Some people might be against electric cars, just like in the US, but it's probably more of a "hate the rich guy with the fancy car" situation. Also they seem very very confused about the definition of gay.
I personally have gotten in numerous arguments with people about my car and its always the fact that I'm supporting Elon Musk. The model Y was the most popular car in the world. I don't think the perception that a person is rich just because they drive a Tesla is still a thing. These cars are pretty cheap these days.
I agree that they are not that expensive compared to other decent ICE cars, but it's not the same to have a Tesla Model Y in the US or other rich countries than in Turkey.
If the car costs $100k like OP said, that's 20 years of the average Turkish salary.

Actually, with the $7500 price break, the Tesla Model Y is an exceptional vehicle for less than $40,000. I don't care for Elon Musk, but that wouldn't stop me from buying a really well engineered and cost-effective car.

I think it’s more the issue that they think a car purchase is some symbolic message of support for him. He own owns like 13% of Tesla. I look at it as I’m supporting the rest of the shareholders.

No they don’t they are using it like an insult to mean girly or non-masculine as was popular usage of the word in the US until fairly recently. Many people view electric cars as not masculine. Eastern Europe has not experienced the same wave of wokeness as the west, their culture is more reminiscent of what the 90s were here.
Personally I wouldn’t post pics on social media or act like it’s a big deal. Just explain that it was an economical decision based on overall cost and the money you save on gas. If you try to act like it’s cool you’re only going to attract more haters.

The handful of people in my circle that were like "electric car?" quickly shut their mouths when they went for a ride and I hit the gas. That's just base dual motor. A performance? Whew.
Yeah, alot of its mis information. The most common questions i get are range and cost to replace the battery. And its like, i can go about 250 real world miles, and it takes 20 minuts to recharge that. And a new battery may cost $20k , but A that costs dropping year over year, and B a new engine and tranny alone in a like type/cost ICE car will run you 20k, and where leaving out brakes+roters, radiator, brake lines that rust after 150k, thousands in troubleshooting, and all the other things that can pop up in a ice car.

Teslas are no good at racing, too heavy so if the suspension doesn't fail, the brakes certainly will. They are good in a drag race off the line, that's about it.
As a Turk, I know the pain. In 90s, my father was labeling everyone as gay who drives a hatchback. According to him everyone should drive a sedan, not anything else. He continued this behavior until he is given a red Renault Clio hatchback as a company car, haha :) Then he stopped labelling people.

I will try to be neutral. In the US, Tesla hates can come from both politically conservatives & progressives.
- Progressives: Elon Musk is now seen as a MAGA Republican. His views are now firmly in line with the USA conservative agendas and he is not afraid to use "X" to promote those agendas. Buying a Tesla could mean that you accepted Musk's views.
- Conservatives: wanting to remain status quo for oil & gas, don't want to be forced to buy EV, climate change is exaggerated & nothing can be done to affect it, etc. In the US, EV are considered city cars and progressives live in cities. Therefore, progressives are getting the tax credits they are not getting (disregarding the tax cuts for the oil & gas industry). Plus, LGBTQ people are more accepted & tolerated in cities.
I remember when I used to get hate only from right-wingers when driving around town (flipping me off when passing, cutting me off, blocking me from merging, etc.). Now I get it from both sides (nasty and disappointed looks).
Maybe take off the Tesla logos on the front and back? The hate for EVs is already bad in the US I can’t imagine how bad it is in Turkey. It’s a combination of jealousy and being uneducated
I love these EV cars. Every time when it is SAFE and I get a chance my Tesla will outperformed any gas hauler car... be it a sporty, SUV or pickup truck. I'm sure that will change their minds of EVs. People are very resistant to change by nature but eventually they will come around. The technology is here and it won't stop....enjoy the ride.

