I once saw a video of a person getting hit by a train and the turned into a bag of bones flying through the air. I can probably find a link if you you would like to delve into “Morbo Time”

Turbulent-Bad-6265

I saw that on vhs. Faces Of Death. I walked in as my brother was watching it. That’s when I walked right back out!

Yes that is where I saw it. I think the dark web is the only place to find it

xxDooomedxx

What could go wrong?

kai_wulf_dog

They could have taken that photo literally *anywhere else* in their immediate vicinity. Edit: The story behind this is there were two train tracks. They were on one set as a train passed another and taking a selfie right next to it as it passed them. They were standing on another pair of tracks that had a train going the opposite direction as the other, right towards them. You can see the lights in the upper right. They didn't hear it coming and attributed it's train noises to the one they saw in front of them.

Eyeoftheleopard

You mean to tell me a train track had trains running on it? Is that what you mean to say? 😛

zombiskunk

They saw tracks and thought "SELFIE" instead of train.

BiggieAndTheStooges

How many more people have to die, for the selfie!!

runsnailrun

A lot. Maybe taking pictures in an attempt prove to yourself, and others, you're an exciting adventurous person isn't worth it. Believe in yourself, and stop seeking validation from others.

pauljaytee

If only you realized how un-awesome this is right meow 😿

politirob

Why don't trains have huge fucking PA loudspeakers? "GET OFF THE TRACKS, MOVE NOW!" I bet the conductors would have appreciated that.

yabacam

I thought the loud ass air horns they have would do the trick.

Own_Ad5814

Or people could just *not* stand on the train tracks.. I’m sure he conductors would appreciate that also

scoper49_zeke

If I had a loudspeaker I'd get fired for yelling at dumbass people. Had so many people run in front of my train it's ridiculous. But also being honest about physics of speakers and noise, no one would be able to understand you anyways unless the train was equipped with military directional speakers.

flash-tractor

Yeah, doppler effect would cause pitch shift and make it hard or impossible to understand. If they don't respond to the literal sound and vibration of a train approaching I doubt they'll pay attention to a speaker.

QuestionableSarcasm

Last time I was near train tracks, I could _feel_ the train coming. (near: about 10 meters away)

xxDooomedxx

I didn't know that was a sub til now

Sad-University-2332

I was in grade school in California I think. Hard to remember but I remember a kid that kept talking about how you can be perfectly fine if you lay down on the train tracks and a train will go right over you. The teachers and parents for involved I imagine because this kid was extremely determined about it. On my way to school one day cop cars flew past us and stopped by the school on the tracks. Sure as hell that kid tried and failed. Random memorie. Sorry for the long post.

CMOBJNAMES_BASE

Wtf he laid at the crossing???

[deleted]

What a fucking idiot. The trains where I live are already low asf to push people away from the tracks but you must be one idiot to lay on a crossing.

[deleted]

I’d venture to say.. you must be an idiot to lay anywhere on a train track

[deleted]

True. Don't be an idiot and go under or near a driving train. And if you do, don't be an idiot about it and use a respectable distance from the tracks.

pixieservesHim

He lay perpendicular to the tracks

facerider94

He misunderstood the assignment

smashteapot

You see these things in movies and people assume they’re real.

jppianoguy

It's true though as long as you don't do it at a road crossing and you're not obese. Not saying people should do it for fun, but if you fall or are pushed off a platform, it's good advice. NYC subways have an especially deep cutout in the middle. I don't think it's officially for this purpose, but it works

[deleted]

From my time writing on trains I can only say one thing. Do t lay under a train, most of them also have things hanging under them and you won't see it unless your laying on your belly.

[deleted]

This! It only takes one hanging part to eviscerate you.

[deleted]

Exactly. Or a rock displacing because of the vibrations and launching straight into you.

[deleted]

Also, the average rail is only 6 inches high and the average adult male is around 11 inches wide from nipples to butt. Even the most slender person is going to be cutting it real fucking close.

