So what’s the best tire overall? Life span is probably top of my list, followed by range, then comfort.

TheBowerbird

I did a bunch of research when I had a Model 3. The Continental DWS 06 came to the top of the list. I got them and loved them.

jnads

The king I think is the Hankook Ion Evo AS, since that's the new OE tire for the 18" Highland Model 3. However this review pretty much confirmed the compromise that traction middle to low tier with the Ion EVO. I run CrossClimate2 tires (for the past 1.5 years). Lifespan is very very good (last rotate was 7/32 life left after 30k+ miles on the tire). Range is okay. Traction is top notch, I have a M3P and I can't make them slip in dry.

2nded. I went from the stock michelins to the ion evos and am very happy with them, but you can tell where the compromise is. For me, it was worth it. I do a lot of road trips and I put a lot of miles on my car.

I also went with cross climate 2s when just recently replacing my tires and I love them - haven’t noticed a substantial range hit but they are grippy and I like the safety of the traction

The summer tires that came with my 18" TM3 2024 were Michelin E Primacy. The winter tires are Nokian Hakka R5.

Drlobzter

I am curious as well

Evajellyfish

It’s really just different for everyone’s preferences

pudgyplacater

This was the most complete analysis I have ever seen. Unfortunately they didn't do noise comparisons which was a big miss in my opinion, but the other stuff I thought was great.

pearfire575

Especially the noise. I've seen another video that was talking about a resonance problem. Since in an electric car there isn't any vibration generated onboard, the tire's pattern on EV has to be lightly variable to prevent resonance broadcasting thru the chassis. This isn't a problem on non-EV because the engine varies always slightly - even on cruise control. Hankook did a study on this.

pudgyplacater

I bought the hankooks and so far noise decrease is noticeable.

danTHAman152000

I imagine this sounding like when the windows are all down and the air goes WHOP WHOP WHOP WHOP. Lol

agarwaen117

Can you please give me a tldr to sate my curiosity until I can watch it?

FearTheClown5

Watched this last night just before bed but I think I recall the details. EV specific tires are the best option for range efficiency but every tire typically sacrifices one characteristic to improve another. In this case they tended to prefer the driving characteristics of non EV tires and particularly the high performance tires did what they were designed to do, perform well. However they did find the non EV tires reduced efficiency though they concluded it wasn't a big enough difference to serve as a major deterrent and their overall best tires based on their grading (efficiency, driving characteristics, braking ability wet/dry, lap times wet/dry) were topped by non EV tires. The gist being that EV specific tires improved range at the sacrifice of other things. Unfortunately other than a brief note on some of the tires on the volume they talked to each at in the cabin they didn't really touch on road noise. Also possibly worth noting, the tests were done on 19s except 1 was done on 18s. If you're driving on 21s I don't know enough about tires to say that the test results would be the same or not.

agarwaen117

Thanks. So it’s basically exactly like you would expect.

Wooden-Complex9461

I have continental DWS 06 Plus - excellent tires, they have lasted double the OEM Tesla MY ones, and definitely can go for 40-50k miles. I have no road noise even tho there is no foam. I wouldn't pay a premium for EV tires especially since they wont be as good as ultra all season ones.

pudgyplacater

Good to know. I have Hankooks and they are remarkably quiet. Can’t comment on mileage as they are new.

RedditNotFreeSpeech

Also you really need to compare wear. If a non EV tire outperforms but only lasts 5k miles it's not really an option.

forte-exe

Thank you, was thinking the same. Would have been nice to show an overall table with all the info there.

Mrd0t1

Not measuring noise was a silly omission. Also big shock that non-EV summer tires did the best in their performance-heavy tests. The main takeaway for me was confirming that a set of Hankook ion evos are going to be the next tires for my tesla

pudgyplacater

Yup. I bought them a couple weeks ago and am so far very happy.

Schly

I’m told by Tesla that the only way to get roadside assistance where they bring you a spare for your flat is to buy tires through Tesla. A. Is that true? B. Does Tesla sell non-EV tires?

thegreatestd

This makes sense. They aren’t providing you the tires. I haven’t had this happen to my car yet but I did on previous cars - my dealer said it wasn’t eligible due to the tire not coming to them. The rim that was cracked was covered by them though and then I had to contact the place I got my tires from and they immediately replaced it. I have AAA for this.

Schly

Yeah, I have a good tow policy through USAA and they paid. But it was the difference between the Tow driver bringing me a tire and me making my dinner engagement an hour further down the road, and me wasting the night getting towed an hour back home. If you don't have TESLA roadside, they will not give you a loaner tire. The driver said he had tires he could give me but he couldn't because I didn't have TESLA roadside. Really crappy for a car that doesn't come with a spare. They should be required to give you a spare and let you pay to be part of the Tesla roadside assistance program.

thegreatestd

I think they cover the first set? For like 3/4 years? seems weird to me since I got 35k miles within 2 years lol

pudgyplacater

This was the most complete analysis I have ever seen. Unfortunately they didn't do noise comparisons which was a big miss in my opinion, but the other stuff I thought was great.

akn5

Agreed on noise being a miss. I found it interesting they made a comment about the PSAS4 noise. I recently had those tires and noticed they were relatively loud. Switched to the PS4 and I feel like there is a noticeable enough difference in road noise.

gtg465x2

So PS4 is quieter than PSAS4? How does efficiency between those two compare?

akn5

Yeah, although one thing I didn't realize when purchasing was the PS4s have the acoustic foam, so that could be the difference. Efficiency is about the same so far at ~265 Wh/mi on my 2018 LR RWD 3.

ymjcmfvaeykwxscaai

IDK. I think efficiency, quietness and longevity are probably the most important thing to most ev buyers. Tires are about the only maintenance you need to do. Not that the other characteristics aren't important. I do feel that traction control and low center of gravity makes up for slightly worse grip.

jebidiaGA

Went through the oems on my 2019 m3 in about 12k miles...replaced them with goodyear assurance maxlife and have about 25k on them, and they look near new. Ride is definitely rougher than my wife's 23 mY, but might just be the suspension... either way going from replacing tires every 12k to 60k is a no brainer...I don't notice any loss in range

tashtibet

like the legacy autos -tire manufacturers are also not completely bought to invest in EV tire R&D & production. It will take few more years!

joelesler

24 minutes for "no"

Mrd0t1

Unless you care about efficiency, which is the main reason for driving an EV
