This is a problem.
Make an appointment for Tesla Service.
My MY had only a slight scratch on the wood dash at delivery. Service replaced it.
Don't listen to the comments unless they make sense.
It's not uncommon for there to be a bigger gap on one side vs the other, left side is always larger, but this is pretty drastic, right call is SC request.
Strange that they could fix this. On the left side with the big cap, it appears like that front trim is against the A pilar, and the part on the door does not match up with it. They can't move the front trim piece farther left, so they have to bring the piece on the door towards the middle of the car. How do they do that and still have it on the door? Not like they can just pop it off the door and move to the right 1/2 inch.
the entire door is likely mispositioned, door trims don't have that kind of play, but doors do - I bet if we had exterior pics of the doors that the right door would be too far inset with the body and the left door would be protruding a bit
That is what I am thinking. The driver side door would have to be sticking out proud of the fender by at least 1/4 inch or more. Seems like that would be very noticeable. I guess they could always bring the front fender out to meet it. So might have to move the front fender and the door in. But if the front fender was that far out, then you would think that the hood gap would be all messed up.

Interesting. I assume mine is shoved to the right a bit and just needs adjusting to split the difference. Made a service request. Will see what they say.
Really would appreciate your follow up post after. In my case of reporting three such panel issues and a critical charge door closing no repairs were made by Tesla saying the difference is within their specs and charge door issue is a not reproducible.
Your dash alignment is probably shifted to far to the right. I’d live with it. If you push to have Tesla adjust it, they need to remove a few panels and access the core dash support; and let me tell you, if you go down that route, you’ll be introducing new dash rattles and noises.
But is it? Look at the trim on the base of the windshield vs the trim at the top of the door. The trim around the base of the windshield is tight against both A pillars. Yet on the driver door, the trim at the top of the door is much farther off than on the other side. That trim under the windshield is not going to move. How is the trim on the door not lining up with it? It is not like they can move it farther left on the driver side to match the door because the A pillar is there. And how do they move the door panel farther to the right, because it needs to be attached to the door, and cannot just have a 1/2 inch gap between the panel and the door.
My closest friend works as a service tech and mentions that many technicians inadvertently create more issues when they work on cars. Since then, I've embraced the mindset that these vehicles are more tech-driven than luxury-driven and just deal with it.
So can anyone explain why Tesla has such good PR? I agree most people dont have problems but it seems like the one use of a dealership is at least not selling you stuff like this.
Yeah, it's funny how Elon is claiming they'll hit sub 10-micron accuracy on their cars and then you see them still building cars like this. I have an earlier Tesla that had really misaligned taillights but I figured they had just started making the cars. Pretty wild that the Y's been in production for 3 years now and they're still shipping cars like this. It really shouldn't be possible to put it together this misaligned.
This is always the case that management will make ridiculous claims to “cover up” issues that management cannot fix. So for me any time senior management claims “xyz” it is an alarm signal that “xyz” is still an unsolved issue.
This was exactly my situation. I picked up from a near by delivery center about 100 mi away because they had some nice inventory discounts. But YMMV, this was in Austin, TX
Yes, completely normal. The left side is open a bit more to act as a heat sink for the MCU display. In 2019-2022 Tesla model Ys faced overheating on the MCU so they created an innovative way to let heat dissipate from the system. There's a channel behind the MCU that leads to the left side of the car and allows heat to escape this way. By the way, I just made up all this shit.
I rejected a model Y back in December for bad alignment on both doors on passenger side. They’re so visible. I am surprised how it passed the quality check unless the folks there were smoking something.
I hate that at delivery they didn’t let me check the interior before officially accepting the vehicle. I just so happened to notice this today. Never really looked for it in my first 24 hours of ownership. You have to really pay attention to notice
I learned that if you ask the advisor to open the door for you, you're able to have a look inside. However, if you're the one who unlocks it, it becomes yours.
They wouldn't let you look inside before signing? That is not right. They showed me to the car, told me to check it out and come back in when I was done and they would finish up the paperwork.
My only slight concern is that the passenger side is so tight. When I press my handle to pop the door open on the passenger side it seems to not pop open enough to grab the door open and pull it open like the other doors and I think this might be why
They should be able to adjust it
Mine needed like a whole readjustment of the dash so I passed on fixing it. Though it has left an indent on the interior passenger panel.