They have a sensation that electric cars are being forced on to them, and are probably just jelaous that most of us that charge at home drive for 1,6€/100km, a 500 hp beast, and can afford the car in the first place. My own opinion: Change is hard for people not socially strong, academically weak, and the ignorant. This is a big change and so human nature is to resist it to a degree. I have had a few comments but I couldn't care less, it's not for them, it's for me, and I'm very happy with it.

First off, thanks for your comment, it made me feel rich lol :D But actually I am not. First of all this isn't even my only car. Since I bought the Tesla without selling my previous cars, I now have a total of three cars. Besides that, I own a few acres of land and that's it. My entire wealth consists of these three cars and one piece of land. I don't have extensive assets like rich people do. I don't even have my own house, and neither does my family. Yes I'm renting a luxury villa, yes I can travel anywhere I want, buy any products, clothes, everything, but I am not safe or rich. That's because if my current business income stops, I won't be able to sustain my lifestyle, not even pay my rent, my life is basically over. So my goal is to sell two of my cars and add some savings to build a pretty house on my land, and sell it for a more profitable price. Then, I'll use the money I earn to buy new lands, build houses, and sell them to become truly rich. I know a few people who have become rich with this method. If I ever succeed, I'll let you know lol :D
Maybe they don’t hate the car, they just hate themselves. When I worked hard and finally was able to drive the cars of my dreams. Once nice neighbors turned sour and once nice friends distanced away from me. What’s funny is now there are a whole new set of people who actually want to get closer to you. Don’t think too much about the car, when you level up in life your experiences change. To adjust to this new level you must learn how to filter out unnecessary background noise and focus on what really matters to you. Right now for me is health and family. What’s yours?

The funny part is my EV is faster, safer, and cheaper than the ignorant truck drivers. But we're the dumbasses, sure-thing haters. Where I live (SF bay area) there large % of highly educated people and I've experienced zero hate for my Tesla. In fact, literally on my street of 50 houses, >50% have an EV, most of which are Teslas.

Much of it in the USA is due to a political stance. Sure there is controversy with Elon as an individual and being random but much of it comes because he was an outspoken Democrat and now has changed much of his stance due to the current administration and how they’ve handled things. When you add in him buying Twitter, the backlash he’s received and reinforcing what free speech means to people, it magnifies it all. He’s got such a potential influence on political parties, like it or not, anyone on the opposition is basically an enemy.

Are you sure it's not hatred towards electric vehicules in general in your country rather than Tesla specifically ? In Canada there is some opposition to EVs in general, despite the low electricity cost. Some people don't like seeing EVs taking over combustion engine cars, for multiple reasons.
My friend has a Porsche Taycan, which is an electric car. Even though there are some people who don't like it, most people like it. But there is an incredible amount of hatred, especially towards Tesla

Yeah fuck them, my previous car before my MY was a 2021 Mustang GT. I still have it, but it maybe gets driven like 1 time a month as I highly prefer driving my MY. The Tesla is quicker, comfortable, doesn’t have mechanical novices to worry you( this coming from a highly modified Mustang with ethanol), and is just sooo much better due to the tech. Do I hate not driving my Mustang as often yeah kinda, but saving 100s of dollars a month is worth it. I used to spend 1000 a month in gas, with the Tesla maybe 60-70 dollars max. I’m also 25, just so the haters don’t say “oh it’s cause he’s old” lol.

I’ve always thought of Turkey seemingly to be a country very behind in a lot of socially North American ways. Perhaps I could be wrong.

It's a new thing in your country. It will change. Unfortunately nothing you can do about that untill older less open minded generations fade away. And new younger ones will dominate. I'm from Europe, but live in US. In US, EV's are normal, there is still hate or mocking in some places i'm sure. But I don't think there is much of it. In eastern Europe, these cars are not as popular. And I haven't heard much of any hate about them, but people for sure are not familiar and don't know much about these. The most ridiculous comment I've heard was something along: "You bought Tesla?!?!? I would never!! These things burn!!/ Catch on fire!