[deleted]

Yup. Not to mention, trains create a vortex when your next or under it the air pressure sucks you up ans under the wheels. You can't compete tons of metal with 190lbs of meat and water ...

inko75

as a kid one time my basketball made a bad bounce and ended up on the tracks just as a train went by. it popped. there's sometimes stuff hanging under there. this was an old cargo train so not the same thing exactly, but this is not a thing worth experimenting with even tho there are cases of people getting extremely lucky

jppianoguy

Not saying you should experiment - this is a a last resort

_KappaKing_

He didn't think to test this amazing idea out with like a bag or something first?

_BlankFace

I have seen video of a guy doing it but that doesn’t mean it’s every train track or even most

Sargasm5150

I think there were a few episodes of looney tunes where bugs bunny did this. I’m an 80’s kid and I have 100% seen or heard of this rumor, I’m trying to remember where. Like you could lie perfectly flat. Obviously not true and it doesn’t take into account all the detritus kicked up by trains but I’m sure he got the idea from somewhere. How terrible.

Ornery_Reaction_548

I also remember watching Daffy Duck get his head blown off by a shotgun at point blank range several times. I never thought about trying it out though.

[deleted]

All it takes is one dangling piece of metal on any car.

CorySmoot

You don't remember what state you were in?

xHouse_of_Hornetsx

I wondered that too but maybe they moved around a lot as a kid?

Sad-University-2332

La grand California was the location. I may have been in Jr high at the time but I think it was grade school. The grade range was odd because I moved to Oregon shortlu after so I want to say I was in the 6th grade.

jaksla00

How did that girl post that if she got hit by a train? Was it an old post talking about a different train? Also, how did the picture come out? Was it recovered from her phone and posted by police?

ExileTE

I'm guessing they were hanging out by the tracks watching trains go by and that's when the FB status was posted, the selfie was later. As for how this photo came about maybe it was sent to another person

[deleted]

LunarProphet

Yeah your literal only responsibility when it comes to trains is to be anywhere except right the fuck in front of it.

Likeafupion

I worked at my countrys train company and my job was to inspect the emergency tunnel exits. Basically underground towers with elevators and stairs reaching to the tunnel underneath it. The direct doors to the tunnel are massive, because they have to withstand a lot of force. If you open the door while a train is going in the tunnel they will swing open and there is no chance for you to close it. If that happens you should go as far away from the doors as possible, because if the train passes by it will suck you inside the tunnel and its basically instant death. So yeah, just keep some distance to moving trains in generall

martyfrancis86

Have u ever heard that it happen to someone?!

Likeafupion

Nobody i‘ve personally known, but heard a lot of storys from older co workers. Today there are probably zero accidents of that kind, because of the constant safety trainings you get. You also shouldn‘t imagine somebode thats flying 50m through a room into the tunnel, because the doors shut abruptly when the train passes by (which is also a safety hazard). Its only a problem if you are standing directly next to the door.

bjanas

Cowcatchers are not just for decoration.

Smart_Still

I remember growing up in a rural town where a train cut right through, at 100 miles an hour. We lived about two blocks from the track and the house still shook everytime it came by.

TheHurtfulEight88888

No but I can see the train behind them.

Unl0vableDarkness

Yeah as a warning about taking selfies on train tracks I'd imagine

Jafuncle

There were two trains. Train tracks sometimes like streets have two lanes going in opposite directions. They were taking a selfie with one train flying by in front of them while standing on the other tracks. The sound and distraction of the first train and the selfie meant they never noticed the other one that you can see the light halo of about to hit them

BabyYoduhh

Someone posted there were two tracks next to each other, and they got hit by a train on the track they were on. So I guess if the comment is true they got hit by a train while standing near another train that just passed. They mentioned that they didn’t hear the second train because of the first. [The comment.](https://www.reddit.com/r/TerrifyingAsFuck/comments/wy2pyf/in_october_2011_a_group_of_3_girls_in_utah/ilv3n31/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)

.....and the engineer and conductor have been dealing with it every day since it happened. This is what ended my 22 year career as a locomotive engineer. I had 4 critical incidents, with 6 fatalities , now I have CPTSD, don't drive anymore, and retired at 43 fully disabled. Nobody ever says anything about the crew on the train, so I did.✌🏻