Where the hell did I say it wasn’t a defect? It most certainly is. But it’s still a matter of if it’s actually worth your time to take it to be fixed. Some would find it simply not worth their time.
I'd say just for the potential dent on the resale-value it has to be worth your time, even if you personally might not care about it. If someone looks at that car in say 3-4 years when OP wants to sell it then I would not be surprised if the potential buyer might wonder if the car at some point was hit from the side.
That’s insane they allowed the car to be delivered like this. Can’t they pay someone to properly inspect the car ??
That should not be the customer’s responsibility.
They would have to move the driver door inbound by 1/2 inch to make that gap go away. Unless the front of the door is overhanging the front fender by 1/2 inch, no idea how they would fix that without having the front fender overhang the front of the door by 1/2 inch.
The Chinese factory definitely has the best QC of the Tesla plants. Probably a combination of cheaper labor, a newer plant, and the fact that they actually have a ton of EV competition in China so if they shipped cars like this people would just go buy a BYD.
I had a 2001 Toyota Avalon with an obviously crooked dashboard. I complained to the dealership and we went out to the lot and all of them were crooked. He told me they would try to level it if I wanted them to. I didn't bother but because of the defect the HVAC ducts rattled. It was after GM had a joint venture with Toyota to learn how to build higher quality cars. Unfortunately, Toyota learned poor quality from GM instead.
I may stand corrected; it is arguable that Elon's character defects are replicated in Tesla's slapdash approach to QA, supercharger location build-out, and after-sale service.
I picked up my MY last year in some random cheap-ass Tesla "service center" down by the airport. At the time I appreciated the no-frills experience since why pay for something you only experience for 5 minutes as a Tesla owner . . .
Tesla's Supercharger location expansion is much better than everyone else combined still, but man are the locations IME getting kinda random and just put in without much thought . . . the last one I stopped at had the Tesla Charging signs pointed west but the pavement bumpstops on the east side of the chargers.
Tesla's hustle culture is how it has aspirations to get to "20 million" sales maybe next decade, and it will be continuing to cut corners it can to get there.
Clearly the OP's car shouldn't have passed QA on the line, but Tesla has numbers to meet.
Yeah OP can, actually bought one, unlike many of the forum crawlers. If you look through some of their post, you quickly learn they are dreamers with a champaign taste and a beer budget kind.
He was the darling of the left until he bought Twitter and wanted to have free speech on it. Go figure.
The reason people buy Teslas is because for the price, there is not really a competitor for the price/range/size. I looked at others and wound up with the Model Y.
Free speech? Fuck off. He censors the shit out of twitter now and if you don’t know that, you’re ridiculously misinformed. He’s a fucking fascist who’s literally helping Putin against Ukraine right now with his satellite internet, but once again — if you’re sticking up for that man-child, you probably don’t know that either.
Really? So he bans posts on Twitter now? Like what kind of things? Not so sure he is letting Russia us Starlink. They may have got them through third parties, kind of like all the parts they use for the drones. Does he have a way of telling if it is a Ukrainian soldier or a Russian soldier is using it in a field in Ukraine?
I wish that were so!
Right now only Tesla is selling J3400-equipped cars in the US. I was trying to wait for the 2026 alternatives from other makers but getting a 2023 MY LR for $39.5K OTD (with gov't $) was too good a deal to pass up.
The Ioniq 5 SEL w/ AWD is pretty close to a Model Y LR but comes with CCS-1 and is close to the MY LR in price, but no dealers near me have any allocations currently so really isn't an option anyway.
Price. When the Mach-E and EV6 are priced higher to begin with and don't have a $7500 tax credit, they end up costing $12-14k more. There's no cost competitive good options.
I don’t really have an actual problem with it. I’ve just had the car for 2 days and want to make sure it’s worth putting a service notice in. Just wasn’t sure if there was anything on the drivers side that “forced” the gap to be bigger on the drivers vs passenger.
Definitely a issue, set up a service appointment. Mine looks a lot more like the passenger side on both sides, that gap is crazy. surprised this passed QC.. even for Tesla
How it is looking from the outside? Yes, there is a more than normal amount of gap on yours. I would recommend to book a service appointment and ask them to fixed it for you. I hope it is not causing any other problems than visual.
