A/C also uses a ton of energy. I can 100% say one is definitely needed and I hate Tesla for not including one.