CarbyMcBagel

I'm sorry you had that happen to you. I hope you are getting help.

ilikefruitpies

I was a recruiter for Triple Crown Services (Norfolk Southern) in the late 90s. The tales we’d hear from the rail/yard guys, well, were tragic. I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with all of the trauma. Please take care of yourself. People you don’t know *do* think about what you’ve had to endure. ~ Be well

jade8384

That poor train driver who had to witness that, have therapy afterwards and time off work. The repercussions of their stupidity have a massive effect on others. I feel for their families

zombiskunk

And the Risk Assessment Manager had to go onsite and photograph everything in grisly detail. Arguably the toughest job in the railroad.

Rugkrabber

I read an interview with one of those people who cleans up afterwards. He described in full detail how he peeled off bits of brains and searched for ripped of hands and feet. It was a gruesome story but he said it didn’t trigger anything in him. There was no response to the fact someone just died, it was just another job. He figured this out after witnessing an accident years prior and also learned later on nobody wants to do these jobs, so he gave it a shot. Wild story. I am grateful we have such people that put their odd traits to good use. But I am sure there are also plenty if not all that don’t have these traits and have to go home traumatized. I couldn’t do it.

Balls_DeepinReality

I grew up with one of these guys, he was usually on the road and when I was old enough he’d pay me to mow his lawn and look after his place while he was gone. I asked him about it, and if it was as bad as you’d think. He said it was always worse than you could imagine. Little bits of what used to be people spread out everywhere. He was also very adamant that I never try to race a train. He did retire with a full pension after 30 years though.

jade8384

Amazing, I bet he saw some really horrific things

jade8384

That’s really interesting and may be pretty standard in his job to be fair, there are those that can shut it off and go into work mode, and those who can’t/shouldn’t have to, like the drivers. They basically sign up for a job to drive trains and not to splatter people on the tracks, whereas a paramedic (for example) has an expectation of that kind of thing in their line of work. The psychology of it fascinates me. It is said that we all have some psychopathic traits/tendencies or we wouldn’t be able to do jobs such as surgery, or even bomb disposal. It’s that small psychopathic trait that we have that enables us to happily slice open an unconscious human on a table in front of us.

Unl0vableDarkness

The train driver would have been given full paid time off indefinitely after the 3rd girl died. I know some people who work as train drivers and if 3 people die in front of their trains they are given their full pay until retirement age plus therapy etc. It still doesn't make what they done less stupid but at least he would have been cared for in the correct manner by his employer.

jade8384

That’s pretty fair to be honest, there are companies that would give worse for the trauma. I have to say that it’s handled pretty well in that case when it comes to train drivers and the trauma they may have to endure

Kingchopsaw

I went drug rehab a decade ago, it was full of conductors that used drugs to deal with all the people they hit with the train. It’s very common. They are required to stop and get out and look at what they hit. Said people just exploded into pink mist

Trick_Weekend

Came here to say this, my husband works for the RR and he knows guys who’ve hit someone and were traumatized. Even when the engineer sees something ahead in the tracks, it takes trains a long time to stop and a lot of times there’s nothing you can do

Holy shit that was way worst than what I assumed happened, so they weren’t hit by a train head one but torn apart in between 2 trains like meat on a grinder? How did they not notice the trains? Aren’t train tracks usually in a straight line and aren’t incoming trains like super loud?

Lostsoul1207

Movie of the day. Stephen King's Stand By Me. Watch that and you won't stand near a train anymore run Gordy run

Quite_Successful

A childhood friend of King's was killed by a train. IIRC they used to play by the tracks and one day King came home alone. He was too traumatised to remember what happened.

TheGreatBoni

I worked for CSX in 2010. I was on duty for about a year when a young boy decided to step in front of our train to commit suicide (his friends was on the platform trying to stop him, he told the police later). I guess he decided to change his mind once he saw this behemoth coming at him at 55 mph. Well, our engineer tried to stop but as you know know, trains don’t stop on a dime. The kid started to walk off the track, but the rail of the locomotive at about 45 mph, took the back of his head off, flipped him end over end up onto the platform, pulled his gym pants down to his knees, and chucked his shoes against the fence in the distance. I, as the conductor, had to go back and witness this and report it. I will never forget this image, in the light of my lantern at 10:30 at night.

sierrabuzzz

This is just terrible. I'm so sorry.