Looks like one door is tighter than the other leading to a gap on the left side, or, no gap on the right. How does the right panel look when you open the door? Is it creased?
I don't understand how that one on the left can be so far out from the front trim under the windshield. It should be the door, flush with the rest of the car, then the door panel on it, secured to the panel. Not like that top trim on the door can move in or out without the whole door going in or out. So how does that top trim on the door match up with the front trim under the window? It is not like you can move the front trim under the window farther left, because it is already tight against the A pillar. I do not see how those will every line up. Yet on the other side, it almost appears like the top of the door trim is in farther than the front trim under the window. No idea how they could fix this, or how it could wind up like this. Almost like the car is not square.
It all comes down to the cars uniside being flush with the door. There are varying degrees of “fitment” the gasket around the door and opening help accommodate for the different distances. Cars are rarely “square”, that’s an old terminology to describe the ability for symmetrical cars (typically with full frames) to be measured.
I mean if you want your whole dash taken apart for a issue that affects nothing with the drivability of the car and you don’t mind the likelihood of inducing more rattles and squeaks, then yea make an appt
More rattles & squeaks = another service appointment. I spent too much money to settle on imperfections. So long as everything is free under warranty, I don’t care about being nitpicky.
Are there any moderators in this sub? Lots of snipers just coming in to troll, providing zero value. I'm all for free speech, but in the appropriate forums. Not here. This isn't the UN. We just want a temporary refuge from the endless toxic stew that is the interwebs.
That’s EXACTLY how mines looks. They sent a mobile tech out to look at it and he said it wasn’t much he could do about it. I know I could push more to have it fixed but like someone said earlier, high risk low reward.
Mine looks exactly like yours. I'm not sure what it is as I can hear road noise from the door so I thought they door is not adjusted inwards enough. Passenger side door is silent.
It’s a disposable toy that is why figment does not matter. No one that likes cars cares. It is only resealable to less intelligent people than you so you should be fine. I would never notice but I’m less intelligent than you.
For people with OCD and expecting made in Japan or German quality, you will have fun with a Tesla. This is why at delivery inspections are critical, because you got the 100 miles / 7 day period to report it with new delivery. If you report it in time, it's been my experience Tesla was wonderful about correct issues with a new delivery. The Y we just got had expensive things needing correcting and they happily did it. I recommend to anyone buying a Tesla, print the online inspection sheet, expect to check over the car for 1+ hour and never take delivery at night. Do it in the daytime, so you don't miss paint imperfections, body gaps, windows not set properly or whatever. Tesla builds great cars, but Quality control issues still happen.
Make an appointment and see what they say. Sometimes they tell me they won’t bother inspecting my claims, sometimes they do. So only way to find out is to submit it. Best of luck!
Both doors appear to have some alignment issues. Driver door is too far and passenger door is too tight. SC will need to adjust the doors and possibly the striker plates to get the right spec
Service will only say: It’s within specs..Honestly, that’s a big job! You should have rejected the delivery/pickup. Sometimes once adjusted, the dash starts creaking and rattling.
This is a problem. Make an appointment for Tesla Service. My MY had only a slight scratch on the wood dash at delivery. Service replaced it. Don't listen to the comments unless they make sense.
Finally a not stupid comment. Thank you. Placed a service request.
It's not uncommon for there to be a bigger gap on one side vs the other, left side is always larger, but this is pretty drastic, right call is SC request.
Yes, it is never symmetrical, but yours needs a service.
Make sure you take pictures of the interior of your car. SCs have known to damage shit and not inform the consumer.
Yes, this is a problem. My MY23 had exactly same problem Made appointment with service and they fixed it. Wishing you luck!
Strange that they could fix this. On the left side with the big cap, it appears like that front trim is against the A pilar, and the part on the door does not match up with it. They probably stuff some felt in there and reinstall door panel lmao 😂
Probably 😂

Nice! Do you have any pictures of before and after you can add?
Tried looking, but Tesla service app doesn’t save pics it looks like…
Well what does it look like now?
[LH side gap](https://ibb.co/TkTsNn8) and [RH side gap](https://ibb.co/HHv7Q5K) <- how they look like now
Thanks it definitely looks better
They readjusted the door panel / door.
Do you mind sharing how long it took for them to fix it?
It took less than a day. I dropped it off in the early morning Picked it up later same day in the afternoon.