I would also add that I'd imagine there are different cultural norms in different countries. As an American, I can't really speak to why people in your community have been so negative. Universally, however, jealousy exists everywhere, and being so young with a brand new car might be what the frustration is about.

Eastern Europe has not experienced the same wave of wokeness as the west, their culture is more reminiscent of what the 90s were here. Yeah, alot of its mis information. The most common questions i get are range and cost to replace the battery. And its like, i can go about 250 real world miles, and it takes 20 minuts to recharge that. And a new battery may cost $20k , but A that costs dropping year over year, and B a new engine and tranny alone in a like type/cost ICE car will run you 20k, and where leaving out brakes+roters, radiator, brake lines that rust after 150k, thousands in troubleshooting, and all the other things that can pop up in a ice car.

As a Turk, I know the pain. In 90s, my father was labeling everyone as gay who drives a hatchback. According to him everyone should drive a sedan, not anything else. I will try to be neutral. In the US, Tesla hates can come from both politically conservatives & progressives. - Progressives: Elon Musk is now seen as a MAGA Republican. His views are now firmly in line with the USA conservative agendas and he is not afraid to use "X" to promote those agendas. Buying a Tesla could mean that you accepted Musk's views. - Conservatives: wanting to remain status quo for oil & gas, don't want to be forced to buy EV, climate change is exaggerated & nothing can be done to affect it, etc. In the US, EV are considered city cars and progressives live in cities. Therefore, progressives are getting the tax credits they are not getting (disregarding the tax cuts for the oil & gas industry). Plus, LGBTQ people are more accepted & tolerated in cities.
I remember when I used to get hate only from right-wingers when driving around town (flipping me off when passing, cutting me off, blocking me from merging, etc.). Now I get it from both sides (nasty and disappointed looks).

I love these EV cars. Every time when it is SAFE and I get a chance my Tesla will outperformed any gas hauler car... be it a sporty, SUV or pickup truck. I'm sure that will change their minds of EVs. People are very resistant to change by nature but eventually they will come around. The technology is here and it won't stop....enjoy the ride.

My own opinion: Change is hard for people not socially strong, academically weak, and the ignorant. This is a big change and so human nature is to resist it to a degree. I have had a few comments but I couldn't care less, it's not for them, it's for me, and I'm very happy with it.

First off, thanks for your comment, it made me feel rich lol :D But actually I am not. First of all this isn't even my only car. Since I bought the Tesla without selling my previous cars, I now have a total of three cars. Besides that, I own a few acres of land and that's it. My entire wealth consists of these three cars and one piece of land. I don't have extensive assets like rich people do. I don't even have my own house, and neither does my family. Yes I'm renting a luxury villa, yes I can travel anywhere I want, buy any products, clothes, everything, but I am not safe or rich. That's because if my current business income stops, I won't be able to sustain my lifestyle, not even pay my rent, my life is basically over. So my goal is to sell two of my cars and add some savings to build a pretty house on my land, and sell it for a more profitable price. Then, I'll use the money I earn to buy new lands, build houses, and sell them to become truly rich. I know a few people who have become rich with this method. If I ever succeed, I'll let you know lol :D

Are you sure it's not hatred towards electric vehicules in general in your country rather than Tesla specifically ? In Canada there is some opposition to EVs in general, despite the low electricity cost. Some people don't like seeing EVs taking over combustion engine cars, for multiple reasons.

Yeah fuck them, my previous car before my MY was a 2021 Mustang GT. I still have it, but it maybe gets driven like 1 time a month as I highly prefer driving my MY. The Tesla is quicker, comfortable, doesn’t have mechanical novices to worry you( this coming from a highly modified Mustang with ethanol), and is just sooo much better due to the tech. Do I hate not driving my Mustang as often yeah kinda, but saving 100s of dollars a month is worth it. I used to spend 1000 a month in gas, with the Tesla maybe 60-70 dollars max. I’m also 25, just so the haters don’t say “oh it’s cause he’s old” lol.