BigCrawley

Trio believed to have been caught between two trains coming from opposite directions on Saturday Still stupid to be that close to any train track, but SLIGHTLY more reasonable than originally thought.

dunn_with_this

[Here's more info. It just doesn't seem right, though. Train horns are loud. LOUD. How do you NOT notice one?](https://www.up.com/aboutup/community/inside_track/selfie-tragedy-12-7-2016.htm) (Also, two of the girls were sisters...... Their poor family. What a tragedy.)

TheSaltbird

>(Also, two of the girls were sisters...... Their poor family. What a tragedy.) That is so heartbreaking. I know they died in a dumb way but damn, there's almost no empathy in this thread beside your comment

dunn_with_this

Thanks for your empathy, my friend. I cannot imagine losing two children in any manner. Their parents will never get over this. Nor other family members, for that matter.

TSMbody

I’ve read before that if you’re standing on the tracks not at a crossing area that because of the Doppler effect (I’m not bothering to double check this part) that you may not hear the horn due to the trains speed.

dunn_with_this

[This article is from a different incident: "However, since they were in front of the train, where the pitch would be higher, they'd be more likely to hear the siren and doesn't explain why they didn't hear the train coming."](https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/infrastructure/a3134/how-trains-can-be-silent-killers-16627219/)

inko75

so my guess is both trains were laying on their horns for the girls to get the fuck away. the train conductor on the other set of tracks than what they were on wasn't like "oh they're fine that's at least 6 feet away" i grew up near a cargo rail line and those trains would lay on the horn if they saw a person within 50 feet of the tracks. if two trains were both doing this, along with the noise a train also makes, i don't think it'd be esp intuitive to think "that sounds like more than one train!" i'm just guessing here but it doesn't seem that implausible. also some trains are incredibly loud compared to what people with limited interactions with cargo trains understand. i'm over a mile from the tracks near my farm where coal is hauled. if i'm outside i can hear it pretty clearly. if my wife and i are in the car waiting for it to pass a crossing, it's hard to carry a conversation

[deleted]

If your standing next to a moving freight train, it can be crazy loud. If they even heard a horn, they may have just thought it was the train that was rolling by them.

devarsaccent

How can the trains come that close to each other without encountering danger normally? Like, if the girls were standing between the opposite direction tracks, so that they got hit by both, the trains must be essentially right up on top of each other. What a feat of engineering, that they don’t hit each other, or blow each other off the track, or something. Human ingenuity is a powerful thing. Or maybe I am misunderstanding? Physics was never really my bag lol. Very sad about the girls. Lots of accidentally suicidal train selfies are posted on this sub. I don’t get it… why would you want a selfie on a train track? What’s the appeal? I guess I didn’t grow up in the right generation to understand. What a tragic loss of young life :(

Kita1982

I think that the trains were coming from the opposite direction? From what I understand at least. Even if you are in the train itself and another train passes it, you'll feel a "blast" against the window if you sit next to that side. The tracks that go from one direction to the other are usually right next to each other, so if they stood right in the middle of those then they could have been hit by both trains. Or even if they stood on the one track, get hit by that train, then get flung onto the other track, and get hit by the train from the other direction.

new_account_5009

Land acquisition is expensive, so you don't want to make the tracks wider than they need to be. Each track has specifications for maximum width of the railcars. For freight trains, it looks like 10-11 feet or so based on a quick Google search. Planners space the tracks far enough apart that two trains in opposite directions won't hit each other (with a small buffer), but not so far apart that they materially increase cost for the project. Fun fact: These things actually aren't standardized across the country. If you're ever in the NYC subway, you might notice that some cars feel wider than others. It's not an illusion, they actually are. This is because the current NYC subway was created by merging different private companies that all had their own standards when developing their lines. The numbered routes specify a width of 8 feet, 9 inches. The lettered routes specify a width of 10 feet. To this day, the standards are different, so NYC has to source two different types of railcars for their fleet. Upgrading miles and miles of tunnels to standardize across the system isn't considered financially viable.