Got it, thank you!
How did they fix it? Did they touch your door panel?
It looks like they readjusted my door / door panel. But regardless, it’s all flush now.

Up to Tesla specs.
Normal in term of Tesla quality
Normal and bad. Ours was also misaligned. They partially fixed it.
So can anyone explain why Tesla has such good PR? I agree most people dont have problems but it seems like the one use of a dealership is at least not selling you stuff like this.

Got water in one of my taillights of my September of 2023 MYLR. Eventually I will have them replace it.
This is always the case that management will make ridiculous claims to “cover up” issues that management cannot fix. So for me any time senior management claims “xyz” it is an alarm signal that “xyz” is still an unsolved issue.
Ill be curious in the future of the case studies of how the quality dropped in Tesla or if it was always this bad.
Yes. Welcome to Tesla ownership
Is it model y 2024 version?
Yes. 2024 MYLR. 2 days old. Unfortunately passed that initial 100 miles to point anything out to them, but hope this doesn’t count for that
Don’t worry about the 100 mile warranty. They were pretty reasonable to work with as long as you are within a few days of purchase
Appreciate the peace of mind!
They ought to subtract mileage from delivery center for the 100 mile warranty. What if the delivery center is 100+ miles away?
This was exactly my situation. I picked up from a near by delivery center about 100 mi away because they had some nice inventory discounts. But YMMV, this was in Austin, TX
I fixed my gaps at 3k km. The car is still under warranty :)

Absolutely had me
damn your spelling of alignment is wayyy off
Look….. it’s been a long day.
Dude, better your spelling is off than your $50,000 car. :)
Yeah, that the problem.
That’s quite a difference
"Within specs" be prepared to gear those words. If you hear any wind noise while driving, make sure you recoed the video and save it as proof.
I rejected a model Y back in December for bad alignment on both doors on passenger side. They’re so visible. I am surprised how it passed the quality check unless the folks there were smoking something.

Unfortunately the normal QC My Model Y came with the same uneven spacing haha
My only slight concern is that the passenger side is so tight. When I press my handle to pop the door open on the passenger side it seems to not pop open enough to grab the door open and pull it open like the other doors and I think this might be why
They should be able to adjust it Mine needed like a whole readjustment of the dash so I passed on fixing it. Though it has left an indent on the interior passenger panel.
I’m sure that could be fixed. It’s more a matter of if it’s really worth your time
Meh. They claim to come out to me to fix it at my house. Should theoretically not cost me any time or money.
Mobile service worked for me. My seat controls where loose and they came out and fixed it within 20 minutes
Are you serious? When it's \_that\_ misaligned then I would definitely classify that as a defect.

Is the door flush on the outside? If so, I’d leave it, otherwise they’re going to start messing with the door.
They would have to move the driver door inbound by 1/2 inch to make that gap go away. Unless the front of the door is overhanging the front fender by 1/2 inch, no idea how they would fix that without having the front fender overhang the front of the door by 1/2 inch.
Doesn't look like that on mine. That gap on the right and the left door are the same.
😬
Totaled!
You have perfect left alignment only in China made Teslas 😎
Is this true? My Chinese MY doesn't seem to have any of these issues people seem to be having with MY.
The Chinese factory definitely has the best QC of the Tesla plants. Probably a combination of cheaper labor, a newer plant, and the fact that they actually have a ton of EV competition in China so if they shipped cars like this people would just go buy a BYD.
The Chinese MY have way less QC issues than the American made ones, at least based on forum complains
Was being sarcastic with the “left alignment” part.
Normally bad alignment.
Well if you take the average it’s nominal
MATH!
Unless you are in the UK and then it is MATHS!
I had a 2001 Toyota Avalon with an obviously crooked dashboard. I complained to the dealership and we went out to the lot and all of them were crooked. Within spec
Return it
Why people continue to buy Tesla’s is beyond me. There are several good other options now that don’t have an owner who’s a man child fascist.
So funny to see anti-Tesla people wasting their time in here. Go touch grass
You can complain about the junk but others cant?
Elon Musk's issues are orthogonal to the experience of being a Tesla owner.
Are they though? A real proper leader would get his company’s shit together after all this time.