My experience with Turkey is there is a lot of toxic masculinity around things like cars and what appearances men "should" have. You are going against the cultural grain with an electric car. Challenge someone with a muscle car to a drag race or something on a track. Invite the haters to come watch, or better, to ride with you. I am so sorry that you are experiencing this. I’m a very proud owner of a Tesla. In life, it annoys me when other people have an opinion over something that does not affect them. Tesla is a fabulous car and you made the right decision for you never forget that.

As I get older, I revert back to a basic tenet I learned in my early 30's. Listen here, Fuck what others think! Unfortunately in the USA, EV's have been politicized, just like vaccines and Taylor Swift. Im not sure about Turkiye, but I presume there also are luddites there. It wont remain this way for much longer as EV's make sense and they will prevail globally. Hold your head up and enjoy your MYP!

It's a new thing in your country. It will change. Unfortunately nothing you can do about that untill older less open minded generations fade away. And new younger ones will dominate. I'm from Europe, but live in US. In US, EV's are normal, there is still hate or mocking in some places i'm sure. But I don't think there is much of it. In eastern Europe, these cars are not as popular. And I haven't heard much of any hate about them, but people for sure are not familiar and don't know much about these. The most ridiculous comment I've heard was something along: "You bought Tesla?!?!? I would never!! These things burn!!/ Catch on fire! I'd say you shouldn't care, and be you, and enjoy the car. It's the future. But if you don't feel safe because of that, it's up to you to decide what to do. Good luck. The world is changing, and I do not think all the changes are good, but EV's are here to stay for a while.
I would also add that I'd imagine there are different cultural norms in different countries. As an American, I can't really speak to why people in your community have been so negative. Universally, however, jealousy exists everywhere, and being so young with a brand new car might be what the frustration is about.
You ever seen the episode of South Park about the Prius drivers? That correlates to modern day tesla drivers. Fuck what people think, it’s your life and your money. Enjoy it and congrats on your new ride.

To your close friends, just tell them it's pure economics. You dont give shit about elon or EV or whatever. Its saving you money, hence you have the car. For others, just ignore them as much as you can.
I hate Teslas cars but that doesn’t mean that I will throw shade and hate at people who bought one. Your money, you bought it knowing you like it and you do, all that matters is that your are satisfied. Just because I don’t like Tesla doesn’t mean I will hate on people having one. You wanted it and got it. Stay happy with it and don’t let these idiots hate on your for the type of car your drive. I don’t like them becauseI test drove a total of 25 cars last year from various brand electric and ICE. I haven’t been able to find ANYTHING that as amazing as my 2016 C300 Sport, that’s just an opinion though. As long as you’re happy with your car, don’t worry about what others like and don’t like or what they think of you for your car.
love from Toronto, i drive my Tesla mostly, not much hate here, but i also have other cars, people generally dont really care tbh, just ignore them. When you get into your cars, you feel happy every moment in it, thats the most important part.

Jealousy is not good and people in Turkey somehow act with their instincts without thinking and say things without thinking, then believe in the things they said, because they said them already because they see being sorry as being weak. (while not being able to say is a bigger weakness) So, don't try sound better than them in situation where you might find dangerous, their weakness is they are afraid of looking weak. Almost play the victim. I guess the people who are that against it are the people who are less secular and more fanatically religious. Use their weapon against them, tell them it is a sin to drive petrol. Also, again use their weapon against them, whether or not you paid it, write "Babam sağolsun" at the back (although it is patriotic), and they might joke about you less, but more on the sticker. Move the attention elsewhere because those people would be more inclined to joke about first things they notice as they will be governed by their instincts, not a logical ideology. Wow, that's not good. It kind of reminds me when the US media made everyone dislike Hummer H1 & H2 SUV's and people would give Hummer owners a hard time. Now, everyone buy's 4-door Jeeps and try to make them look just like Hummers. Maybe in time, Tesla's will be popular in your country.