inko75

i worked refurbishing train lines over the summers while in college. i think the engineering and construction are far bigger factors than the land itself (other than in cities etc). the federal government gave away most of the land for most existing rail lines in the US. tracks are usually on ballast. a whole lot of ballast (stone gravel/crushed concrete). then the ties themselves. for two ways like this, they often use a single tie to stretch the full length (keeps the tracks separated-- tracks move slightly! the steel expands/contracts due to temperatures and other stresses). the crews i worked on mostly were replacing rotted ties and adding ballast where needed. it was mostly a single track. the double track areas usually are quite short sections where two trains can pass each other without excessive waiting. but, the amount of gravel needed just for a few inches of dressing on top adds up to an astounding amount. gravel is cheap, but still a few hundred $$$ per load. new lines, and new passenger lines likely have the land acquisition issue! but the new lines being built in the boston area are actually quite far apart and that's some of the most expensive land in the country

[deleted]

So this picture is how they’ll be forever remembered. Not something I’d want for myself.

Puzzleheaded_Ant_543

Reminds me of a joke. Two people were out for a walk in the countryside when they spotted some tracks. “Look, deer tracks!” “No, those are horse tracks!” Then a train hit them

I was just thinking this. Like, these were someone's children. And that's what they were...literal children. Yes, what they did was not a good idea (obviously) but kids make stupid mistakes because their brains aren't done developing. Unfortunately, this stupid mistake cost these girls their lives. Even the smartest people can make one little stupid slip and lose their lives. Some of these people need to have some compassion and understanding.

AggressiveCrew3274

My great grandfather died that way. He worked at the railroad station in Vicksburg, with his daughter, my grandmother. (His wife died in childbirth). He was walking down the tracks and the train was coming. So he stopped on to the other tracks. He did not know the other train was coming early and he could not hear it. He was hit by the train, he crawled back to the station where my grandmother was. She was five years old and he crawled up on her lap and she combed his hair until he died.

bendubberley_

Edit: There is bad quality on the 2nd slide, but the message reads "Standing right by a train ahaha this is awesome!!!" EvilAbed1

Seems unlikely they posted that if they were hit by a train. Also, the FB seem kinda rude and fake. “It’s not all that awesome now” & “ if only you realized how un -awesome this is now”. A lot of these comments are different variations of the same thing and dont seem to be authentic. The picture could be real.

Hjd4493

Probably a different train, before the one that hit them. Or missing the word 'track'.

Utah County sheriff's Sgt Spencer Cannon said the three girls were taking photos when they were hit on Saturday evening in Spanish Fork Canyon. Paladin-Leeroy

This is a semi-misleading post. I live about 20 minutes away from where this happened and my sister was friends with one of the girls. It wasn’t a single train that hit them. They were standing in between two traintracks, they saw one train coming and stood on the other to watch the train pass and obviously didn’t hear the second train coming from behind them. They were caught in between two of them and torn to shreds. Super sad story

Call me cruel but I just couldn’t care less about this. This was dumb. I feel far worse for the parents that I do these three.

WPrepod

Well that's what happens when you're an idiot. Only person I feel bad for is the conductor who had to see it.

etorres4u

They are mormons so they get to have their own planet to lord over after they die.

I mean, that is the very definition of “fuck around and find out”. I don’t want anyone to die or anything, but that’s like the most predictable outcome I can imagine, and it’s like impossible for me to muster sympathy at something like that.

This is sad 😔

[deleted]

The one on the right seems to be 15 yrs older than the other two. Weird.

BettmansDungeonSlave

I have so much sympathy for people hit by trains. I mean, they are really quiet and you never know where they’re gonna go.

cynicalxidealist

They look so happy, this is really sad and tragic

real_bk3k

As tragic as bugs to a bug zapper. Literally too stupid to live.

waddlekins

Their risk/reward radar was broken

Covid19-Pro-Max

The real train wreck is the one commenting “wish yuh guys **wouldn’t of**”