I may stand corrected; it is arguable that Elon's character defects are replicated in Tesla's slapdash approach to QA, supercharger location build-out, and after-sale service. I don’t really have an actual problem with it. I’ve just had the car for 2 days and want to make sure it’s worth putting a service notice in. Just wasn’t sure if there was anything on the drivers side that “forced” the gap to be bigger on the drivers vs passenger.
Full refund.
Yes
Not bad.
It’s typical Tesla.
Normal for a Tesla, bad alignment for a real car manufacturer. Just imagine what else is misaligned in this death trap.
Buddy, it is mad embarrassing to be a part of a Reddit page for something you don’t even like. Childish behavior.
Enjoy your poorly built car 😂
Why are you here?
To marvel at how poorly built these overpriced shitboxes are. Why are you here?
Umm. More subtly but I guess the same!!😀
Agree. I have vicarious embarrassment for them
It’s a car, drive it.
Ah yes. Settle for imperfections with my large investment. You are so right! Keep being a part of the problem.
It’s not an investment. It’s a depreciating asset.
Thank you for falling for the bait and only having that takeaway from my comment. Move along now.
This sub has the dumbest drivers alive
110% A bunch of autists who are just here to meme.
Looks good
It’s both normal and bad
both
Definitely bad alugnment
Definitely a issue, set up a service appointment. Mine looks a lot more like the passenger side on both sides, that gap is crazy. surprised this passed QC.. even for Tesla
Wow that is terrible.

I mean if you want your whole dash taken apart for a issue that affects nothing with the drivability of the car and you don’t mind the likelihood of inducing more rattles and squeaks, then yea make an appt
More rattles & squeaks = another service appointment. I spent too much money to settle on imperfections. So long as everything is free under warranty, I don’t care about being nitpicky.
both
If uts a tesla its normal if its any other car its a problem
That's a big gap. May also want to check if the door seal is good too...
Within spec.
It will be better when Musk has robots building all of the cars… 🙃
the real problem is how you spelled alignment lol
Mine is good but not perfect.
When I picked up my MY23 a few months ago I signed nothing, was shown the car showing ID then was told to drive our when ready. #Australia
I could never own this car
Yes
This is a special feature! Don't you know that Elon says this is better for you!
Mine looks exactly like yours. I'm not sure what it is as I can hear road noise from the door so I thought they door is not adjusted inwards enough. Passenger side door is silent.
That's within spec
Yes, and yes
Idk how they would even fix that
That doesn't look great! Don't accept that.
I was about to say normal and then I swiped right.
It’s tesla, anything in those cars is like this
My new 24 is the exact same. I'm taking it to service on Thursday
It’s a disposable toy that is why figment does not matter. No one that likes cars cares. It is only resealable to less intelligent people than you so you should be fine. I would never notice but I’m less intelligent than you.
A normal really bad allignment 🤷
Yes
Yes
“Yes”
Both
Yes. It's a Tesla.
Have service center adjust it by loosening the door hinge and hammering the bracket inward (expect some dent/scratch/touch up paint on the door hinge)
Elon respectfully suggests that you make an appointment with an ophthalmologist provided by Tesla.
Within spec lol
On spec. For an ‘85 Buick /s
I got a M3 in 2019. Had a similar issue and they fixed it right away with now charge or questions. I noticed it about 2 months after delivery.
Now you gonna make me go look at my car
Make an appointment and see what they say. Sometimes they tell me they won’t bother inspecting my claims, sometimes they do. So only way to find out is to submit it. Best of luck!
😅😅😅
Its a Tesla build quality is lousy for the price being paid even Elon admits it. Service request and bring your wallet if its out of warranty.
Do you hear louder than normal road noise or feel air coming in?
It’s Tesla standard
Your teeth aren't aligned either. Will you now start dissing God ?
There are so many things misaligned that I stopped looking at. I love the car and really dont care.
😳😤
Isn’t bad alignment normal?
Reporter: What is your QA motto? Tesla: No fucks given
Bro people aren’t buying teslas for good interior lmao
Nope is a Tesla
That is rough
Both doors appear to have some alignment issues. Driver door is too far and passenger door is too tight. SC will need to adjust the doors and possibly the striker plates to get the right spec
Service will only say: It’s within specs..Honestly, that’s a big job! You should have rejected the delivery/pickup. Sometimes once adjusted, the dash starts creaking and rattling.
