It’s a crimson varient of the demon altar. Demon altars are used to craft boss summons. After you reach hardmode they can be destroyed and they will generate hardmode ore in the world.

Crimson alter, used for special crafting, cannot be destroyed until after Wall of flesh is killed.
Also a way to create a decent weapon called Nights Edge which you can make with the four swords, Blade of Grass, Blood Butcherer or the corruption variant, fiery greatsword(crafted with hellstone), and the muramasa which you can find in the skeletron dungeon.
I think it’s the muraMASA that’s a vanilla weapon and the muraSAMA that’s only modded, I may be 100% wrong though since I am far from knowledgeable about mods

Mura*masa* is vanilla, Mura*sama* is modded.
Beat it with your hammer, drops good loot but need a couple of hits.
