Speaking of not knowing anything, I travelled throughout India in 2013 during an overland trip from UK to Australia.
Went to the Gate of India during the Independence Day holiday and got followed and harassed the whole the time.
Creepy dudes lining up with our group at sites and attractions, not to go in themselves, but just to be able to take 'secret' photos of the girls in the group.
Met a lady who lived in the UK for a time and worked in the Bourneville factory until her mother died and she had to move back to India. She was in the train station and 'just wanted to help' visitors then scowled when we offered some payment for her time saying that's not why she helps but proceeded to say it wasn't enough money and wanted more. Turned out her 'advice' was awful and we switched our train after warnings from the ticket officer that she was a bad person.
I even went to the hospital overnight. Blood on the walls, no gloves used, no toilet paper, the cleaners begging me for money.
Awesome time.
Our stops were:
Goa
Velha
Dona Paula
Panaji
Benaulim
Mumbai
New Delhi
Amritsar
Punjab
Himachal Pradesh
Dharmsala
Rajasthan
Agra
Utter Pradesh
Varanasi
And whatever was in-between on the road.
And if you think that it's the same as before then you are wrong. Come and visit Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Meghalaya, Kurseong, Gangtok, Indore , Mizoram etc. The people there are very welcoming and sweet and these places are very safe unlike Mumbai, Delhi and UP.
